Travel / 44 Nigerians And Ghanaians Die In Sahara Desert by olokeded: 7:00pm On Jun 01, 2017
Survivors say 44 people have died of thirst after their truck broke down in the Sahara Desert in northern Niger, the Red Cross has told the BBC.

The six survivors, all women, walked to a remote village and are being looked after in Dirkou, Niger, Red Cross official Lawal Taher said.

They say several children are among the dead.

The Ghanaians and Nigerians were trying to get to Libya, reports Nigerien news site Sahelien.

So far no-one has visited the site to identify the bodies, Mr Taher added.

The route from Niger to Libya is one of the main ways migrants reach North Africa before crossing the Mediterranean Sea to get to Europe.

Crossing the Sahara is one of the most perilous parts of the journey as migrants are crammed into pickup trucks often with only enough room for a few litres of water, reports Reuters news agency.

Authorities told Reuters that is it almost impossible to know how many have died in the vast and unpoliced Sahara.

Last June, the bodies of 34 migrants, including 20 children, were found in the Sahara Desert near Niger's border with Algeria.

It appeared they had died of thirst after being abandoned by their smuggler, a government minister said at the time.

Investment / MMM Surprises Nigerians, Throws Party In Abuja by olokeded: 7:01pm On May 29, 2017
MMM-Nigeria, a group for mutual financial aid and donations on Monday organised a green party show in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to celebrate Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the party, which held at the Millennium Park, was opened to members of the group and non-members alike.

Mr Seyi Bello, the President of Abuja Guiders Forum of the MMM-Nigeria said the gesture was part of solidarity by the group for Nigeria’s 18-years of uninterrupted democracy.

“This party is put together to celebrate our Democracy Day and since Nigeria’s flag is green-white-green, we decided to call it ‘green party’ as a mark of solidarity.

“We invited everyone to be a part of this event because friendship and unity is what this community of mutual help represents.

“As a community, we do not only provide help to our members, we also extend that to the larger society as part of our social responsibility,” he said.

Musicians, comedians and other entertainers in the territory performed at the event.

Bello explained that over three million Nigerians were members of the group.

He explained that contrary to some people’s opinion about the scheme, its a community of people providing financial help to each other on the principle of reciprocity and benevolence.

“That is what defines us as a community of people providing financial help to each other on the principle of reciprocity and benevolence.

“In MMM, there are no lenders and no debtors. One participant asks for help, another one helps.’’

He therefore called on leaders at all levels to deliver basic dividends of democracy to Nigerians, adding that the current recession was affecting ordinary Nigerians.

“As we celebrate democracy, let our leaders remember that we need change in all aspects of our lives,” he said.

Mavrodi Mondial Movement (MMM) is a Ponzi scheme, which was revived early this year after freezing participants’ accounts for a month in December 2016.

Politics / "I Had Never Met Tinubu When He Made Me Commissioner' - Osinbajo by olokeded: 8:24am On May 29, 2017
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, says he hadn't met former Lagos state governor, Bola Tinubu, before the latter made him the state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state during his administration between 1999 and 2007. Speaking at the gala night to celebrate Lagos at 50 over the weekend, Osinbajo said;

“I did not and I had never met Bola Tinubu before I was appointed commissioner and that says a lot about the kind of individual that he is. This is the kind of thinking that makes nations great; that is the kind of thinking that would make Nigeria great. A type of thinking that considers all of our diverse talents; a kind of thinking that does not allow parochialism; a kind of thinking that does not allow us to say anywhere belongs to only a set of people. That is when our country would be truly great.”

Crime / ‘I Have Raped 30 Women In Lagos- Suspect by olokeded: 8:12am On May 29, 2017
A 37-year-old armed robber the police described as notorious, Lanre Olowojobi, alias Pumpy, arrested at Mushin, Lagos, at the weekend by operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce, has narrated how he and his gang members robbed and raped their female victims.

Olowojobi, whose gang members the police said have been raining terror on Mushin, also admitted in his statement that he killed many of his victims for refusing to let go of their valuables.
The suspect was arrested at the weekend during a raid of some identified criminal hideouts in the Akala, Idi-Iro, and Fadeyi areas of the metropolis. The raid followed frequent complaints by members of the public about the activities of Pumpy and his gang members.
In his confessional statement to the police, Pumpy disclosed that he had raped not less than 30 women in the past three years, with most of his victims those that his gang members had waylaid to be robbed. He explained that his accomplices would drag their unfortunate victims into the bush or abandoned structures where they took turns raping them.

