VP joins Kebbi Governor, wife to mark Mass Literacy Day *Says access to education ticket to enjoyment of all human, civil and socio-political rights. Leaders at all levels should consider the education of their people, especially children and girls, as a duty, enabling them access more socio-economic opportunities and live better lives, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. Prof. Osinbajo stated this in Abuja on Saturday evening at an event organized to mark the 2021 Mass Literacy Day by the MALLPAI Foundation, a non-governmental organisation founded in 2009 by Hajiya Aisha Atiku Bagudu, the wife of the Kebbi State Governor. MALLPAI, which means in full “Mass Literacy for the Less Privileged and Almajiri Initiative” addresses concerns around illiteracy and out-of-school children, with a commitment to enhancing the quality of life by supporting and empowering initiatives that improve access to health, education and agriculture opportunities for Nigerians. According to the Vice President, “we owe our people the duty to educate them. We owe our people a duty to lift their minds to the level where they can benefit maximally from their environment and give benefit to others.” The VP further noted that access to “education is a ticket to the full enjoyment of all human, civil and socio-political rights. “So, at the most basic level, the ability to read and write, not just in one’s own language, but in global languages as well is crucial. To be deprived of education is to be deprived of the means of pursuit of a dignified existence where one can fully contest or collaborate with others for the benefits that life offers.” Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo said, “every study confirms that education, especially of women, has a multiplier effect on everything around them. It usually means a longer life span for themselves and their children. It means that they are less likely to die of communicable diseases, since they are more likely to understand best practices in hygiene, sanitation and follow useful materials on health care.” While commending Hajiya Bagudu for her commitment and hard work, the VP noted that, “I truly believe that the more lives you transform in the communities you serve, the more the mind-set will shift in those communities towards embracing formal education for all.” Prof. Osinbajo then commended the work of the MALLPAI Foundation, since 2009, for “doing the difficult work of improving access to education and creating skills acquisition opportunities for the poor and underprivileged communities.” He observed that getting disadvantaged out-of-school children into formal education is a massive challenge, especially where, in some cases, “the prevailing culture is an obstacle.” But he noted that the by the work of the Foundation it had been shown, especially in the case of girls, that by being sensitive and understanding it is possible to surmount socio-cultural beliefs and practices that hinder access of girls to education. “What is even more touching for me is that you have included those who were left behind as children, and are creating new opportunities for them as adults, through skills acquisition training and financial aid,” the VP added. Other dignitaries at the event besides Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State and his wife, included Senators Smart Adeyemi and Olubunmi Adetunmbi; Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba; Deputy Minister of Education, Malawi, Madalitso Wirima Kambauwa; former First Lady of Nigeria, Hajiya Maryam Abacha, and the wife of the Chief of Army Staff, Hajiya Salamatu Yahaya, among others. ‘Laolu Akande Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media and Publicity Office of the Vice President |
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday tasked governments at all levels to deliver on their roles on provision of basic education for the benefit of all Nigerians, especially the girl child. Osinbajo made the call as the special guest at the Mallpai Foundation 2021 Literacy Day, with the theme: “Promoting Literacy for Better Education in Nigeria,” in Abuja. According to him, education is the best ticket to the full enjoyment of all human civil, socio-political and economic rights. Osinbajo said: “So, when we talk about human rights that have been declared, the only way to access those rights, including economic rights, is by education at the most basic level. “The ability to read and write, not just in one’s own language, but other global languages is crucial; to be deprived of education is to be deprived of means of pursuit of a dignified existence. “It is the only means where one can fully contest or collaborate with others for the benefits that life offers and it is so important for us, especially those who are policy makers. “We owe our people the duty to educate them, we owe our people the duty to lift their minds to the level where they can benefit maximally from their environment and give benefits to others. “Every study, every survey that you have seen confirms that education, especially of women, has a multiplier effect on everything around them. “If you educate a woman, she transforms her environment completely. It usually