Gen David Ejoor even met Ironsi drinking Tea with Biscuits while the whole country was looking for PM Balewa Ok so Ironsi was drinking tea and biscuits rather than engaging a dry fast till Balewa is released. Has the story changed to drinking tea and eating biscuits instead of discussing with Ifeajuna shortly after Balewa was kidnapped? 🤷 |

T9ksy: Yeah, even though Ironsi had no concrete evidence like the likes of Ademoyega's, ifejuanna's et al but you had no qualms listing banjo as a Jan. 15th coup plotter.
If you don't know whose side Banjo fought for during the civil war, I guess you need to go and do some more research on the civil war. Anyway, what has that got to do with the fact that, even in the absence of irrefutable evidence, you were very quick to list Banjo, as a Jan. 15th coupist. Why was Banjo arrested?🤷 Whose side was he on during the civil war? 🤷 Perhaps he was wrongly imprisoned by his fellow officers? |

How is it an “Igbo” coup if the Igbos were almost 66% of the middle ranked officers in the army prior to the 1966 coup?
By default, most of the coup plotters would be of Igbo origin 🤷
Also, there were a lot of Northern officers who willingly followed Kaduna Nzeogwu’s lead in the Northern coup.
The “Igbo” coup myth can only be dispelled by the naked truth. |

Brenbentondiaz: And for not heeding your so called "intelligence" reports, only military and civil leaders of other regions needed to be sacrificed, while all Igbo civil and military leaders were allowed to "escape", right? Imagine if that coup had been carried out by Yoruba soldiers and 2 Igbo leaders and 10 Hausa leaders were killed, you guys would still say it was targeted at the Igbo leaders (by you guys' nature of victim complex). Not to talk of what happened in 1966. Is Unegbe no longer Igbo? 🤷 The Eastern Premier - Michael Okpara was placed under house arrest during the 1966 coup. The officer in charge of the coup for that region - Lt. Oguchi happened to lean on the moderate side of imprisoning corrupt officials, rather than killing them. Unlike the extremists in the West and North region. That being said, all the top politicians were well informed of the coup plot and had ample time to escape. Guess the ones who acted on the intelligence report and escaped? 🤷 By all accounts,Nzeogwu was the only one who had genuine intentions to kill all politicians irrespective of their ethnic origin. I can’t say same for the other coupists. Nzeogwu was regarded in high regard even by non-Igbo military leaders and officers. Even after he was killed during the civil war, he was given a befitting burial with full honours by Gowon and the Nigerian government. This was at the early stage of the civil war. |

Of course you will run away rather than do it Let’s cut the chase and go straight to the point. Unegbe was the only casualty of Igbo origin in the coup. The coup was successful in the North primarily due to Nzeogwu - an upright and influential soldier. The coup down south was a flop. Especially in the south east. Nzeogwu was furious, he planned to march down south to finish the job until Ironsi intervened, negiotiated and eventually arrested him. You might want to read up on Nzeogwu, he wasn’t a tribalist unlike the drunkards that messed up in Lagos. |

https://femifanikayode.org/1966-coup-was-igbo-coup/ Was Femi Fani Kayode part of the coup plotters? 🤷 So Femi Fani Kayode who was 6 years old or so when the coup happened has a more accurate position than Major Ademoyega who was involved in the January 1966 coup? Nice logic there. By the way, do a little bit of research and tell us which ethnic group had the most middle ranked officers as at the time of January 1966 coup. I’m eagerly waiting. |

T9ksy: Yeah, i know he was imprisoned by Ironsi but there was no hard irrefutable evidence, that he was among the Jan. 15th coup plotters. None of the known coup plotters fingered him as one of them nor did he participated in the coup, itself. So, why then did Ironsi jailed in the east with rest? Not sure to be honest. Unless he was acting on an intelligence report or someone who snitched on Banjo. That being said, no cold hard concrete evidence I know of identifying Banjo as a January 1966 coup plotter. |

Ademoyega was one of the coup plotters. In his book “Why we struck”, did he mention anywhere that the January 1966 coup is an Igbo coup? Between Ademoyega (a coupist) and Ejoor (an outsider and potential victim of the coup plot), whose accounts is more accurate? 🤷 |

christistruth01: Gen Ironsi was involved in the Coup Where did the intelligence report identify Ironsi as a coup plotter? That is the cold hard evidence I’m looking for. Also look out for the words “PERHAPS BECAUSE” - that already makes it speculative and the personal opinion of the author. This is basic English. See what the author wrote here: “These soundings were most likely the source of intelligence reports that are said to have reached the ministry of defence late in November 1965. They were passed on to the Prime Minister who was not inclined to take them seriously, PERHAPS BECAUSE (speculative opinion of the author), Ironsi played down on their importance. |

