Politics / 6,000 Wamakko Kinsmen Dump Sokoto APC For PDP by okiezman(m): 9:41pm On Feb 05, 2015
An estimated 6,000 members of the All Progressives Congress in Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Thursday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.
TheNews Agency of Nigeriareports that the defectors were received in Wamakko by Alhaji Ibrahim Milgoma, Chairman of PDP in Sokoto State.
Governor Aliyu Wamakko is from the local government.
The spokesman for the defectors, Alhaji Abubakar Gedawa, said they joined the PDP to get justice and equity.
“We defected to the PDP from APC to ensure the success of the PDP at all levels in the upcoming general elections,” Gedawa said.
The governorship candidate of the PDP in the state, Senator Abdallah Wali, promised that he would ensure justice and equity in the state if elected.
A former governor of the state, Attahiru Bafarawa, called on the people of the area to vote massively for the PDP during the polls.
“I did my best to develop the local government when I was the governor of the state and Wali will continue from where I stopped, if elected as governor,” he said.
On his part, Milgoma said the leadership of the party would do its best to ensure that the APC-led state government was voted out of office on February 14.
“The PDP will sweep the forthcoming elections in the state and across Nigeria,” Milgoma, said.

Politics / Council Of State Rejects Election Postponement by okiezman(m): 7:34pm On Feb 05, 2015
The Council of State on Thursday rose from a seven-hour meeting, advising the Independent National Electoral Commission to go ahead and perform its constitutional responsibility of conducting the 2015 elections.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State told State House correspondents that INEC told the council that it was ready for the conduct of the election.

He said security chiefs also expressed their readiness but raised issues about some local governments currently under the control of the Boko Haram sect.

The implication, he said, is that elections will not hold in the affected areas.

But Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State claimed that the council advised INEC to consider all the inputs made during the meeting with a view to taking a decision it will announce to Nigerians later.

Foreign Affairs / Boko Haram Invades Northern Cameroon, Kills 90 Civilians by okiezman(m): 3:46pm On Feb 05, 2015
Cameroon’s Information Minister, Issa Bakari, has said no fewer than 800 Boko Haram fighters have attacked Fotokol in the north of the country, where 90 civilians have been killed.

Bakari also said on Thursday that the extremists, which started their attack on Wednesday from Gamboru area of Nigeria, burned churches, mosques and villages and slaughtered youth, who resisted joining them to fight the Cameroonian forces.

YAOUNDE, Cameroon — Boko Haram fighters have shot or burned to death about 90 civilians and wounded 500 in ongoing fighting in a Cameroonian border town near Nigeria, officials in Cameroon said Thursday.

Some 800 Islamic extremists attacking the town of Fotokol have ‘‘burned churches, mosques and villages and slaughtered youth who resisted joining them to fight Cameroonian forces,’’ Information Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakari said.
The insurgents from Nigeria also looted livestock and food in the fighting that began Wednesday and was continuing Thursday, Bakari told The Associated Press.

Boko Haram is using civilians as shields, making it difficult to confront them although reinforcements have arrived in Fotokol, according to military spokesman Col. Didier Badjeck.

Schools also have been razed by the insurgents, whose nickname, Boko Haram, means ‘‘Western education is forbidden’’ in the Hausa language.

Hundreds of insurgents were killed Wednesday compared to the loss of 13 Chadian and 6 Cameroonian troops, Defense Minister Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo said. At least 91 civilians have been killed and most of more than 500 wounded people cannot be immediately taken to the hospitals, he said. There was no way to immediately confirm the account independently.

The fighters are believed to have crossed into Cameroon from nearby Gamboru, a Nigerian border town that had been an extremist stronghold since November. Gamboru was retaken earlier this week and the fighters driven out by Chadian and Nigerian air strikes supported by Chadian ground troops.

African Union officials on Thursday were finalizing plans for a multinational force to fight the spreading Boko Haram uprising, although there are questions about funding. The AU last week authorized a 7,500-strong force from Nigeria and its four neighbors, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Benin.

