PEOPLE who have upbeat outlooks on life have significantly better cardiovascular health, suggests a new study that examined associations between optimism and heart health in more than 5,100 adults. “Individuals with the highest levels of optimism have twice the odds of being in ideal cardiovascular health compared to their more pessimistic counterparts,” said lead author Rosalba Hernandez, a professor of social work at the University of Illinois. “This association remains significant, even after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics and poor mental health.” Participants’ cardiovascular health was assessed using blood pressure, body mass index, fasting plasma glucose and serum cholesterol levels, dietary intake, physical activity and tobacco use. They ranged in age from 45-84, and completed surveys that assessed their mental health, levels of optimism, and physical health, based upon self-reported extant medical diagnoses of arthritis, liver and kidney disease. Individuals’ total health scores increased in tandem with their levels of optimism. People who were the most optimistic were 50 and 76 percent more likely to have total health scores in the intermediate or ideal ranges, respectively. They were twice as likely to have ideal cardiovascular health, and 55 percent more likely to have a total health score in the intermediate range. Optimists had significantly better blood sugar and total cholesterol levels than their counterparts, were more physically active, had healthier body mass indexes and were less likely to smoke, according to a paper on the research in the January/February 2015 issue of Health Behaviour and Policy Review. Know what signs to look for when friendship suddenly turns into more. You've been friends all for a long time. You tell each other everything, even who you're datingand how it's going. Then suddenly it happnens. The change-over occurs...without you even realizing it. Suddenly this comfortable, easy-going friendship takes on a new form and becomes a burgeoning romantic relationship. It's more cuddly, it's more endearing. Next thing you know, the two of you are a full-blown couple. Here are four signs that you and your guy friend, your bud, your bro, have transformed into a hot romantic duo. 1) Your friends start making very obvious comments. All of a sudden every time you go out with a group of friends (and you and your guy pal are there) comments slip out about how cute the two of you would look as a couple, how into each other you two are, and how compatible your personalities are. Often your friends may see theromance spark before you do! 2) You find yourself making or receiving a daily call, often right before bedtime. Out of nowhere, before you even noticed, the two of you started talking every day, at length, about nothing, and you're secretly loving it. What did you have for lunch...how was your day...what are you doing right now. You begin to look forward to these conversations with your guy "friend" and a day that goes by without a casual chat just doesn't seem right. 3) Unplanned, you find you have developed pet names for each other. It used to be a "Hey, Bro" kind of thing. Now, it's "Sweetie this" and "hey Babe" that. His texts now include the added "Sweetheart" and "Doll." You don't point it out and make things awkward. You just let your heart melt and start answering to this new litany of adorable pet names. 4) Pats on the back become arm and hand intertwinings. Whether it's watching the game on the big-screen TV or playing catch in the park what used to be high-fiving and patting on the back friend-style becomes a softer, gentler hand-holding, draping arms on shoulders, sitting on laps, and hugging kind-of thing which leads, inevitably, to that first little sweeter-than-Hershey's kiss on the forehead. When all these signs are there it's bound to happen. Source: http://.com.ng

The United States rolled out a sweeping set of measures on Thursday to ease the half-century-old embargo against Cuba, opening up the country to expanded travel, trade and financial activities, Voice of America reports. Defying hardline critics in Congress, President Barack Obama made good on a commitment he made a month ago to begin loosening some US economic sanctions against the communist-ruled island as part of an effort to end decades of hostility. The Treasury and Commerce Departments issued a package of new rules that will allow US exports of telecommunications, agricultural and construction equipment, permit expanded travel to Cuba and authorise some kinds of banking relations. President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, directed the Military High Command to identify those sabotaging the efforts of the Federal Government to crush the Boko Haram insurgents in the country and flush them out of the military. Jonathan’s directive followed series of security reports indicating the existence of fifth columnists in the armed forces especially with regards to the war against terrorists in the North-East. Speaking at the commissioning and unveiling of the new cenotaph at the Military Cemetery in Abuja, the President said: “It is the duty of the officers (prosecuting the war) to detect those who are not working at par and those who are not committed to the country. “Those who will betray others; a betrayal that may lead to the massive death of officers when they are in operation, such people should be removed from service early enough. “If we are able to filter among ourselves and we are able to identify such people, they may be deployed