means a longer life span for herself and for her children. “It means they are less likely to die of communicable diseases, since they understand the modern practices of hygiene and sanitation and follow useful material on healthcare. “All of these things are possible; everything is possible if the mind of a human being is educated. “Every child has talent, every child that is born is born with some talents and some abilities, but nothing will happen if they are not educated to express those abilities.” The vice president commended the Foundation for its initiative towards improving people’s access to education and skills acquisition opportunities for poor and underprivileged communities. He also noted that such had enabled disadvantaged and out- of-school children surmount the hurdles of getting formal education, especially on account of prevailing culture. “In every zone of the country where there has been free education, particularly Western region, there was a great deal of resistance in Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s introduction of free education.” He reiterated that a lot needs to be done through the courage of individual and corporate convictions, for the goals of girl-child education to be achieved. Also speaking at the event, Gov. Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi State commended the Federal Government’s efforts under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari, to provide basic education, aimed at meeting future challenges. According to him, with several successes, Kebbi state had keyed into some educational programmes that provided access to those without access to education. “We challenged Professors of Higher institutions and told them that under our Universal Basic Education Board law, our best brains should lead where the greatest challenges are in the state. “These professors accepted and today 21 Local Education Authorities in Kebbi State are led by dons from across different universities. “The remarkable success recorded is that they were able to face the challenges as trusted and able to look at the government, to say we can do better here and differently. “In spite of this, the community has to get involved; today there is a consequence in poor investment in getting children back to school, especially the nomadic. “There is therefore the need for society not to avoid inclusion of young people in accessing quality education.” The Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said that what the Foundation had done was expected of everybody, saying “government is all of us”. According to him, since 2009, the Founder of Mallpai Foundation, Hajiya Aisha Atiku-Bagudu, started this programme she had reached out and touched many lives positively. Nwajiuba said: “The only way we are going to uplift one another is to help one another grow. “Essentially, education provides that something that turns nobody into somebody, by putting something inside that body. “The thing you put inside that body, you put in the brain and that is what education enables a country to do, we are all here to support Mallpai and recommit ourselves that no child is left behind.” The event attracted people from all walks of life and featured panel discussion on policies aimed at reshaping the education of the girl-child.

The Osinbajo's idea of Pentecost Tax is not necessarily monetary but an obligation of constantly sharing the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. |
I am very happy for the vast development Buhari/Osinbajo embark on ,at least the masses can see a tangible things that they use the loan for unlike the previous administration who always parties with our money |
STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE OSINBAJO AT KUMUYI BOOK PRESENTATION THROWS CHALLENGE TO LEADERS: DOCUMENT YOUR EXPERIENCES TO CHANGE THE WORLD * VP adds: Kumuyi not only preaches holiness, but lives it himself The obligation of successful people to write their stories, to share the histories of phenomena they have become, in order to instruct, to admonish, and to inspire, would change the world to a better society, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. Prof. Osinbajo stated this today in Lagos, at the presentation of the biography of the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor W. F. Kumuyi, jointly written by Banji Ojewale, Segun Babatope, Emeka Ezeze and Tunde Opeibi According to him, "every person, especially those who succeed in their endeavours in life, owes society three taxes. The first is income taxes - personal income tax, and if you own a company, company, or corporation tax. "The second is a social tax, another name for that is philanthropy. The obligation of the wealthy to give back to society. "The third tax is a civic tax; the obligation of the successful to write their stories, to share the histories of the phenomena they have become, in order to instruct, to admonish and to inspire the present and the future." In summation of taxes citizens are obligated to pay, the VP added that there is a fourth tax. This he called "the Pentecost Tax," which he said was for successful preachers of the gospel. "But for the successful preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ, there