Politics / God Will Not Allow Any Other Party In Lagos Except APC – Oba Akiolu by Olawaleyy036(m): 7:04am On Dec 23, 2018
The Oba of Lagos, Oba Akiolu 1, has said that God will not allow any other party to take over governance in the state in the forthcoming general elections apart from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Oba Akiolu stated this in his remark yesterday at the 11th Annual Hijrah Lecture and inauguration of the new House of Assembly Mosque at the Assembly complex yesterday.

The new mosque, he said, is unique especially as it is built inside the Assembly complex where bills are passed into laws.

The Oba also pointed out that it is not enough to build mosque but that the custodians of the mosque should be properly taken care of.

He also advised the custodians not to do or be involved in anything that would tarnish the image of the religion.

Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, commended the congregation for donating fund for the rebuilding of the mosque.

He described a mosque as a holy place to worship Allah and supplicate to Him, adding that the custodians should do everything to ensure that it serves the purpose for which it was built.

Special guest of honour was Governor Akinwunmi Ambode who was represented by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr. AbdulHakeem Abdulateef, who is the Chief Imam of the House of Assembly Mosque, while the chairman of the occasion was Oba of Lagos & permanent chairman, Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, HRM Alaiyeluwa Oba Rilwan Osuolale Akiolu 1.

In his speech, the chairman of the Muslim community of the Assembly, Hon. Sikiru Osinowo, thanked God Almighty for the completion of the mosque.

“We started the mosque project so that we could fulfil the purpose of our coming here. We have seen Muslim speakers, and God made it possible for us to build the new mosque during the time of the current Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa,” he said.

Two clerics delivered lecture on the theme and title of the lecture, ‘The place of the mosque in human civilisation’.

The first guest lecturer was the Director, Islamic Affairs, Nigeria Air Force Base, Ikeja, Lagos State, Wing Commander Abdullahi Hassan Inuwa, and second lecturer was Shaykh Abdur Rasheed Mayaleke, chairman, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Ogun State.

Mayaleke describes a mosque as the “first house God provided for man. It is a place of learning, meeting, judgment, worship, a place where we meet on how to defeat our enemies.”

And that praying in the mosques for men is more acceptable than to pray at home, and that all Muslims must be given an opportunity to pray in the mosque.

Politics / Labour Rejects Proposed Technical Committee On Minimum Wage by Olawaleyy036(m): 9:05am On Dec 21, 2018
•Govt gets 10 days ultimatum to pass report to National Assembly

Labour leaders have rejected Federal Government’s plan to set up another high-powered technical committee on the new national minimum wage.

The leaders of the union, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the United Labour Congress (ULC), stated this in a communiqué jointly signed and issued at the end of national leadership meeting of organised labour in Nigeria held in Lagos yesterday. According to the labour leaders, the government’s plan is diversionary and a delay tactics.

They said almost two months after the submission of the report by the national minimum wage tripartite committee, which included a draft bill, no bill has been submitted to the National Assembly for passage into law.

NLC President Ayuba Wabba said: “As far as we are concerned, all the issue has been addressed by the tripartite committee. This one is a delay tactic by the Federal Government and it will not work.” ULC President Joe Ajaero said it was not the duty of the Federal Government to know how the states or private sector would implement the minimum wage.

“Federal Government should allow the labour union in each state to discuss with their respective state government on how to start the implementation”, Ajaero said.

The labour leaders explained that Federal Government is expected to transmit the new national minimum wage bill to the National Assembly on or before December 31, 2018.

They noted that the Federal Government is planning to set up a high-powered technical committee, which is alien to the tripartite process and International Labor Organisation (ILO) convention on national minimum wage mechanism.

They urged workers to be vigilant and prepared to campaign and vote against candidates and political parties, who were not supportive of the implementations of the new minimum wage.

As for the TUC President, Bobboi Kaigama, he said if government fails to transmit the bill to the National Assembly for implementation on or before December 31, labour will re-open the suspended strike.

“Organised Labour will not guarantee industrial peace and harmony, if after December 31 2018, the draft bill is not transmitted to the National Assembly,” he said.

Politics / Jonathan, SGF, Fasanmi, Others Greet Buhari At 76 by Olawaleyy036(m): 6:20am On Dec 17, 2018
FORMER President Goodluck Jonathan, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha, Afenifere leader Senator Ayo Fasanmi and Voice of Nigeria (VON) Director-General Osita Okechukwu have congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari on his 76th birthday anniversary.

They spoke yesterday in their different goodwill messages.

