One of the governorship aspirant under the platform of All Progressive Congress APC in the last September 3rd primary election in Ondo state Dr Paul Akintelure has debunk the remour making around the state that he is working against the interest of his party in the coming Saturday governorship election and refer to the rumour as immature and lack any element of truth

A statements issue from his media office this morning by one of his aid comrade Segun Olajide said this is an attempt to bring Akintelure name to canvers for their party in the coming election, because they aware that he has his followers across the whole Ondo state and they want to use the avenue of his silence to dent his image within his party and deceive our party member,

We aware about the handwork of some unpopular element in the party who want to use his name to gain popularity within the party by saying they are the only one working for APC that Akintelure has directed his followers across the state to vote for other party, we know that his popularity has be a great night mere for them and they are looking for ways to bring him down at all cost, he said only God made man not by any human being, they are plan can't bring him down but make him him popular the more within APC and in the entire Ondo State.

He said we have labour, work, sacrifice and pay our due to make true democracy to stand in Nigeria and we can't destroy what we have labour for some many years because of personal ambition, my aim to become the governor of Ondo State is for the betterment of the masses not for my personal interest and how the sun we shine again,

Also advice his followers to remain focus and loyal to APC at all time and never work against our party in this election and debunk the remour of his plan to work against his party and warn those who spread unconfirmed report to desist from such attitude which can destroy our great party in Ondo State.

Dr. Paul Akintelure, a seasoned medical practitional and gubernatoria aspirant under APC in Ondo state interview

You control quite a number of businesses today, your background must have availed you a lot of privileges?

Interestingly, like many people do not know, I was never born with a silver spoon. I was born into a family with 10 children and under the care of a father who was a headmaster and mother who was a petty trader and farmer. I was the third in the family.

I started my education at St. Anthony Primary School, Omotosho, Ondo State in 1967 and later left for Igbotako after my father was transferred to St. Pius Primary School where I finished primary school. By the grace of God, I led my class throughout primary school. At that time, gaining admission into secondary school was a bit clumsy, I couldn’t meet up with admission. Instead of idling away, I went to St. Louis Modern Commercial school also in Igbotako where I acquired skills in commercial courses like short-hand, book-keeping and agriculture. After spending few months, I went to Manuwa Memorial Grammar School having fulfilled all admission requirements. It was a very prestigious school. Over there, I had the opportunity of meeting people from other parts of the country. We were trained very well at the school. At the end of the day, out of 168 students, I emerged first on several occasions. It was a very eventful period of my life.

Did the fact that you were the son of a headmaster contribute towards your academic excellence?

Of course, that fact played a pivotal role in the successes that I have enjoyed throughout my life, not just academics alone. Apart from being a teacher, my father was a disciplinarian. He knew the value of education and ensured that we always learnt new things no matter where we were. He was my mentor in many ways.

This means that his death at a time when you were still a boy must have come as a heavy blow for you?

I was in Form Three when my father died; it was as if the world had ended for me and my siblings. His cousin died and the wife came to inform him about it and on their way to Ikorodu from Ondo, there was an accident and my father died. Surprisingly his cousin who was said to have died and for whose sake he was travelling to Lagos didn’t actually die, the news was false. It was a bit of a mystery for us but then, we had to move on after that sad incident.

After his death, I decided to dedicate all my energy towards my education. In fact, I studied and excelled to the extent that some people felt I was a wizard. But then, it was in the midst of suffering which also resulted in stunted growth for me at the time.

So were you taunted by your peers in school as a result of your stunted growth?

My academic performance covered up for my stunted growth because it made people respect and love me.

Before my father died, I got a scholarship from the local government administration in our area. Later after his demise, the community also decided to contribute towards my education. My academic successes opened doors for me.

Surviving under the care of your mother with nine other siblings must have been very tough, what was the experience like?

It was Herculean. My mother was very hardworking, very tough and a disciplinarian as well. Survival was quite tough because the resources to provide our basic needs weren’t always there.

