A memorandum of understanding (MoU) describes a bilateral or multilateral agreement between two or more parties. It expresses a convergence of will between the parties, indicating an intended common line of action. It is often used in cases where parties either do not imply a legal commitment or in situations where the parties cannot create a legally enforceable agreement. It is a more formal alternative to a gentlemen's agreement. Source: .com.ng The Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday launched another verbal attack on the Peoples Democratic Party-led administration of the federal government for what he described as the harsh austerity unleashed on Nigeria. He alleged that the pains Nigeria is going through is as a result of the president’s unfriendly economic policy. The governor called on Nigerians to deploy their permanent voters card issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as strong weapon to vote out President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 for foisting the dangerous policy at the least wish and expectation of millions of citizens. Speaking at the occasion of the formal decamping of the former minister, Ogiewonyi and about 2,500 others to the APC, the minister said, “when I pitched my tent with the PDP some years ago, I was with the genuine expectation that it was a platform that will truly enable me continue my service to humanity and that it will truly return power to the people as the power depicts. “However, PDP has continued to impoverish our people. The PDP has continued to lead us to perdition and the unreformed, anti-people and undemocratic Peoples Democratic Party has set us on the path of retrogression. “15 years of uninterrupted PDP national administration has woefully failed to approximate the expectations, dreams and yearnings of Nigerians. After very deep retrospection and wide consultation, I have come to the inevitable conclusion that I must join hands with the purposeful leadership of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to help consolidate in the monumental transformation in all spheres being witnessed in Edo State.” |
Source: .com.ng The former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Wednesday said the All Progressive Congress is the only party standing in the way of dictatorship and one party system in the country. Atiku, a presidential aspirant of the APC stated this in Abakaliki during his campaign visit to Ebonyi State chapter of the party. He noted that all the presidential aspirants of the party have resolved to support whoever emerges from the party’s primaries. According to him APC is set to end PDP monopoly of power at the centre in 2015 by emerging victorious at the polls. He said: “I want to thank you for the warm reception accorded me. This is the only time in the nation’s political history that we have opportunity to make positive change in our lives and unborn generation because since 1999, we have been subjected to only one party. We did not have an alternative, as we did now. “Since APC was formed last year, Nigeria now has a chance to make positive change. If APC did not come, we could have gotten what is in other African countries, that is we would have ended up with dictators. “If we fought military rule, we can fight one-party system. Because of the sins of PDP, there is no place for them in coming elections, both in Ebonyi and other parts of the country. “Who ever wins the APC primaries, vote for APC. That is the beauty of democracy. No matter the number of candidates, only one person would emerge. All of us are operating in the party’s interest. This would bring about the change we are advocating, to lift the party. Please support the candidate, don’t vote for another party. “I am in Ebonyi to acquaint myself with the party’s problems in the state. So that if am opportuned by God’s and your grace, I will know how to solve the problems. Seeing is believing, not someone sitting down somewhere and urging for your votes and support. “I am here to tell you that your vote is your power, your road to prosperity and development. To change those who say they would govern us for the next 60 years. If you finish voting, don’t go, stay there and see that they are counted and recorded.” |
Source: .com.ng Facts emerged on Tuesday that a crisis might be brewing in the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the decision by the leadership of the party to give automatic tickets to incumbent governors to contest the 2015 elections. This was revealed by a governorship aspirant of the party in Yobe State, Mr. Mustapha Maihaja. Maihaja who has been battling to submit his expression of interest and nomination forms to the party secretariats in Abuja and Damaturu, alleged that the National Secretary, Mr. Mai Mala Buni, had told him that it was the policy of the party that nobody should contest against all the incumbent governors. Maihaja, who cried out over the refusal of the state chapter of the party to accept his nomination form, said it would amount to injustice for the party to toe the step. Meanwhile, another governorship aspirant, from Sokoto State, Aliyu Abubakar Sanyinna, has expressed outrage over move to frustrate his submission of nomination form. Sanyinna, who was a former Sokoto State Commissioner for Information and state Attorney General, explained that he came to the national secretariat in Abuja to return his form as stipulated by the party guidelines but was redirected to go back to the state. While speaking with journalists at the party secretariat, Maihaja also complained about how he was denied submission of his nomination form by the chairman of the party in the state without any reason. Maihaja who said he had earlier contested for the party’s ticket during the 2011 elections but could not secure the ticket, said his attempt to return his nomination form to the state secretariat was rebuffed by the state chapter. The aspirant said he had gone to the state secretariat in Yobe State on Monday as advised by Senator Osita Izunaso but said he and his supporters were stopped from entering Damanturu from Nguru. “We were denied entry into Damaturu yesterday (Monday) by the police on the order of the governor. But here I am again nobody is ready to receive the form from me everyone is avoiding telling me why they are doing this to me.” He recalled how he came to the national secretariat last Friday, some party officials with the national secretary of the party told him to take his form back to Damaturu. According to him, when he wanted to know why he was not allowed to submit his nomination form, the National Secretary, Alhaji Mala Buni, told him it was the policy of the party that automatic ticket be given to all its sitting governors whose first tenure is about to expire and any aspirant contesting against them would be disqualified. According to Maihaja, when he was denied the form by the state chapter of the party, he ran to the national secretariat in Abuja as directed by its National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who ensured he got the form. But when he brought back the same form on Thursday to submit to the Director of Organisation of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Jari, who gave him the form, he was told to take the form back to Damaturu for submission. He said on getting to the party secretariat in Damaruru, the police refused him entry on the orders of the state chairman. “The police stopped my entourage but when I contacted the Commissioner of Police, I was allowed to pass alone. “However. it was a mild drama as he insisted in submitting his form but a call came from the office of the Organising Secretary, Senator Izunaso, asking him to join in taking a group photograph with another governorship aspirant for Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, who also came to submit his form. “After taking some photographs, Izunaso accepted the form from the other candidate but the moment Maihaja brought out his own and said he is from Yobe state the Organising Secretary told him to submit it to Jari, who had earlier rejected the form. However, Izunaso advised Maihaja to go back to Damaturu to return his form.” An enraged Maihaja stormed out of the Organising Secretary’s office alleging that the National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni and Governor Ibrahim Geidam might be behind his travails. “I was invited to a meeting with Jari, Senator Izunaso, George Morgalu and the National Secretary, Buni where the National Secretary told me that it was the policy of the party that nobody should contest against all the governors. This is strange to me and nobody had ever said that before. George Morgalu corroborated the National Secretary,” the Yobe State governorship aspirant told journalists. Mahaja told journalists that the party leadership had asked him to go back again to Yobe State to submit his form, adding that the Oyegun, had directed the state chapter to collect the form. On his next line of action over the form, he said: “I would not give up because I know the national secretary is not saying the whole truth. I am sure the leadership of the party would revisit the Yobe State issue. What I am doing is in the interest of our party.” A top party official who does not want to be quoted told journalists that the party had no choice but to intervene in the embarrassing situation. “This is embarrassing to us because there was never a time when we gave automatic ticket to any governor. But let me assure you that the National Executive council (NEC) of the party would look into the matter dispassionately. Our policy is to allow every aspirant to participate in a level playing field,” he said. On why he was contesting, Maihaja who rolled out a list of his manifestoes and programmes which he said would change “Yobe State from being called a rural area into urban if implemented,” said the party might run into a problem if it is banking on the governor as candidate. Maihaja said: “If I am elected governor, I would use my experience in the private sector as an electrical engineer to transform the state into an enviable status. Every sector of the state would be transformed; education, health, infrastructure and employment for our youths with a view to addressing the ongoing security challenges facing the North-east,” he added. |