The robbery kingpin, who hails from Ipoti in Ekiti State, also said he had shot dead more than 10 persons in frequent fracas in the Akala area of Mushin widely feared in Lagos as a gathering of undesirable elements and dark spot for criminal activities.
Pumpy narrated, “I joined the boys in the street in 2008 but I founded my own gang in 2010. Initially we were four members in the gang but we later increased to 10. Aside being contracted by land grabbers and members of the different transport unions during their frequent leadership tussles, we also recruit young boys and girls to sell drugs on the street.
“I have over 20 young boys and girls who sell Indian hemp, Codeine, Tramadol and other drugs to users in the area. These young boys and girls do this in return for food, shelter and protection. A good number of them ran away from their homes while some of them are destitute.
“Since 2010 when I founded my own gang, I have killed so many persons. Some of those killed either died during shootouts or were macheted. There was a time I butchered one guy like a goat simply because he assaulted my girlfriend. Before then, I had warned him to stay away from my girl but he refused. I even sent some of his friends to him and he still paid deaf ears. One day, I sent some of my boys to corner him at night and macheted him severally during the fight that later ensued.”

The Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, Superintendent of Police, Olayinka Egbeyemi, who confirmed the arrest said that, though investigation was still ongoing, those arrested would soon be charged to court.

Politics / Nigeria Closes 5 Foreign Missions by olokeded: 5:54pm On May 25, 2017
The Federal Government has approved the closure of five foreign missions and embassies, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama said.

Onyeama told newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, but he did not name the affected embassies or missions, but said the process for closure was underway and was also subject to the approval of the president.

“We do not want to indicate the embassies that will be closed yet because we are in the process of submitting the proposals, the cost analysis and also the political analysis we did to the president.

“When he sees that, he may or may not want to close some, so we have not yet reached the stage of closing some,” he said.

The minister also reiterated that the closing missions abroad were “extremely expensive”.

“The expense, costs of closing embassies is so high and prohibitive but in the long run it will more economical.”

The minister, on April 10, told NAN the closure of Nigerian missions abroad is inevitable.

He admitted that it is expensive to close a country’s embassy but quickly added that in the long run the
policy will be beneficial to Nigerians.

Onyeama stressed that the reduction of Nigeria’s foreign missions remains on the agenda of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

Buhari had said at the inception of his administration that the Federal Government will reduce the number of missions to save cost.

Nigeria currently has 119 foreign missions.

Onyeama said: “The government is following up on that and we have sort of prepared the roadmap; we have started the implementation of that and made also recommendations in that context.

“Paradoxically, closing missions is extremely expensive. At first sight it seems obvious that you close it you are saving cost but you will actually find that the cost of closing is almost prohibitive.

“But in the long run it will be cheaper, but in the immediate and short term it is expensive but we have started the process,” he said.(NAN)

Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the auspices of the Progressives Governors Forum will Wednesday meet with the national leadership of the party to chat the way forward for the party.

Although the agenda of the meeting was not known as at the time of the report, it was gathered that second anniversary of the government and efforts to get the party out of the current financial mess will top discussion at the meeting.

The meeting which will be presided over by the National chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun is expected to be attended by the all the governors elected on the platform of the parry.nt and efforts to get the party out of the current financial mess will top discussion at the meeting.

Health / 6 Myths About Hangovers by olokeded: 12:39pm On May 18, 2017
There are certain misleading myths about hangovers that have become beliefs or truths a lot of people adhere to and advise others to adhere to. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency, helps to dispel some of these misleading myths about hangovers. The following are the 6 misleading myths about hangovers.

Hangovers Are No Big Deal

They are a big deal. Heavy drinking significantly affects the central nervous system, it ‘tinkers’ with the brain chemicals (hence the headaches, dizziness, and nausea) and sends you to the bathroom often, leaving you dehydrated. The morning-after price to pay is a pounding headache, fatigue, cotton mouth, a queasy stomach, and a weakened immune system.

