FamilyVP Osinbajo Visit To Oyo Creates Excitement In Ibadan, Ogbomoso by okefranci(op): 4:33pm On Jan 24, 2022
The late Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, was a man that loved his people, demonstrated genuine commitment to the progress of society and lived an accomplished life, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Sunday during a condolence visit to the Palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan, where he was received by the palace chiefs and wife of the late monarch, Olori Rashidat Adetunji, among other members of the royal family.

Before he arrived Ibadan yesterday, the VP had been to Ogbomoso where he also visited with the families of the late Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi, Ajagungbade III, and former Oyo State Go

Before he arrived Ibadan yesterday, the VP had been to Ogbomoso where he also visited with the families of the late Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi, Ajagungbade III, and former Oyo State Governor, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala.

At both Ibadan and Ogbomoso, the Vice President was met on the streets and at all his stops by enthusiastic Nigerians who trooped out to welcome and interact with him, at times with singing and drumming, always with excitement.

The Vice President, who was received on arrival at the Oyo State Government House Arcade, Ibadan, by the State Deputy Governor, Rauf Olaniyan, extended the condolences of President Muhammadu Buhari to the late monarch’s family and people of the State.

Describing the late Olubadan as a caring and honest leader, the Vice President, who spoke in Yoruba said “it is very necessary for me to come here because our father who departed was someone who was deeply kind; he loved people and everyone.

“All through his lifetime, when we visited, even when we spoke with him during phone calls, he always showed his love and kept praying for us.”
Testifying to the late paramount ruler’s forthrightness, Prof. Osinbajo said “it was President Buhari who mentioned it first that when we were campaigning, Olubadan was someone who would speak his true mind with you on what he had decided to do, he wasn’t a betrayer, who would tell you one thing and do the other.”

He observed that “there are different types of people; but for Olubadan, he was a straightforward leader.”

Speaking about the late Oba’s virtues and legacy, the VP noted that “all through his lifetime, he fulfilled all his set goals, beginning from when he was a tailor, to starting a record label and the rest of his plans.”

“Even his ambition to become the Olubadan became successful; just as we know that it is God who crowns a king. For anyone to be crowned a king, it is only by God’s will, and we thank God; it aligned with His will for our father to be crowned a king.

“God willed it, and he made him a king. Besides this, our father also left an inheritance for his children, which, in this sense, are not the money, houses and cars, because all these will still perish; but the heritage I’m talking about is the good name and legacy he left behind, which all of us will continue to speak about and stay with.

“We thank God for the good name he left behind as a mark of honour and goodwill for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and all of us will benefit from it,” he added.

He assured the royal family and guests present during the visit that the legacy and efforts of the late monarch for a progressive Nigeria shall be fulfilled.

“I wish to thank you all here gathered, everything our father did for Ibadan, and even, our nation, Nigeria, we know all. And we will continue to speak about them. We can’t tell it all about someone who was that outstanding in his lifetime.

Giving assurance about the future of the country, the VP said “I assure you that our country, Nigeria, will be better than this. It will be a very comfortable place for all of us to live in, and we shall all be alive to eat the good of this land. We shall all see how good it will be, and it is very soon.

“It may look as if there are challenges now, but God will solve them all.”

The Vice President’s visit to Oyo State on Sunday generated enthusiasm and excitement among Nigerians from diverse backgrounds who thronged major streets in Ogbomoso and Ibadan to acknowledge the VP’s presence as his motorcade drove through their neighbourhood. In some instances, the VP’s convoy had to stop as he acknowledged the crowds who had massed on the road.

Right from his arrival at the Ogbomoso Grammar School, where his chopper landed, to the premises of the First Baptist Church, Okelerin, where the funeral service for the late Soun of Ogbomoso was held, the Vice President received a rousing welcome from a mammoth crowd who cheered and danced, with many carrying banners of different shades.

In Ogbomoso, residents trooped out and lined the major roads in the town, displaying placards with various pro-Osinbajo inscriptions. Matters got to a head at the residence of the late former Oyo Governor, Alao-Akala, where crowds of excited residents of the ancient town had gathered ahead of the VP’s arrival with singing and drumming, and the VP acknowledging the cheering.

In the same vein, Vice President Osinbajo on arrival in Ibadan received a rousing reception as his admirers gathered around the Government House Arcade, drumming and dancing to welcoming songs. Just like in Ogbomoso, residents trooped out at points on the road peaking at the entrance of the Olubadan’s palace.

