Politics / Lamido: Obasanjo Is An Icon, Angry With His Political Children by okiezman(m): 9:44am On Feb 18, 2015 |
http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/lamido-obasanjo-is-an-icon-angry-with-his-political-children/202103/ Says PDP will defeat APCJaiyeola Andrews in Abuja
Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, on Tuesday described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an icon.He said the former president was angry with his political children, culminating in his public tearing of his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) membership card.Lamido spoke when he fielded questions from State House correspondents, shortly after he met with President Gooluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa. On the exit of Obasanjo from PDP, the governor said: “Baba is more than a party man. He is an icon, a national symbol, leader and an inventor, a creator of all the institutions in Nigeria from the presidency to the governorswho are his own sons and his creations.“And so, when a father is angry with his own children, we will only say we are sorry to him. But then we cannot be renounced for whatever it is. If you do any political DNA of our blood, you will find his blood in us. No matter what we are, we may not be able to live up to his expectations.“We might have made some mistakes, but abandoning us is not the solutionbecause the country is first before anything else. So, he is our ‘baba’ even up to the president. ‘Obasanjo is our ‘baba’ no matter what. He is angry with us, but then, what do we do? He gave us the life at a time when Nigerians were fighting us, he stood for us.”Lamido noted that since 2007 to 2011, Obasanjo stood firm for the PDP. He added that: “He is our father. And so, if we made some mistakes, we are only human because we are heading human institutions. And I think by the time he reflects, how could he abandon his own children like that. Wherever we are, we are right in his heart. He feels for us, he cares for us.”On whether they will go back to the former president for reconciliation, Lamido noted: “When there is some kind of misunderstanding between a father and a child, you don’t go to National Television Authority (NTA) or any other media to say you are going to do this. I mean the bond between us is so strong.“I know he is equally pained. I know what he is going through because he isour father, but I will not tell you the strategy because when he was producing us, you were not there, when he was making us, were you there?”On claims by some PDP leaders that they would not miss Obasanjo, Lamido stressed that “but then, the first child is the president, did he say so?”Asked if worried by Obasanjo’s consistent criticisms of Jonathan, the governor said: “What I am saying is that all of us are parents. When we were born, they pet us, gave us their love, gave us everything. By the time they get old, naturally, there is what they call role reversal. We became the parents and they became the children. So, what is wrong if our parents begin to manifest those signs of old age?”On the opposition party watching PDP’s crisis, Lamido reacted by saying“What is this opposition in Nigeria? You must know Nigerian history. Nigeria cannot be governed by an aggregate of pain, anger and frustration. And I have been saying those called opposition who are now abusing us, whatever might have been our crime, it was that crime that made them.“We created that for them to become either governors, legislators, we created room for them to emerge. So whatever they think is our evil, they are the manifestations of the evil. Believe me, you don’t know Nigeria.”Asked if PDP can still win the election, he said “I don’t doubt it because what is APC? An amalgamation of pain, anger and desperation. And this country is too big for them.”On the lintel level theory in Jigawa, the governor added that, “People can coin anything they like. If you go through the social media, what they paint is that APC has won in almost 99 per cent of Nigeria! For what” |

Politics / Jega Being Forced To Announce 6-week Postponement, But President Want Him Sacked by okiezman(m): 4:56pm On Feb 07, 2015 |
http://saharareporters.com/2015/02/07/jega-being-forced-announce-six-week-postponement-president-jonathan-wants-him-sacked SOURCE: READ MORE: #NIGERIADECIDES , CORRUPTION , MILITARY , POLITICS , BREAKING NEWS, NEWS YOU MAY ALSO LIKE READ NEXT ttahiru Jega, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is close to bowing to fierce pressure by announcing a six- week postponement of the February general elections. However, even though Mr. Jega is all but certain to do the bidding of President Goodluck Jonathan by setting a latter date for the elections, our sources in the Presidency insist that Mr. Jega will not survive as INEC chair much longer if plans by the Presidency to sack him materialize. SaharaReporters has consistently reported that President Jonathan and his closest associates have been desperate to postpone the elections to enable them to re-strategize in the face of certain signs that Mr. Jonathan and his party were on the cusp of losing by a wide margin. Once Mr. Jega makes it official that the elections will be postponed, Mr. Jonathan and members of his close- knit kitchen cabinet plan to intensify their plot to plant an interim government after successfully removing Mr. Jega as INEC chairman. Mr. Jega’s tenure is scheduled to end in June 2015. Our sources reveal that the president and his team are exploring several options to ease Mr. Jega out of his INEC job. One option, according to a source embedded in the Presidency, is to ask the INEC chair to go on “termination leave” as early as the end of March, 2015. A second and more potent strategy is to launch a series of subterranean threats to his life and a series blackmail strategies, including the use of sections of the Nigerian media to accuse Mr. Jega of corruption in the award of INEC contracts. SaharaReporters learnt that the heads of Nigeria’s security agencies, under direct instructions from the Presidency, categorically told Mr. Jega yesterday that they could not guarantee establishing a climate for free and fair elections to hold in February. They also reportedly warned Mr. Jega that they could not guarantee his personal safety and those of other INEC staff should elections go ahead on February 14th as currently scheduled. The alarming pressure on Mr. Jega forced him to call a meeting of political parties, non-governmental organizations and resident electoral commissioners in Abuja today. Although the meetings are yet to end, Mr. Jega has confided in several people that he was open to considering a six-week postponement. One of our sources said President Jonathan’s aides had bribed several briefcase political parties to go to INEC to demand a postponement of the elections. The real agenda of President Jonathan’s inner circle is two-fold, according to information obtained from sources in the Presidency. The first is a desperate desire to get tenure extension at all cost through the backdoor. The second is to buy enough time to prepare the army to help rig the elections in favor of Mr. Jonathan should the incumbent president and the PDP continue to face bleak prospects in the polls. Two sources at the Presidency disclosed that Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke was particularly rattled at the prospect of Mr. Jonathan’s defeat. Ms. Alison- Madueke, who has engineered several shady deals in the oil sector that enabled her, Mr. Jonathan and a few cronies to pocket billions of dollars, is described of deeply scared of exposure and possible jail time should Mr. Jonathan lose the elections. The sources said the Petroleum Minister had persuaded Mr. Jonathan to sign off on her series of corrupt deals in the oil sector by arguing that the billions of dollars she was stealing would be used to guarantee re- election for the president. The minister used several fronts, including Jide Omokri, Kola Aluko, and Toye Cole in a series of questionable deals. One of her fronts, Mr. Aluko, who was also the minister’s lover, reportedly ran away with more than $2 billion dollars after a jealous Ms. Alison-Maduekebegan to hound him for dating former supermodel Naomi Campbell. A source close to the Presidency also disclosed that Mr. Jonathan had struck a multibillion-dollar deal with Chadian President Idris Deby to outsource the fight against Boko Harm to Chad. With Chad now fighting Boko Haram on Nigerian territory, President Jonathan and his backers within the military would have enough troops to deploy to help rig the elections, said the source. The president has already deployed soldiers massively into Lagos today to forestall any peaceful protests against the postponement of elections. |