is the fourth tax, this is the Pentecost Tax. The obligation of men and women since the day of Pentecost, the day described in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to preach the gospel, to tell the story of their missionary journeys. The miracles, signs, and wonders that God has wrought on that journey, the deprivations, the fastings, and the persecutions. The victories and failures, the mountains and the valleys.” According to the Vice President, "this is a huge responsibility. But the saints before us discharged that responsibility so we are the beneficiaries of the Acts of the Apostles, the stories of the men and women who carried the gospel first to Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. “Their stories have encouraged generations of Christians since, their recorded experiences may seem to make them stars, but they are meant to instruct us in adherence to sound doctrine, to rebuke us and instruct us unto righteousness.” Continuing, Prof. Osinbajo said the book, "Kumuyi - the Defender of the Faith," is the continuation of the baton handed down over to our generation since the day of Pentecost. While unveiling the book, he stated that "the book, Kumuyi the Defender of the Faith, begins the work of discharging the Pentecostal tax obligation of Pastor Kumuyi. The book tells the story of the incredible work of the Holy Spirit in his life and Ministry. How by His grace, he not only preached and continues to preach holiness to a whole generation, but lived and lives it himself daily. Giving a summary of the book, the Vice President mentioned that, “the book tells the story of how the Holy Spirit worked miracles through him (Kumuyi) and how from a Bible study group of 15 members in 1973, the ministry grew to what is now the Deeper Christian Life Ministry and at one point, with 120,000 members, making it the third-largest single congregation in the world.” Admiring the General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Prof Osinbajo said, “Pastor Kumuyi has kept faith with the great commission, preaching the gospel to all persons, without compromise or embellishment, keeping his eyes and focus on Jesus, and keeping faith with the words of that Deeper Life anthem - “Jesus is our only message, Jesus all our thence shall be. We will lift up Jesus forever. Jesus only will we see.” Commending the authors for persuading Pastor Kumuyi to accept writing the book, the Vice President noted that "this is not really a book about Pastor Kumuyi, it is about the grace and mercies of God in the life of His servant, and how by His mercies, his servant Kumuyi has in the words of the Scripture that is said to be on the backdrop of every Deeper Life pulpit the world over, is fulfilling the instruction to “earnestly contend for the faith once delivered unto the saints,” according to Jude 1:3. While delivering his speech, the keynote speaker, Prof. Dapo Asaju, used Chief Obafemi Awolowo and writings about great bible characters such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the Acts of the Apostles, as examples, urging Nigerians to write down their experiences for future beneficiaries. In his address titled "Leadership, Integrity, and Transparency," Prof. Asaju said the exemplary lives of people like Pastor W. F. Kumuyi, would help change the life of corruption which has ravaged the country. Also in his remarks, the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, praised Pastor Kumuyi for his leadership, integrity, and holiness in the service to God. In his response, Pastor Kumuyi, said he did not know about the writing of the book, but he gave his approval when the authors approached him. He also said God called him in 1964 and sent him to preach the gospel of His love to humanity. A big thanks to the vice president of Nigeria…… Prof Yemi Osinbajo for representing Nigeria in Guinea but all in all the true democracy should be our watchword because it gives a lot advantages to the citizenary |
By Abdul Mohammed As reprehensible as the murky waters of the Nigeria politics can be, one would be shell-shocked that it still has the proclivity of breeding some politicians, activists and individuals who canonize themselves as saints; clad themselves in the garbs and regalia of pietists condemning “sinners” and canonizing the “saints”. They technically assume the sacred throne of God, dispensing judgments and discernments, while forgeting when they judge others, they do not define them, but hypocritically define themselves. In fact, they are without character or coherence. They are those metaphoric bats who are neither rats nor birds, but always bite and hide. This tribe of hypocrites orate, sermonise and evangelise integrity from the the den of corruption. The accusations that have been coming in torrents against the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, easily and widely regarded the best VP ever, are ones that remind one of the biblical reference of the Book of First Samuel, chapter 16, verse 11, wherein David was not more than a Shepherd boy who loved to take care of his father’s sheep, but bereft of attention from his family and even despised by his brothers or were perhaps made to feel insecure by