At some points, including at the palace of the Olubadan, the VP had to stop to acknowledge greetings from many excited residents in the city.

In both Ogbomoso and Ibadan the Vice President was accompanied by dignitaries and State Government officials. While the Governor was with the VP in Ogbomoso, his deputy received him in Ibadan. There were also members of the National Assembly, as well as Prince Afolabi Ghandi Olaoye, with the VP.

PoliticsSoun’s Death Has Created Vacuum Among Nigerian Monarchs – Osinbajo by okefranci(op): 10:55am On Jan 24, 2022
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Sunday, said the death of the late Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi, has created a big vacuum among the league of traditional rulers in Nigeria.
The Vice President maintained that this was because the late Oba was not just there on the throne he made remarkable contributions to Ogbomosho and to Nigeria.

” Without a doubt, the Oba’s passing has created a big vacuum among the league of traditional rulers in Nigeria. And this is not just because of his age and almost half a century on the throne. It is because he was not just there, he made remarkable contributions to Ogbomosho and to Nigeria, for which the Nation honoured him twice, first as Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and then as Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR),” he said.

Prof Osinbajo added, “His time certainly brought commendable development to this great and ancient town of Yorubaland, so we can say confidently that the Scriptures are fulfilled today – ‘Didun ni iranti olododo’.

“The late Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, had an exceptionally long, peaceful, and progressive reign, for which we must just continue to give thanks to God Almighty. Having ascended the throne on the 24th of October, 1973, he has delivered four decades and eight years of exceptional and transformational leadership, leaving behind the indelible marks of peace and prosperity.”

There is no doubt about it that the best candidate among those who are aspiring to become Nigerian president is Prof Yemi Osinbajo though he hasn't declared yet but masses are praying vehemently that he will be our president
Politics2023: Challenges Before Osinbajo by okefranci(op): 6:36am On Jan 24, 2022
No doubt, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is one of the forces to reckon with in the politics of 2023 general elections as the race to pick the sole presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) gathers momentum.

Though Osinbajo, a lawyer, politician and pastor, is yet to declare his intention to run for the office of president in 2023, many support groups and individuals have sprung up rooting for him.

His support groups have been consulting stakeholders across the country despite the declaration by the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for president in 2023.

Tinubu had nominated Osinbajo in 2015 as President Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate to douse the concern over the Muslim-Muslim ticket at the time.

The ambition of the 64-year-old Professor of Law who has been serving as Vice President since 2015, is said to be strongly backed by some Northern emirs and four governors from the North; two from the North West and two from the North Central because of what they see as his “uncommon loyalty” to the president.

Can Osinbajo enjoy a smooth sail into the presidential office? This is a poser that can be answered if he can address some challenges, which analysts have identified ahead of his reported ambition to succeed President Buhari.

Daily Trust in this piece highlights some of the challenges the politician who hails from Ogun State but lives in Lagos State must tackle to realise the ambition to occupy the number one seat in Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Tinubu factor
Pundits say the first major hurdle Osinbajo must cross is the presidential ambition of his benefactor, Tinubu, who seems to enjoy more popularity in the North and the South West having remained in the opposition before the APC defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 general elections, after 16 years’ grip on power at the centre.

They believe that Osinbajo, who served as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice under Tinubu, must strive to get the support of the former governor of Lagos State to brighten his chances at the coming presidential primary of the APC and 2023 general elections.

Another cogent reason why the vice president must get the backing of his benefactor is the fact that he seems to have full control of the party structure in Lagos State and enjoy the support of more incumbent and former governors in the ruling party who determine where the pendulum swings.

However, pundits say the possibility of a truce is being jeopardised by not only the campaigns of calumny being championed by the supporters of the two leading contenders for the APC presidential ticket but also the declaration of Tinubu that the desire to become president was a lifelong ambition when he spoke after a meeting with the president on January 10.

The Jagaban Borgu, while reacting to a question on the president’s response to his ambition, had said: “That’s our business. He is a democrat. He didn’t ask me to stop. He didn’t ask me not to attempt and pursue my ambition, is a lifelong ambition.

“So, why do I expect him to say more than that? You are running a democratic dispensation and you must adopt the principles and the values and the virtues of democracy. That’s it.”

