One person was killed by some suspected hoodlums trying to snatch a ballot box during Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in Ibadan.

An eyewitness, who identified the victim as Monsuru Hamzat, said the incident happened at Ward 2, Unit 13 and 14 Polling Centre in Ibadan South East Council area.

The eyewitness said the hoodlums came to snatch the ballot box while counting of votes was in progress.
Confirming the incident , the Oyo State commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, told NAN that the incident happened around 2:30 pm
Olukolu said it was alleged that a former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Taofeek Arapaja, came to the polling unit located in his family house with some hoodlums to disrupt the process.

“The hoodlums simply identified as Akin and Etiba, who were said to have come in company with Arapaja, fired a shot which hit one Monsuru Hamzat.
“Hamzat was rush to the hospital and eventually died,” Olukolu said.
He said that the police had protected the remaining ballot box and INEC staff at the polling unit.

The commissioner said another ballot box was snatched at Agodi area while one Adeyemi Ayomide in company with others were said to be involved.
He said Ayomide was arrested while the others escaped and the ballot box was recovered.

The Kano State Fire Service said on Tuesday evening that fire had razed the entire last floor of a three-storey building at No.1 Warri Road in Sabon Gari, Kano.

Spokesman of the service, Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the fire started at about 04:40 p.m.

“We received a distress call from Sabon Gari Market Division this evening (Tuesday) from one Sadiq Hashim at about 04:40 p.m. that there was a fire outbreak at a dwelling house.

“Upon receiving the information, we quickly sent a fire vehicle to the scene at about 04:45 p.m., to bring the situation under control,’’ he said.

He said the inferno affected seven bedrooms, three sitting rooms, four toilets and two kitchens in the residential building.

He added that the cause of the fire was still being investigated.

A 42-year-old teacher at Dzingire Primary School Zimbabwe has been hauled to court facing accusations of raping one of his pupils on two separate occasions after luring her with sachets of Jolly Juice powder on both incidents.

Warren Chikwewu, who was residing at the school, appeared at Chipinge Magistrates Court facing two counts of rape.

He was not asked to plead to the charges when he appeared before magistrate Mr Joshua Nembawire, who remanded him in custody to February 20, for trial.
Mr Nembawire advised Chikwewu to approach the High Court for bail application.

The All Progressives Congress APC Benue State, launched its gubernatorial campaign today in Makurdi, the Benue State Capital.The event which took place at the IBB Square was attended by a mammoth crowd. Right Honourable Emmanuel Jime ,The APC gubernatorial flagbearer ,while speaking at the event ,promised to introduce and implement free primary education and revolutionize Agriculture in the state to boost the economy.

Jime said he had presented himself as an alternative to deliver good governance for Benue State.
The representative of the APC National Chairman,Adams Oshiomole, Kassim Imam, presented APC flags to the gubernatorial candidates and charged Benue people to re-elect president Muhammadu Buhari, Jime and his deputy Samuel Ode, And all other candidates of the party for other elective positions.

The leader of the APC in the state and coordinator Buhari/Osibanjo campaign organization in the North Central, Senator George Akume, said that the APC government had done well under Buhari and Osinbajo in the areas of Agriculture,Infrastructure, Economy and he therefore urged the people of the state to reciprocate the gesture.

The Minister for Agriculture Cheif Audu Ogbe on his part Stated that Benue State had benefited immensely from the Buhari administration in the area of Agriculture and that Benue was now one of the leading producers of rice in the country ,he therefore urged the people to vote for Buhari and Osibanjo.
There were many other well wishers at the event which was characterized with a lot of fanfare in and around the venue of the event.

Officers of the Rapid Response Squad on patrol along Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos – prevented a man from jumping into the lagoon in a suicide attempt on Tuesday.

The rescued man has been handed over to Adekunle Police Station for investigation.
This is coming months after a journalist who works with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) committed suicide. He jumped into the Lagoon from the Third mainland bridge in Lagos.

The journalist pretended that he wanted to urinate after he alighted from a commercial bus conveying him and some of his colleagues to work before he dived into the lagoon.

The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos state police command rushed to the scene immediately but could not rescue the reporter. Thankfully, this time was different.

Police officer fell off a moving patrol van while jubilating on Tuesday in Lagos State.


The incident occurred on the premises of the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja area of the state.

Channels Television gathered that the police officer was among the personnel on the convoy of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Edgal Imohimi.

The policeman, who was on the van, was jubilating over the reversal of the decision to redeploy the police commissioner from the state.

While others fired gunshots in the air, he fell off the vehicle and the driver of the van ran over one of his legs.

The officer was, thereafter, taken to the hospital for medical attention.
On Sunday, the police authorities directed Mr Kayode Egbetokun to take over from Imohimi as police commissioner in Lagos.


Imohimi was then redeployed to the Force Headquarters in Abuja as the Commissioner of Police in charge of Explosive Ordinance Unit.

He, however, told the reporters who were at the command headquarters to witness the handover and takeover ceremony between him and Mr Egbetokun that the ceremony would no longer hold.

The police commissioner said they were already in the process of concluding the procedure which began before they got a signal from the Force Headquarters to maintain status quo.