But I didn’t allow all the suffering to change my heart about studying medicine, I was resolute even in the face of such adversity. The scholarships I got along the way helped me a lot in realising this ambition. I turned down admission offers from several notable institutions just to study medicine at the University of Ibadan.

I opted to study medicine as a young man even though I had never seen a doctor before in my life. My motivation was my paternal grandmother. She was good at using herbs to solve a lot of people’s medical problems. I was fascinated by the way she handled sick people; she was never tired of giving them care. That was where the interest to study medicine came from.

Having come from a home where discipline was the watchword, were you deprived of doing the things boys your age did at the time?

My parents were not like that, they didn’t restrict us in any way. All they wanted from us was complete focus on our academics. I played football a lot as a boy but my parents knew that I would always come back to my books and I never disappointed them in that regard.

How did you manage to survive those tough years as an undergraduate?

I will never pray for even an enemy to experience poverty the way I did. Poverty is worse than disease, it reduces a man to a living corpse and robs him of the dignity that he should have. Poverty is capable of killing the man in anybody. In my case perhaps, it was used to strengthen me.

If not for the poverty I experienced while growing up, I probably would have become a professor a long time ago. Poverty robbed me of my concentration and ability to perform at the optimal level while in the university. I could barely afford a textbook and would always borrow from friends who sometimes would embarrass me. This affected my performance a lot even though I knew I could do better.

Of course my academic prowess attracted a lot of people to me especially ladies but I knew what I wanted in life and stayed focused regardless of what I was experiencing at the time. I believe if I enjoyed a percentage of the privilege some students had, I could have performed better in the university and even become a professor long before now.

But I am proud of how far God has brought me. As a medical doctor, I have enjoyed God’s goodness in every ramification. Medicine is part of me and I would forever be grateful to God for this.

If ladies flocked around you all the time as a result of your academic prowess, how easy was it for you to eventually settle for one?

Long before I went to study medicine at the university, I had already made up my mind on the woman I was going to spend the rest of my life with. My wife attended the same church as us and our fathers were very good friends. Beyond that, her homely and loving nature attracted me to her and from the day I made up my mind about her, I had never really shown interest in any other woman.

In fact, a lot of people didn’t believe I was going to marry my wife. She also tried a lot to ensure that we ended as man and wife despite the attention from different men. We are blessed with lovely children and I cannot ask for more. Looking at them makes me happy.

Early in your career, you worked in different hospitals in Abeokuta and Lagos, what was that period like for you?

At the Island Maternity Hospital, Lagos, I almost became enemy of some colleagues. If any patient came in to the place, many of them would want me to attend to them even if I was busy at the time and other doctors were free. Many of my colleagues didn’t like this and so they labelled me all sorts of names but I didn’t care.

I used to live close to the mortuary then; the accommodation I was given by the hospital was very close to a mortuary. Though I had the option to reject the place, I decided to stay there. Even in the night when there was no light, I moved all around and I never met any ghost. But it was very scary I must confess. The workers would always call on me at different times of the day when emergency arose and I gladly went with them. It offended many of my colleagues but it wasn’t my fault.

At Abeokuta, God used me to manage a hospital built by the European Economic Community. People from adjourning villages always visited in large numbers as a result of the effectiveness of the hospital and I was highly celebrated.

But I was shocked to find the place desolate when I visited several years back after I had married. I was told that the place crumbled immediately I left. It was a very sad day for me.

As a busy professional, do you ever find the time to relax?

It is true that my schedule is tight but one way or the other, I give myself rest. My biggest relaxation spot is my home. I feel very comfortable in my house and I am very happy whenever I am with my family. They make me happy; in fact, my wife makes me happier. In spite of my busy routine at the hospital, anytime I want to go home, happiness fills my heart. I make sure the time I spend with them is filled with enjoyment and happiness.

One other thing I also do to relax in between my busy schedule is that I observe one hour of sleep every afternoon no matter where I am. It is something I have done almost all my life and those who know me well can testify. Though there are instances where this would be interrupted by emergencies, I pay much attention to this form of relaxation.

