The Lagos State Government has said that the 3rd Mainland Bridge will be temporarily shut down for four days starting from midnight of August 23 to midnight of August 26, 2018 for Investigative Maintenance Test to be carried out.

The State’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Akinsanya, who disclosed this in a statement, said the decision was taken after due consultation with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.

The four-day closure, according to Akinsanya, will enable the contractors assess the true state of the bridge after which works would commence by the end of the year or early in 2019.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government had earlier announced plans to shut the bridge in July, but had to be shelved after due consultation with the State Government and wide deliberations with other stakeholders, who expressed concern about the indiscriminate parking of articulated vehicles on other alternative routes which would have adversely affected traffic.

Subsequently, a Joint Task Force set up to remove the articulated vehicles from the highway was able to achieve tremendous success.

Justifying the need for the closure, Akinsanya said: “The 3rd Mainland Bridge which was opened about 30 years ago by the then military government has had haphazard maintenance and repairs in the past which the present Federal Government is committed to correct by carrying out proper and continuous maintenance and repairs on it.”

Consequently, the State Government appealed for the cooperation, support and understanding of all motorists and residents, advising them to minimize non-essential travel and movements during the four-day closure.

Besides, Akinsanya said all traffic management agencies including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police, among others, have been mandated to ensure smooth flow of traffic on all the other alternative roads and traffic corridor across the metropolis to ensure free flow of traffic.

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Osun has released the timetable for the conduct of the state’s September 22 governorship election.

Presenting the timetable to newsmen on Thursday in Osogbo, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, the newly appointed Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner said election activities would commence on June 23 with the release of “Notice of Election’’ by INEC.

Agbaje said political parties would commence a public campaign on June 24 while candidates for elections and their parties would have the opportunities to obtain forms at INEC headquarters from June 25.

The REC said that party primaries and resolution of disputes arising from the primaries would hold from June 24 to July 23.

“The last day for withdrawal of candidate(s) and replacement of withdrawn candidate(s) by political parties would be August 8 while the last day for the submission of nomination forms would be August 22.

“The last day of campaigns will be September 20, while the election proper will hold on September 22 as provided in section 178 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended),’’ he said.

Agbaje said that as part of the commission’s roadmap for the election, Continuous Voter Registration had been extended at the 332 wards in the state from April 11 to April 16.

He said those who were newly captured would undergo Automatic Finger Identification System before their names would be ratified and added to the present list of registered voters in Osun.

The REC reassured that the PVC for registered voters in the state would be distributed before the governorship election on Sept. 22.

Agbaje said that 411,438 PVCs were yet to be collected in the state.

The convener of Concerned Nigerians group, Deji Adeyanju, has been arrested and detained on the order of the Inspector General of Police, according to a statement by the group.

The Police, had Thursday last week arrested and detained Adeyanju for participating in the #Elzakzaky daily sit-out at the Unity Fountain. He was released after public condemnation of the disruption of the sit-out by the police.

However, the civil rights activist was detained on Monday after he honoured the invitation from the office of the IGP.

“We condemn the illegal detention of our Convener, Deji Adeyanju by the Inspector General of Police. Deji Adeyanju honoured an invitation from the office of the inspector General of Police at about 10am this morning and was in the office of the IG of Police when the protesters at the Human Rights Commission were being harassed by officers and men of the Nigerian Police.

We hereby demand the immediate release of our Convener Deji Adeyanju and ask the Nigeria Police and the IG to respect the right to freedom of assembly as enshrined in our constitution,” the group said in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Theophilus Abu Agada on Monday.

The group said that detention of Adeyanju over the incident at the Human Rights Commission is another attempt by the government to intimidate individuals into submission.

“We call for justice for the IMN member that was brutally murdered today by the Nigerian police and the officers responsible for this unfortunate death be brought to justice. We are greatly displeased that our group and that of Islamic Movement of Nigeria, would in a space of one week be gruesomely attacked by the Nigerian Police for exercising our fundamental right to peacefully assembly as enshrined in our constitution.

Like we have always emphasized, the Nigerian Police should desist from infringing on our right to peaceful assembly and movement as guaranteed by the constitution. We are peaceful organization and our conducts since the inception of our daily sit-out has been very peaceful.

