Politics / 10 Suspects Arrested For Allegedly Killing Policeman In Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos by olokeded: 6:35pm On Sep 05, 2018
Ten suspected killers of one Sgt. Collins Isiabo at Ifako-Ijaye area of Lagos State had been arrested by the officers of the state police command, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Edgal, confirmed the arrest to newsmen on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, a police patrol team was attacked by an irate mob at College Road, Ifako Ijaiye in Ogba, Lagos State.

During the attack, Sgt. Isiabo with service No. 260326 was attacked and killed while the police patrol vehicle conveying the team was also vandalised by the rampaging mob.

Edgal said that the incident was shocking to the command because it had a good working relationship with the community.

“I assured Lagiosians then that I would leave no stone unturned in unravelling the suspects.

“Today, I am happy to announce that 10 key suspects had been arrested.

“Among the suspects is their herbalist who helped to extract a bullet from the principal suspect following the injury he sustained while struggling to take the deceased policeman’s rifle.

“The principal suspect had been traced to a town in Ondo State and will be arrested very soon.

“One of the suspects revealed to the police during interrogation that they were members of the dreaded “Aiye’’ cult.

“Investigation also revealed that the suspects were returning from where they had gone to bury a member whom they thought had been killed by the police and decided to attack the patrol team.

“However, their member had died when he sighted the police and tried to escape. He missed his step and fatally injured himself,” he said.

The CP added that investigation into the case was ongoing with a view to arresting other suspects still at large.

He also appealed to the youth and Lagosians to always seek redress from platforms provided by the command.

He said that several people had used the platforms to seek redress and got justice.

“This is a civilised society and we will not allow people to get involved in jungle justice,” the CP advised.

Properties / Court Restrains IGP, Others From Arresting 1004 Apartments Landlords by olokeded: 2:59pm On Sep 04, 2018
An Igbosere High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the police not to carry out any act that would infringe on the fundamental rights of some officers of 1004 apartments in Victoria Island.

The vacation judge, Justice Idowu Alakija, made the exparte order after listening to an application for an interim injunction sought by five executive officers of 1004 Home Owners and Residents Association (HORA), Victoria Island, Lagos.

The applicants — Abiola Oguniyi, Edet Essien, Joy Okara, Peace Itaribo and Olanrewaju Olaniyi — had through their counsel, Mr Promise Asikpo and Joel Nyot – sought to restrain the policefrom further harassing and detaining them unlawfully.

Joined with the Ispector-General of Police (IGP) were three other respondents, Akinlosi Oyelokun, Insp. Yusuf Danladi and Police Service Commission.

Justice Alakija, after listening to the applicant, granted all the orders.

“Upon hearing the applicants in this case, I am convinced that all the respondents have been served with the originating processes and the motion for Interlocutory injunction.

“It is hereby ordered that the parties maintain status quo and the respondent are not to carry out any act that shall infringe on the fundamental rights of the applicants pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice,” Alakija said.

She, however, asked that the file be returned to the registry and the case file forwarded to Justice Owolabi Dabiri for hearing of the interlocutory injunction.

Earlier, the applicants’ counsel, Asikpo informed the court that all the respondents have been served with the notice of Application for the Enforcement of Fundamental Rights and the Motion on Notice for an Interlocutory Injunction.

He said that the first respondent, Oyelokun, who was evading service, had been served by substituted service pursuant to the order of the court made on Aug. 28.

He, however, told the court that there was an imminent threat by the police to violate the fundamental rights of the applicants.

He said the applicants were first arrested in November 2017 and in August this year, adding that it took a lot of efforts before the applicants were released.

He, however, urged the court to restrain the respondents from inviting, interrogating, harassing, arresting, detaining or in any manner infringing the fundamental rights of the applicants pending the hearing and determination of the Interlocutory Injunction.

Asikpo, also urged the court in the alternative to order parties to maintain status quo pending the hearing and determination of the Interlocutory Injunction.