Another form of relaxation for me is listening to fairytales, especially when my mother was alive. Sometimes I call some elderly people who would tell me these stories filled with knowledge. I find a lot of inspiration from this and look forward to listening to new fairytales all the time.

Where are your favourite holiday destinations?

Honestly, my best holiday destination is Igbotako, my hometown. I visit every two weeks on the average. There are times I even go several times within a week. I visit often these days because I have a big farm where I also rear different types of animals over there. I also have a cold room over there. It is a way of creating jobs for people in that area. It is like a preview of what I intend to do for Ondo people if elected as the next governor of the state.

The suffering I experienced as a young man is part of the reasons I am engaged in different humanitarian works, including giving scholarship to several students. As a person, I believe nobody should pass through what I experienced as a result of poverty.

Without much ado about nothing, Ondo State is in a desperate need of leadership redemption at the moment. This is without exaggeration. Anyone who has visited the state in the last couple of months and has interacted with the people extensively will readily agree that they can’t wait for the incumbent administration to pack its baggage of humongous liability and vacate the scene.
Luckily for the suffering masses of the state, every problem has an expiry date. By virtue of the provisions of the 1999 Federal Constitution, the tenure of Governor Olusegun Mimiko expires in the next few months as he’s running on the last lap of his constitutionally-guaranteed two-term tenure.

As nature abhors vacuum so does leadership. When a leader vacates a position, a new one emerges to mount the saddle on behalf of the governed. In a democracy, like ours, periodic elections are held to effect leadership transition. Against this premise, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed November 26, this year, for the next gubernatorial election in the Sunshine State.

Following the announcement, aspirants from the two dominant parties in the state, that is, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC), have been coming out in their scores, announcing their intention to succeed Governor Mimiko. Regardless of the number of those who have declared their interests so far, as more may likely do, some say the more, the merrier, one thing is certain: only one man will emerge the winner of the election that will either make or mar the destiny of the people for the next four years.

While no one can say with any atom of certitude who the winner of the election will be except God, not even the most clairvoyant political pundit can thump his chest and say so, anyone who is familiar with the political terrain in the state knows that there is a man who stands out from the crowd of aspirants so far. And his name is Dr Paul Akintelure, a medical doctor by profession, and a commercial farmer by choice, and by the extraordinary grace of providence, a philanthropist of no mean repute.

Akintelure, what? Yes, his name is Akintelure, not to be confused with the Akinyelures from Idanre, a town, whose geographical location is within Ondo Central Senatorial District, the zone of the incumbent Governor. For the purpose of identity differentiation, Dr Akintelure hails from Igbotako, a sleepy town in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo South Senatorial district, the zone which contributes the largest chunk of the internally generated revenue of the state.

A cursory look at the political dossier of Dr Akintelure, who is the Otunba of Ikaleland and that of Osooro Kingdom, shows that he has consistently been a disciple of the political school of thought that is totally committed to the progressive ideology which seeks to emancipate the common man from the shackles and manacles of all artificial barriers such as poverty, diseases, ignorance and many more. No wonder he is a ranking member of the APC in the current political dispensation.

As far back as the Second Republic when he was still a student, he was politically conscious enough to pitch his tent with the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), the party of the progressives under the leadership of the political icon, foremost thinker and planner, and above all, the leader of all leaders, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, of blessed memory. Only men of sterner stuff of his age could have chosen to be with the UPN then when the major rival party, NPN, just like the PDP, had so much carrots to bait many folks into its fold.

When an attempt was made to retrieve the country from the jackboot of military dictatorship in 1992, he chose to go with the Social Democratic Party, a safe haven for the progressives of that era, though he was a silent member, because he was still trying to find his own feet in the rhythm of life then. At the return of civil rule in 1999, his natural habitat was the Alliance for Democracy, the dominant party in the south-west part of the country then. Even when the Obasanjo tsunami of an election in 2003 chose to emasculate the AD, he did not jump ship.