We equally condemn the reprisal attack by the Shiites that resulted in the destruction of properties of innocent Nigerians today. We enjoin the IMN group to always remain peaceful as they’ve always been since their leader was illegally detained. An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind,” the group added.

According to IMN, at least one person was killed and over 30 injured as protesting Shiites were dispersed by security operatives in Abuja on Monday

The protesters were demanding the release of the leader of IMN, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, who has been detained without trial for over two years

In December 2015, the Nigerian Army raided the residence of El-Zakzaky in Zaria, seriously injured him, and killed hundreds of his followers; since then, he has remained under state detention in the nation's capital against court order that he should be released and compensated by the government.

A 45-year-old man identified as Bolaji Ajasa has appeared before a magistrate’s court in Okitipupa, Ondo State for attempting to touch a hawker, Ajoke Ibisanmi’s breast.



Ajasa is also standing trial on a charge of unlawful assault before Magistrate Banji Ayeomoni. According to the prosecutor, Inspector Zedekiah Orogbemi, the accused on February 21 assaulted the complainant by punching her at a construction site at new Ayeka in Okitipupa.



It was gathered that fracas ensued when the hawker refused Ajasa’s attempt to touch one of her breasts and other parts of her body.



Ajasa, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against him. The magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N30,000 and a surety in like sum. The case was adjourned until March 29, 2018 for further hearing.

Mrs Khadijat Jimoh, the Candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogunoloko Ward B Councillorship by-election in Oshodi Isolo Local Government, Lagos State was on Saturday declared the winner of the poll.

The Returning Officer, Mr Olusola Ibikunle, said that Jimoh polled 2,208 votes to defeat her opponent from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 343 votes.

Declaring the winner, Ibikunke said: “I Babayemisi Olusola Ibikunle hereby certify that I was the Ward Returning Officer for the election held on March 24, 2018 in Ward B Ogunoloko.

“The election was contested and the candidates received the following votes; Jimoh Omolola Khadijat Funke of the APC got 2,208 votes while Mebabu Obafemi Olalekan Samuel of PDP got 343 votes.

“By this, Jimoh O.K. Funke of APC is hereby declared the winner of the councillorship by-election of Ward B, Ogunoloko at Oshodi Isolo LGA.

“Having complied with the requirements of the law and scored the majority number of votes, the aforementioned person is hereby elected and returned”.

The PDP Ward Chairman, Mr Ayodele Ogunseyi, said that there was no reason to fight because both PDP and APC candidates were of the same family.

“It is just election, we are one family. It is a game, but the game has to be well played.

“If we look at the election, we know that it is not well conducted. At this point, there’s nothing one could do.

“When two people go to the field, one shall win, the other shall lose. It doesn’t mean that next time I will not win,” he said.

Also speaking, the APC Ogunoloko Ward Chairman, Mr Oluwaseyi Fatoki, commended the APC supporters for being victors, and the PDP for accepting defeat.

In his reaction, Mr Olusola Sokunle, representing Oshodi/Isolo Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, expressed satisfaction with the electoral process.

He said that he was happy with the peaceful conduct by the residents.

Sokunle, who urged the two candidates to embrace themselves after the election in the spirit of sportsmanship, advised the winner not to betray the confidence the people entrusted in her.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the by-election was held in Ward ‘B’ Ogunoloko in Osodi-Isolo Local Government Area following the death of the former councillor representing the ward.

A by-election was also held in Ward ‘B’, Dopemu in Agege Local Government Area of the state for the same reason. (NAN)

The presidency has said President Muhammadu Buhari would continue to keep his intentions regarding the 2019 general elections close to his chest for now because those opposed to his re-election could exploit his declaration to sabotage the country.

Femi Adesina, spokesperson for the President said the president declaring his ambition about a year to the next election would only give such saboteurs a lot of time to sabotage the country economically and politically, among others.

“You know the peculiarity of Nigeria, particularly now. If the president speaks too early, it’s a problem. There is a lot of sabotage in the country.

“You have also heard so many have said, ‘don’t run,’ because they know that if the president runs, other people would just run away because they don’t have the foggiest chance in hell of beating him. So, they want to discourage him from running.