Fear of marginalisation

One herculean task before the vice president’s reported dream is the fear of marginalisation from the Muslim community in Nigeria; because as a well-known pentecostal Pastor, he has never hidden his religious inclination, unlike typical Nigerian politicians.

Osinbajo is the pastor in charge of the Lagos Province 48 (Olive Tree provincial headquarters) of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, a factor that worked for him in 2015.

The APC settled for a popular pastor as the president’s running mate to assure the Christian community at a time the party had been projected as a “supporter of APC” and “Muslim political party” by the party in power.

Nigeria has continued to witness stiff competition between the two main religions: Islam and Christianity. This development has nurtured the ground for mutual suspicion among the adherents of the two religions as every action of government in power is always scrutinised, leading to popular terms such as “Islamisation” and “Christianisation” agenda.

In his South West zone, political analysts say he needs to assure the Muslims that the issue of Hijab wearing by female students among other controversial matters threatening peaceful co-existence in the region would be allowed in public schools without interference in matters seen as fundamental human rights enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

However, the attendance of Osinbajo at the 2019 Interfaith Religious Dialogue on “Promoting Religious Tolerance and Acceptance” organised by the embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Abuja; the General Assembly of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), and reception of a delegation from the Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) led by its Executive Chairman, Mr Disu Kamor, in 2021 were seen as subtle moves by the cleric-turned politician to assure the Muslim Community of his commitment to the promotion of peacebuilding and interfaith cohesion.

Secure PMB’s backing and Villa ‘cabal’

Pundits say the support of President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) and his close think-thank popularly call ‘Villa cabal’ will boost the chances of Osinbajo to secure the APC presidential ticket.

They say he needs to get the backing of the ‘cabal’ who is said to have been angered while acting as President. The situation is said to be responsible for the decision not to trust him with power again when the president is on medical leave of less than three weeks.

Before the present situation, he had taken serious decisions relating to governance in the past.

It was while the vice president was acting president that he transmitted a letter to the National Assembly seeking the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as substantive chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on July 14, 2016.

The Senate under the leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki, however, rejected Magu after many months of politicking.

It was also while Osinbajo was acting president in February 2017 that a letter seeking the confirmation of then acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Onnoghen, was transmitted to the Senate. Onnoghen was confirmed but sacked in a controversial manner before the 2019 general elections.

Similarly, while acting as president, Osinbajo in August 2018 sacked the Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS), Lawal Daura, one of the most powerful kitchen cabinet members of the administration following the invasion of the National Assembly by operatives of the service.

Sources at the villa claimed that the sacking of Daura angered the people around the president, hence the decision never to hand over to him again to serve as acting president.

Daily Trust reports that due to heightened suspicion, Professor Osinbajo had through a memo in September 2019 received a presidential directive asking him to seek presidential approvals before taking action in some agencies he was asked to superintend.

Before the memo, President Buhari had disbanded the Economic Management Team (EMT) headed by Osinbajo and replaced it with Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) chaired by the Chief Economic Adviser to the President.

Keen observers say Osinbajo must now find a way to assuage the feelings of the close aides of the president since those incidents happened during the period of the late Chief of Staff to the President, Malam Abba Kyari.

PoliticsOsinbajo, Tinubu Taking APC By Storm by okefranci(op): 2:46am On Jan 24, 2022
LAGOS – Since Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s declaration of his intention to run for the presidency in 2023, there have been subdued disquiet between the camps of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader and the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who many believe could end up as the anointed and preferred choice of President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Buhari was non-committal when asked if he had a ‘favourite’ candidate in his party to succeed him. The president said he would rather keep the matter close to his chest, knowing that if he revealed his favourite, he could be taken out.

Although Prof. Osinbajo is yet to declare his intention to take over from his boss, many observers believe that both the president and the supposed cabal are rooting for the vice president.

After Tinubu’s declaration, one of the groups supporting the calls for Osinbajo to contest the 2023 presidential election, said they remained unruffled by the decision of Tinubu to throw his hat in the ring for the 2023 presidency.

Looking Like Two-Horse Race

The chairman of the Public Opinion Leaders Group, a unit of The Progressive Project (TPP), one of the groups rooting for Osinbajo presidency in 2023, Shettima Umar Abba Gana said it is the beauty of democracy for many aspirants to show interest in a position. He, however, added that they won’t be shelving their calls for Osinbajo to succeed President Buhari in 2023 just because Tinubu has also declared his intention.