Jonathan, in a personally signed message, thanked God for blessing Buhari with the grace of a long life.

He noted that the President has contributed so much to Nigeria’s growth, having served the nation in different capacities, and always giving his best whenever he is called upon to serve.

The ex-president said: “Yours has been a life of great service to our dear nation, having served as a brave soldier, governor, Minister of Petroleum, Head of State and now President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”Jonathan, who also highlighted Buhari’s patriotism and deep commitment to Nigeria’s growth, prayed to God to grant the President good health and more productive years.”

He added: “I join you, your family, well-wishers and fellow Nigerians to give thanks to Almighty God for the gift of a long life.

“I wish you good health and more productive years, as you continue to lend your skills and energy to the task of building a Nigeria of our dreams.” he said

Mustapha, in his message, said: “Consistency. This is the hallmark of a great leader. You say what you ‘ll do. And you do exactly as you’ve said.

“You have matched your consistency with good vision. You have said that Nigeria, under your watch, will be great. Like the great leader you’ve always been, you are leading the charge from the front in spite of grave distractions and gang-ups. We, your followers, are proud to join you to build a united and prosperous Nigeria.

“As you attain the 76th year landmark, we pray that your strength be renewed. When the job is done, posterity will know that President Buhari did his best for Nigeria the way only a true patriot could have.

“Happy birthday, Mr. President.”

Fasanmi prayed God to grant the President good health and wisdom in his strive to take Nigeria to the next level.

The statement reads: “As our great leader Awo taught us, tough time do not last, but tough people do. You have come, you have seen and by the grace of God you will conquer. As we look forward for your re-election in February, 2019, God will grant you the strength and wisdom to lead Nigeria to the promise land. I wish you many happy returns.”

Okechukwu saluted former military president Gen. Ibrahim Babangida for vindicating Buhari’s disciples on his laudable achievements since assumption of office in May 2015.

Okechukwu, while reacting to IBB’s birthday statement to Buhari on his 76th birthday, said he and others were in the same league with IBB that Buhari’s administration has achieved tremendous success in war against corruption, terrorism and other forms of insurgency, as well as bringing the country out of economic recession.

The VON boss, who is an ardent supporter of Buhari, also noted that Buhari has embarked on massive growth of critical infrastructure and revolution in agriculture sector towards self-sufficiency in food production.

Politics / 2019: APC Fumes As PDP Alleges Plot To Rig Election by Olawaleyy036(m): 6:10am On Dec 17, 2018
Democratic Party (PDP) alleged yesterday.

Its proof: President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to constitute a campaign council or develop a clear-cut campaign blueprint 61 days to the election.
The main opposition party said Mr. President and his All Progressives Congress (APC) failed to set up a campaign structure because they were banking on plots to manipulate the electoral process.

The APC dismissed the PDP’s allegation, saying it was surprised that rather than face issues, the opposition party was more interested in the APC’s campaign.
A statement by PDP spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan said it was clear that President Buhari had been overwhelmed.
The statement said: “All over the world, patriotic and obligated leaders, who are seeking (re-) elections, go to the electorate to canvass for votes with their messages and solutions. But our President and the APC have been busy procuring phony endorsements, harassing and intimidating opposition leaders, compromising the electoral body to create illegal voting centres, delaying election budgets and holding the process to ransom by refusing to sign amendments to the Electoral Act that eliminate avenues for rigging.

“President Buhari, who is already reputed to have wrecked our once robust economy, crippled our critical sectors, entrenched corruption at the high places, and whose administration has dangerously divided our nation with escalated violence and daily bloodletting, is seeking re-election with no solution to offer on any critical sector of our economy.
“Mr. President has nothing to offer on security; he has no message on education, agriculture, health, energy, power, employment, manufacturing and other key sectors, which he wrecked in the last three and half years.

“Instead of seeking ways to make amends, President Buhari, ostensibly out of frustration over his rejection and imminent electoral defeat in 2019, has arrogantly told Nigerians to be ready to face more suffering and hardship in the remaining part of his tenure.
“On our own part, our party and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, are working hard, campaigning across the country and offering solutions, for which we have continued to receive overwhelming support from majority of Nigerians, ahead of the 2019 general elections.
“It is instructive for President Buhari and APC to note that they cannot have their way, as Nigerians are determined in their resolve to resist any attempt by the APC to rig in this election”.