He said that the court was empowered by law to protect the applicants against the imminent abuse from the respondents, however, urging the court to grant the prayers of the applicants in the interest of justice.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that residents of 1004 Estate had petitioned the I-G over unlawful arrest and detention of some occupants by policemen claiming to be from I-GP Special Tactical Squad.

In the petition, HORA alleged that five officials were unlawfully assaulted and detained for two days.

The association, comprising about 6,000 residents, alleged that the unlawful harassment was instigated by a tenant, Mr Akinlosi Oyelokun, whose apartment was disconnected over alleged two years unpaid service charge and electricity theft.

According to the 1004 residents, armed policemen from Force Headquarters, led by Insp. Danladi Idah Yusuf, invaded the association’s secretariat and whisked away three staff to the Bar Beach Police Station on “order from above’’.

Those initially arrested are: Mrs Joy Okara (HORA Finance Manager), Mr Peace Itaribo (Accounts Officer) and Mr Olanrewaju Olaniyi (Vending Officer) and detained overnight at the Adeniji Adele Police facility Lagos Island.

The association’s executives who attempted to secure their bails were also arrested and ended up behind bars for two days along with the staff, the petition said.

The residents expressed dismay that a tenant owing service charge arrears and facing allegations of hacking and electricity theft involving bypass of smart meter could simply use his connection with police to harass innocent citizens.

Capt. Shina Akinfenwa, Chairman of 1004 HORA, then appealed to the IG- to urgently address the matter in order to save his high office from dishonour and the residents from continued harassment.

Before the court granted the reliefs sought by counsel to HORA, Akinlosi told NAN on telephone that since investigations into his petition were ongoing he had no comment to make.

Travel / Flood Kills Soldier, 9 Others In Kebbi by olokeded: 2:52pm On Sep 04, 2018
Kebbi Government on Tuesday confirmed the death of a soldier and nine others in two separate flood disasters across the state.

A statement by Abubakar Dakingari, Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Atiku Bagudu issued in Birnin Kebbi, said the flood occurred in two local government areas on Thursday.

He listed the communities affected as Kanya village in Danko Wasagu Local Government and Mahuta in Fakai Local Government.

“A soldier and nine other people were killed by heavy flood as a result of incessant rainfall in the state; the soldier was said to have died while trying to rescue a woman from the flood.’’

Dakingari said although the body of the woman was recovered, that of the soldier had been washed away, but effort was on to recover the corpse.

He added that the remains of five victims were recovered at Kanya and three in Mahuta.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Bagudu had earlier visited the communities to commiserate with the victims.

At Kanya, the village Head, Alhaji Isah Dan Hassan, told the governor that many houses, livestock and farmlands were destroyed by the flood.

He urged government to construct emergency bridge and provide canoes for the immediate evacuation of residents to safer areas.

During the visit, Bagudu also made a stop over at Waje bridge, where a young man was reported to have jumped to his death.

At Fakai, Chairman of the local government, Musa Jarma, said 48 houses and a bridge linking the town to other parts of the state were destroyed.

Politics / Why Buhari Declined Assent To Electoral Bill – Presidency by olokeded: 6:59pm On Sep 03, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has declined assent to Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2018 due to “some drafting issues” that remain unaddressed following the prior revisions to the Bill.

Sen. Ita Enang, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), made this known in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

The presidential aide said that already, the president had communicated his position to the Senate and the House of Representatives on Aug. 30.

“Mr President is declining assent to the Electoral Amendment Bill due to some drafting issues that remain unaddressed following the prior revisions to the Bill.

“Mr President invites the Senate and House of Representatives to address these issues as quickly as possible so that he may grant assent to the Electoral Amendment Bill.’’

Enang listed the outstanding issues resolved to include a cross referencing error in the proposed amendment to Section 18 of the Bill.

“The appropriate amendment is to substitute the existing sub-section (2) with the proposed subsection (1A), while the proposed sub-section (1B) is the new sub-section (2A).