Speaking further, Gana disclosed that though Osinbajo had not commissioned them to campaign for him nor has he openly declared interest in the race, the Vice President is their choice to become the next leader of the country and every other person had the right to support his/her preferred candidate as well.

He said: “What is happening is democracy, he (Bola Tinubu) wants to run, we want our own man (Osinbajo) to run. That is the beauty of democracy; we want our man to come out because we believe he has some good qualities.
“In a democracy, everybody has his own opinion, his own wish and his own vote. Let them come out and let us go to the field. Ours is that this man is good, let him come out and we’ll support him. What we’re doing has nothing to do with Bola Tinubu coming out or not, let him come out and let everyone that wants come out. It’s a democracy that is not a problem.”

However, those who belong to Tinubu’s camp have been raising concerns and observations over what they term the high profile political movements for Vice President Osinbajo for the 2023 presidential race which they believe must have been sanctioned by President Buhari.

Sources in the Tinubu camp believe Osinbajo may be the secret weapon Buhari mentioned in his recent television interview.

The complaint by the Tinubu camp came against the background of high level endorsements and notable moves by canvassers of the Vice-President’s alleged 2023 presidential aspiration. The endorsements have been especially manifest in the North and recently the trend moved downwards to the South with Delta State as its launch pad.

The Tinubu camp, which has vowed not to raise the issue with the Presidency is, however, irked by the fact that Osinbajo’s name is being mentioned and projected everywhere for the 2023 presidential election with Buhari looking the other way.
A source within the Tinubu’s camp said, “You cannot tell me that the President does not know anything about this and that his deputy is being worked up to take his office and he is ignorant? No, no.

“How can your subordinate be moving about like that as if you have anointed him for your office? You send him here and there to expose him?
“If you have a wife and she is misbehaving, who am I to complain when you, the husband, are indifferent? So, we will keep on watching.”

Those Who Stand Against Tinubu

On Tuesday, Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, in a Facebook post which he titled, “Principled Political Choices are not Betrayal”, explained his decision not to support the presidential bid of Tinubu, saying his stance should not be interpreted as a betrayal.

After he released the lengthy statement on his Facebook wall, Ojudu came under serious attacks from Tinubu’s followers and loyalists who accused him (Ojudu) of betrayal and double standard.

Ojudu, who claimed to have been receiving threat messages for his stance not to support Tinubu’s aspiration, said although he and Tinubu had been long-time associates, supporting the former governor’s presidential bid does not agree with his conscience and ideals.

The presidential aide, who seems to have taken sides with Osinbajo whose presidential bid he is now energetically promoting, in his Tuesday statement, said he was being threatened while his family members were being embarrassed because of his political opposition to Tinubu.

According to the statement, “I have seen a statement made by me, many years ago, to celebrate the 60th birthday anniversary of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu making the rounds. Yes, I did make that statement. And more of such will come in my autobiography. We, together, have seen good days and bad days.

“I and Bola Tinubu have come a long way and we have been there for each other. So, let no one use my acknowledgment of his good deeds and my refusal not to support him in his bid for Nigeria presidency portray me as a betrayer.

“Tinubu remains my leader and I will forever cherish him and the contributions he made to my Organisation during our fight against the military.

“He, however, knows I don’t follow the herd. I make my choices based on very rigid parameters. He will tell you I am very Independent in my actions and ways.

“As a third year university student my dad chose to be in NPN. I never considered the fact that he fed me and paid my school fees to join him in a party I despised. I went to UPN and became a youth leader.

“Tinubu will tell you that whatever and whoever Ojudu is committed to is in for 100 percent commitment. Reasons I did rather faced torture and possible death in General Sani Abacha’s detention than reveal certain things they wanted me to reveal about him.

“The idea that everyone who has related with Tinubu and disagrees with him on this Presidential bid is a traitor and a betrayal is puerile. Many of us, his associates, were not made by him as you also want the world to believe.

“We were already made before meeting him and in the course of relating we gave one another a helping hand. As far back as 1992 when I came to know him, I was already one of the editors of a popular news magazine with a good standing too in the civil society. I walked out of my job when our billionaire publisher (Chief MKO Abiola) requested I and my colleagues apologize to General Ibrahim Babangida over a story critical of the regime. That was 1992.