to other places. I am not advocating the retirement of people, except it becomes very clear that such an officer has committed an offence that requires this but soldiers must be trusted people. Army-Jonathan“Soldiers must not be betraying themselves and the country. If any soldier is suspected to have this kind of inclination, the best thing is to redeploy that person from the position so that he will not be an enemy to the state and his colleagues.” Addressing a gathering that included the Minister of Defence, General Aliyu Gusau; the NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki; CDS, Service Chiefs, IGP and PDP Chairman, Adamu Muazu, the President said: “Today is a unique day because we have formally unveiled the cenotaph with the names of the officers and men that were deployed to various operations and have paid the supreme sacrifice. I believe in most cases this may be the only link between them and the future generation, their children and their grand children. “It is a project that is dear to me, that is why I mentioned that we needed to have this memorial that will be in remembrance of our past heroes. Probably in future as nation, we may even have a bigger museum that photographs of some of our gallant officers will be displayed, so the future generation can always know what people had done, the various contributions they have made over the years. But for now this cenotaph will help. “And it is a clear testimony that the government would always remember those who served this country, especially the military and the paramilitary officers that have to be awake for us to sleep. They are in the sun, the bushes and all for us to live in peace.” Source: http://.com.ng/ |
RIGHTS groupAmnesty International (AI) is in possession of shocking satellite images of the January 3 killings in Baga and Doron Baga in Borno State by Boko Haram. AI yesterday claimed that over 3,700 structures were either damaged or completely destroyed. It explained that while 620 structures were razed in Baga, 3,100 others were affected in Doron Baga, which is also known as Doron Gowon It also said one of the two towns, which were under siege for four days, was almost wiped off by the militants. But a top military source last night said troops will soon reclaim Baga. The organisation in a statement by its Nigerian researcher Daniel Eyre, said: “The Satellite images released by Amnesty International on Wednesday provide indisputable and shocking evidence of the scale of last week’s attack on the towns of Baga and Doron Baga by Boko Haram militants. “Before and after images of two neighbouring towns, Baga (160 kilometres from Maiduguri) and Doron Baga (also known as Doro Gowon, 2.5 km from Baga), taken on 2 and 7 January show the devastating effect of the attacks which left over 3,700 structures damaged or completely destroyed. Other nearby towns and villages were also attacked over this period. “These detailed images show devastation of catastrophic proportions in two towns, one of which was almost wiped off the map in the space of four days. “Of all Boko Haram assaults analyzed by Amnesty International, this is the largest and most destructive yet. It represents a deliberate attack on civilians whose homes, clinics and schools are now burnt out ruins.” The AI gave the details of how the two towns were attacked by Boko Haram. It added: “The analysis shows just two of the many towns and villages that fell victim to a series of Boko Haram attacks which began on 3 January 2015. “In Baga, a densely populated town less than two square kilometres in size, approximately 620 structures were damaged or completely destroyed by fire. “In Doron Baga over 3,100 structures were damaged or destroyed by fire affecting most of the four square kilometre town. “Many of the wooden fishing boats along the shoreline, visible in the images taken on the 2 January, are no longer present in the 7 January images tallying with eye witnesses’ testimony that desperate residents fled by boat across Lake Chad. “Thousands of people have fled the violence across the border to Chad and to other parts of Nigeria including Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. “These people are adding to the hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people and refugees, who have already stretched the capacity of host communities and government authorities. Apart from appealing to Boko Haram to stop the killings, the AI also pleaded with Chad to protect Nigerians who have taken refuge in the country. It said: “Amnesty International is calling on the governments of Nigeria and Chad to ensure these displaced people are protected and provided with adequate humanitarian assistance. “The destruction shown in these images matches the horrific testimonies that Amnesty International has gathered. “Interviews with eyewitnesses as well as with local government officials and local human rights activists suggest that Boko Haram militants shot hundreds of civilians.” A man in his fifties told Amnesty International what happened in Baga during the attack: “They killed so many people. I saw maybe around 100 killed at that time in Baga. I ran to the bush. As we were running, they were shooting and killing.” He hid in the bush and was later discovered by Boko Haram fighters, who detained him in Doron Baga for four days. “Those who fled claimed seeing many more corpses in the bush. “I don’t know how many but there were bodies everywhere we looked,” one woman told Amnesty International. Another witness described how Boko Haram members were shooting indiscriminately, killing even small children and a woman who was in labour. “Half of the baby boy is out and she died like this,” he said. The AI claimed that after the attack on Baga, witnesses described how Boko Haram drove into the bush rounding up women, children and the elderly who had escaped. The statement reads: “According to one woman who was detained for four days ‘Boko Haram took around 300 women and kept us in a school in Baga. They released the older women, mothers and most of the children after four days but are still keeping the younger women.’ “Amnesty International is calling on Boko Haram to stop killing civilians. The deliberate killing of civilians and destruction of their property by Boko Haram are war crimes and crimes against humanity and must be duly investigated. “The government should take all possible legal steps to restore security in the Northeast and ensure protections of civilians. “Uptill now, the isolation of the Baga combined with the fact that Boko Haram remains in control of the area has meant that it has been very difficult to verify what happened there. Residents have not been able to return to bury the dead, let alone count their number. But through these satellite images combined with graphic testimonies, a picture of what is likely to be Boko Haram’s deadliest attack ever is becoming clearer,” said Daniel Eyre. A source in the military said: “Troops will soon reclaim Baga and Nigerians will be briefed on the correct situation. We stand by our position that about 150 people were killed including many insurgents.” Source: http://.com.ng |
The Minister for Trade, Industry and Investment, Olusegun Aganga has disclosed that the Federal Government plans to stop oil importation by 2018. He said the plan would save about $10 billion into the federation account. Aganga, who spoke during a facility tour of Mikano International Limited in Ikeja, Lagos, said Nigeria cannot continue to depend on importation of primary products that could be produced locally. He therefore expressed the readiness of his ministry to harness all resources and delve into sectors where the country has competitive advantage including the agro allied industry and petroleum sector. “There are many sectors we should have developed as a country but for decades we relied entirely on importing raw materials which is oil, that era has gone and that’s why the president launched the Industrial Revolution plan in 2012,” he said. The plan, according to the minister, had already started working in the automotive sector, the sugar subdivision, as well as the cotton and textile industry. He also disclosed that the steel and metal policy was underway to create a robust industrial sector for the country. He revealed that the Federal Government spends about $3 billion on the importation of steel, about $6 billion importing cars and spare parts and about $1 billion to import sugar, funds which could be put to better use if these products were sufficiently produced locally. He therefore advised Nigerians to allow the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration to complete his good work in the country. Aganga lauded Mikano for keying into the Industrial Revolution Plan to ensure that power is stabilised in the country. “Part of what Mikano produces today has a minimum of 40 percent local content and it is in the critical sector of power industry. I am encouraging them and they have been making plan to start the production of transformer which will seriously support the power sector,” he added. Aganga revealed that his ministry has identified 13 products that can replace oil in areas where Nigerians would have competitive advantage and that once the implementation of the revolution plan is completed it would diversify the economy in less than four years. The minister also noted that the current administration was committed to better rail transport, as he noted that it was the only means that fit into the industrial arrangement of any emerging nation. “Rail is the most critical transport that we need to continue to rely upon and for the first time in 25 years Nigeria now has train moving from Lagos to Kano and that was done under this administration, he stressed.” He said his ministry was attracting investment into the areas of transport, warehouses and logistics so as to create modern ways of moving goods around the country at a lower cost and reduce problem of multiple taxation in return. Also speaking during the tour, Chairman of Mikano, Mufeed Karameh said the unexpected visit of the minister could be a planned step by the government to encourage investors in the country. He said his company, which started operation with 10 percent local content has improved to 40 percent local content at the moment. Bishop Tom Samson made headlines last week after an Encomium Magazine report revealed that the General Overseer of Christ Royal Family International Church acquired a N80m stretched Hummer Limo. Bishop Tom Samson reportedly made the purchase from Top Limousine which is one of the best manufacturers of limousines in the world and that the limo was built to his specification. The report revealed that the 38 feet long Hummer Limo has some special features built in, such as: Double jet doors, 3 plasma TVs with smart touch control system and a 42 inch TV in the VIP section of the car, 28 leather passenger seats and some other state of the art gadgets inside. In a recent interview, the pastor however refuted the reports, revealing that he got 38 feet long Hummer Limo as a gift. He said it was a gift from one of his benefactors who he had helped in the past. "Confirming the issue of N80m Hummer limousine it was magnified beyond proportion! That a limo is worth N80m does not mean it is bought for N80m. Moreover, it was an individual abroad who saw that I like it and bankrolled it, not even a dime from me went into the purchase of the limo, and he did it in appreciation of the role I played in his life,” Bishop Tom Samson reportedly said about the wonder on wheels. He also added that all his cars are gifts from people he has impacted positively on in the past Source: e reporter.com.ng/index.php/entertainment-news/item/1873-the-n80m-hummer-limousine-bishop-tom-samson-says-the-car-was-a-gift |

