The musician was, on Monday afternoon, rushed to an undisclosed hospital in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, where he had gone to honour the invitation of the Ekiti State government to perform at the World Teachers Day organised by the state government. Education / Japanese, Chinese, Irish Share Nobel's Medicine Prize For Developing New Malaria by olatos4jesus: 10:51pm On Oct 05, 2015 |
Japanese, Chinese, Irish share Nobel's Medicine prize for developing new malaria, other drugs Three scientists from Japan, China and Ireland whose discoveries led to the development of potent new drugs against parasitic diseases such as malaria and elephantiasis won the Nobel Prize for Medicine on Monday. Irish-born William Campbell and Japan's Satoshi Omura won half of the prize for discovering avermectin, a derivative of which has been used to treat hundreds of millions of people with river blindness and lymphatic filariasis, or elephantiasis. China's Youyou Tu was awarded the other half of the prize for discovering artemisinin, a drug that has slashed malaria deaths and has become the mainstay of fighting the mosquito-borne disease. Some 3.4 billion people, most of them living in poor countries, are at risk of contracting these parasitic diseases. "These two discoveries have provided humankind with powerful new means to combat these debilitating diseases that affect hundreds of millions of people annually," the Nobel Assembly at Sweden's Karolinska Institute said. "The consequences in terms of improved human health and reduced suffering are immeasurable." Today, the medicine ivermectin, a derivative of avermectin made by Merck & Co, is used worldwide to fight roundworm parasites, while artemisinin-based drugs from firms including Sanofi and Novartis are the main weapons against malaria. Omura and Campbell made their breakthrough in fighting parasitic worms, or helminths, after studying compounds from soil bacteria. That led to the discovery of avermectin, which was then further modified into ivermectin. The treatment is so successful that river blindness and lymphatic filariasis are now on the verge of being eradicated. Youyou turned to a traditional Chinese herbal medicine in her hunt for a better malaria treatment, following the declining success of the older drugs chloroquine and quinine. This led to the isolation of artemisinin, a new class of anti-malaria drug. "We now have drugs that kill these parasites very early in their life-cycle," said Juleen Zierath, chair of the Nobel Committee. "They not only kill these parasites but they stop these infections from spreading." The eight million Swedish crowns ($960,000) medicine prize is the first of the Nobel prizes awarded each year. Prizes for achievements in science, literature and peace were first awarded in 1901 in accordance with the will of dynamite inventor and businessman, Alfred Nobel. http://tribuneonlineng.com/japanese-chinese-irish-share-nobels-medicine-prize-developing-new-malaria-other-drugs |
Politics / Workers Beat Up Air France Executives After Announcing Sack Of 2,900 by olatos4jesus: 10:45pm On Oct 05, 2015 |
Workers beat up Air France executives after announcing sack of 2,900 Air France managers were, on Monday, forced to flee the company's headquarters after being attacked by a mob of workers that tore their clothes off. Hundreds of angry staff stormed the Air France building at the Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Roissy, near Paris, after the company announced plans to cut 2,900 jobs on Monday. Two senior executives, Xavier Broseta, Vice President for Human Resources, and Pierre Plissonnier, deputy of Air France long-haul flights, both had their shirts ripped off their backs as they were evacuated through the crowds. Shortly before the attack, Mr Broseta and Air France Chief Executive, Frederic Gagey, had outlined a drastic cost cutting plan, which would see 2,900 jobs cut by 2017. The cuts include 1,700 ground staff, 900 cabin crew and 300 pilots as part of efforts to lower costs, two union sources said. Air France also confirmed in the meeting that it planned to shed 14 aircraft from its long-haul fleet, reducing the business by 10 per cent and that it wants to cancel its order for Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. This outraged staff, who are already at loggerheads with the company, and hundreds stormed the building, interrupting the meeting. Air France CEO had already left the room on Monday before the works council meeting was interrupted about an hour after it had begun. Mr Broseta and Mr Plissonnier had to be escorted through the crowds by security as outraged union members tore their suits apart, forcing them to climb over a fence to get to safety. Parent Air France-KLM said it planned to take legal action over 'aggravated violence' carried out against its managers. The action of the workers were later condemned by France's main airline industry union FNAM, calling it 'outdated behaviour.' Violent protests by workers are commonplace in France, where the population has a long tradition of taking the law into its own hands. Traffic disruption, damage to public property and injuries to police officers have gone hand-in-hand with a spate of demonstrations by farmers, taxi drivers, ferry workers and even tobacconists. http://tribuneonlineng.com/workers-beat-air-france-executives-after-announcing-sack-2900 |