Dr Akintelure’s moment of political eureka came when the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria emerged from the rubbles of the AD. In fairness to other contributors, he was the soul and heart of the party in Ondo south senatorial district. When the time came for major elections in 2007, he emerged the senatorial candidate of the party which was won by the Senator Hosea Ehinlanwo of the PDP.

Rather than chicken out or lay low, or even defect to the PDP, even when there were pressures from different quarters to do so because of his towering political influence, Dr Akintelure chose to reposition the ACN with other patriots and made it a force to reckon with in the political firmament of the state.
Because of his lofty contributions to the party and his untiring efforts at staying committed to the progressive course, he was rewarded with the position of Deputy Governorship Candidate to Chief Rotimi Akeredolu who flew the flag of the ACN in the 2012 gubernatorial election. The election did not go their way. It went the way of Governor Mimiko as announced by INEC and confirmed by the courts.
Of all the aspirants, one thing stands Dr Akintelure out, he has been a consistent progressive even when the odds stacked against him for his political belief then were high. Being consistent in one’s political belief is a great asset in political leadership. It also shows that if such a man gets to power, he will fulfil the social contract he enters with the people in form of electoral promises. This striking feature of his is an offshoot of what President Buhari, the symbol of change, stands for. Both of them have been unrepentantly committed to their belief.

PoliticsAPC To Choose Loyal And Committed Aspirant As Party Candidate In Ondo State by oluminister(op): 8:20pm On May 07, 2016
A leader in all progressive Congress APC in Ondo state has said that the party and all the delegates Will use loyalty and commitment to determine their governorship candidate in the forth coming party primary election, the APC stalwart who want his name not to be mention said among the aspirants we have committed one and those that are not committed at all.

He make it known after the meeting of the leadership of the party in Akure, he said the loyalty and commitment we are talking about is not about your wealth but about how far you have stand by the party, although we have numerous aspirants under our party now but only one will emerge as the candidate, and all this aspirants cut across all the three senatorial district but the northern and southern part has the major aspirants.

At the end of the leaders meeting they ratify few aspirant base on their cadre as most most loyal and committed, loyal and committed, loyal only and committed only. Only few aspirants fall in first cadre of committed and loyal that always respect the directive of the party at all time, which includes Dr Paul Akintelure from the southern part of the state, Sen. Ajayi Borroface and Dr. Tunji Abayomi both from the northern part of the state.

With the look of things now it seems the race for the party ticket is between the southern and northern part of the state with Sen. Ajayi Borroface as the leading aspirant from the north and Dr. Paul Akintelure from the southern part of the state.

Although free fair and credible primary election Will be use to determine the candidate for the party and the party will give anybody who emerge as the candidate of the party their maximum support.
PoliticsOndo State: I Weep For You, Dayo Williams by oluminister(op): 1:34pm On Apr 23, 2016
Another gubernatorial election draws nigh in Ondo State and the Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, in his usually characteristically cosmetic approach to governance known only to the deep – for the masses are largely unaware of this – has signed another Memorandum of Understanding with an American bitumen exploration company called Liquefied Resources LLC.

A random check of the company on the internet shows that it has no functional website. There is no nothing to show that it has the capacity to do the exploration which requires so much technical-know how, coupled with an established track record of completed or ongoing projects in bitumen exploration processes.

Again, the company based at 107S Beech Springs, Cir Spring, Texas, 77389, United States of America, was only incorporated in February, 2012 according to the Houston-based 75-year old President of the company, Thomas Elard Cooley. Yet, the Managing Director of the Nigerian subsidiary of the company, one Mr. Tony Amechi James, on his LinkedIn page says he has been with the company since 2006. Who will reconcile the difference in the dates? Does it mean that the Nigerian subsidiary was created before its American parent? Something appears clumsy there. And who does business with such a company in this 21st century?

Typical of his army of online supporters, as soon as the news of the agreement hit the news wave, they have been trooping out in their hundreds to celebrate on the Nigerian blogosphere, praising the governor to the heavens for industrialising the state. Pray, how does the signing of an MOU with a company whose capacity is in doubt amount to industrialisation? It is even more suspicious when one realises the fact that the governor has a few months to spend in the office as his two-term tenure winds to a close. For how long shall the people remain dogmatic and blind due to partisan leanings? It is even more pathetic seeing people from the southern part of the state, the most backward senatorial district of the state, commending the governor on this.