him. Obviously, being extraordinarily good at his duties and those delegated to him by President Muhammadu Buhari, VP Osinbajo attracts envy and bitterness from those who wished they were in his shoes. Hence what seems their desperation to mount campaign of calumny against him in the media, both the traditional and the new media. But just like David, Professor Osinbajo is comforted and strengthened by his strong faith and confidence, drawn from a good conscience. Indeed, who God has blessed, no one can curse. Love Osinbajo or loathe him for any reason, his good deeds will remain indelible and undeletable as the Nigeria’s most vibrant Vice President ever. One good example was the recent attempt by mischief-makers to twist his comment on the security situation in the country. They went to town to scream that the VP declared that “kidnapping is over exaggerated and not entirely new”. But the truth of the matter is that the VP, while fielding questions in New York, only made reference to the social media as being too hysterical most times. That information disseminated on such spaces is often not verified. His exact words: “I really will urge that you don’t rely entirely for information on social media. I think that the social media tends to be hysterical about practically everything. “I think there is also a lot of politics involved in some of the information as it comes up. “I think it is also important to point out that this new wave of issues of security came immediately after the elections. “And there is always a connection between this issue of security and elections because many times, politicians’ arm several of these individuals during the electioneering period. “Immediately after an election cycle, many of them, having nothing to do and with arms all over the place, resort to the fastest way of making money which is to abduct somebody and ask for a ransom. And that is just one side of the problem. “But let me dimension it so that you can really understand it better. “When people say there is security problem here and there, it is not one thing, it is several different things but if it is described as one thing then it will look bigger than it really is. “And I am deeply worried about the fact that we might find ourselves unable to resolve these problems unless we drill down to see what the problems are.” Now, from the foregoing, where did the Vice President deny that there was no problem or show insensitivity as the mischief-makers were trying to imply or insinuate? Another favorite turf of these agents of misinformation and disinformation is religion. Of course, some critics of President Buhari are wont to accuse him of “Islam Agenda” rightly or wrongly. Now, without any proof or conscience, they are toiling hard to pin the label of “Christianization agenda” on the VP. This reached a rather ludicrous turn recently when the otherwise discerning columnist, Farouk Kperogi, joined in the retail of this fallacy. In his article entitled “Pantami is my friend but he can’t be defended” (published on Saturday, April 17, 2021), the US-based writer wrote: “Yemi Osinbajo, for instance, has been accused of being an intolerant, narrow-minded Christian extremist who wallows in his Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) bubble, who employs only Yoruba people who belong to the RCCG.” Mr. Kperogi must have penned these in a blur of incomprehension as this is acutely inaccurate. He did not hide his unfounded bias when he went further in his attempt to rehash false claims on Osinbajo in his follow-up article (on Sunday, April 18): “When You Piss Off Two Extremist Groups on Opposite Ends”. Kperogi wrote: “The Pentecostal partisans, particularly of the RCCG crowd, are ticked off that I mentioned Yemi Osinbajo’s name in the column, even though I made it clear that while he (Osinbajo) has been accused of RCCG bigotry with solid evidence, to his credit, he hasn’t been associated with extremist and exclusivist religious rhetoric in his past homilies.” This is another false representation of VP Osinbajo by Kperogi in his article, and that it was on a subject matter that has no remote bearing to the VP or his person, reeks of some sinister motives. But expectedly, the author was called out on social media by many Nigerians who knew better than to gulp his cock and bull tales on the VP. It is clear that Kperogi based his ridiculous comments on the VP on another ridiculous article by one Dr Musbau Akinbode titled “Osinbajo’s Stealth Christianization Agenda”, which was a regurgitation of spurious claims made in 2017 by one Dr. Ismaila Farouk. The claims made against Osinbajo in both articles are dead in the water. Kperogi’s comments on the VP are not only riddled with inaccuracies and outright falsehood, his attempt to subtly give wings to discredited opinions by fake news merchants should be condemned for what is it: a communication gaffe. Overall, the salient point to note is that VP Osinbajo respects and sees everyone first as Nigerian, regardless of tribe, ethnicity or faith and this shows in the composition of staff in the Office of the Vice President, which has already been described as a mini-Nigeria. A little research by these people with adversarial mindset would have