Senior officers from the U.N. peacekeeping department are attending the meeting in Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, said a U.N. official.

The Africans want U.N. Security Council approval and money to fund the mission, said the official who spoke Wednesday at the United Nations and insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press on the meeting.

France’s President Francois Hollande said Thursday his country is providing support with weapons, logistics and operations for the multinational effort. At a news conference in Paris, he stopped short of saying whether France is actually involved in military action itself. France has a big air base at N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, which will lead the multinational force.

International concern has grown as Boko Haram has increased the tempo and ferocity of its attacks just as Nigeria is preparing for presidential and legislative elections on Feb. 14.

Some 10,000 people were killed in Boko Haram violence last year compared to 2,000 in the first four years of Nigeria’s Islamic uprising, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

Politics / Plot For Postponement Of 2015 Elections Thickens As Jega Cancels Media Briefing by okiezman(m): 8:40am On Feb 05, 2015
As preparations for the general elections gather momentum, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega, Wednesday cancelled the much awaited media briefing on the readiness of INEC for the big task.
It was not clear why the INEC boss cancelled the event, which was to take place in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The Council of State is expected to deliberate on election matters on Thursday.

Jega was expected to clear the air on reports about the possible postponement of the elections, eventhough he has repeatedly insisted the elections would go on as scheduled.

According the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, Jega has been under intense pressure to shift the polls and his chat with the media would have laid that speculation to rest.

INEC has faced logistics challenges, one of which is the poor distribution of  Permanent Voter’s Cards.

This challenge has led INEC to extend the deadline for PVC collection to Sunday, 8 February, 2015.

The distribution of the cards to be used to vote in the 2015 general elections which will begin on 14 February was earlier scheduled to end last Saturday.

According to INEC, the extension was intended to give registered voters yet to collect their PVCs the opportunity to do so in readiness for the February 2015 general elections.

“INEC hereby calls on duly registered persons not to delay in going to collect their cards before the expiration of the new deadline.

“The Commission reaffirms its determination to make the 2015 elections free, fair, credible and peaceful; and urges all stakeholders, including voters, to spare no effort in working towards the same objective,” Kayode Idowu, INEC’s spokesman said.

Another troubling dimension to the preparations of INEC is the report that contract has just been awarded for the printing of ballot papers for the presidential election on 14 February, a time considered too short for the papers to be delivered to INEC and to be distributed nationwide.

INEC is also expected to train over 900,000 ad hoc staff for the elections.

Politics / 16 Political Parties Endorse Shift In Election Date by okiezman(m): 10:04pm On Feb 03, 2015
Threaten to boycott polls

Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja

Sixteen out of the twenty six registered political parties on Tuesday endorsed calls for the postponement of the general election slated for the February 14 and 28.

Also five out of  the 14 presidential candidates on Tuesday signed a statement urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  to postpone the elections to a more appropriate date.

The parties are United Democratic Party (UDP), Citizen Peoples Party (CPP), Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN), Action Alliance (AA), Peoples Democratic Congress (PDC) (ACPN), Labour Party (LP), (MPPP), United Party of Nigeria (UPN), Alliance for Democracy (AD), (ADC), (ACD) Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) and Independent Democrat (ID).

The five presidential candidates who endorsed the postponement were Godson Okoye (UDP), Chief Sam Okoye (CPP), Prince C.O Allagoe (PPN), Tunde Anifowose (AA) and Ganiu Galadima (ACPN).

The 16 political parties in a resolution calling for the postponement, said, "Fellow Nigerians, we the concerned leaders of political parties, run up to the 2015 February General Elections, have observed some dangerous trends, which if not checked may negatively and adversely affect our democracy".

The parties hinged their argument for the postponement on security, distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and people deserting their residence for their villages.

They  also threatened to boycott the elections if the opinions were not respected.

