Politics / Redefining A Ponzi Scheme From The Nigerian Lexicon by olempe(m): 7:27am On Dec 20, 2016 |
Ponzi schemes are the latest hits on the Nigerian air waves, as well as various version of reports hitting the stands almost every day since August 2015. This author would not see things from a constrained perspective, hence a vivid look at the phrase and it’s almost evergreen existence in our country Nigeria. Nigeria as a country is being run as a ponzi scheme since 1960. Civil servants work with their blood and are yet deprived of their monthly salaries; youths endure the rigour in the Nigerian education system, graduates to remain unemployed, the old citizens who retired from serving the country die of hunger because their entitlements were withheld by government for months,… The list goes on ad infinitum. This ponzi scheme bedevilling Nigeria is run by some faceless individuals called ‘cabals’. They sit on the accumulated wealth of the nation, earned from the toils and tax of Nigerians from the East, North, West and South. They dash away with ‘our’ money, building Eldorado for their generations yet unborn from it, taking food off our tables. While Nigerian citizens being the most enduring people on earth are adjusting to the decades of hardship under a locally groomed ponzi system, another scheme stormed the country, this time an externally grown scheme. It’s emergence attracted attacks from the Nigerian media from the on set, with predictions that could foreclose any business however legit. The latter scheme helped cushion the effects of the former, placing food back on tables of numerous families, a feat the former ponzi scheme failed to achieve in a long time. As the latter scheme thrived in Nigeria, the Media with an apparent mischievous intention shifted all it’s machinery to investigating the new ponzi scheme which was filling up a massive hole in the economy; with many hungry bloggers stemming up, it became a cheap means of getting publicity. Though some media outfits were objective, it was largely a run targeted at gaining wide public patronage which ignited a wild fire of panic to kill the scheme before it’s possible demise. The “Nigerian ponzi scheme”, a devil having existed for decades with a monumental hardship on the citizenry will definitely outlive it’s “Angelic” counterpart which has a history of empowering, and enriching it’s participants however short its breath and cloudy its operations. After the Nigerian media manages to kill the new scheme (assuming they succeed) and the citizens are left with the old rugged home grown ponzi system, it is hoped that the media will not relax in exposing the devil, call it the names it deserves, and push it to oblivion where it belongs. But I hope it won’t be a forlorn hope in this age where hard work, objectivism and investigative journalism is eluding the Nigerian media on a large scale. The point being made here is, Nigeria has taken so much blow that has shattered so many dreams, claimed so many lives, halted so many jobs, from a political system and Economic structure that is synonymous to a ponzi scheme. And if truly a ponzi scheme is worth fighting with all machinery and devotion like it’s playing out with MMM, the media should channel it’s resources to unravelling, exposing and ending the most dreadful ponzi scheme ever in history which robs Peter to pay Paul, robs the poor to enrich the wealthy class. It is a misplaced priority putting concerted effort on killing a cobra while a python is out of ambush killing with pleasure in broad daylight. |

Politics / Ondo Election: Rotimi Akeredolu In Comfortable Lead by olempe(m): 10:04pm On Nov 26, 2016 |
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barrister Rotimi Akeredolu, is in a clear lead in the Saturday governorship election in Ondo State. In what looks like a magic result that proves bookmakers wrong, Akeredolu won in the entire Akoko area of the state. He also won in Owo and Ose local governments and topped it with a surprise showing in all the local governments in Akure metropolis. Governor Segun Mimiko so far has saved Eyitayo Jegede of PDP from humiliating defeat by Akeredolu, as the governor helped the candidate of his party to win in all local governments in Ondo metropolis. But what Akeredolu lost in Mimiko's territory in Ondo town, he gained in Akure where he shocked the residents with astounding victory. In Akoko area of the state, Akeredolu shocked the combined forces of Olusegun Abraham and Senator Ajayi Borrofice who refused to work for the APC candidate. Akeredolu also swam in the waters of riverine areas of the state to snap critical votes from the stronghold of AD candidate, posting surprise wins in Idogbo, Ilutitun and several other areas hitherto considered no-go areas for the APC candidate. Top opposition leaders considered as threats to Akeredolu, including Gani Muhammed Ajowa, influential Hon JAF, Olusola Oke's deputy governorship candidate, Gani Dauda, Oke's campaign DG, Bola Ilori; Borrofice and Abraham, all lost to Akeredolu in their units. Except for areas that are contiguous to Jegede's family houses in Akure, Akeredolu took battle to the territory of the PDP's candidate and took critical votes home in triumph. With only few wards to go, the results expected from those wards are no longer a threat to Akeredolu's victory, more so that some of the wards are those where Akeredolu is also strong. By mid-night or early tomorrow morning, INEC should be in a position to announce Akeredolu as the winner of the election. http://www.nigerianscoop.com/2016/11/ondo-election-rotimi-akeredolu-in.html

