Politics / Nigerians In Diaspora Mount Opposition Against Buhari by okiezman(m): 2:29pm On Jan 18, 2015
Ahead of next month’s elections, a groundswell of opposition from Nigerians in the Diaspora is being mounted against the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the February 14 presidential election, Muhammadu Buhari,

The opposition against the former military ruler is being championed by the United States chapter of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), the flagship association of Nigerians living abroad.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Hilton Garden, Washington DC, Victor Ugho, the immediate past Vice-President of NIDO, who is the current President of the Georgia State chapter of the association with headquarters in Atlanta, urged the former Head of State to perish the thought of becoming the next president of the country, saying that the world has moved past the like of Buhari.

Ugho expressed regrets that Buhari has allowed himself to be pushed around by some people whom, he said, were looking for ways to cause more pains to Nigeria.

He faulted the move by Buhari to seek the presidency as a civilian president, noting that Buhari, as a military Head of State, had ample opportunity to turn the country around.

“As a matter of sincerity, I do not think Buhari is the best candidate for Nigeria at this period in time. He was there as Head of State, what did he do?

“Again, he has not told us what he is going to do differently. We need continuity; the choice should not be based on tribal sentiment. “Let him tell us how he is going to fix the so-called terrible situation he has identified. We need somebody who will not bring disunity.”

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of NIDO, Ndubusi George, called on Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to think wisely and vote for the right candidate in next month’s presidential election.

According to him, “the devil we know is better than the angel we do not know.

“What we need now in the country is for all of us to unite and support President Jonathan who has been tested and trusted to lead the country for another four years.

“It is a fact that you should not expect something that had been damaged for years to be fixed overnight; it requires patience and perseverance to achieve this.”

In the same vein, the Diaspora Campaign Network (DCN) described the presidential aspiration of Buhari as laughable.

National Coordinator of the organisation, Franklin Ekechukwu, said Nigerians could not afford to return the management of the nation’s economy to a vestige of the military era during which time the nation’s economy was damaged.

He said: “Nigeria has made a big stride in the right direction since Jonathan became the president. Nigerians need to exercise patience to allow his policies to manifest.

“It is laughable when somebody who was a retired military dictator suddenly becomes a father of democratic norms, whereas, when as a ruler, he dismissed the constitution and ruled by decree.

“No, Nigeria cannot go back to the old days where anything goes without proper planning.”

On his part, the Secretary General of the Alliance of Nigerians in the Diaspora (ANID), Uche Thomas, said that Buhari’s opinions about democracy is shaped by his military background.

“His understanding of the President’s role in a democracy is shaped by his career and experience as a military dictator; hence, his promptness in declaring his intention to probe and throw Nigerians into jail.”

Politics / APC Rejects Interim Govt., Says Election Must Hold As Scheduled by okiezman(m): 2:11pm On Jan 18, 2015
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it will neither accept an interim government nor a postponement of next month’s elections as being advocated by certain individuals, saying the elections must hold as scheduled on Feb. 14th and 28th 2015.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party warned that any attempt to scuttle the polls in preference for any other arrangement will be resisted by all available constitutional means.
”We are aware that those who are not comfortable with the turning of the political tide in favour of the opposition ahead of the elections are scheming to abort a possible victory for our party, through either an interim government or a postponement of the elections.
”These enemies of Nigeria include those who are worried by the strong anti-corruption stance of our party and its avowed commitment to good governance, and those who favour the status quo of anything goes, bad governance and massive corruption that have left Nigerians deeply pauperized and traumatized,” it said.
APC said those who may consider the two scenarios of interim government and postponement of the elections as outlandish should consider the published but yet-unrefuted statement by one Deji Adeyanju, said to be an official in the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe.
The party quoted Adeyanju, who handles Dr. Okupe’s Twitter Account, as saying in a Blackberry Messenger (BBM) statement: “Buhari can never be President of Nigeria. Quote me any day any time. Instead of Buhari to become President of Nigeria, Nigeria would rather break. A military coup will even be allowed than for Buhari to become the President of a democratic Nigeria quote me any day, any time.”
It said that since the statement has not been refuted, one can safely conclude that it represents the thinking in the presidency circle.
”If a citizen is advocating a military coup against a sitting government just to prevent a supposed election victory of the opposition, it is nothing short of treason. Yet, the security agencies that have been falling over themselves warning against incendiary and inciting statements have not yet swung into action over this inciting statement. This is not encouraging vis-a-vis the non-partisan stand of the security agencies.
”The truth is that what could as well be a Freudian slip by Adeyanju has exposed the depth of panic and desperation in the presidency ahead of next month’s polls. This has also confirmed that those who have been canvassing, either openly or otherwise, the options of interim government or postponement of the elections, are working at the behest of certain forces,” APC said.
The party therefore called on Nigerians to be vigilant and be ready to do everything under the law to protect the nation’s democracy, imperfect as it may be.
It also alerted the international community to the evil machinations of desperate politicians ahead of the forthcoming general elections.
”Our stand is simple but needs to be restated: The 2015 general elections must hold as scheduled all over Nigeria, and our party is ready for the elections. As we stated earlier, we will only accept the outcome of a free, fair, credible and transparent elections, not that of manipulated polls. We will also not agree to the postponement of next month’s elections under any guise, and an interim arrangement plot is totally unacceptable to us. We challenge the ruling PDP to also state its own stand on next month’s polls for the world to note.
”We also challenge the presidency to state its own stand and to also distance itself from the anarchic and treasonable statement by one of its own over the forthcoming polls,” APC said.