‘’The proposed amendment to include a new Section 87 (14) which stipulates a specific period within which political party primaries are required to be held.

“It has the unintended consequence of leaving INEC with only nine days to collate and compile lists of candidates and political parties as well manage the primaries of 91 political parties for the various elections.”

He explained that the Electoral Amendment Bill did not amend sections 31, 34 and 85 which stipulated times for the submission of lists of candidates, publication of lists of candidates and notice of convention, congresses for nominating candidates for elections.

“For clarity, may I provide some details of the provisions referenced; Clause 87 (14) states.

“The dates for the primaries shall not be earlier than 120 days and not later than 90 days before the date of elections to the offices.

“The Electoral Act 2010 referred to herein states in Section 31: that every Political Party shall not later than 60 days before the date appointed for a general election, submit to the commission the list of candidates the party proposes to sponsor at the elections.

“Section 34: That the Commission shall at least 30 days before the day of the election publish a statement of the full names and addresses of all candidates standing nominated.

“Section 85 (1):That a Political Party shall give the Commission at least 21 days notice of any convention, congress etc., for electing members of its executive committees or nominating candidates for any of the elective offices.’’

According to him, for the avoidance of doubt, neither the Constitution nor any written law allows a President or a Governor to whom a bill is forwarded by the legislature to edit, correct, amend or in any manner alter the provisions of any such bill to reflect appropriate intent before assenting to same.

“He is to assent in the manner it is or to withhold assent.

He further disclosed that Buhari had communicated his action to the National Assembly on the underlisted Bills earlier transmitted: National Agricultural Seeds Council Bill, 2018; and the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2017.

The president’s action on the Chartered Institute of Entrepreneurship (Establishment) Bill, 2018, and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (Amendment) Bill, 2017, were also communicated to both chambers of the assembly.

Others are the Subsidiary Legislation (Legislative Scrutiny) Bill, 2018; National Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (Establishment) Bill, 2018, and National Research and Innovation Council (Establishment) Bill, 2017.

Politics / Balarabe Musa Quits Active Politics by olokeded: 4:49pm On Aug 31, 2018
Former Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa on Friday said he will no longer participate in active politics due to failing health and old age.
Musa told the 54th National Executive Committee Meeting of the People Redemption Party (PRP) holding in Kaduna that he has consequently opted not to seek for the post of the National Chairman of the party.

“In this regard, it is appropriate to inform members that this will be the last time that I will personally be chairing NEC as our party’s National Chairman.
“Due to declining energy and failing health, it has become necessary for me to vacate the seat for young and fresher blood.
“But not just young and fresher blood but qualitatively,
demonstratively younger and fresher blood more robustly and combatively committed to all the ideals our party, the PRP has always stood for.
“I shall, however, always remain available for party assignments within the limits of my fading energy and failing health.”

Musa thanked the party members for their support and urged them to remain resolute in promoting the ideals of the party, which is centered on the emancipation of the downtrodden.
The NEC meeting is expected to ratify the party’s news constitution, zoning formula, guidelines for candidates, among other issues.

Politics / 2019: Lamido Urges PDP To Reward Loyal Members by olokeded: 8:16pm On Aug 30, 2018
Alhaji Sule Lamido, former Jigawa governor and PDP presidential aspirant, has advised the party to reward faithful members while deciding flag bearers ahead of 2019 general election.

Lamido gave the advice on Thursday in Lafia when he met with the Nasarawa State Working Committee of the party.

“I am a foundation member of the party and has never left the fold since its formation in 1999.

“I have served the party and the country in various capacities which has prepared me for the challenges of governing Nigeria,” he said.

Lamido expressed confidence that he would defeat President Muhammad Buhari, saying that he would do better than the incumbent president.

He praised the courage of the All Progressives Congress (APC) members who recently defected to the PDP, and condemned the intimidation and character assassination that had trailed them since they defected.

The aspirant called for a more sincere approach to the war against corruption, and accused the Federal Government of “protecting criminals that had defected to the ruling the party”.