Source: .com.ng A presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday said the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan cannot pretend that it knew nothing about the invasion of the All Progressive Congress data centre in Lagos. He said the clampdown on the centre was a foretaste of things to come in 2015. He said the government had shown that it would not conduct “anything resembling free and fair elections.” The former head of state said the desperation of the Peoples Democratic Party is growing by the hour. Buhari, who made his position known in a statement in Abuja through his aide, Sabi’u Tunde, asked the Presidency to stop “defending the indefensible.” He expressed regrets that the Federal Government was pushing the nation into chaos. The statement said: “Almost every day, the Jonathan presidency seems intent on demonstrating for all to see that they have mastered the art of how to push a nation into chaos within the shortest time possible. “The early morning attack by security operatives on the APC data centre in Lagos on Saturday November 22nd is one of such display in a growing chain of abuse and violation of the constitution and political rights of the people. It is a reckless act that must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. “The APC data centre housed internal party membership information and was also an important vehicle to disseminate information to APC members. “Yet, for conducting functions necessary and proper for a political party operating within the democratic context, the Centre became a hated target of the Jonathan government and the PDP.” He indicted the administration of being behind the attack on the APC data centre. The statement added: “The Jonathan government cannot claim ignorance. The security operatives conducting this illegal raid must have been ordered from Abuja. They would not have done what they did unless given the mandate from their high bosses in Abuja. “Attempting to defend the indefensible, they fabricate a story that the attack was necessary because criminal activity was taking place at the Centre. These statements are such plain lies. “These acts are nothing but a foretaste of things to come. From these attacks, this government is signaling to the Nigerian people they have no intention of holding anything resembling free and fair elections. “Their goal is not to create a level electoral playing field. Their goal is to level the opposition into the dust through the abuse of federal power.” The APC presidential aspirant accused the PDP of becoming desperate to win the 2015 poll at all cost. |