Politics / We’ll Revenge Attack On Ndigbo In North –ohanaeze by okiezman(m): 11:37am On Feb 07, 2015 |
As tension heightens in the country ahead of next weekend’s presidential election, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has warned that it would revenge any attack on Ndigbo in the North. President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Gary Igariwe, issued the warning at a press conference in Enugu on Friday. Igariwe said he has given a directive to Igbo in the North to prepare to defend themselves in event of any attack on them during the election. He said Ndigbo would no longer fold their arms and allow themselves to be attacked on the slightest provocation. “Either way the election goes, whether Jonathan or Buhari wins, there will be trouble in Nigeria. And you know that the people who always bear the brunt are the Igbo. “But I have told Igbo in the North to stay where they are and prepare to defend themselves. It is no longer if somebody slaps you in one cheek you turn the other cheek. I told them that if anybody attacks them, they should also engage in reprisal attack,” Igariwe said. He said Ohanaeze endorsed Jonathan earlier in the week as part of efforts to build bridges between the South-East and South South, which they started in 2011 by supporting Jonathan as an incumbent. “Secondly, he is from the minority. South-East and South are the people who have not produced president for this country. Jonathan is a minority from the South-South and we looked at the fact that they are the people producing the oil, which we use to run this country. They should be allowed two terms. “Again, we believe two terms is not enough to achieve those things that could bring peace and stability to the country,” Igariwe said. He also dismissed the insinuations in the media that it was a faction of Ohaneze Ndigbo that endorsed Jonathan, even as he accused Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, of sponsoring crisis in Ohanaeze Ndigbo. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/02/well-revenge-attack-ndigbo-north-ohanaeze/ |

Politics / Nigeria, Chad Sign Mou On Anti-boko Haram War by okiezman(m): 5:32pm On Feb 06, 2015 |
www.punchng.com/news/nigeria-chad-deploy-7500-troops-against-boko-haram/ The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, has put the total number of troops involved in the joint operations between federal troops and the Chadian forces at 7,500 soldiers. The CDS said the military had deployed 5,000 soldiers to work with a total of between 2,000 to 2,500 forces in the coordinated action against the Boko Haram. Badeh said this while speaking with journalists at the end of a meeting between the leadership of the nation’s defence sector and the Chief of Defence Staff of Chad, Maj. Gen. Brahim Mahammat, and other top officers from Chad in Abuja on Friday. He added that the 5,000 soldiers deployed specifically to work with the Chadians were in addition to all Nigerian forces available to fight the insurgents. The CDS said the Chadian troops had commenced operation from Gamboru Ngala while Nigerian troops were operating from the South with an arrangement to meet somewhere at the centre. Badeh and his Chadian counterpart signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the ongoing allied operation against the Boko Haram after six hours of a closed-door meeting of senior military and security personnel from the two countries. But the Defence Chief refused to disclose the details in the MoU for security reasons. Badeh said the Chadian military delegation was in Abuja to clarify some grey areas involving the operation which were sorted out during the six-hour meeting. The CDS, who was silent on the number of troops being contributed by the Cameroonian to the joint operation, also declined to speak on the casualty figure suffered by the Cameroonians in the Boko Haram attack on Fotokol, on Wednesday. He said, “I want you to know that Chadian Forces in Nigerian territory are mostly in the border town of Fotokol and Gamboru Ngala on the basis of the bilateral agreement we signed with them. “We have been working together since. They came here now to clear some grey areas; that is what we have done. We have just met as an addendum to the MoU that we signed on the January 18. “I do not want to comment on how many Cameronian soldiers that were killed on that side; let them comment on it themselves. But I know that Chad is bringing a force of about 2,000 to 2,500. Nigeria is taking all her forces; but specifically to work with the Chadian Forces, we have 5,000 to work with them and that is what we have there. “The contribution from Cameroun, I am not very sure of that for now. The Nigerien Forces, the MOU we have with Niger, they are on their own side so that the Boko Haram or the enemies won’t have the opportunity to run into Niger to go and cause havoc there.” Badeh said the meeting with the Chadian Defence forces should have come up earlier especially with the urgent need to solve the problem of insurgency as the nation moves into elections. |