“Efforts to rid Nigeria of corrupt elements must be fought fairly; it is not right to declare someone a criminal today only to change position tomorrow and shield him because he has defected to the ruling party,” he said.

Responding, Mr Francis Orugu, PDP Chairman in the state, commended the aspirant for his courage and resilience “in spite of intimidation and harassment overt the years”.

He assured him that delegates from the state would vote for a person that would not let Nigerians down.

Crime / Ogun Police Arrest Pastor, One Other, Over Ritual Killing by olokeded: 6:16pm On Aug 29, 2018
The police in Ogun have arrested a pastor and one other over alleged killing of a woman simply identified as Iya Aanu .

Parading the suspects at the Ijoko scene of the incident on Wednesday, Ogun Police Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu, said that the offences committed bordered on conspiracy, murder and ritualism.

Iliyasu explained that on Aug. 10, a complaint was lodged at Agbado Police Divisional headquarters by district head of Igbore Robiyan in Ifo Local Government Area of the state.

The commissioner said the district head reported that a headless decomposing body of a woman was found in an uncompleted building within the community

He said that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Agbado, Olatunji Omonijo, was consequently ordered to unravel the mystery behind the killing of the woman.

“The DPO and his detectives embarked on technical intelligence based investigation which led to the apprehension of the pastor and his accomplice.

” On interrogation , the pastor, who also claimed to be a prophet in a church, confessed that the deceased was his lover and that they had dated for two years .

“On that fateful day the deceased came to visit him as usual and after they made love, the woman was relaxing when he hit her head with a pestle-like wood.

” He later cut off her head and the two hands before he threw the remains into the uncompleted building behind his residence.

“The severed head and two hands of the victim were buried at the back of Lion of Judah Church of Christ situated at Robiyan Avenue, belonging to the pastor,” the CP said.

Iliyasu described the incident as wickedness at its peak and height of man’s inhumanity to man .

He assured members of the public that the perpetrators of the dastardly act would face the full wrath of the law , saying they would soon be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction .

The pastor later told newsmen that the woman was his lover and that he didn’t know what came over him to have perpetrated the act.

He corroborated that his relationship with the woman had been on for over two years.

Crime / Man Docked For Illegal Electricity Connection by olokeded: 3:27pm On Aug 29, 2018
A 33-year-old man, Santos Adeshola, who allegedly tampered with the property of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), was on Wednesday brought before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The accused is being tried for illegal re-connection of public power supply.

The accused, according to the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, committed the offence sometime in June at Zamba Street,
Itire in Surulere area of Lagos.

Osayande alleged that the accused unlawfully reconnected his house to the public power supply after it was disconnected by some EKEDC officials.

She said when the company found out that the accused had illegally reconnected the wires to the electricity pole, the case was reported to the police.

“The line was again disconnected from the pole and they were arrested for questioning.”

The offence contravened Section 1 (10) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act of 1983.

The accused pleaded not guilty.

Politics / INEC Adjusts 2019 Elections Budget To N143bn by olokeded: 7:30pm On Aug 28, 2018
The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has adjusted its budget for 2019 elections from N189 billion to N143 billion in compliance with directive from the National Assembly.

The Chairman of the National Assembly Joint Committee on INEC, Sen. Suleiman Nazif, made this known to newsmen after a meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, saying that INEC had effected the changes.

He said that the commission submitted a new budget reflecting N143 billion as originally requested by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Nazif disclosed that a sub-committee had been set up to look at the proposal and to point out any area of infraction to the committee, adding that the committee was mandated to complete its assignment on Aug. 29.

The National Assembly Joint Committee on INEC had on Monday, recommended N143 billion for approval for the commission’s preparation ahead of the 2019 general elections.

This is in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s request on July 11 when he sought the legislators’ approval of N242 billion for the elections.

Specifically, he said that N164.10 billion of the funds was urgently needed to enable INEC to commence preparations for the elections, while the balance of N78.34 billon would be provided for in 2019 Budget.