Hangovers Affect Women and Men in the Same Way

Hangovers are not gender blind, they affect men and women differently, and unfortunately the more significant effect is on the women. If a man and woman drink the same amount of alcohol, the woman is more likely to feel the effects. This is because men have a higher percentage of water in their bodies that helps to dilute the alcohol they drink. With women, more alcohol just builds up in their bloodstream.

Only Binge Drinkers Get Hangovers

This isn’t the case all the time. You don’t have to ‘get wasted’ to get a hangover the next morning. Only a couple of drinks can trigger headaches and other hangover symptoms in some people. It is advisable to have water or a non-alcoholic drink between each beer or hard drink you take, to help you remain hydrated and cut down the overall amount of alcohol you drink.

Eat After Drinking

The fact is that eating after you’re already drunk is useless. For it to matter or for it to be of any effect, food has to be eaten before you drink. This way the food can help to slow down how fast your body absorbs alcohol when alcohol is consumed. Probably the only thing that might work is drinking as much water as you can, after drinking or when drunk, this can help you stay hydrated.

Alcohol Helps You Sleep Well

It does the exact opposite. Alcohol might help you doze off more quickly but it eventually undermines the quality of your sleep. The alcohol consumed tends to mess with your REM (Rapid Eye Movement) cycles and you tend to wake up too soon. The hangover from heavy drinking can also strike in the last part of the night, leaving you too uncomfortable to go back to sleep.

Coffee is the Cure

The worst thing you can take to help cure a hangover is coffee. This is because too much coffee tends to lead to more dehydration because the caffeine in coffee is a diuretic that triggers the body to get rid of water, which can make the hangover much worse. Drinking more alcohol to cure a hangover is also another bad idea that only helps to postpone your hangover with possibly worse symptoms. After a night of drunkenness, the best thing you can drink is water to counter dehydration and replace lost electrolytes.

Politics / NAF To Start Oxygen Production by olokeded: 7:40pm On Apr 30, 2017
The Nigerian Air Force says it is set to begin mass production of oxygen for domestic and other uses before the end of 2017.

Air Marshal Abubakar Sadiq, the Chief of Air Staff, stated this on Sunday during a routine inspection of some on-going expansion works at the Nigerian Air force Base in Yola.

Oxygen use for pilots and passengers is a pre-requisite in aviation when aircrafts reaches particular altitude and its production is subjected to strict international standards.

Abubakar said that the oxygen plant would produce enough gas for the needs of Nigerian Air Force Base, Yola as well as other bases.

“I am in Yola for a routine visit to see the expansion works been undertaken to accommodate newly inducted aircrafts and also to inspect the oxygen plant which is at the tail end of completion.

Career / 5 Effective Ways To Get A Lazy Person To Work by olokeded: 9:47pm On Apr 28, 2017
There are ways to get lazy people to work and it just might be a bit easier than you’ve imagined.
Consider the ‘Lazy’ Person

Certain people you consider lazy might not see themselves as lazy. In their own eyes, they’re putting in as much effort as they can. People have different perspectives on what can be defined as laziness and they tend to do what’s in alignment to their goals and view of the world. Ultimately to change people, you have to try to understand them better and first understand their perspectives. You can do this by asking the person non-judgmental questions or talking to others who know the person to get a better picture of his/her personality.

Consider Your Perspective

You have to understand and learn to accept that the fact that another person doesn’t have the same approach to work as yours doesn’t make them lazy. You should try to understand that while your perspective on laziness makes much sense to you, it might not make sense to the other person (as much as this other person’s perspective on laziness doesn’t make sense to you too).

Let Go of Your Preconceived Notions

This basically involves being more understanding and being more flexible with your beliefs and notions on work and laziness. Ultimately, everyone is willing to work hard for things that truly matter to them, so lose your judgments and preconceived notions, and focus on influencing the other person to work based on his/her perspectives.

Tap Into Their Deepest Motivations

To effectively influence people, you have to learn to tap into their deepest motivations. When you give a person a good enough reason or a big enough motivation (based on their deepest motivations) to work and accomplish tasks, you would be surprised at how much they would work to accomplish just about anything you give to them.

Focus on Results Not Activity

Avoid obsessing on how active a person. Focus instead on if the person is achieving the desired results. As long as the person is achieving results, don’t fret so much about how many hours the person works or how diligent they appear to be. The better measure for work is results, rather than time spent.
