From the preceeding explanation, it was clear that the muslims weren't facing tribulations only from the Idol worshippers alone, they were equally seen as threat that must be neutralized by the jews and christain nations existing at that time. Except a few like the righteous Christain King Heracules of Abyssinia, words have gone out to other strong Nations to extaminate the light of Islam. So u have strong Nations like the Roman,Greek,Persian Empires preparing for war against a few numbers of Muslims. The only remaining choice was to fight in defence of their religion,especially when the hope in the peace treaty has faded away.

So Allah says- " Fight those who do not believe in God, nor in the Last Day, for, otherwise, they would have believed in the Prophet (s), and who do not forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden, [such as wine, nor do they practise the religion of truth, the firm one, the religion of Islam] — from among of those who have been given the Scripture, namely, the Jews and the Christians, until they pay the jizya (tribute, the annual tax imposed them, readily or being subdued, [being made] submissive and compliant to the authority of Islam.


The options with the People of Scripture is that if the muslims were not to engage them in war then they will be protected with justice under an Islamic rule and they will only be obligated to pay annual tax as a symbol of cooperation to the authority.

From the above, it is only normal to protect yourself,your honour,your religion against a force bent on uprooting you. And it is equally a sign of extending the hands of fellowship to your enemy that at the very verge of confrontation you give the choice to avoid bloodshed by the payment of annual tribute while been subjugated!

1. To sit and drink.
(Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 6452 and Sahih Muslim Hadith 5242, 5247).
Zamzam water and left over water in the utensil used for Wudhu are excluded from this.

2. To drink with the right hand. (Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5380; Sahih Muslim Hadith 5233)

3. To take 3 sips (or more in odd numbers).
(Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5631; Sahih Muslim Hadith 5255)

4. To say Bismillah before drinking.
(Sahih al-Bukhari and al-Azkaar; Fath al-Baari vol.10 pg.117)

5. To say Alhamdulillah after drinking. (Ibnus-sunni Hadith 472; Majmauz-zawaaid vol.5 pg.81; Sunan al-Tirmidhi Hadith 1885; Fath al-Bari vol.10 pg.117 Hadith 5631)

6. If there are several people who are going to share the drink, it should be given to the one on the right.
(Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 5612; Sahih Muslim Hadith5257)

7. The one who is distributing the water (or food) should himself drink after everyone. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi Hadith 1894)

8. To recite the following Du’a after drinking, ‘Alhamdulillaahi llaadhiy at’ama wa saqaa, wa sawwaghahu wa ja’ala lahu makhraja.'
(Abu Dawud Hadith3847). This Du’a could also be recited after eating. (Ibid)

9. After drinking milk to recite ‘Allaahumma baarik lanaa feehi wa zidnaa minhu’.
(Sunan Abi Dawud Hadith 3723; Sunan al-Tirmidhi Hadith 3455; ibnus-sunni Hadith 474).