The President had in his letter of request explained that the urgently needed N164 billion would be allocated as follows: INEC, N143.51 billion; Office of National Security Adviser, N3.86 billion and Department of State Services (DSS), N2.90 billion.

Others are Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, N1.85 billion; Nigeria Police Force, N11.46 billion and Nigeria Immigration Service, N530.1million.

The Senate Committee on INEC had on Aug. 16, queried the commission for presenting a budgetary proposal of N189 billion for the elections, saying it was at variance with the president’s for the polls.

This was because, though Buhari had in his letter requested for N189 billion for the 2019 elections, he said that N143 billion was urgently needed by INEC to begin preparations for the polls.

The money is expected to be vired from the 2018 Budget, especially from the N587 billion, which the president said was inserted by the lawmakers into the budget, raising it from N8.6 trillion to 9.12 trillion.

Politics / PDP Cannot Challenge Buhari To Debate On Good Governance – APC by olokeded: 8:58am On Aug 28, 2018
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) lacks the moral right to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari to a debate on good governance.

The party made this known in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Yekini Nabena, on Monday in Abuja, describing the challenge by the PDP as laughable and incredible.

The PDP had recently challenged Buhari to a debate on good governance ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The APC said that as a party synonymous with impunity, institutionalised corruption, non-remittance of 20 billion dollars oil revenue, among others, the PDP was not in a position to debate on good governance.

“A party whose administration placed the economy on life-support through its voodoo economics and fiscal recklessness, the PDP cannot be in a position to debate on good governance.

“We view this request by the PDP as another laughable example of its selective amnesia on the 16 years of locust it wrecked on Nigeria during its defunct rule.

“Perhaps the PDP needs to be reminded of the reason why Nigerians voted it out unanimously in 2015 to give way to a progressive administration,” it said.

According to the party, it is re-building the country in all facets, from the foundation since it came into power in 2015.

It added that the PDP in its desperation to position itself as the 2019 general election approached, could not hoodwink Nigerians on who they truly were.

Politics / Buhari Commends 2 Security Men For Returning Bag Of Dollars by olokeded: 10:37pm On Aug 22, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has asked Nigerians to emulate two security men who returned a handbag filled with valuables, including dollars, forgotten at the Murtala Muhammed Airport by an American returnee.

He said such conduct reflects the new Nigeria that we all desire.

A Lagos-based medical doctor, Banji Oyegbami, who runs Betta Hospital in Agege, had met a family returning from America at the airport on August 18. In the process of loading their luggage into his car, the handbag of the returnee’s wife fell, unknown to anyone.

It was not until 90 minutes later that an officer of Halogen Securities, on duty at the airport, called the couple, to come for the retrieved bag.

When the bag was eventually collected, the contents, including a handsome amount of American dollars, phone, wrist watch, and other valuables were intact. The grateful couple offered a generous gift, but Messrs Francis Emepueaku and Achi Daniel, declined, saying they were merely doing their duties.

President Buhari said that despite the scoffing of a minority number, Nigeria is resolutely on the road to a new dawn.

“Honesty remains the best policy. We must exhibit such behaviour in whatever position we find ourselves, whether high or low,” he submits.

“The security men could have chosen to behave differently, following the self-serving principle of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them.’ But they have chosen to be examples of good, honest Nigerians. I commend their conduct to the rest of the country.”

The President urged Nigerians to bring out the best in themselves at all times, noting that with such minds, they can never be hoodwinked again by those who seek power for selfish and dubious reasons, and return the country to an inglorious past.

“Nigeria will no longer be a byword for corruption and plundering of public resources. That is the path we have chosen to take, and our country will eventually get to a new shore,” President Buhari affirmed.

Politics / Why Nigeria Still Needs Buhari – Tinubu by olokeded: 2:31pm On Aug 22, 2018
The National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, says the country need a focused and determined leader like President Muhammadu Buhari to gradually re-engineer the economy for the benefit of all.

