try and be well grounded in statistics atleast the applied part of it and for a good software to start with, start with, Excel, spss and minitab.

A degree in statistics, mathematics or computer science is a good one... it also requires softwares like spss, mintab, R programming, SAS, etc... pyton is also a good one,but this is at advanced levels and at that point u should be referred to as a data scientists, learning a data base like SQL is also useful at this level... but for now start with majorly statistics and softwares like spss and minitab... MIND you, this skill isnt as easy as people think, because majority of people just stop at the surface...