Phones / Most Phones In Japan Are Waterproof As People Need To Use Them In The Bathroom by olempe(m): 11:23pm On Nov 21, 2016 |
Waterproof smartphones are becoming more common in Western markets, but they are hardly the norm. In Japan however, almost all phones are waterproof, and have been for nearly a decade now. According to statistics, 90% to 95% of phones in Japan are waterproof, because people need to be able to use them while they are showering. Japanese users are apparently so attached to their phones that they even bring them into the shower. Manufacturers were aware of this unusual habit early on and realized that in order to succeed in japan, they had to make their devices water resistant. The world’s first waterproof mobile phone, the Casio Canu 502S, was release in 2005, and was soon followed by a series of Fujitsu waterproof handhelds. Before long, every company looking to enter Japanese market had to make their devices waterproof. Even companies like LG or Samsung, which don’t generally make waterproof phones for the global market, had to adapt in order to become competitive in Japan. “In Japan, being waterproof is far more important than being able to remove your phone’s battery,” said Ken Hong, LG’s global communications director. “For a smaller Korean brand like LG, we need to be able to check all the key boxes to be as attractive as possible to Japanese consumers.” This is also why LG hasn’t even bothered launching its newest flagship, the modular G5 phone in the Asian country – it couldn’t make a waterproof phone with removable parts, so why bother. “In Japan, you can’t sell a phone if it’s not waterproof. About 90 to 95 percent of all phones sold now are already waterproof,” Panasonic executive Taro Itakura said in 2012. “Why? This is very unique — young Japanese women prefer to use their cellphones even when taking their showers, cellphones have become ‘must products’.” So rest easy, as long as you don’t take your mobile phone in the shower with you, you’re not as addicted to technology as you thought. http://www.nigerianscoop.com/2016/11/nearly-all-phones-in-japan-are.html

Webmasters / Wannabe Youtuber Confuses Adwords With Adsense, Ends Up Owing Google $120,000 by olempe(m): 8:14pm On Oct 06, 2016 |
A 12-year-old boy from Spain who dreamed of becoming a popular YouTube entertainer and making lots of money online, signed up for Google’s Adwords promotion program instead of its Adsense revenue program and racked up €100,000 in debt. Jose Javier, from the town of Torrevieja, in Spain’s Alicante province, dreamed of becoming rich and famous, like his favorite youtubers, so in August, he decided to set up his own YouTube account and register for Google’s lucrative revenue generation program. Only it appears he didn’t know anything about this digital tool, or even its exact name, because instead of opening an account with Adsense, he registered for Adwords, which instead of paying users ad revenue generated by traffic on their webpage or YouTube channel, charges them for promoting products or webpages on the internet. So instead of making money, he was spending it, and fast. In order to register for Adwords, the wannabe youtuber used a bank account that his parents had set up for him to encourage him to save money. Because of the way that the advertising campaigns were set up in Adwords, advertising fees started piling up very fast, and the €2,000 originally available in the bank account evaporated in a matter of days. When the balance started showing up in the red, bank employees called Javier’s parents and told them that Google was attempting to charge the account for tens of thousands of dollars. The boy’s mother, Inma Quesada, told bank employees to block the transactions, but because Javier’s Adwords account was still active, his debt kept rising. “I had no idea what my son had gotten himself into,” Quesada recently told Spanish newspaper El Pais. “He though he was making money, not spending it. He wanted to use the earnings to buy instruments for his band, and even told his friend that if they became rich, they would have a mansion.” As the bills from Google reached €100,000, Quesada couldn’t wrap her head around how her son could have spent all that money, considering he had been banned from using the computer after the bank called her to say his account was €22,000 in the red. Now Google was trying to charge him for an extra €78,000. It was then that a computer expert accessed Javier’s computer and found that he had been using Adwords instead of Adsense. In light of this revelation, the boy’s parents have contacted a lawyer to challenge Google in court. They are claiming that in spite of its stated age restrictions, Adwords only requested a bank account and his name in order to grant him access to an account. “My son did not know what he was doing,” Quesada told El Pais. Now he has become the most famous kid in school and his mother is on national television. I ask him if he understands the possible consequences of his actions, but he doesn’t appear to comprehend the situation, he thinks nothing is going to happen. We are more realistic.”Luckily for Jose Javier and his family, it would appear that they will not be needing a lawyer to deal with Google. Yesterday morning, the company released this statement regarding the case: “We have analyzed this case and we haven’t received payment from this particular user. We will proceed to cancel the user’s pending AdWords balance. Many online services, including Google AdWords, have age restrictions policies in place. We know how important it is to keep the family environment safe on the Internet. That’s why parents have our Safety Center available.” Credit: http://www.nigerianscoop.com/2016/10/how-wannabe-youtuber-confuses-adwords.html

Hello webmasters, For about two weeks now I realise that my Twitter account automatically tweet every content published a particular blog (247sounds.com). I first noticed this when I start getting different mentions and notifications concerning tweets I know nothing about and I felt my account has been hacked. I contacted the blog owner who claimed he saw it too but knew nothing about it. I have changed my password, still the tweets persists. My handle is @nigerianscoop. Please what can I do? |