Tinubu who noted that Buhari is the foundation for re-engineering and reinvigorating Nigeria’s economy for a better future made the remark in Lagos on Wednesday during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration

The APC leader reiterated that a strong foundation mattered in nation building.

He said that building such foundation required patience, perseverance and commitment as it often presented difficulties for the people.

” Economic development and the future of the youth are crucial in the growth of any nation and we are taking care of that.

”You have to re-grow the economy, re-engineer it from bottom-up, during that process, it is always very difficult for ordinary people.

“They bear the brunt of the economic difficulties because they are in the lower cadre of the society.

”You can only use and depend on what you have and if you manage to use resources carefully, yes, you end up enjoying a multiple development in the country and that is why I always emphasise that foundation matters.

”Foundation is crucially important. I have listened to the people. I have been in contact with them at the grassroots.

”Even this house is not spared too, from demands from the poor and the needy, but without re-growing the economy, re-tooling, re-engineering the economy, we will not have anything.

”We ate the seed of growth for breakfast. Therefore, there is nothing for lunch or dinner. Nothing to harvest, that is what we talk about looters.

”But it will not take a magical touch to bring it to reality, It takes patience and perseverance. Three years is not enough time to for retouching, redevelopment and re-engineering the country.

”There is a lot of hope, there is a lot of expectation, but when the treasury was empty, when the salaries were outstanding, when the quality of life is low, what will you do?

”We have oil, they didn’t save money and we have not diversified the economy. We have eaten our dinner for breakfast, nothing in the kitchen.

“There is no magic about it. It takes dedication, commitment and perseverance.

“Yes, we might not be communicating effectively with the people but we are working to make things better, ” he said.

”Nigerians adopted democracy, we are going to live through this democratic government.

”We need a … President Buhari, to retool and re-engineer, that is what he is doing in the economy and he is doing it gradually, otherwise we don’t want it to fall apart again.

”Continuity, perseverance, and endurance, those are what we need. Our determination is progress for the country and for the people. We can’t go back.

”I am very proud of what I have done in Lagos to be where it is. We were meticulous, dedicated and focused and we lifted the spirits of our people and that is why it is important for Nigerians to be focused now, ” he said.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to make sacrifices, endure, tolerate and forgive one another in the spirit of Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

”When you pray for forgiveness, you must be able to give forgiveness if you think you deserve forgiveness.

”Can you ask God to give you what you cannot give to another fellow human being? That is simple, “Tinubu said.

Politics / Ngige: N50,000 NYSC Monthly Allowance Increase Is False. No Increment Yet by olokeded: 11:36am On Aug 22, 2018
Minister for Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has dismissed reports that the Federal Government was planning to increase the monthly allowance for youth corps members.

Rumours had been rife weeks ago that the Federal Government was planning to increase the monthly allowance from N19,800 to N50,000, but Ngige has said there’s no truth in it.

He said in a press briefing in Anambra that the Federal Government wouldn’t increase the allowance of corps members without first coming out with a minimum wage for the Nigerian workers.

“No recommendation has come to the Federal Executive Council on this. The NYSC pay is on the sliding scale; the same sliding scale with the national minimum wage except that there is a top up; what is called top up on the national minimum wage is to make for special transport allowance for members of the NYSC,” he said.

“That is why today, the national minimum wage is N18,000, and the top up for NYSC members is about N1,500 making it N19,500. This is what the Federal Government pays each corps member.

“For now, there is no figure before us as an increment and as a matter of fact, the last Federal Executive Council had mandated the Minister of Youths and Sports to liaise with the Director General of the NYSC so that he can be brought on board for us to work as a team,” the minister further stated.

Politics / EFCC To Arraign Senator Albert Bassey For Receiving 12 Cars Worth N254m As Gifts by olokeded: 11:45pm On Aug 20, 2018
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday filed charges at an Ikeja High Court against another serving senator, Albert Bassey, for allegedly receiving 12 cars as worth N254 million.

