The Governor of Bauchi State, Isa Yuguda, has stated that the persons who attacked President Goodluck Jonathan’s entourage were sponsored by leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and not by the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC. Mr. Yuguda, who is the leader of the PDP in Bauchi, stated this in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service. PREMIUM TIMES reported how President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election campaign in Bauchi on Thursday turned violent when the persons converged at the Ibrahim Babangida Square, venue of the event, and hurled shoes, plastic water bottles and other objects at the canopy where the president and members of his campaign team were delivering their speeches. Although security operatives intervened to stop the thugs from disrupting the event, several vehicles coming out of the venue, belonging to the PDP presidential campaign team, were stoned while tyres were burnt. The violent youth also clashed with security personnel deployed around Ran road and the Bauchi central market where a police patrol van was set ablaze by irate youth. The PDP and the APC have accused each other of orchestrating the incident with both condemning it. However, Mr. Yuguda, who hosted the president at the occasion, blamed PDP leaders from Bauchi, who are opposed to his administration, for the attack. “The attack was organized by some of our top party chieftains who are from the state and reside in Abuja. They staged this disgraceful action of the youth,” the governor said in Hausa. In less than three weeks Nigerians will go to the polls to elect a new president. As the race becomes more intense a complex mix of factors in different states would shape the eventual outcome. In this piece, Yusuf Alli, Managing Editor, Northern Operation, Sam Egburonu, Associate Editor, Dare Odufowokan, Assistant Editor and Sunday Oguntola, present a status report as the race enters the home stretch. More than at any other period in the history of the Fourth Republic, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is on the edge. It is fighting tooth and nail to cling to power in a tight race. There’s no one better qualified to confirm this than National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), who said in London on Thursday that “the emergence of a seemingly viable opposition, as well as the closeness of the race is a clear demonstration of our maturing democracy…” Investigations by our reporters in various states of the federation indicate that the votes haul from three zones in the North as well as the outcome in the South-West could be pivotal determining the race. In the South-South-South and South-East, the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan retains strong support. However, in-fighting in the PDP in Ebonyi, Imo, Akwa Ibom and even in the president’s home state, Bayelsa, could lead to a significant drop in his share of votes cast. The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) is expectedly to perform markedly better in aforementioned two zones than he did in 2011 – benefitting from the bitter fallout of the PDP squabbles and the stronger platform on which he’s running this time around. If the elections were held today, these are the projected outcome as put together by our editorial team tracking the contest from state to state. KEBBI The PDP has lost more ground to the opposition in the last three weeks. Just a few days ago, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees, Sen. Mohammed Magoro, defected to APC in looks like a political development that has broken the camel’s back. The tumultuous crowd which heralded Buhari’s visit to Birnin Kebbi signposts an advantage for APC. With ex-Governor Adamu Aliero and other stalwarts of PDP now in APC, a 60-40 victory might be imminent for the opposition in Kebbi. Verdict: Buhari NIGER In spite of the drafting of Senate President, David Mark, Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Sen. Bala Mohammed to lend a helping hand to the embattled Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, things are falling apart for PDP in the state. The climax of PDP’s misfortunes was the defection of Deputy Governor Ahmed Musa Ibeto to APC with 300 others. The defection suggested an undertone of backing by some kingmakers in the state because it came shortly after ex-President Ibrahim Babangida declared support for Buhari. Apparently hitting back at one of the godfathers, an angry Governor Aliyu said: “They said I went to IBB over those who defected. I have passed the stage of begging anybody…” A 70-30 race advantage for APC is likely here. Verdict: Buhari See more Predictions: e reporter.com.ng/index.php/political-news/item/2787-presidency-2015-north-still-holds-the-ace

Mistrust between Nigeria and neighbouring Cameroun as well as disagreements over how to deploy troops against Boko Haram have stalled efforts to set up a regional force to combat the Islamist militants. Failure to launch the 2,800-strong mission as planned in November has left the insurgents in control of large swathes of Nigeria's North-east from where they launch attacks. The group, which aims to carve out an Islamist emirate in northern Nigeria, carried out a scorched-earth raid this month on Baga, a town on the shores of the Lake Chad that was due to serve as the headquarters for the regional force. The fall of Baga and reports of the slaughter of up to 2,000 inhabitants underscore the risks of Nigeria and Cameroun failing to work together. Amid mounting international alarm, Ghana's President John Mahama, Chairman of the West Africa regional bloc ECOWAS, said leaders would press the African Union next week to create a multinational force. But countries of the Lake Chad region are still expected to form the backbone of any mission. Defence and foreign ministers from the four nations met in Niamey yesterday but analysts do not expect a breakthrough on deployment. For joint military action to succeed, the countries must bury their differences and pool troops and intelligence under a unified command, experts and diplomats said. "The principal thing that has been stopping this multi-national force from coming about has been the historical distrust and underlying tensions between the two key players: Nigeria and Cameroun," said Imad Mesdoua, an analyst with the London-based Africa Matters consultancy. The four nations of the Lake Chad Basin -- Cameroun, Chad, Niger and Nigeria -- agreed to bring their forces together to fight Boko Haram in October, together with a contingent from Benin, which borders Nigeria to the west. But disagreements surfaced over how to deploy the troops. Cameroun insisted that because Boko Haram was an internal