The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of undermining Nigeria’s democracy through what it described as a hasty assent to the controversial Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party said the President’s speedy approval of the bill amounted to “signing the death warrant on credible elections” in the country.

“With the alarmingly speedy assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the death warrant on credible elections and by so doing set Nigeria’s democracy back by several decades,” the statement read.

The ADC questioned what it termed the “extraordinary haste” with which the amendment was passed by the National Assembly and signed into law, despite what it described as widespread objections from citizens.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday called on Nigerians to embrace unity, peace, and moral renewal as Muslims commence the Ramadan fast, emphasizing forgiveness and compassion as core teachings of the holy month.

The Police Force, on Tuesday, fired teargas at protesters who stormed the National Assembly to express their grievances against the Senate’s approval of both electronic transmission and manual collation of election results in the ongoing Electoral Act amendment.

The protesters gathered at the National Assembly gate but later tried to forcefully gain entrance into the complex, which propelled the Police to fire teargas canisters against them.

Following the confrontation, several of the protesters, including women, scampered for safety, leading to pandemonium at the National Assembly gate.

In the panic that ensued, an average-aged woman was reported to have fainted as a result of the gas she inhaled.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives on Tuesday descended into a rowdy session following a motion seeking to rescind the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2025, which was earlier passed by the chamber in December last year.

According to reports, the heated argument occured following Senator Natasha’s absence during a budget defence session of the committee earlier in the day.Unconfirmed reports claim Senator Natasha was excluded from the meeting and upon hearing about it, stormed the office of the committee chairman to express her dissatisfaction but was denied entry. This led to a heated exchange involving members of staff in the Committee Chairman’s office and Senator Natasha’s staff.

During the commotion, one of the senator’s aides was accused of physically confronting a staff member attached to the chairman’s office, prompting security intervention.

The situation was eventually brought under control by National Assembly security personnel, although details surrounding the immediate trigger of the altercation remain unclear.

Tensions escalated at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, headquarters in Abuja on Monday as protesters and supporters of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, reportedly clashed with security forces.

Tear gas was reportedly deployed to disperse the crowd.

In a video cited by our reporter, voices of various protesters were heard saying; “We will come back; when it clears, we will come back,” signaling the group’s determination to return despite the disruption.

Muyiwa Adekeye, Media Adviser to former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai, on Thursday alleged attempt by security agents to arrest the ex-governor.

Adekeye alleged that the security agents attempted to arrest El-Rufai upon his arrival on a flight from Cairo.

In a statement, Adekeye said El-Rufai declined to accompany the agents without a formal invitation, after which they took his passport from an aide.

He also claimed that the agents seized the former governor’s international passport at the airport.

There was a rowdy session in the Senate on Tuesday during an emergency session to adopt the Votes and Proceedings of the February 4th sitting, during which the Electoral Bill was passed.

This followed the controversy that trailed the decision of the Red Chamber to exclude a provision mandating real time electronic transmission of results from polling units in the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act.

The session became rowdy after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read out details of proposed amendment to Section 60(3) after Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno) had moved a motion under Order 1b 52(6) that the Red Chamber rescinded its earlier decision.

Some lawmakers were not comfortable with certain words in the new proposal.

Thereafter, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe called for a point of order to allow each senator vote individually, citing division under Order 70. He later withdrew the point of order which might jeopardize the amendment to Clause 60(3).

A tense confrontation erupted between former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and police officers at the National Assembly.

In a viral video on Tuesday, Amaechi, a former Transportation Minister, could be seen engaging in a shouting match with police operatives.

Amaechi, who attended the protest with his son – a medical doctor – said he brought him along in case the demonstration turns violent and injuries are sustained.

He explained that he came with his son to demonstrate his belief that during major protests, leaders should be at the forefront with their families.

The protesters on Monday morning stormed the National Assembly to protest the action taken by the Senate.

Speaking at the protest ground, Obi faulted the Senate’s position on the electronic transmission of election results, urging lawmakers to allow the electoral process to proceed without restrictions.

Obi said, “Allow the election to go through the normal process. Whatever the outcome is, we will accept it. Why introduce confusion after the process?”

The remains of Nigerian gospel musician, Bunmi Adeoye Akinnanu, popularly known as for her hit song “Omije Ojumi ,” who passed away on January 12, has been laid to rest at Atan cemetery in Lagos. Her body was interred today January 28.

Her interment was however interrupted by a drama that took place at her graveside between her estranged husband’s family members and their kids.

According to reports, the estranged husband, who is said to be based in the US, had asked to speak with their children just by her graveside. This was however resisted by her family members on grounds that the graveside wasn’t the place for him to demand to speak with the children who were mourning the passing of their mum.

A shouting match ensued between one of the estranged husband’s sister and the late gospel singer’s son after the aunt claimed he is a member of their family and that they love him.

President Bola Tinubu fell briefly during a ceremonial parade organised for his reception in Türkiye on Tuesday.

The incident happened as Tinubu joined the guard of honour.

The directive, announced on Monday, follows weeks of warnings by the state government to traders, market leaders, and residents to disengage from the sit-at-home order, which officials say has no lawful backing and has continued to cripple economic activities across the state.

While the shutdown is for one week, the government is warning that if the market fails to fully reopen by next Monday, the closure will be extended to one month, a move that could have far-reaching economic consequences for traders and supply chains across the South-East and beyond.

“This is no longer about fear or compliance under duress. It is about restoring law, order, and economic sanity,” a senior government official said.

Nigerian Fuji singer, Afeez Adeshina, better known as Destiny Boy, has been laid to rest in Ogun state.

The final rites were held on Friday at his father’s residence in the Odo Rori Compound, Ayetoro Yewa.

Destiny Boy died on January 17 at the age of 22 following a prolonged illness.

His burial, announced by family representative Alabi Gbenga, drew friends, family, and fans to the somber ceremony.

Emotional scenes unfolded as his body, transported in a white ceremonial vehicle, was carried on a local mat to its final resting place, accompanied by the cries of grieving loved ones.

The family remembered the artiste as a “kind-hearted, humble, and exceptionally hardworking young man”.

A petrol-laden tanker has overturned on the Tincan Liverpool Bridge, in the Apapa area of Lagos, with hordes of residents and passersby scooping petrol from beneath the bridge.

Eyewitnesses say the tanker tipped over in the early hours of Monday during rush hour, with road traffic management personnel yet to arrive at the scene at the time of reporting.

A making rounds online shows locals grabbing jerrycans and containers of all shapes and sizes as they joined in on the act.

This is not the first time residents would be scooping fuel from a petrol-laden tanker — with sometimes fatal consequences to boot.

Ifedayo Olarinde, better known as Daddy Freeze, has joined the conversation surrounding his friend Davido and the paternity saga trailing him.

The singer’s alleged daughter, Anu Adeleke, had written to Davido requesting that another DNA test be conducted to ascertain her paternity.

During an Instagram Live session, Daddy Freeze said he is almost certain that Davido is not Anu Adeleke’s father. According to him, he has seen one of the DNA test results conducted on the girl and also spoke with a member of Davido’s family about the issue.

Isaac Fayose, a brother of former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, has claimed that neither the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, nor Governor Siminalayi Fubara, can secure Rivers State for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election without electoral manipulation.

According to him, both Wike and Fubara lack the grassroots support required to win the state for the APC in a free and fair election.