“When I left that job, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, a man whom I was indebted to greatly (gave me a scholarship in my school days alongside King Sunny Ade) invested in my publishing platform (The News, publisher of PM news). The same one that was consequential in the battle to bring democracy back to Nigeria.

“At the conclusion of that struggle, Chief Fawehinmi insisted we sit out politics. Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu disagreed with this notion, and I did as well. Against an obvious choice to blind loyalty, I went along with Senator Tinubu, even serving severally in critical roles as he assumed the governorship position. My actions angered Chief Gani so much he asked that I repay his investments. Guess what? I gladly did.

“So, if my principled stance against NPN, against IBB, and against “siddon look” was not betrayal of my father, Chief MKO Abiola, and Chief Gani Fawehinmi respectively, why would my principled stance against our leader’s present ambition be?

“So, on this matter of 2023, I wish him well but I cannot in good conscience give him my support or cast my vote for him in the coming primary. It is my right. I am above 60 years of age for God sake. I almost died seeking this inalienable democratic right, held up in detention and severally tortured. Your god is not my god.

“Let no one think he can browbeat or blackmail me to do what does not go with my conscience or my ideals. Enough of your phone threats and embarrassment of my family members.

“I know Tinubu. I respect and adore him. Many of his latter day supporters do not even know him. If they do, they won’t resort to emotional and physical blackmail. When Tinubu decided to go against Afenifere and the Yoruba elders in 2003 by not supporting President Olusegun Obasanjo, he wasn’t betraying the Yoruba nation or a traitor to Afenifere. He made a choice and history has been his judge. Let history be my own judge too. When he supported Chief Olu Falae against Chief Bola Ige, our respected leader, who fought for him to emerge as the candidate of Alliance for Democracy in Lagos, no one shouted betrayal.

“For the irritants who have been sending threat messages to me and members of my family or calling to abuse me for not supporting Tinubu, do know that is not democracy. It is something else. I spent my youth years fighting autocracy and intolerance of the military and I am still willing and ready, even now, to stand up for what I believe , even if it will cost me my life. Enough said.”

Meanwhile, former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, on Tuesday, said the APC will give its presidential ticket for the 2023 general elections to Vice President Osinbajo.

Speaking at the ongoing 2022 annual lecture of the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation in Kano State, the former governor, while referring to the National Leader of the APC, said the party would only be interested in his (Tinubu) money.

According to Aliyu, any “riff-raff or moneybag” will not get to the highest office in the country, even if they bring out money.

“No matter how much money he has, let him bring the money and we will collect it. Mr. Vice President, wherever you go, we will follow,”

He described Osinbajo as the best candidate for the ruling party. “Mr. Vice President, do you know you are the best candidate in your party?”

He stressed that Osinbajo has the acceptance of most Nigerians regardless of tribe, religion, and political party.

On Saturday, January 15, thousands of Nigerians campaigning for Osinbajo’s presidential aspiration converged on Kano where they unveiled a new support group called ‘New Nigerian Tribe’.

TINUBU DID NOT MAKE THEM, HE EXPLOITED THEM

By Ayo Turton

What human capital has Tinubu developed gan an? I am sick and tired of hearing this argument.

Let's break this down. At best, Tinubu's relationship with these guys has been symbiotic in the best scenario for him.

Was it Tinubu that made Osinbajo the Professor he is, or Tinubu needed his brain to run his government?

When he got jammed up with Obasanjo, it was Osinbajo that came up with a legal solution for him and they won serially in courts.

For your information, Tinubu was against his becoming the VP. He reluctantly agreed when he had no choice.

Was it Tinubu that made Fashola Senior Advocate of Nigeria?

He only tapped into Fashola's brain to make his government look good. The benefit was mutual. The moment Fashola's profile started rising above his own as Governor, he tried to stop him from getting a second term. What they play now is a cat and mouse game. The relationship has never been the same.

Ambode was the Chief Accountant of Lagos State that came up with the plan to raise the State IGR that they are enjoying today. Now they are no longer friends. He threw him under the bus.

Fayemi was one of those eggheads that fought with NADECO during Abacha infamous days. Tinubu only occasionally supplied funding.

The moment the Northerners suggested his name as a running mate to whoever emerges as President from the North, at the early stage of forming APC, Tinubu went against him. The relationship has gone down south since then.