sufficed. Let’s have a little roll call of the key staff of Vice President. A flip through the list of Osinbajo’️s aides showed that Mr. Ade Ipaye, who is the head of his team as Deputy Chief of Staff, is not a Christian but a Muslim from Lagos State. Other aides in his office are: Director of Protocol, Ambassador Abdullahi Gwari, Muslim from Yobe State; Special Adviser on Social Investments, Maryam Uwais, Muslim from Kano State; Senior Special Assistant on Legal, Research and Compliance, Dr. Balkisu Saidu, Muslim from Sokoto State; Senior Special Assistant on Economic Affairs, Edobor Iyamu, Christian from Edo State; Special Adviser on Power, Dr. Tochukwu Nwachukwu, Christian from Imo State; Special Adviser on National Economic Council (NEC), Donald Wokoma, Christian from Rivers State; Special Assistant on Social Investment, Mohammed Braimah, Muslim from Kwara State; Special Assistant on Inter-governmental Affairs, Abdul Rahman Baffa, Muslim from Kano State; Special Assistant on Economy, Peter Dimike, Christian from Imo State; Special Assistant to Power Team, Anita Otubu, Christian from Delta State; Zainab Edu, Assistant to Special Assistant on SIP, Kano State; Special Assistant to Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Bege Bala (BPE), Christian from Kaduna State; Assistant on Social Investment, Amina Edu, Muslim from Kaduna State. Others are: Personal Assistant to the Vice President, Gambo Mansur, Muslim from Gombe State; Personal Assistant to the Vice President, Murtala Aliyu, Muslim from Kogi State; EA-DCOS, Nkoli Anyaoku, Christian from Anambra State; Special Assistant on Rule of Law, Zainab Buba Galadima, Muslim from Yobe State; Special Asssitant, Administration, Koko Iyamu, Christian from Akwa Ibom State; Personal Assistant to the Vice President, Edewede Akhidenor, Christian from Edo State. Others are Special Advisers or Senior Special Assistants to the President seconded to the office of the vice-president. Those in this category are Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs (Office of Vice -President), Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Christian from Ekiti State, Special Adviser Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu (Office of Vice -President), Christian from Ogun State, Mr Louis Odion, Christian from Edo state(Senior Special Technical Assistant on Media and Senior Special Assistant to the President (Office of Vice -President) on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, who happens to be the only RCCG pastor among them. As a matter of fact, Mr Akande was based in the United States when he was hired. Wokoma and Tochukwu left after first term but now, the office also has Chris Ngwodo-SSA Policy and Ahmad Zakari, Special Adviser, Infrastructures. From the above, any objective and discernible mind would be able to decipher facts from fiction, even by those who retail their supposed intellectual fecundity. *Mohammed wrote from Abuja

By Kehinde Adeoye Lawyer and social commentator, Liborous Oshoma, has advised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to consider fielding the current Nigeria’s Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, as their presidential candidate in 2023 general elections. He said this during a live political programme on Arise News TV, Tuesday afternoon, speaking on the topic: “Politics of Succession in Nigeria,” with keen focus on the forthcoming 2023 elections, the politics and theatrics of rotation. Oshoma, the Head Attorney at the Liborous Oshoma Chambers, said he expects that the party would look the way of Vice President Osinbajo in their choice of candidate for the 2023 elections, especially with the way he handled himself as Nigeria’s Acting President. He said: “One would have expected that with that kind of arrangement, naturally, you begin to groom or look at the direction of your Vice President who people had belief in that he has the capacity. “We saw what happened the few times he acted as the President, and how he was able to calm nerves, calm tension and give purposeful leadership. But what happened thereafter, people didn’t like it,” Oshoma said. Speaking further on the choice of party candidates, he said rotation should be secondary. He emphasized on the need to place a premium of competence. “When it is time for critical thinking, actually pick that person on the basis of competence, but we leave out competence and anybody is thrown at us, and that’s why we have consistently sacrificed our best at the alter of rational presidency, mediocrity and what have you.” “Look at President Buhari’s résumé, look at his Vice President’s today, they are poles apart, but then the man is just seated there, his competence is not even tapped into and then people say resign, he should have resigned. In Nigerian government, the moment you resign, you are demarketing that government.” He said that President Buhari got an immense support during the 2015 elections solely because people believed in Prof. Osinbajo. According to him: “A lot of people supported President Buhari from the South simply because of the belief that Prof Yemi Osinbajo had the capacity and we saw what he did in Lagos State, all the innovative ideas that he brought on board.” Oshoma made allusions to the time of Obafemi Awolowo and Olusegun Obasanjo, indicating that most of their close associates only imbibed their political philosophy and way of life while neglecting the aspect of grooming and mentorship. https://thedailyleaks.com/2023-field-osinbajo-for-presidency-liborous-oshoma-tells-apc/