The leaders of the 16 parties  called on Federal government to take necessary steps to provide adequate security for Nigerians to go out and collect their PVCs in order to be able to exercise their civic and constitutional duty.

Politics / Nigeria Safe Under Jonathan, Says IBB by okiezman(m): 9:30pm On Feb 03, 2015
Former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), on Tuesday at his Minna, Niger State Hilltop residence, said with President Goodluck Jonathan piloting the affairs of the nation, the nation is in safe hands.

The former military president spoke when Jonathan who was in the state capital for his re-election campaign paid him homage.

Babangida thanked Jonathan sincerely for finding time to pay him a visit despite his busy schedule.

He said he shared the same passion with Jonathan, a passion which he said was the genuine zeal to transform Nigeria.

Babangida told Jonathan: "I felt touched when you visited me in Germany after nine hours of surgery and you came again‎.

"You have made a very good decision to visit Minna during your presidential campaign because Minna is known for producing presidents, beginning from your namesake President Azikiwe, who was born in Zungeru.

"And since then most of the president's of Nigeria have one thing or the other, they come here to ask for blessing and I will offer this blessing to you Mr. President.

"When we were doing nocturnal activities for the PDP, this house has held meetings. My family and I are proud of this. I commend the party for being very strong,

"I see in PDP an organisation devoid of religion. You have shown leadership; even when others are breaking up, you have remained strong.

"Jonathan and I share a common passion which is Nigeria remains strong, united and indivisible. I wish you well. Nigeria under Jonathan is in safe hands."

Earlier, Jonathan said he was pleased each time he went to see Babangida, saying ‎"You have taken me as a son since my days as deputy governor. You have been a pillar and support me.

"I have come to present myself and Sambo, You are a leader of our party, you are a stabilising factor of our country and party and have been encouraging the young ones to grow.”

There was pandemonium on Thursday at the Ibrahim Babangida Square, Venue of the Peoples Democratic Party presidential campaign rally in Bauchi as angry youths pelted dignitaries at the event with dangerous objects like hammer, stones and slippers among other things.

The youths, whose source of grievances could not be immediately ascertained, destroyed some of the canopies and plastic chairs.

The ‘supporters’, who had, before the arrival of President Goodluck Jonathan and his entourage, chanted solidarity songs for the President and the PDP and marched round the venue with their drums and placards with the President’s picture, became unruly during the programme and began pelting dignitaries on the stand.

Security operatives had a tough time dispersing the restless supporters, who had stormed the square in large in large number.

A similar incident occurred on Monday when Governor Isa Yuguda and other dignitaries were stoned at the PDP governorship campaign rally at the Darazo mini-stadium by angry youths believed to be supporters of the opposition All Progressives Congress.

The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, was pelted with bottled and sachet water while he was making his speech and pleading with the people of the state to vote for and support Jonathan and the PDP during next month’s general elections.

Other dignitaries, who were on the stand with the FCT minister while he was making his speech, were also stoned. Others bent down to avoid being hit by any of the missiles.

The minister paused for some seconds to wipe off water from his face.

Mohammed called on the President and other dignitaries to ignore the ugly turn of events, alleging that it was the handwork of the opposition.

“Fellow supporters of PDP, lets ignore what is happening. This is politics. It is the handwork of those who are bent on destroying politics in Nigeria,” he added.

When he shouted, “Nigeria”, the crowd shouted back “sai Buhari”, “sai Baba Buhari”, others chanted “Bama yi,” “Bama yi”, meaning we don’t support PDP.

All throughout the rally, which was very brief, youths chanted their support for the opposition APC presidential candidate, Maj. Gen Muhammad Buhari, saying “Nigeria, sai Buhari.”

Politics / Don’t Vote For APC, Falae Warns Ondo Voters by okiezman(m): 9:22pm On Jan 21, 2015
The National Chairman of Social Democratic Party and Afenifere chieftain, Chief Olu Falae, has asked voters in Ondo State not to vote for the All Progressives Congress candidates in the next month’s general elections.