Bassey, 45, who is representing Akwa-Ibom North-East, received the vehicles between 2010 and 2014 from Olajide Omokore, a businessman, when he (Bassey) served as the Akwa-Ibom Commissioner for Finance.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EFCC has slammed a 14-count charge bordering on corruption on the duo.

Bassey is to face a seven-count charge of bordering on corruption as a public officer and for inviting bribes as a result of his own action.

On his part, Omokore is also facing a seven-count charge bordering on offering gratification to a public officer and giving bribe on account of the action of a public officer.

The duo as well as their counsel were, however, absent in court on Monday when the case was announced for mention at 4.05 pm on Monday, according to NAN.

Mrs Zainab Ettu, the prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, requested a new court date to enable the anti-graft commission arraign the senator and the businessman.

“We do not have the defendants in court today, though we had earlier anticipated that we would have them in court at a later date.

“We will be asking for a further date, most preferably, after vacation,” she said.

Responding, the vacation judge, Justice Obafemi Adamson noted that the case had not been assigned to a judge, making it difficult to adjourn the case after vacation.

The judge ordered that the case file should be sent to the Registry of the High Court for assignment to a judge, who will hear it.

According to the charge sheet, Bassey received the vehicles from Omokore over a five-year period (2010-2014) in Lagos.

Bassey received the bribes while serving as the Akwa-Ibom Commissioner for Finance and Chairman of the Akwa-Ibom State Inter-Ministerial Direct Labour Coordinating Committee (IMDLCC).

On May 10, 2010, Bassey also allegedly corruptly received a BMW X5 BP worth N50 million from Omokore in December 2012 and another Infinity QX 56 BP worth N45 million from him.

On November 2013, the serving senator received a Toyota Landcruiser V8 BP valued at N40 million and in March 2014, he received a Range Rover, also valued at N40 million from the businessman as well as in September 2014, another Toyota Hiace High Roof car valued at N27 million.

Others are Toyota Hiace High Roof car valued at N16 million and six units of Toyota Hilux vehicles valued at N36 million.

The anti-graft commission claimed that the car gifts were given to Bassey by Omokore in exchange for contracts from the Akwa-Ibom Government.

The offences, according to the EFCC, contravene Sections 63 (1)(a), 64 (1)(a) and 98(1), (a), (i) of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2011.

Crime / PHOTO: Man stabs Ekiti monarch to death by olokeded: 11:03pm On Aug 20, 2018
Odo-Oro-Ekiti, a community in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti, was on Monday thrown into mourning as its traditional ruler, Oba Gbadebo Ogunsakin, was stabbed to death.

Some residents, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the traditional ruler was stabbed with a knife by a man suspected to be insane after a meeting of the traditional council.

A resident, Mr Henry Olu, said the assailant was from the same royal family as the slain traditional ruler.

Olu said the assailant was earlier seen before the council meeting sitting on the throne and was chased away.

The monarch was stabbed by the assailant while he was attempting to enter his vehicle after the council meeting.

” All we heard was a cry for help from the traditional ruler’s driver shortly after the council meeting.

“On getting there, we saw our traditional ruler in a pool of his blood with a knife in the chest.

” We tried rushing him to the hospital, but Oba Ogunsakin gave up the ghost,” another resident, who does not want his name mentioned, said.

Some irate youths in the community took to the streets in search of the assailant who was said to have fled into the bush after the incident.

The youths mounted road blocks on major junctions leading into the community while the search lasted.

There was panic in the community, with its market deserted as the news of the incident filtered out.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ekiti, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview.

“It is true the incident actually happened and police men have moved in.

“The person alleged is of unsound mind and he actually escaped into the bush after committing the crime.

“ Our men are combing the bush to fish out the suspect.

” All I can say for now is that the suspect is within reach and will be put in custody,” he said.

The late Ogunsakin ascended the throne in 1986.