“Much of the global investment in clean energy will need to go into Africa. However, instead of prioritizing efforts to redirect global capital to our nations, efforts are currently underway to limit the development of gas projects in Africa, violating the principles of equity and justice enshrined in global agreements”, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN. He made this submission while speaking during a virtual conference themed: Climate, Conflict, and Demography in Africa jointly hosted by the International Crisis Group, the Royal African Society, and African Confidential publications on Tuesday. In the past, Prof. Osinbajo had at different forums, raised the issue of financing of gas projects in developing countries, like Nigeria, advocating a just transition and more effective engagements towards the target of Net-Zero Emission by 2050. At a meeting held earlier in February with the British Member of Parliament and COP26 President-Designate, Mr. Alok Sharma, Prof. Osinbajo restated Nigeria’s support and commitment to the Climate Change agreement but cited the planned restrictions on financing of gas projects in African countries as a potential setback. Also, in March this year, at a meeting with a delegation from the European Union (EU) led by its Executive Vice President, Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis, the VP reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the global green energy initiative but called for a just transition to zero-emission. Speaking at the virtual event yesterday, Prof Osinbajo explained the necessity of gas in developing nations, “because the role of gas as a bridge fuel, to increase the share of renewable energy in the energy mix, and rapidly transition away from firewood-based cooking fuel to natural gas-based cooking, yields both environmental and health benefits. The Vice President emphasized that despite Africa’s contribution to climate change being negligible, “we continue to be the most adversely impacted by climate change, so much so that public resources that could help modernize the energy mix has to be redirected towards adaptation spending. “But worse, we are being compelled to make disproportionately huge sacrifices as the wealthier countries continue full speed on defunding gas projects and insisting that gas projects must be defunded as an important component of the drive towards net-zero emissions by 2030.” Regarding the amount of investments required in clean electricity – generation and grid storage infrastructure, Prof Osinbajo stated that to get the world on track for net-zero emissions by 2050, it will cost more than US$1.6 trillion per year by 2030. “This is over four times more than what was invested in these sectors in 2020. In regions like Africa, installed electricity capacity will need to double by 2030 and increase at least five-fold by 2050,” he said. Giving reasons for his argument against defunding gas projects, Prof Osinbajo said, “our first obligation will always be to ensure the wellbeing of our people, through access to development services including electricity, healthcare, education, safe jobs, and a safe environment, including access to clean cooking fuels. “We must prioritize solutions that align with development and climate agendas, this is absolutely important. The global climate conversation can only be equitable and inclusive by putting all people in all geographies at the heart of the endeavor to save the planet.” In the same vein, the VP mentioned the need to “recognize and plan for growing energy demand; its increase will be critical for driving growth, jobs and economy-wide progress, and delivering healthcare and education services. Efforts are already underway in my country, Nigeria, and in several countries across the continent to transition to large shares of clean energy sources to do so.” In attendance at the virtual event were the Minister of Environment for Ghana, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, who represented the President of Ghana; Chairperson of the Royal African Society, Ms. Arunma Oteh; Patrick Smith, Publisher of African Confidential, and the event was moderated by Bola Mosuro. https://thenewsnigeria.com.ng/2021/09/15/rich-countries-reduction-of-gas-funding-dangerous-for-africa-osinbajo/