“Now, if he tells you, ‘I’m going to run,’ and elections are still one year away, it gives them one year to sabotage the entire country from all fronts – politically, socially, economically – they would throw everything at him just to dissuade him from running.

“So, when you know that, why then speak early? I think it makes a lot of sense for you to keep things close to your chest till it is time for you to then say, ‘ok, I’m running’ by which time they can do less damage,” he explained.

Adesina also said the president’s intention for his scheduled visit to Rivers State was to condole with the families of victims of various killings in the state.

He was reacting to claim by Governor Nyesom Wike that the state was crisis-free and hence, there was no need for the scheduled visit by the President.

“If he (Wike) doesn’t understand, the rest of the country understands. We understand. Other Nigerians understand. Even people in Rivers State understand because on New Year’s Day, a minimum of 24 people were killed in Omoku.

“So, is that not a crisis? And can you count the number of people that have been beheaded in Rivers State in recent times?

“People were killed and heads cut off and the assailants went away with the heads. So, can anybody say that there is no security issue in that kind of place?

“It’s left to the governor, he’s the chief security officer. If he says there’s no security crisis in his state, good luck to him.

“But the president is visiting so that he can condole with people who lost their loved ones, 24 people minimum, were killed in Omoku.



“So, those people are the reason. Those people and the many beheaded; relations of those beheaded and their heads taken away are the reason the president is visiting the state,” he explained

A 40-year-old woman was arrested on Monday, 12 March at 9.15am for allegedly selling drugs to primary school learners, after some of them who had bought drugs from her before told police where they got the substances from, Krugersdorp News reports.

This all happened shortly after the principal of the primary school called the police to complain about unruly behaviour, alcohol and drug abuse, absconding and bullying in his school.

The police deployed their Social Crime Unit to the school to get to the bottom of the problem and the members addressed the learners on the relevant social issues.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police, who confirmed the incident said that a few learners were identified as problematic and brought to the attention of the police.

“During interaction with the police, the learners opened up and provided information. The information was followed up and led to the arrest of the suspect,” said Sibiya.


They found 17 plastic packs of dagga and five Mandrax tablets in the woman’s possession.

A case docket of dealing in and possession of drugs and dagga was opened at Kagiso Police Station and she is expected to appear in court soon.

An 11-year-old house help, who allegedly killed a five-year-old boy by stabbing and strangulation, appeared on Friday, in an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused was brought before the court on a charge for murder.

Her plea was not taken.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye-Nwachukwu ordered that the accused be taken to Girl’s Correctional Home in Idi Araba.

Earlier, Inspector Chinalu Uwadione told the court that the accused had committed the offence on March 10, at 6.30 pm, at Plot 702, Road 255, Abule-Ado, Festac.

He said that the accused had strangled five-year-old Chikaso Amazu under her care with a leather belt before stabbing him with a curtain rod on his private part which resulted in his death.

The offences contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The case has been adjourned until April 18 pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP’s).

The Police in Borno on Thursday said they have uncovered plans by Boko Haram insurgents to carry out bomb attacks in Maiduguri metropolis.

The command advised residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons or objects to security agencies.

Mr Ahmed Bello, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, said in a statement issued in Maiduguri that the insurgents’ plan to attack soft targets and crowded areas.

Bello said that the insurgents’ planned to coordinate Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) borne vehicles to hit their targets, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

“The Borno State Police Command in collaboration with Operation Lafiya Dole’s high command wish to draw the attention of members of the public that information at the disposal of the theatre command reveals that dislodged and rampaging Boko Haram terrorists have concluded arrangements to attack parts of Maiduguri metropolis notably, populated and crowded areas to maximize casualty through the use of vehicles fully primed with IEDs.

“Consequently, security forces have adequately deployed resources to counter and frustrate this evil plan of the heartless terrorists.

“The command, therefore, wish to call on the people to promptly alert security personnel of any suspected persons, movement, vehicles and objects.

“Be rest assured that such information and informants would be treated with utmost confidentiality,” he said.

Bello reiterated the commitments of the theatre command and other security agencies to protect lives and property.
