If you thought the traffic was bad in the Nigeria, then spare a thought for the poor motorists who were left stranded in this monster jam dubbed the ‘carpocalypse’. Forget the bank holiday road ‘chaos’ we usually see in Britain, things can get a lot worse in China during their ‘Golden Week’ celebrations. Thousands of motorists near a toll station in Beijing were left going nowhere fast as people returned home at the end of the week-long National Day holiday. The nightmare bottleneck was reportedly caused by the combination of a new checkpoint, which sharply reduced the amount of lanes on the motorway from an estimated 50 to 20, and foggy weather. Drone footage captured the unbelievable traffic gridlock on one of the country’s busiest roads, the G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway. An estimated 750 million people, half the country’s population, were expected to travel on China’s rail and road networks across the seven-day holiday. Long tailbacks are a recurring theme when the Mid-Autumn festival begins, with major roads being transformed into enormous parking lots for frustrated motorists. In 2012, there was huge disruption reported when Chinese politicians granted free road travel by suspending motorway tolls. It was even worse in 2010, when traffic slowed to a snail’s pace along a major Beijing road for nine days. http://www.nigerianscoop.com/2015/10/see-worlds-worst-traffic-jam-as-it.html

A group of Russians are trying to construct the world’s first underwater church at Cape Fiolent, about 200 meters off the Crimean coast. Divers recently planted a large cross styled like a ship’s anchor at a depth of about 20 meters below sea level, marking the beginning of the ambitious project. The church is partly sponsored by a Russian motorcycle club called Night Wolves, believed to have close ties with President Putin. Co-funding the project is the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. Both groups hope that the church will attract more tourists to the newly annexed Crimean peninsula. “The underwater church will look like a church,” said Archimandrite Tikhon, who is also a diving enthusiast. “There will be icons inside – just like in a real church. Most probably they will be bas-reliefs of icons in stainless steel or stone.” He added that architects are working on the design and details of the structure. Meanwhile, the cross’s exact location will be mapped to allow visitors to find it easily. Before the summer ends, divers will also install a table and large concrete candle holders near the cross, for tourists to use. In the future, the construction will be used as a church and also as a museum of Crimean history. The site will include displays of ammunition and military ships, dating back to two of the largest military defense operations in the 1850s and 1940s. The church will be named after St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. http://www.nigerianscoop.com/2015/10/russia-begins-construction-of-worlds.html

Mashable has gone through the numbers and it's official: More people have died from trying to take selfies than from shark attacks this year. Last week, a 66-year-old Japanese tourist died and his companion injured when he fell down the stairs while attempting to take a selfie at the Taj Mahal. That brought the number of selfie-related deaths to 12, compared to 8 deaths caused by shark attacks in 2015, Mashable reports. Most of the selfie-related deaths have to do with falling. The next leading cause has to do with injuries sustained by being hit or injured by a moving vehicle. The problem isn't the photos per se. Rather, it has to do with the fact that the people taking the selfies are focused on their phones and not their surroundings. Selfies don't just put the photo-takers at risk: They can also cause harm to other people and animals. Earlier this month, hundreds of tourists descended upon a nesting ground for olive ridley turtles in Costa Rica. Local conservationists say the selfie-crazed crowd created such a distraction that many of the turtles returned to sea without laying their eggs. Back in 2014, organizers of the Tour de France asked the public to "respect the riders" after a few accidents occurred when spectators ran onto the road to take selfies. Selfies have become such an issue that the government of Russia has begun a "safe selfie" campaign. "Unfortunately we have noted recently that the number of accidents caused by lovers of self-photography is constantly increasing," Yelena Alexeyeva, an aide to Russia's interior minister, told Al Jazeera. "Since the beginning of the year we are talking about some hundred cases of injuries for sure. The problem really exists and leads to very unfortunate consequences." http://www.nigerianscoop.com/2015/09/selfies-have-killed-more-people-than.html