To the APC the allegations are “spurious”.
National Publicity Secretary Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu said it was amazing that rather than campaign on issues, the PDP was more interested whether the APC had started its campaign or not, adding that President Buhari started his campaign three and half years ago.
He said: “It is very amazing that two months into the election, PDP is still not presenting any alternative governance agenda before the people of this country. Sadly, the main opposition party appears at a loss as to how to face Nigerians, knowing they would have to explain why they so badly mismanaged this country at a period of surplus.

“Rather than focus on its own campaign, the only apparent concern of PDP is whether APC has flagged off its campaigns or not. Of course, APC will soon begin strategic engagements with the people of this country.
“Unlike PDP, our party as the governing party began our campaign immediately President Muhamnadu Buhari resumed office. We have spent the last three and half years carrying out massive infrastructural projects in all the 36 states of the country.

“We have invested heavily in social intervention programmes targeted at the ordinary Nigerians, at a scale never seen before in this country. The onslaught against corruption, the lasting solutions being put in place to provide security across our country, the transformation in the agricultural and the solid minerals sectors are the real campaigns that the APC government has embarked on since June 2015.

“We understand that PDP cannot campaign on issues as they have none to present. PDP’s recent attempts to speak to issues have ended in disgrace as it became obvious they base their projections and analyses on fallacious data. In effect, PDP is left with no other option than to resort to sophistry. They obviously need another trip to Dubai. Perhaps, they may try China this time, hoping they would at least get their figures right.”
Also reacting, the Buhari Media Organisation said the allegations of the PDP that the APC and the President were not interested in a free and fair election was laughable, adding that PDP was afraid of being defeated.
BMO Chairman Niyi Akinsaju told The Nation that it was curious that the PDP were making such “baseless” allegations, pointing out that there was nothing in the nation’s laws suggesting that there must be a new electoral act for every elections.

He asked the PDP to concentrate on its campaign rather than making allegations it has no evidence to substantiate.

Politics / Nigeria Owes Iocs $5.1b, Says NNPC by Olawaleyy036(m): 7:05am On Dec 14, 2018
NIGERIA indebtedness to International Oil Companies (IOCs) stood at $5.1 billion, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) told the Senate yesterday.

The $5.1 billion, according to the Corporation, was accumulated from the Joint Venture Cash Call (JVC) business arrangement the country has with IOCs on oil exploration.

But the NNPC denied allegation of mismanagement of $3.2 billion said to have been withdrawn from the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) account between 2015 till date.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of NNPC, Isiaka Abdulrasaq, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Gas explained how the debt was incurrininguired capital into it.”

Nigeria, he said, was “only collecting its equity share inform of revenues which made the country as at 2015, to have $6.8 billion unpaid capital into the venture.”

He further explained that “the present government in 2016, succeeded in getting 35 per cent discount from the unpaid capital amounting to $1.9 billion from the unpaid capital, making the country to still owe the IOCs $5.1 billion outstanding.”

On the alleged $3.2 billion reportedly withdrawn from the NLNG account by the NNPC within the last three years, the CFO insisted that there was no mismanagement in any of the withdrawals made.

He noted that based on available records with NNPC, only 13 withdrawals were made from the account amounting to $1.2 billion.

The official said that more than seven IOCs dealing with the NNPC have expressed concern about the continuity of their business operations as a result of bogus figures being bandied about withdrawals from the NLNG account.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Albert Bassey Akpan, asked the NNPC CFO to submit approving documents for all the withdrawals by Tuesday next week.

Akpan said: “We are not saying any money has been stolen. What we are doing is clarifying the processes of expenditures made from the account with a view to making management of the account more transparent and beneficial to Nigerians.”

Politics / 71 PDP Lawmakers Want Nigeria To Dump Presidential System by Olawaleyy036(m): 6:45am On Dec 14, 2018
SEVENTY-one members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives have condemned the presidential system of government

They described it as wasteful and inimical to the country’s socio-economic growth.

The lawmakers – Kingsley Chinda (Rivers) and 70 others – yesterday sponsored Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Alteration) Bill, 2018 to replace presidential system with parliamentary system.

The Bill scaled the first reading.

Chinda, who was represented at a news briefing by Nicolas Ossai and flanked by others, said it was time Nigeria dumped its present presidential system of government and emulate other countries that have taken to a more progressive parliamentary system of government.

He noted that studies showed that 169 countries during 1950-2003 made 123 changes in the form of government they practised within these periods.

To lend credence to their call, the lawmakers noted that among several factors, the level of instability and volatility of presidential systems makes it difficult to achieve sound economic objectives.

They also noted that over-centralisation of the government’s decisions that are prevalent in presidential systems obstructs economic growth when compared to the parliamentary or hybrid systems.

