The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of undermining Nigeria’s democracy through what it described as a hasty assent to the controversial Electoral Act Amendment Bill. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party said the President’s speedy approval of the bill amounted to “signing the death warrant on credible elections” in the country. “With the alarmingly speedy assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the death warrant on credible elections and by so doing set Nigeria’s democracy back by several decades,” the statement read. Muyiwa Adekeye, Media Adviser to former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai, on Thursday alleged attempt by security agents to arrest the ex-governor. Adekeye alleged that the security agents attempted to arrest El-Rufai upon his arrival on a flight from Cairo. There was a rowdy session in the Senate on Tuesday during an emergency session to adopt the Votes and Proceedings of the February 4th sitting, during which the Electoral Bill was passed. This followed the controversy that trailed the decision of the Red Chamber to exclude a provision mandating real time electronic transmission of results from polling units in the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act. The session became rowdy after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read out details of proposed amendment to Section 60(3) after Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno) had moved a motion under Order 1b 52(6) that the Red Chamber rescinded its earlier decision. Some lawmakers were not comfortable with certain words in the new proposal. Ademola Lookman has completed his move to Atletico Madrid from Atalanta. The remains of Nigerian gospel musician, Bunmi Adeoye Akinnanu, popularly known as for her hit song “Omije Ojumi ,” who passed away on January 12, has been laid to rest at Atan cemetery in Lagos. Her body was interred today January 28. Her interment was however interrupted by a drama that took place at her graveside between her estranged husband’s family members and their kids. According to reports, the estranged husband, who is said to be based in the US, had asked to speak with their children just by her graveside. This was however resisted by her family members on grounds that the graveside wasn’t the place for him to demand to speak with the children who were mourning the passing of their mum. Nigerian Fuji singer, Afeez Adeshina, better known as Destiny Boy, has been laid to rest in Ogun state. The final rites were held on Friday at his father’s residence in the Odo Rori Compound, Ayetoro Yewa. Destiny Boy died on January 17 at the age of 22 following a prolonged illness. His burial, announced by family representative Alabi Gbenga, drew friends, family, and fans to the somber ceremony. Emotional scenes unfolded as his body, transported in a white ceremonial vehicle, was carried on a local mat to its final resting place, accompanied by the cries of grieving loved ones. A petrol-laden tanker has overturned on the Tincan Liverpool Bridge, in the Apapa area of Lagos, with hordes of residents and passersby scooping petrol from beneath the bridge. Eyewitnesses say the tanker tipped over in the early hours of Monday during rush hour, with road traffic management personnel yet to arrive at the scene at the time of reporting. A making rounds online shows locals grabbing jerrycans and containers of all shapes and sizes as they joined in on the act.