Politics / Northern Youths Challenge Buhari Over Certificate by okiezman(m): 5:04pm On Jan 17, 2015
Northern Youth Forum has challenged the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhamadu Buhari (rtd.) to produce his certificates to the electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for him to properly take part in the electoral contest.

The national President of the forum, Engineer Bello Gambo Bich,i said in a press statement signed in Kano  and made available to THISDAY on Saturday, “…General Buhari should do what is required of him by presenting his certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as other presidential candidates have done, instead of hiding behind the fig leaf of constitutionalism.”

The statement further noted that it is true that the relevant section 131(d) of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria does not require Buhari to physically present his certificates but to only show that he ‘has been educated up to at least secondary school level or its equivalent.”

Gambo added: "It is clear that the spirit of that provision demands that he should present Certified True copies of his original certificates because that is the only way that INEC will determine that he has been educated up to secondary school level.’

While dismissing Buhari’s attestation that the original copies of his certificates were with the military authorities, the group reminded him that such claim was not enough to fulfill the constitutional requirement.

Politics / Police Fire Tear Gas At Fresh Charlie Hebdo Protest In Niger by okiezman(m): 2:09pm On Jan 17, 2015
Police on Saturday fired tear gas at a fresh demonstration in Niger against French weekly Charlie Hebdo’s publication of a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed, according to an AFP reporter on the scene.
At least 1,000 youths assembled at the grand mosque in the capital Niamey, some of them throwing rocks at police while others burned tyres and chanted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is Greatest”).
Saturday’s protest came a day after a policeman and three civilians were killed and 45 injured in protests against Charlie Hebdo in Niger’s second city of Zinder, which saw three churches ransacked and the French cultural centre burned down.
Thousands of Muslims demonstrated across the world on Friday, venting fury over the new Prophet Mohammed cartoon that Charlie Hebdo published in the wake of Islamist attacks on its offices and elsewhere in Paris last week.
Many Muslims see any depiction of Islam’s prophet as offensive, while many Western governments support Charlie Hebdo’s position that publishing the cartoons is an exercise in freedom of expression.
French President Francois Hollande on Saturday stressed that the country had “principles, values, notably freedom of expression”.
The satirical weekly has repeatedly published cartoons of Mohammed over the years and its latest issue, released on Wednesday, features a cartoon of Mohammed on its cover holding a “Je Suis Charlie” (I am Charlie) sign under the headline “All is forgiven”.
It came a week after attacks by three Islamists on its offices, a kosher supermarket and a policewoman left 17 people dead in and around Paris over three days, in raids that deeply shocked the country and sparked an outpouring of international support.

Politics / Obasanjo Dumps PDP Candidate, Declares Support For Amosun by okiezman(m): 11:07am On Jan 17, 2015
Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Friday openly declared his support for the re-election of the state governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
Also on the same day, constitutional lawyer and human rights advocate, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, was not qualified to contest the February 14 presidential election.