He said: “Our position in this legislation clearly point to compelling advantages of parliamentary systems of government to economic growth as well as its inherent efficiency in the conduct of government’s businesses.

“Studies have shown that countries run by presidential regimes consistently produce: lower output growth, higher and more volatile inflation and greater income inequality relative to those under parliamentary ones. Little wonder the rich continues to be richer while the poor get poorer and we have become the poverty capital of the world, Chinda said.

The lawmaker also mentioned slow passage of legislation, high unemployment, political and economic instability, as some of the challenges confronting the presidential system of government

“There are countless empirical records which show that output growths under presidential regimes are in zero points (negative), while output growth under Parliamentary systems clocks from one point and above (positive).

“In countries run by presidential systems, inflation is on average six percentage point higher than those under parliamentary regimes.

“Income inequalities under presidential systems are worse when compared with that of parliamentary or hybrid systems of government.

“Presidential regimes consistently producing less favourable macroeconomic outcomes, which prevails in a wide range of circumstances (the Nigerian example).

“Due to the excessive powers domiciled in one man under the presidential systems, consensus building that is often required for economic decision is always lacking.

The lawmakers refused to entertain questions, even when asked why they never found the system wanting for 16 years that their party was in government.

Politics / Osun Governorship Dispute: Tribunal Directs PDP, Adeleke To Open Case Monday by Olawaleyy036(m): 6:28am On Dec 14, 2018
The Osun State Governorship Election Tribunal has directed the petitioners – the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the last governorship election in the state, Senator Ademola Adeleke – to open their case on Monday by calling witnesses.

Tribunal Chairman, Justice Ibrahim Sirajo, gave the directive, following the prayer by the petitioners’ lawyer, Paul Ananaba (SAN), to allow the petitioners some time to prepare their witnesses and bring them from Osun State.

Ananaba made the request for an adjournment till Monday after the tribunal ruled yesterday on two applications by the second and third respondents.

The PDP and Adeleke are, by their petition, challenging the outcome of the election.

They are querying the victory of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Isiaka Oyetola, in the election.

Respondents to the petition are: the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC and Oyetola (first, second and third respondents).

Many people, including lawyers to the respondents who expected the petitioners to be eager to prove their case, expressed surprise at the request by Ananaba.

Respondents’ lawyers: Adesina Agbede (for the first), Abiodun Owonikoko (SAN) for the second, and Abiodun Layonu (SAN) for the third, were unhappy that Ananaba sought the postponement of hearing till Monday.

They applied for cost to, among others, compensate for the wasted time.

But, due to tribunal chairman’s intervention, to the effect that the case was adjourned till Thursday for the hearing of the applications by the second and third respondents, the respondents’ lawyers changed their minds and conceded to an adjournment.

At the commencement of proceedings around 10am on Thursday, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), who led Owonikoko for the second respondent, and Akin Olujinmi (SAN), who led Layonu for the third respondent, moved their applications, in which they prayed the tribunal to, among others, decline jurisdiction over the petition and dismiss it.

Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) led the petitioners’ legal team, which included Ananaba.

He also adopted the petitioners’ counter-argument.

The tribunal reconvened at noon and dismissed the applications by Olanipekun and Olujinmi on the grounds that the Fourth Alteration to the Constitution, as reflected in Section 285(cool, precludes an election tribunal from dismissing a petition without hearing it.

Justice Sirajo said the Fourth Alteration had altered the position of the law that existed when an election tribunal, some years ago, dismissed a petition by Jimi Agabje (now PDP’s governorship candidate in Lagos State) without hearing it.

The tribunal said under Section 285(cool of the Constitution, it was empowered to reserve ruling on all preliminary applications, including those challenging its jurisdiction, and deliver ruling at the point of judgment.

Justice Sirajo said the tribunal would stick to its earlier decision to reserve ruling on two applications argued by the respondents, which touched on the tribunal’s jurisdiction and the competence of the petition.

Adeleke, who had witnessed the proceedings till the ruling was delivered, did not return when the tribunal returned from its noon short break.

Olanipekun, Olujinmi and Ikpeazu also did not witness the afternoon proceedings.

At the commencement of proceedings after the one hour break, Justice Sirajo asked if the petitioners were ready to open their case. Ananaba, who took Ikpeazu’s place, said the petitioners needed time to get their witnesses.

He sought an adjournment to enable the petitioners bring their witnesses from Osun State.

Justice Sirajo granted Ananaba’s request and adjourned till Monday for the petitioners to open their case.