Mamora is a suave and an urbane gentleman and a Medical Doctor to boot. He was simply one of the best Senators of his time. The moment his profile started rising in Abuja, with the potential to overshadow the landlord of Lagos, the ticket was taken from him by Tinubu and given to his wife.

Aregbesola was the most loyal to Tinubu of all those followers; now, the relationship has gone south.

Therefore, he uses these people as tools rather than their destiny helper.

The moment their profiles started to rise, he would attempt to stop them. He thinks he is the one to determine how far destiny can carry them.

This is a guy who destroyed all the powers that made him from AD days.

I am sick and tired of the platitude.

Buhari that completely shut Tinubu out of his governance for 7 years is unlikely to hand over to him.

What about supporting a younger Osinbajo or Fashola for the position if he is altruistic in growing talents?

Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, was in the storm’s eye earlier this week. Perhaps some disclosure is expedient here before we proceed. Ojudu is someone with whom I am acquainted. He was, in fact, the first editor I worked with in my career as a journalist. In other words, Ojudu is someone you can refer to as my former teacher and if you like, mentor. Having laid this to rest, I imagine that the events of the past few days may be nothing but a storm in a teacup for the accomplished journalist; nothing that could have ruffled his feathers and unworthy of the attention one is giving. But I think differently.

What is the issue in contention? Like Vice President Yemi Osibanjo and many other Nigerians from various walks of life, Ojudu has benefitted from Tinubu’s large-heartedness in the past.

With the lion of Bourdillion, as they call Tinubu, an act of benevolence could be anything from monetary gifts to facilitating appointments or aiding elections into offices. And as life is, one rare lift from a Tinubu or any other large-hearted person may become the pedestal for much more excellent opportunities to which the original benefactor may have no contributions. A friend’s appointment as minister was reportedly motivated by his previous performance as a commissioner in his state. He probably would never have come into the consciousness of the president, who appointed him minister, without the first appointment as commissioner. The man who gave him the first office knew nothing about the national assignment, so does this man owe the rest of his life to the person who made him commissioner? But I should not pre-empt myself.

Back to Ojudu: The senator has been an adviser to Osibanjo, a co-Tinubu loyalist and beneficiary, for the past six years. As expected, he has shown allegiance to the Vice President.

However, there are indications that his current principal is interested in the 2023 presidential race. It also happens that Tinubu, their mutual benefactor, aspires to leave his throne as a kingmaker to adorn the crown himself! Can either party be blamed for aspiring? I think not.

However, the situation presents a dilemma for every honest member of the Tinubu political family, but more for people like Ojudu, who now works for the VP, and may genuinely see Osinbajo as a better candidate. Unlike many of his colleagues, who may act duplicitous, Ojudu has publicly declared to stand with Osibanjo and has, as a result, incurred the wrath of many Nigerians, who see him as betraying his benefactor. In a post on Tuesday, Ojudu defended his position after claiming that he had received all sorts of threats from those who could not fathom his “betrayal.”

Now, that is scary, even though it is in the character of Nigerian politics. Why is this a frightening scenario?
The first reason is that these men belong to the same political family. So, there should be no malice at all. If politics were merely for the nation’s service, one would expect an attempt to reach a consensus. If they cannot achieve that, members of the political family should wish the two candidates well, go to the polls, vote for the candidate of their choice. When a winner emerges, everyone should rally around to support him in the family’s interest. That way, the family will not lose out.

But the stakes are too high in Nigerian politics, and unlike in places where the common good is a prime concern, politicians here are driven mainly by personal aggrandisement. It becomes more alarming when you imagine that the current heat is about winning a party’s ticket. Nobody’s candidacy is sure yet but enemies have been made and threats issued.

That is why I worry about how much democracy Nigerians have in their constitution. In Nigeria’s democracy without democrats, published in my book, The Danfo Driver in All of Us, I argue that “most of us grew up under very undemocratic conditions. Our fathers were the all-in-all at home, and the only time mother had a voice was when daddy was away. It goes to say that daddy’s absence was the only time the child could hope to whisper one or two things to mum. So, we grew up in homes where we could not express ourselves or choose the people we associated with… As this happens, we already would have missed out on the opportunity to cultivate some fundamental attributes of democracy-freedom of expression, freedom of association, and tolerance for the other view…”

This, to my mind, is the fulcrum of the issue. It is a trap into which everyone, including Ojudu, would have fallen at one time or another in their lives. If he thinks back, the senator would probably have labelled another person a traitor of the Tinubu cause at one time or another. Today, the chickens have come home to roost and he is the one being roasted for the same reason!