The former president explained that in spite of being in a different political party with the governor, his choice of Amosun was based on merit and not that of any political party.

In a swift reaction to the support for Amosun, the Ogun State Chapter of the party called on its National Working Committee to sanction Obasanjo for anti-party activities.

Obasanjo who spoke in his Abeokuta Hiltop residence while receiving Igbo leaders from Ogun and Lagos States declared his intention to vote for the return of Amosun in next month general election despite being in the PDP.

Obasanjo said: “In 2011, we were not together; though we were together before and I campaigned against him. But, see what he has been able to do in the last three and half years in the state. I cannot sacrifice performance for party.”

Obasanjo subsequently sought the support of the South-east indigenes residents in Ogun State for Amosun in the February 28 governorship election.
Obasanjo added: "I never dream of having a bridge on dry land in Ogun State in my life time. Yes, we have Ogun River, where there is a bridge, but, on a dry land. Go to Ijebu, Sagamu and Ota. I am seeing bridges, not even one or two.

“This is a development that some of us in our 60s, 70s even 50s would have thought would be a mirage during our life time. Apart from this, it will bring development that future governments shall be major beneficiaries.

"So, my people, I am not talking about other elections. I have come to tell you that in order to appreciate what this personality has been able to do in the last three and half years, let us give him our votes."

Obasanjo however emphasized that if the situation changes, after the governor must have been re-elected, he should be held responsible.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State PDP in a statement said: “We think the appropriate organs of the party (NWC) will have the courage to sanction him (Obasanjo) for anti-party activities.

“We in the Ogun State PDP are not surprised at his latest action but it really does not amount to much. For us, it means the beginning of APC's failure. What did his endorsement of Tunji Olurin translate into in 2011 elections?

Ozekhome: Buhari is not qualified to contest…
Ozekhome, who spoke on Africa Independent Television (AIT) Kakaaki programme, on General Buhari’s raging certificate saga, stated that the APC presidential candidate did not comply with the provisions of the electoral law in filling the nomination form he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

According to him, “I know that Nigerians would be curious about why this matter is just coming up for the first time and that after all, this man had contested the last three Presidential elections.

“Well, I wish to state that I have done, by God’s grace, a lot of election petition matters and I know that up till 2011, INEC form simply provides that candidates should state their qualifications. In other words, just say that I have O’Level; I have B.Sc; I have BL etc; then, you go and sit down.

“But right now, the rule has changed. Form CF001, says apart from filling your qualifications, you must attach them; you must attach photocopies of your qualifications; and, to attach means to bind; it means to glue-to. As we are looking at your form that you have filled, I have to see your NYSC certificate, all your qualifications /certificates must be attached to your form.

“So, if you do not attach them, you have not satisfied the minimum requirements; it is therefore not proper to refer INEC to go on a wild goose chase, go and look elsewhere for my qualifications.”

Ozekhome said that General Buhari’s decision to refer INEC to the Secretary of the Military Board for his credentials was like an applicant referring the interviewer to the last place he or she worked.

According to him, “It is like, as an applicant, you want a job, you come before your interviewers; your interviewers say, we have looked at the form you filled for this job; we have not  seen your certificates; and you say, the last place I worked, they have photocopy of my certificates, go and ask them.

“That is wrong. The military board we are talking about will also be in possession of the document of the respected general.

But, before he submitted the documents to the military board, it is taken that he had possession of his own documents; all he needs to do is to attach the photocopy of his document to his form; and, if there is any question to be asked, you can refer to the places where you went to  school; mind you, not the military board.”

Ozekhome said that section 131 of the constitution is very clear that the candidate must have not below school certificate level, or its equivalent, and its equivalent means GCE, WASC, NECO, etc; those are its equivalents.

“Now, if you do not have any of these qualifications, what you will do is to apply to WAEC or NECO, and say my certificates are lost, burnt or stolen by armed robbers; I will want you to issue me a letter certifying that I have this qualification.

“That was what happened in the case of the Vice-President, Muhammadu Sambo, because I have been following this case very seriously, because it is very crucial to our democratic norms and values. I am interested in how we can expand the space, deepen and widen the aptitude of democracy.”