Bill Cosby was sued Tuesday by a Southern California woman who claims the comedian molested her in a bedroom of the Playboy Mansion around 1974 when she was 15 years old. Judy Huth's sexual battery lawsuit does not specify how much she is seeking from Cosby, who has been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct in recent weeks. Huth's lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, however, is the first time that a woman has claimed she was underage when she was abused, and it is the first lawsuit Cosby has faced claiming sexual abuse since 2005. Huth's lawsuit states that she and a 16-year-old friend first met Cosby at a Los Angeles-area film shoot and the comedian gave them drinks a week later at a tennis club. The lawsuit states that Cosby took them to the Playboy Mansion after several drinks. Her lawsuit states Cosby forced her to perform a sex act on him with his hand. An email message sent to Cosby's attorney Martin Singer was not immediately returned. Huth claims she suffered severe emotional distress and that she discovered its impact on her within the past three years, which allows her to file the lawsuit under California law. "This traumatic incident, at such a tender age, has caused psychological damage and mental anguish for (Huth) that has caused significant problems throughout her life Source: .com.ng |

In anticipation of the much awaited December 3 gubernatorial primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, campaigns are in top gear in all parts of the state for aspirants hoping to woo delegates. With the decision of the party hierarchy to allow for free and fair primaries, aspirants are out to test their popularity in the race, which has no fewer than 10 aspirants. Some of the aspirants include former Accountant-General of the state, Akinwunmi Ambode, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Obafemi Hamzat, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, serving senator, Ganiyu Solomon, and former Commissioner for Health, Leke Pitan. Others are former Attorney-General of the state, Supo Sasore, former Commissioner for Special Duties, Tola Kasali, Tayo Ayinde, Tokunbo Wahab and Adetokunbo Tobun-Agbesanwa, the only female aspirant in the race. It had been alleged before now that Ambode was the 'anointed' candidate of the APC to fly the party's flag in the February 28 governorship election, but this did not go down well with other aspirants and their supporters who threatened to embark on protests. There were also indications last week that Sasore, who recently declared his intention to run for the election, may spring a surprise at the primary. Sasore is alleged to have the backing of Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola. Solomon's bid has also received a boost as two aspirants stepped down for him to emerge as consensus candidate from Ikorodu Division. Solomon is banking on his grassroots popularity to clinch the ticket. Hamzat, on his part, is said to be relying on his experience, which has seen him work closely with former governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as Fashola. Meanwhile, the chances of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) upstaging the APC in Lagos in the governorship election took a dip on Saturday as six stalwarts of the party defected to the APC with thousands of their supporters. Among them are former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Rafiu Jafojo, and former chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association in the state, Abayomi Finnih, as well as Tunde Daramola, a former financial secretary of the PDP in the state, Mrs. Oluwole, Alhaji Okanlawon and Segun Adeyemi. Source: .com.ng President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday publicly lamented that he was unable to make a Yoruba politician the Speaker of the House of Representatives after 2011 general elections because of the selfish agenda of some Yoruba leaders. He spoke at the Yoruba Unity Summit with the theme: “National Development: Wither the Yoruba,” which held at the Oduduwa Hall of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Jonathan who was the special guest of honour at the event organised by the Yoruba Unity Forum, said he recognised the Southwest as a key player in the country and was still haunted by that unfortunate incident in 2011 when his desire to repay the Yoruba for their support for him was lost. Mulikat Akande had then vied to be Speaker of the House of Representatives but lost to Aminu Tambuwal of the Northwest because of inadequate support from her Southwestern colleagues. Recalling the events, the President said: “I thank you all for the support in the past elections. One of the problems I faced in the National Assembly is that I felt the right thing should be done because our party, the PDP, has a formula. |
