TCD: Hope the spambot doesn't ban me for talking too much

..Okay guys, here it goes. Congratulations for having gotten admission into medical school, whether it's by merit, catchment, runs or your papa connections, doesn't matter. Nobody cares how you got in, What matters now is you have gotten in, it's going to be a tough and stressful journey lasting for 6-7-8 years (when you add strike)

What I'm going to mention here is just to try and shine a torch for you into the 'dark street' to at least make life alot easier. These are based on my personal experiences as well as those of colleagues both in my teaching hospital and other schools. Let me quickly add that I admire the doggedness and determination some of you have shown in your attempts to get into med school, I hope you get in eventually. I was very fortunate I wrote jamb only once had a great score and got admission into med school immediately after my SS3.

Now to your first year, you'll be doing science courses like mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology (depending on your school you might have more science courses) in addition, English and your Gst or GSS courses. Those science courses in addition to English are core courses. You'll do them for two semesters.

These courses are very easy to pass, but also easy to fail. It's very easy to be carried away in first year, new freedom, new school and friends some of them bouncing around campus as per 'med student ' and thinking they have arrived. This is the time some foolish clowns will now join cult and be feeling big thinking the world is at their feet. Quick advise here, medical school doesn't respect cult. Infact most of them fail, never make it past third year. The few ones I know who managed to pass did so by studying well like everybody else not intimidating lecturers, professors and doctors. Sorry for the digression, First year is the only time you'll use grades system (A-F) and a CGPA. So this is your opportunity to pack all the A's you want and get a good CGPA (I'll tell the importance of this later). From your year two, you cease to use that grading system rather we use the pass/fail system.

Let me tell you a secret, each university has a quota of medical students it's supposed to admit yearly. MDCN recently has been getting really serious about enforcing this rule. They have withdrawn accreditation from schools like uniport last year(though they later got it back). I think Uniport didn't admit any new medical students that year. Also uniben and igbenedion I think also had the same problem. Schools are struggling real hard to cut down on the number of students they have in each class in order to maintain accreditation. What medical schools do is over-enroll students more than their quota (obviously for the money) then impose very strict year one rules/targets to weed out alot of people

Some schools say, If you fail one core course you withdraw from medicine and/or change to another course, others maybe set the limit more than two you withdraw, some say have a GPA of 3.8 or so else you withdraw. I'm saying all this so you'll be on the look out and not be caught unawares. Just find out what the conditions are in your school for first year and try to adjust accordingly (if you're lucky your school might not have such strict policies, but know it's becoming common place now that MDCN is not smiling) . During my first year, it wasn't this strict although if you failed more than two core courses you'll be asked to withdraw. Now it's even more stringent. It'll be painful after struggling for admission to be told to withdraw just in year 1 (well, I guess it's not as painful as colleagues of mine told to withdraw at 500L after spending close to 6 years in med school ).

This is a link to MDCN website showing accredited medical schools and their quota http://www.mdcnigeria.org/Approved quota for Medical and Dental Schoos.htm . Most schools have 50, 75, 100 student slots, UNN, Unimaid, Unilag and Ilorin have 150, UI has 180. If you check your school and you see quota is 100 students then you look at your class and count that you're 220, mehn, be very afraid because your school will look for scapegoats to cut down by all means. Note if you see 50, it simply means by MDCN rules your school is not supposed to "ideally" have more than 50 students in EVERY (bar repeat students I think?)

I repeat again, don't enter 'one chance' o, try your best to pass all your year 1 courses. They are really easy. Another secret, no lecturer will set for exam what he hasn't taught you. It's really rare I tell you. Don't mind all the horror stories they told you about UNI beforehand. Honestly I've asked around and most people have told me most lecturers set what they have taught or mentioned to go read or assignments given.(in the last professional exam I wrote, one of the essay questions was an assignment given to us, silly me I didn't do that assignment had to manufacture few things from residual knowledge lol) So you don't have to cram the whole text book. Read what your lecturer has taught in class, photocopy notes(from serious students) if you can't write and read them. Please please, READ your NOTES Well before you use textbook to consolidate. The lecturer is not a clown, he took time to prepare that note/lecture and knows why he's giving you. 85% of the time that's where your exams are coming from.

I had people in my first year who loved reading OP (off point) in textbooks. Read note, they won't, na to go they do oversabi. Needless to say, they didn't make it. Don't get me wrong o, not saying you shouldn't read texts, but do so with wisdom and let your notes guide you.

I don tire to type for now, hope my long rant makes sense to someone. Other guys who have passed and scaled through year 1 can add more to this or modify it. A contribution from Lagusta will also be of great help too. If I remember any more things for year 1 I'll add to this, right now my brain don freeze. Ask any questions I'll gladly clarify.

Moving on, for your year two you start pre-clinicals. .............to be continued ..

.

God bless...you are right about the quota being reduced this year u.i only admitted 104 students for mbbs..a great reduction

TCD: Good to see you all here. I'm a Part IV (FInal) Mbbch in a federal uni down south, finishing very soon. To those of you just starting out, I wish you luck, I'll be back to give you pointers on things you should know and how to survive medical school. Wish someone had told me all these when I was starting out, life would been a whole lot easier.
looking forward to that..thanks

nice-guy1:
Gud day Doctors, i'm a young man of 23 with d passion of being a medical doctor. But getting into medical college has not been easy at all. By God's grace, I'm a 2nd class upper graduate of Biochemistry frm Michael Okpara uni. of agric. Umudike. B4 i went in 4 biochemistry, i wrote jamb 3 times, all because of medicine..... But didn''t get admission. I graduated frm Biochemistry in 2010....... I have bought D.E form 2 times..... Still i couldn't secure admision into Medicine. Now, i hv bought M.sc form...... But still my mind is in becoming a medical Doctor. I'm also praying 2 God for direction. But Pls, my friends, I need ur candid advice...... Shld i continue with M.sc in pharmacological Biochemistry or continue d search for medicine and surgery?
Mr nice guy..its better to keep progressing than to remain at a stagnant position..you can continue with your pursuit for medicine and still be doing your masters degree programme...and age isn't a factor, last week at my clearance centre i met a 23yrs old man who just got admitted through d.e..so do not give up on your dream..it is well
