Romance / Re: Nigerian Mom Rants After Her Ex-boyfriend Demanded She Cooks For Him by OluOlaLekan(m): 7:19am On Apr 30, 2019
I think these attitudes don't bode well for the younger generation's prospects of peaceful relationships. If I have had a disrespectful girlfriend somewhere in the background, this just scares the shit out of me the more.

Older peeps, endeavour to model goodly traits.
Nairaland / General / Re: What A Lady Did After A Man Tried Giving Her A Lift While It Was Raining by OluOlaLekan(m): 5:23pm On Jul 05, 2018
Same Ibadan city in 2013, precisely opposite Omo Gafo building at the entrance to Iaganku quarters on Ring road. I was standing in the rain on my way to work and a fellow man who was a total stranger pulled up and dropped me off at the junction to my workplace. So, what's the biggie? Nigeria is hard already as it is; let's not make it harder.
Crime / Re: SARS Killed Julia Imaga & Boyfriend, Oh Dollar, Thinking He's Yahoo Boy - Lady by OluOlaLekan(m): 6:19pm On Jun 21, 2018
I am more concerned about how a semmingly well-raised young lady like this would end up in such company in school. May God help us raise our children and may the souls of these departed ones rest in peace. Unfortunately too, it had to be my alma mater, OOU.

Religion / Re: "For Better For Worse" Is It Supposed To Be Used During Vow? by OluOlaLekan(m): 9:55am On Apr 08, 2018
You see, it's the same virus that made us change the lyrics of that popular song "When trouble comes my way, i will praise the Lord". Now, everyone sings "when success comes my way, I will praise the Lord. But in plain terms, the bible never told us it would be a bed of roses. John 16:33b puts it right.. "in the world, ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world".

It's just the idealist's fantasies and this virus is eating us so deep!

Religion / Re: Woman Gives Birth To Miracle Twins, After Doctor Said She Was Carrying Fibroid by OluOlaLekan(m): 1:51pm On Oct 18, 2017
That there are fibroids in your uterus doesnt necessarily mean you can't conceive. Fibroids and fetus(es) do coexist.

Possible explanation. You got pregnant after the doctor's scan. You can tell us the date to disprove this. You may repeat the scan now to save the doctor from being labelled a quack by nairalanders. You will still find the fibroids there except they have been surgically removed and you didnt tell us; and telling incomplete stories is something people do when they want to lump miracles down our throat. Otherwise, then whoever did the scan was just grossly incompetent.

That said, I guess your twins are all that matters now; not who was right or who was wrong. So, congratulations and God bless your babies.

Education / Re: Photo: Prof Reacts To His Student Acknowledging His Babe In His Project. by OluOlaLekan(m): 1:36pm On Oct 18, 2017
I have seen a supervisor like that in the university who specifically instructed a final year student to rearrange his acknowledgements and take God to the last. The student had initially acknowledged God before any other person but the supervisor wanted to be mentioned first. We were all surprised but the bros had to do it the supervisor's way.

Fulani herdsmen or poachers? Just about all actrocities are now lumped together and blamed on the Fulani man. I live in Taraba and I've been to the park. The situation is not as bad. May the soul of the departed rest in peace.

Literature / Re: Cyprian Ekwensi Plagiarized Hausa Story "Jiki Magayi" by OluOlaLekan(m): 7:08pm On Jul 16, 2016
CoCoLav:
There is copyright in the translated version of a literary work. Most times the original author may assign that right to another person with an understanding. Nevertheless, even if permission was not obtained, Cyprain will still have copyright in the translated version because it satisfies the originality and fixation requirement albeit he might have infringed the original author's own copyright as well. This is not about plagiarism, he put efforts into translating it and the law recognizes that. It would be plagiarism if he reproduced it in Hausa.

I can decide to translate Shakespeare's works into Yoruba and make money off it and nobody will come after me.

& who says Tafida couldn't have translated the work himself?

1. Both options for #1 are wrong. You don't GIVE but GRANT leave.
2. A) I wish I were the campaign manager of PDP in the last general election.
3. A) The news of president Buhari's arrival was broadcasted yesterday.
4. B) They appeared to be talking on private matters.
5. B) He fell from the top of the house.
6. B) The subject matter of his discourse was excellent.
7. B) ) If she knew about his financial situation, she would have helped him out.
8. B) Her baby daddy has too many baggage.
9. B) B) Nothing but that would satisfy him.
10. This would definitely pass as A but the consonant 'H' in the English alphabet is the only consonant that is allowed to carry both the 'A' and the 'AN', just like the vowel 'U' can sometimes carry or tag along with the article 'A'. EG, He has A UNIQUE point of view.

Talking about the indefinite articles "a" and "an", words with an initial "h" CANNOT take on both articles. The determinant is the preceeding phonetic sound in the word in question. Words starting with an initial vowel sound take on the aricle "an" while those that start with a consonant sound take the article "a". An understanding of this basic rule will help you explain away all the seemingly confusing exceptions.

Take a look at the following examples:

A unique concept. The first sound in the word "unique" is the consonant sound "y" and not the vowel sound "u"; so the word takes on the article "a" even though the first letter is a vowel

An SMS. The first sound here is the vowel sound "e". It precedes the "s" sound even though the first letter "s" is a consonant.

Talking about the words with an initial "h", you just have to memorise the few exceptions. In most cases in English language when the letter "h" starts a word, it is often pronounced and not silent. As "h" is a consonant sound, such words take on the article "a" as in "a helicopter", "a horrible descent". There are however only four words in the whole of English language which start with an "h" but take on the article "an". This is because the letter "h" is silent and not voiced in these words, thus making the next letter which is usually a vowel to take over as the first sound and the determinant of the choice of article. These words are "hour, honour, honest and heir". Therefore, whenever these words and all their derivatives appear, they take on the article "an". See these examples.

An honest lawyer, an heir apparent to the British throne, an hourly injection of the drug, an honourable sheriff.

I hope someone here now perfectly understands the use of indefinite articles in English language. Thank you.

flamingREED:

'Campaign manager of PDP' is ungrammatical.

It should be 'the PDP'.