Falae, who spoke at his party’s campaign rally in Akure on Wednesday, officially presented SDP’s candidates for the National and House of Assembly elections.

The SDP chairman  said the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had done a lot of things against the Yoruba Nation and the South West.

According to him,  Tinubu and his party worked against the interest of the South West when the position of the Speakership of the House of Representatives was zoned to the region.

Falae also alleged that the position of the APC leader on the much publicised National Confab was condemnable.

He pointed out that if many of the recommendations of the confab like decentralisation of railways control, seaport establishment and control of mineral resources were implemented, the South West and Ondo State in particular would derive a lot of benefits.

“A lot of employment would be generated if those recommendations in the  report of the national conference are implemented.” Falae said.

He advised the people of the state to vote for all the SDP candidates for the National and State House of Assembly Elections.

Also speaking, the SDP governorship candidate for Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde, said the South West benefitted immensely when the region was not being controlled by the political party at the centre.

Makinde recalled the achievements of leaders of the Yorubaland in the First, Second and Third Republics who did so much for the people in spite of being in the party different from that at the centre.

He said, “The south west region has nothing to lose if they vote for SDP in the forthcoming elections.”

The highpoint of the rally was the presentation of party flags to candidates vying for places in the National Assembly and House of Assembly in the coming elections.

Politics / PDP Blames APC For Attack On Jonathan In Katsina by okiezman(m): 6:09pm On Jan 21, 2015
http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/175381-pdp-blames-apc-attack-jonathan-katsina.html

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has condemned Tuesday’s attack on President Goodluck Jonathan by supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Wednesday said the attack is “a clear indication that the APC is not ready to dial back on its rabid desire to attain power through violence despite signing a peace pact a week ago in Abuja”, adding that the PDP would “no longer tolerate such acts of violence on any of its members”.
“This brazen attack on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and our presidential candidate clearly shows that the APC was never committed to the spirit and letters of the Abuja peace accord which they signed in the presence of prominent Nigerians and international personalities.
“It is unfortunate that while the PDP and other parties are busy ensuring that their members and supporters remain committed to a peaceful electioneering, the APC has been hatching plots to unleash violence on our candidates and members.
“We invite Nigerians, friends of Nigeria and all lovers of democracy to rise in condemnation of this dangerous phenomenon. These early developments clearly demonstrate that the comments and declarations by the leaders of the APC that Nigeria would be thrown into chaos and bloodshed should it lose the February general elections were real.
“We commend the maturity and the ever peaceful disposition of President Jonathan and the leaders of the PDP even in the face of this unwarranted attack”, the statement said.
According to the PDP, “the irony which we wish to place on record is that the APC which has successfully completed its campaigns in the South South, including Bayelsa, the home state of President Jonathan without any incident and has even signed a pact to maintain peace, is turning round to unleash thugs to disrupt the presidential campaign of our great party.
“In spite, we wish to assure Nigerians of the iron cast resolve of the PDP to ensure peaceful and credible general elections where the votes of the people shall exclusively determine who emerge as leaders in the general elections.”