As an oil producing state, I state all the time, and I will say it here again that we have no minutest of reasons to be economically backward and development-atrophied in the way we have been in the state in the past seven years of Governor Mimiko’s coming to power.

The greatest strength of the governor is his maradonic politics, which is ably fuelled by the poverty (mental and material) of the masses of the people in the state. And this is because he has mastered the transient needs of our people. So he knows how to dangle the carrot before them so he can get what he wants, especially now that another election is around the corner.

In truth, were we a serious people, Governor Mimiko ought not to be anywhere near governance in the 21st century in our dear state – a state blessed with well-endowed human resources, and material resources beneath its earth. But a people deserve the type of leader they get, as the saying goes. And he is simply giving it out to them as they rightly deserve so.

Folks who are easily deceived by his non-existent performance point to his ‘caring heart revolution’ in the health sector. Whatever that means! Yet, when you ask these folks to point to such revolution in their locality, they are quick to refer you to the ‘Mother and Child Hospital’ in Akure or the one in his town, Ondo, where he cited the new Ondo State University of Medical Sciences.

Igbotako, where I come from, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state has a General Hospital only on paper. If by tomorrow you go there and get Paracetamol of the May and Baker brand, you could inform the whole world and I will apologise for misinforming the people. Our people rely on illiterates and quacks for medical treatment. Recently, the state’s Ministry of Health was there to close a notorious clinic run by an auxiliary, ‘one-okan’ expert who had claimed to be a medical doctor for many years. That is enough indictment against the so-called landmark achievement of his in the health sector. So, I ask, again: what manner of revolution is it that does not get to the rural areas where the masses are really based?

He has started dribbling them again. Politics is paramount again. He wants to install his successor at all cost so that he can sustain the status quo by the time he exits power soon. He has started promising the people heaven on earth, like he did in 2009 and 2012.

Recently, I met a senior citizen of the state in Abuja who was with him in the Labour Party, but refused to defect with him to the PDP on the basis of principle. When the man gave me a graphic detail of the humongous debt profile of the state under Governor Mimiko, I momentarily collapsed on my seat twice!

Every state borrows to fund projects when their internal revenue inflow cannot meet up on these. But it is also important for the sake of transparency that the projects on ground must be commensurate to the funs borrowed. So, I ask again: where are the projects? Perhaps the Ondo State University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, was created more out of the tribal love he has for his town than the love of Ondo State.

As I write this, workers in the state are being owed six months salaries. No one is even talking about the pensioners. Those ones are a forgotten lot. Then one tends to ask: what were the bailout funds for? Remember those bailouts are loans to the state from the federal government? What about the 13% derivation from federal revenue allocations that the state receives monthly? What about its statutory allocation every month? What about the bonds he sourced through the capital market? Does it mean the state does not generate any revenue internally? What happened to Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC)?

My only worry now is that the dominant opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is practically doing nothing to engage the governor. By now, a formidable APC should have been taking the governor up on the cosmetic projects he purports to have initiated in the state.

A serious APC would have taken the governor to the cleaners on the astronomical debt profile of the state. A prepared APC would have taken the governor up on the reasons for the non-payment of workers’ salary. Six months running now!

A determined APC would have tasked the governor on what went wrong with the widely-publicised teachers recruitment exercise in the state. Today, most schools in the rural areas rely on PTA teachers for their pupils. Any wonder the state has steadily been declining in WAEC and NECO national performance annually? This is a sad development which runs contrary to the lofty dreams of the founding fathers of the once illustrious state.

Yet, we have a major election coming by November this year. The fireworks are not just there. Perhaps they want to use the fire brigade approach when the election is finally around the corner. I worry presently. Our people are in bondage, but they don’t seem to know. Will the sun shine in Ondo State again?
