As the CAF 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs approach in Morocco, the Super Eagles of Nigeria stands at a crossroads, and the weight of expectation falls squarely on the shoulders of one man, Victor Osimhen. Since bursting onto the scene in 2017, Victor Osimhen has carried both the burden and the brilliance of Nigerian football. He is not just another forward; he is the heartbeat of the team. His impact is written in hard numbers: Nigeria has failed to win any of the five games he missed during the current World Cup qualifying campaign, but in the five he started, he scored six goals and provided an assist. When he was injured against Rwanda, confidence seemed to evaporate from the fans. That 1-1 draw with South Africa that followed felt like a warning sign, a reminder of what happens when their talisman is not there. Former Super Eagles skipper, John Mikel Obi, has said the current squad could make the mistake of underrating Gabon, ahead of their 2026 World Cup playoff clash. Nigeria will take on the Panthers on Thursday in the first semi-final for the African zone. Eric Chelle’s men could face either Cameroon or DR Congo for the single slot from the continent if they beat Gabon. But Mikel Obi, speaking on his podcast, warned the Eagles not to be overconfident. “Go into that game and play like this is the last game you will ever play in your life,” Mikel Obi said. “Win that game and then we can think about either Cameroon or someone else. “The mistake we are going to make is to think it’s just Gabon, then we are done completely.” Watch full video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_kHTziXZV8 |