Hankins said the figure represented an increase of about 38,000 visa applications when compared with the 182,000 applications in the previous year. She said, “Between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2013, the embassy in Abuja and consulate in Lagos received more than 182,000 non-immigrant visa applications, the majority of which were approved. “Between October 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014, we received more than 220,000 applications. “Again, the majority of those applications were approved. “We hope that Nigerians’ desire to visit our beautiful country will continue to grow. “And we look forward to working with our partners to allow qualified tourists and business travellers to do so.” According to her, the Consulate in Lagos received 15, 500 immigrant visa applications between October 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014, out of which 4, 900 applications were approved. She added that there was no limit to the visa applications the embassy could receive and approve. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the consular official explained that the US-Nigeria partnership remained strong. Source: .com.ng |

Source: .com.ng No fewer than 45 traders and passerby have been killed in two suicide bomb attacks today (Tuesday) near Maiduguri main market. Eye witnesses and security sources say the alleged suicide bombers were two females dressed in full hijab and they detonated bombs hidden under their garments. The explosions occurred at about 11:20 a.m. at a crowded Maiduguri commercial area called One-Way. Today's blast is the first in the city since the last that of July 2. According to witnesses accounts, there was a first explosion that killed three women before the second one exploded and killed many persons who gathered at the scene of the first blast. Abba Aji an official of the Civilian-JTF, told reporters that at the time he arrived the scene, eleven bodies were still yet to be evacuated, even as he said many other corpses and several injured victims had been conveyed to hospital. "We cannot say immediately the actual number of the dead casualties, until we put together the figures later," Mr. Aji said. "We have many people that are seriously injured after the two blast." According to the Civilian-JTF official, the bombers were two girls dressed in full hijab. "One of them detonated herself and about three persons - all women - were killed, and minutes after that when people came round to see what happened, another bomb went off after a girl screamed and many people, over 30 of them got killed. We cannot say the exact figure for now because even before our arrival here some of the corpses had been taken away, while some including that of the bombers were mangled beyond recognition," he said. A youth vigilante source confirmed that the female attacker kept a parcel in one of the shops on One-way, a commercial area beside the popular Monday Market, telling the traders that she had something to pick from the market, “The package detonated few minutes later. And as people were still wondering what happened and trying to rescue the injured, a bomber in the same area detonated a bomb planted on her; this claimed so many lives,” the source said. Another unconfirmed source said 65 corpses had been evacuated while others claimed 30 people were killed in the explosion. Another source claimed that the third bombing suspect was caught by the people. This also could not be confirmed as the police had yet to give an official confirmation of the explosion. |

Source: http://www..com.ng/ An Italian doctor has contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone and is being flown back to Rome for specialist treatment, the health ministry said Monday. The ministry said the doctor, the first Italian to contract the disease, would arrive in Rome late Monday or early Tuesday and be hospitalised at the Lazzaro Spallanzani national institute for infectious disease. The doctor was working for NGO Emergency at a clinic for Ebola victims when he contracted the disease, which has killed more than 5,000 people in its latest outbreak in West Africa. “We can reassure his family that the doctor is feeling well,” health minister Beatrice Lorenzin said in a statement. “He did not have a fever or other symptoms during the night and this morning he had his breakfast.” The NGO said the doctor had developed some unspecified Ebola symptoms but was in a “good general condition.” The more serious symptoms of Ebola can take weeks to develop. Emergency said all its staff in Sierra Leone had been trained to avoid contamination. “However no healthcare in such a serious epidemic can be considered completely risk-free,” the NGO said in a statement. “The situation in Sierra Leone is alarming: the epidemic is still widening with 100 new cases a day. According to the World Health Organisation there are more than 5,000 people with Ebola in the country but the real figures could be much higher.” |
A charred body has been found near a train station in southern Egypt after a bomb exploded, as police uncovered three unexploded devices planted on railway tracks in the region. The blast took place on Saturday night in the town of Al-Wasta, in the province of Beni Suef, south of Cairo. The interior ministry said in a statement that the body probably belonged to the person who had planted the bomb. The unexploded bombs were found on railway lines linking Cairo to the far southern city of Aswan, the ministry said. Egypt has been hit by a wave of bombings and shootings since the military ousted President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. Assailants have stepped up attacks targeting public transport, including a bomb last week on a train north of Cairo that killed two policemen and two passengers. On Thursday, four people were hurt in a stampede at the capital’s Ramses station after a blast inside a compartment of a train that pulled in from the Nile Delta, security officials said. The blast was caused by a sound bomb, they said. Source: http://www..com.ng/ |

The Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, has alleged that valuables in his house were looted following invasion of his official apartment by Mr. Dele Olugbemi, the purported Speaker installed by seven PDP members last Monday. Omirin said Olugbemi led thugs and the Clerk of the House of Assembly to the Speaker’s Lodge, forced the doors open and looted his valuables, including money and household material and soup in the deep freezer. The Speaker scoffed at alleged looting of the Lodge by Governor Ayodele Fayose, saying that as the time he was living the house for Lagos, he left with a briefcase containing few cloths and shoes, adding that he never knew that he would not be allowed to return to the house after arriving Lagos and so there was nothing to give him a sign to leave the house with any loot.