ABOUT 300 ‘support groups on Facebook are campaigning for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to emerge as Nigeria’s president in 2023, checks by The ICIR have revealed. And more than 200 others are rooting for the APC Chieftain Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Governor of Kogi State Yahaya Bello. The figure was obtained from collating active Facebook accounts through which the various support groups are advancing the presidential ambition of the former vice president. In all, more than 500 such support groups are currently campaigning for four politicians – Abubakar, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Lagos State governor Bola Tinubu and Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello. Bello has signified his intention to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s president in 2023. Tinubu and Abubakar are yet to formally declare their intentions to contest the presidential election in 2023, but they are expected to be among the leading contenders when the race is eventually thrown open by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Osinbajo is not known to harbour any presidential ambition, but several groups have, in recent times, been making a case for him to succeed Buhari in 2023. Created on October 12, 2018, the group is located in Ibadan and has 202,000 members as at September 14. According to its Facebook profile, the group’s mission is to “disseminate information about the presidency ambition (sic) of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON.” Another group – Support Atiku for 2023 – was created on December 20, 2017, with the name last changed on June 16, 2021. Located in Abuja, the group currently has 893 members, and is aimed to “inform Nigerians nationwide of the need to support Atiku for a better Nigeria.” With 1,800 members, another group ‘Atiku for President 2023,’ describes itself as a pressure group for ensuring the election of Abubakar Atiku for president in 2023. The group was created on February 9, 2013 but the name was last changed on March 16, 2021. Another prominent Pro-Atiku group is one known as ‘Atiku Abubakar is Coming Next Year.’ The group was created on November 25, 2019 and currently has 19,000 members. Atiku Youths Campaign Group, currently with 380 members, was created on November 1, 2018, as a ‘platform for all Nigerian youths with a common goal to support, campaign and help market the ideas of Atiku Abubakar.’ On the group’s Facebook profile, Abubakar was described as a politician “whose main vision is to transform, unite this nation, stop the killings in the land and grow our economy with the best hands.” Another group, the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Group Organisation, was created on September 17, 2020 and currently has 671 members. As of September 14, another Pro-Atiku group – Atiku Support Group, 2023 General Election – created on May 14, 2020, has 25,000 members. The ICIR’s checks show that many of the existing pro-Atiku groups were formed to campaign for the former vice president in the 2019 presidential election, which he contested as the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Abubakar lost the election to the incumbent President Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Some of the groups which promoted Abubakar’s candidacy in 2019 have had to change their names to reflect the subsequent goal of supporting his presidential ambition once again in 2023. However, others who campaigned for Abubakar in 2019 did not change their names to reflect the current 2023 agenda continue to use their platforms to mobilise support for the former vice president ahead of the next presidential poll. Among the Pro-Atiku groups are also many which were formed after the 2019 elections, in anticipation of his expected presidential bid in 2023. Groups campaigning for Abubakar to succeed Buhari as Nigeria’s president also include U and I for Atiku 2023, Dr Atiku Abubakar Support Group, Atiku Support Group Youth Movement, Atiku Students Support Group, Atiku Diaspora Support Group the USA, Atiku Support Vanguard Nationwide, Coalition of Atiku Support Groups, Atiku Special Support Group, 774 Support for Atiku 2023, Coalition of Atiku Support Groups Initiative (CASGI), and Atiku Support Group Come 2023 General Election, among others. https://www.icirnigeria.org/2023-more-than-500-support-groups-campaign-for-tinubu-atiku-osinbajo-bello-on-facebook/ |

Nigeria need a leader and hardworking man like Osinbajo |
By Oluwafemi Popoola Chairman, Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL), Debo Adeniran, has identified the current Nigeria’s Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as the most qualified and experienced person to lead the country to development ahead of the 2023 presidential run. Adeniran said this on Monday, while answering questions on the Arise News TV live programme, with the topic: “2023: Who Leads Nigeria?” Throwing his weight behind Osinbajo, the chairman of the civil society organisation maintained that the Vice President has the requisite qualities expected from a good leader. He said Osinbajo has the cognate experience, capacity and courage which he made manifest when he was Acting President in 2017. He said the Vice President implemented numerous policies, programmes and agenda that endeared him to the people across the country when he stood in for his boss while the President was away on medical holiday abroad. According to him, “The last time during the first tenure of this administration when the President had to travel for medical care and stayed for so long. Somebody actually stood in for him and that person implemented a couple of programmes and agenda that actually won him into the mind of the people because people were yearning for a new policy direction, and when this