If you were Ahmed Kurfi what would you have done in such a Treacherous situation?
https://dailytrust.com/alhaji-ahmadu-kurfi-89-grateful-for-long-life/ At the bolded, I just read the article. Where did Ahmed Kurfi say that? See Kurfi’s narrative of the events below: Kurfi was also the deputy permanent secretary at the Ministry of Defence during the 1966 coup and recounted how he narrowly escaped death.
“My minister and permanent secretary then went overseas, I was in charge when the coup occurred. That night, the acting inspector general of police, Mr Kamsalem, late Hamman Maiduguri was the commissioner of police in Lagos. They came to my house about 2-3 am, woke me up, and told me that they heard that the Prime Minister had been kidnapped, Minister of Defence is not here, since they said it was soldiers that did it, you are the only some that can do something about it,” he said.
“So I really do know it was strange then to see soldiers behaving that way, so I told them I have school mates who are in the army. There was one then who was in charge of the southern brigade, the country has two brigade then, the first in Kaduna and the second in Lagos, it was Maimalari , he was one year ahead of me, there was Kuru Mohammed, Yakubu Pam, some of them were in Ikoyi, I said okay , let us go see what is happening,
“We took off in separate cars, because it dawned on us that there is danger, we went to Maimalari’s house, the day before the coup, there was a party he gave over his new bride. By the time we got there, there was no light, in the front of the house there was no sentry, which was unlike in the military setting, no guards, I noticed something like a dead body in the house, and it completely dawned on me that there is something wrong.
“After seeing this in those days, I should have gone into hiding but I didn’t, so we moved Yakubu Pam, a Berom from Plateau, from same class with Gen Hassan Usman, they are one year behind us. It was quite also, as I was leaving his wife spotted me and called me back weeping telling me some soldiers that normally come weekends for pepper soup have come and taken away my husband. I stayed a while consoling her she told me that when the soldiers came she telephoned Ironsi, who when he got this information, ran away too.
“I could remember Abogo Largema, a classmate also, was in charge of a battalion in Ibadan, he also was there at the party, they thought all of us will be at the party so that they can come and kill all of us, including myself. I knew he was at Ikoyi Hotel, so I went there. At the reception, by that time I had called, it Col. Samson Siasia who said if I wanted Abogo I should go to the police. I sensed trouble there also, as I was driving away there was a classmate of mine, not a soldier, he was staying upstairs in Ikoyi, he called me back, asking me what is happening saying some soldiers came, killed that man Abogo and put his body in a truck, and drove away. I missed this by five minutes. If I had not stopped at Yakubu Pam’s house, they would have finished me because they were looking for me also for my suggestion that there should be quota system in recruitment.” |

Deadlytruth: When he set out to "foil" the coup, did he order any change of formation in the military? When he ordered troops to go fight Isaac Adaka Boro and arrest him, did he first change any formation in the military across the country? Change of military formation is a preventive measure to foil a coup. Commanding the troops (a reactive measure) to crush a mutiny does not require changes in military formation. For the umpteenth time, can you show us any intelligence report identifying Ironsi as a coup plotter? I want cold hard evidence, not your sentiments. |

Deadlytruth: Are you suggesting that a Grand Commander of a country's military institution who got intelligence report about a mutiny in the offing by his subordinates shouldn't have immediately taken decisive action to preempt the mutiny but wait till the mutiny actually happened before taking action? What then is the essence of an intelligence report? So the intelligence report did not identify Ironsi as a coup plotter? |
Politics › Re: Who Foiled The January 15, 1966 Coup? by OkCornel(op): 3:44pm On Jan 25, 2025 |
Deadlytruth: What mattered most was that any military officer regardless of rank knows that a coup plot is always meant to topple the government and distabilize the country and possibly come with bloodshed of innocent people. So Ironsi didn't need to know the names of the coup plotters from his intelligence report before deploying troops to the residences of those at the top power echelons for protection. So the troubling question remains: what exactly stopped Ironsi from beefing up security around the prime minister, the Senate president, the president and the four regional premiers immediately he received that intelligence report despite knowing fully well that those occupying those offices must be the prime targets of any attempt by anyone or group, be they civilians or soldiers, to topple the government of the day? Why warn the civilian prime minister and civilian regional premiers about a coup about to happen? What exactly was he expecting them to do about it better than he himself the overall GOC of the very coupists (whether he knew them or not) would have done to protect the civilians in power? Think about this with an open mind and you will realize that Ironsi wasn't very clean as far as the whole coup thing was concerned. At the bolded, do you have any intelligence report indicting Ironsi as a coup plotter? Or is this just your opinion? I need evidence, not sentiments and personal opinions. |