Yet, people like Ojudu, who speak their minds, are not the worst kind of trouble for a political family. As we speak, there are possibly hundreds of thousands of people, who still eat from the same plate as Tinubu, while their hearts are with Osibanjo and a possible plethora of other hopefuls. This latter group is the political sleight of hand of the worst sort, the very one for which Ojudu’s critics should be wary. There is a lot of hypocrisy; people pretend to love and follow politicians but they are only playing games. That is why people like the late Gani Fawehinmi did not become president. Isn’t the enemy you know better than a friend for whom you have no assurances?
Whatever it is, however, there are some things Nigerians must begin to understand about democracy. One is that democracy is about the freedom of people to make choices. If there was to be another name for democracy, it should be freedom or liberty. We must therefore begin to respect the rights of people to choose and associate freely without threatening their existence.

The second thing is that democracy and blind loyalty are diametrical opposites. Democracy is about interests, which are subject to change time and again. So, regardless of your affiliations with people, if they no longer serve your interests, you are free to make choices that satisfy those interests at the time. This is the reality of democracy to which Nigerians must begin to adapt.
The third thing, and a corollary to the foregoing, is that we must begin to divorce ourselves from the emotions that overtake us when we talk about politics in Nigeria. If the development of Nigeria were the goal of every politician and those who support them, we would understand that the more aspirants we have for offices, the better for the country. Competence, compassion and patriotism, rather than fraternal considerations, will dominate our considerations.

When voted into office, we must also realise that politicians do not own anything by themselves. While appointing someone into office may be counted as an act of the executive’s generosity, it is indeed a call to serve, which should ordinarily be sacrificial rather than beneficial.

A significant challenge with leadership in Nigeria is seeing it as a bazaar where the most loyal people must reap bountifully. While there is nothing wrong with rewarding loyalty, the priority should be on the capacity to effect change. The positions to which people are appointed belong to Nigeria, and while politicians may dispense in exchange for favours, the Nigerian people are the legitimate owners of public offices.

Most importantly, we should develop the capacity for tolerance and avoid the totalitarian tendencies towards which our inability to accept the choices of others pushes us. This country belongs to every Nigerian, and nothing, except the provisions of S. 131 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended), should prevent anyone from aspiring to the presidency. This point is even more instructive for the Yoruba, which witnessed stories of rivalries and betrayals about half a century back and from which it is yet to recover.

Fortunately, Tinubu, whose foray into the ring has already energised the democratic process, appears to be a politician with a good understanding of this reality. A casual consideration of his political tragedy shows at least three associates, who left his fold for years, but are back and in good positions currently. There is Adesewe Ogunlewe, Musiliu Obanikoro, and Demola Seriki. That is how politics should be: an opportunity to live and let live. Every Nigerian should understand this!

ABUJA – As various groups flaunt the credentials of their preferred candidate for president in next year’s general elections, a coalition of women groups, under the aegis of Coalition of Women for Osinbajo, has suggested that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo be adopted as concensus presidential candidate for the party.

Addressing reporters during a press conference at The Progressive Project (TPP) office in Abuja on Wednesday, members of the coalition made a six-point declaration that includes a call for President Muhammadu Buhari and the entire members of the Federal Executive Council to consider adopting Osinbajo as APC’s consensus presidential candidate.

Led by their chairperson, Hajia Rabi Dauda, who is also the leader of pro-Osinbajo Progressive Women’s Group, the coalition stressed that the 2023 general election will be a decisive turning point for APC and the entire nation, saying that all attention be focussed on their six-point demand:

“We strongly affirm Nigerian women’s utmost confidence in the candidature of Professor Yemi Osinbajo as a people-focused leader with the right intellectual capacity and innate leadership qualities to move Nigeria forward, with an emphatic attention to women’s progress and development.

“We demand the emergence of truly people-focused leadership at APC’s forthcoming convention and presidential primaries, either through consensus or voting processes as we look forward to the unfettered emergence of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as APC presidential flag bearer in 2023 elections.