gentleman came, he used the opportunity, and that is the present Vice President.” “I don’t have to begin to shy away from the reality because if we have to recruit somebody fresh, where will you say he has a cognate experience from. If somebody had not been in government at the level of federal executive and has not distinguished himself in his professional calling and has not come up with a kind of skill, capacity, courage and all of that then how would you be able to convince people that this fellow will grow overnight to the level of implementing people’s agenda that will change the polity for the better. So basically I am talking about the present Vice President. I don’t care whether he came from anybody’s background, anywhere he comes from, the quality and capacity is what we should look at,” Adeniran said. When asked if security would be a defining factor for the potential candidates vying for the office of the president going into 2023 presidential race. Adeniran said security will ony be one of the defining factors but not the main defining factor for 2023 presidential candidates. He said: “The main defining factor will be how to galvanize our potentiality towards ensuring that there is improvement in the economy that will create job for the jobless, that will take care of scholarship of those that require scholarship, that will make adequate provision for those who could not secure a job and will keep them busy in legitimate area of engagement rather than leaving them on their own.” What we should face now is how to diversify the economy the more. We should focus less on petroleum because it’s getting out of fashion. We should allow farmers to go back to their farms. We should allow utilities to be readily available for the people. There should be power supply, there should be energy, there should be drinkable water and there should be health care delivery for the people. Recall that This Day newspaper on July 9, 2021 had published a list of 30 eminent Nigerians likely to emerge the country’s presidential candidates following an exclusive interview of a former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, on Arise News Channel TV when he gave a cryptic description of an ideal Nigerian president in 2023 and hinted at the qualities that Nigerians should consider in their choice for the next president. In a subsequent conversation on Arise News Channel TV on August 10 by political analysts on who should emerge the nation’s president, among those eminently qualified Nigerians listed by THISDAY, the name of the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo was consistently mentioned during the programme as the most qualified person, noting that “Anybody who has been Vice President for eight years should be a frontline candidate. For instance, one of the analysts, Mr Mahmud Jega, in his reaction lauded the Vice President’s statesmanship, saying: “Osinbajo is extremely capable technocratically to lead this country in 2023. He has all the qualities and is naturally in the lead ahead of the others.” https://thedailyleaks.com/2023-osinbajo-most-qualified-person-to-lead-says-adeniran-cacol-boss/

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; his wife, Dolapo; and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State among others on Sunday watched the stage play of the drama: “Awo.” It took place at Glover Memorial hall, Marina, Lagos, which was recently renovated by the Lagos State Government. Dolapo is a grand-daughter of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in whose honour the play was put together. The play: “Awo the Man, His Jewel and…” written by Makinde Adeniran, was a celebration of the life and times of late Awolowo and his wife, Dideolu. The play, intended to examine the meaning of leadership, was packaged by the Duke of Shomolu Productions. It is a human narrative of the history of a man devoted to humanity. Copiously choreographed, it is an enactment of the interplay of factors in Nigeria’s struggle for independence with the late Awo as focus. Sanwo-Olu, in his remarks, said he was proud of the work and its significance to Lagos. “Let’s bring history, culture, entertainment and theatre back to Lagos,” he said. The governor said that Awolowo was imprisoned at Ibeju-Lekki, adding that it was his blessings that led to the massive development currently being witnessed in Lekki. On his part, Segun Awolowo, a grandson of Awolowo and Executive Director, Nigerian Export Promotion Council, applauded the script writer and producer for a wonderful performance. He said he particularly impressed with the musical effects in the play. Also, Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker, House of Representatives, said people were brought back to life through musicals, drama. According to Gbajabiamila, the late nationalist was brought to life through the show. He commended the producers, writer, musicians and entire crew. Adeniran, Director and writer of Awo, told newsmen that the intention was to begin to reengineer the system of leadership. Adeniran said: “One of the things that we all can testify to today is that Nigeria needs to relearn leadership. “So, we chose the person of Awo, representing those old figures.” |