Nigerian issue, foreign troops should not be sent into the country, diplomats and military officials said. Yaounde was also concerned about allowing Nigeria's army to chase Boko Haram into its territory because of its soldiers' poor human rights record, another diplomat said. Nigeria says Cameroun has been too passive in the fight against the insurgents and allowed Boko Haram to use its territory as a rear base and supply route. That appears to have changed, with Cameroun's elite Rapid Intervention Brigade clashing with the insurgents almost daily. Ghana's President Mahama says the growing threat is forcing Lake Chad countries towards cooperation. "Mistrust is one of the obstacles but I think that with the clear and present danger most countries face if something was not done about Boko Haram, we have reached the point where they are willing to work together," he said. However, neighbouring countries blame Nigeria's military's shortcomings. In October, it was agreed that regional troops in Baga would play a defensive role at the border while Nigerian forces would attack Boko Haram within its territory. But Niamey pulled its troops from Baga after the Nigerian army lost town after town to Boko Haram and its soldiers fled into Niger. "Even earlier on, it became apparent that the Nigerian troops were somewhat avoiding battles and were not vigorously taking on Boko Haram offensives," a senior military officer in Niamey said. "Chad and Niger decided to withdraw their troops from Baga, unwilling to serve as cannon fodder." Nigerian defence ministry spokesman, Gen. Chris Olukolade, taking questions on Twitter, denied the military leadership was "corrupt and incompetent" and said the armed forces were "highly patriotic and committed". Following a lull in attacks between late October and early November, Nigeria announced a surprise ceasefire with the group, brokered by Chad. However, it was rejected by Boko Haram, which stepped up its attacks. Ahead of Nigeria's February 14 presidential election, the army has been on the back foot rather than preparing counter offensives, Mesdoua said. This has allowed Boko Haram to stage attacks with increased fire power in Cameroun, angering officials in Yaounde who accuse Nigeria of abandoning the fight. "We're getting fed up with the situation. Nigeria has to take its responsibilities," Cameroun army spokesman Colonel Didier Badjeck said. "We cannot continue to support the weight of a war which we don't even know the whys and wherefores." Badjeck said Nigerian forces were abandoning combat and leaving behind weapons later used by the militants to attack across the border. Cameroun has appealed for international help, prompting Chad to send several hundred troops to the country over the weekend. Washington has pledged to support Cameroun and neighbouring countries with military equipment and training. France has promised to help coordinate intelligence-sharing and joint operations. "The centrality of intelligence sharing and communication cannot be underestimated in a fight like this one," said Mesdoua. "They don’t talk to one another or share information on what is happening in real time." THE controversy surrounding the educational qualification of the Presidential standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, may have finally been laid to rest by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The commission on Wednesday posted on its website the profiles of the 14 presidential candidates and their deputies for the February 14 general election. In the statement, INEC recorded West African School Certificate (WASC) for Gen. Buhari. There has been a raging controversy over the academic credentials of the Katsina State-born army-turned politician in the last couple of weeks. On Wednesday, the APC claimed that Buhari’s certificates were seized by the administration of General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida shortly after the 1985 putsch, at which Buhari was kicked out of office. While listing all eligible candidates for the highest office in the land and their running mates on Thursday, INEC indicated that Buhari possesses a secondary school leaving certificate. Of the number, 23 possessed either first degrees or the Higher National Diploma, HND and above while three, including Gen. Buhari had either the West African School Certificate, WASC or its equivalent. The commission’s spokesman, Kayode Idowu, told the Daily Times on Thursday night that INEC simply uploaded the information supplied by the candidates. Six of the candidates, including President Goodluck Jonathan, have Ph.Ds. The list showed that only seven of the 14 presidential candidates and their running mates had their ages to their names. Not even the ages of the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice President Namadi Sambo were included. The ages of Gen. Buhari and his running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo were also missing in the list. Source: http://.com.ng

seven-month-old baby was among three persons that were feared dead yesterday in Aba, Abia State following a ghastly auto accident involving a commercial tricycle and a Pilot Hilux van. The accident occurred opposite Rowmay Hotels, along the Opobo-Ovom-Azumini Highway on the outskirts of the commercial city at about 12noon. It was gathered that a Pilot hilux van alleged to belong to a popular industrialist in the city, which was conveying about three mobile policemen, was heading towards the residence of the man on high speed when the driver attempted to overtake a vehicle in front of him. In the process, the Hilux van had a head-on collision with a Keke NAPEP with five passengers on board. Three of the passengers and the seven months old baby, who was backed by the mother died instantly. A source said: “The car was coming from Opobo junction on a high speed, blaring its siren before it collided with the commercial Keke NAPEP which was coming from Ovom and was heading towards the Opobo junction.” “The driver of the Hilux was trying to overtake a car and when he suddenly saw another car coming from the opposite direction, veered off his lane and collided with the Keke on the other lane. The tricycle tumbled as the passengers were trapped inside. We rushed to the scene immediately to assist them, unfortunately before help could come their way, three persons out of the five passengers involved in the accident were already dead. When Daily Sun visited the accident scene, policemen from Azuka police station were already there to ascertain the level of damage. A police source did not disclose the mortuary where the bodies of the dead were deposited, confirmed that three persons, including the baby died in the accident. Source: http://.com.ng