Politics / Top Five Political Campaigns In Nigeria by okiezman(m): 4:55pm On Jan 20, 2015
The election fever is here again and with the (s)election of various party candidates at different levels, the campaigns have gone into top gear anytime.
Let’s take a peep down memory lane into some of the best or most engaging political campaigns we’ve seen (or read about) in Nigeria since the 1950’s.
1. Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, SDP 1993
That year’s election is still regarded in many quarters as perhaps the freest and fairest election Nigeria has ever had. Chief Abiola campaigned on the slogan Hope ’93 and smarting from the Structural Adjustment Policy, SAP, of the Babangida regime that had sapped many Nigerians economically, Chief Abiola’s message rang a bell especially with that memorable jingle. The result was a resounding vote for the Social Democratic Party candidate.
2. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, PDP 2011
GEJ’s presidential campaign in 2011 was a big hit. Promising a breath of fresh air, he played the role of the underdog to a hilt especially with that famous line “I had no shoes”. His message resonated with the Nigerian masses as they lapped up to him. He gave many hope that ordinary people could rise to the top in Nigeria, he became the poster boy for the new Nigerian dream and despite some irregularities in the elections, he won. The rest as they say is history.
3. Peter Ayodele Fayose, 2014
Impeached in 2006 on charges of corruption, Governor Fayose was back in power in 2014, defeating the cerebral Kayode Fayemi in the process. Although his campaign didn’t have any clearly defined message, Fayose endeared himself to the electorates with a good mix of populist tokenism (or stomach infrastructure as he called it) and street smart. While his opponents hit it big on social media, Fayose ate pounded yam and drank palmwine with the ‘real’ voters and for all his troubles, he beat the incumbent in all the 16 local government areas of the state.
4. Babatunde Raji Fashola, ACN 2011
In 2010, BRF as he’s popularly known was contesting to be re-elected as governor of Lagos, Nigeria’s economic nerve center and on the basis of his performance in his first term, his candidature was quite popular with the electorates. However, the SAN with a sound mind gave nothing to chance as he went all out, campaigning on the platform of continuity…’BRF is working’ his posters screamed. The result was a landslide victory at the polls, leaving the People’s Democratic Party candidate far behind in a cloud of dust.
5. Obafemi Jeremiah Oyeniyi Awolowo, AG 1959
Chief Awolowo’s Action Group was at the time regarded to have been the best organised political party in Nigeria with a clearly defined ideology and manifesto and he ran an equally efficient campaign in that year’s elections. Awo traversed the length and breadth of the nation in helicopters, reaching out to the commoners with a promise of improved welfare, free education and health as espoused by his political party. Although Awo’s party couldn’t secure enough votes beyond the western region to have enabled him become Nigeria’s first prime minister, his campaign was undoubtedly innovative and far ahead of its time. Some other time, some other clime perhaps history would have been different.

Politics / I Have Confidence In Jega, Says Jonathan by okiezman(m): 8:51pm On Jan 19, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said he had explicit confidence in the ability of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to be an unbiased umpire in the February general elections.

Jonathan spoke during the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential rally held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

He said the fact that Jega is an indigene of the state also showed the confidence he has in the state.

He said, “We appreciate the people of Kebbi State so much. We have confidence in you and that is why we are talking about elections.

“We selected a son of Kebbi State, Prof. Jega, to be the number one umpire in this country.

“It is because of the confidence we have in him to be an unbiased umpire.”

The President promised that his government would continue to support the state government to improve the welfare of the people.

He commended the state government for being part of the rice revolution in the country introduced by his administration.

Jonathan said with the slump in global crude oil price and the recent reduction in pump price of petrol, there was the need for the country to strengthen alternative sources of income for the country.

Agriculture, he said, remained key among the alternative sources.

The President told the gathering of party faithful that his administration established a federal university in the state because of the importance he attaches to education.

He restated his administration’s resolve that every Nigerian child must be educated.

If given another opportunity, Jonathan said his administration would achieve a lot more within a few years.

Vice President Namadi Sambo, in his remarks, observed that Jonathan is the first President in Nigeria that has a doctorate degree.

He said with him as an architect, they have both been working and building Nigeria to world standard.

He enumerated the government’s giant strides to include sectors such as education, infrastructure and transportation among others.

The President had earlier paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Iliyasu Bashar, where he sought royal blessing for his ambition.

He told the traditional ruler that he was in the palace and in Birni Kebbi to formally inform the people of the state of his desire to seek re-election.

He lauded the state government for keying into his administration’s agricultural transformation agenda.

He promised that the Federal Government would continue to partner with the state government to see that the various developmental programmes are fruitful.

The emir promised the President that traditional rulers in the state shall continue to be loyal to all constituted authorities and remain committed to peace in the country.
