Emmigration is the best. And the time to start is now - now that you are new. From your HJ money to NYSC money, you can save a lot to emmigrate.

The future is very bleak in Nigeria. The present condition is arguably at an all time low, in terms of frustration and further training, similar to what happened in the 80s

The only sensible reason to remain in Nigeria is Patriotism, knowing that your training was considerably subsidised with taxpayers' funds.

Some rationalise this sentiment by helping out from diaspora or coming back much later to establish something of standard.

Hi,

There are many causes of lower abdominal cramps in women.

It could be a sign of ovulation, especially if it has been over a week since your last period.

If the cramps are persistent, or severe, or worsening, please see your doctor for examination and possible investigations.

You may take pain reliever such as Ibuprofen 400mg 2 times a day for not nore than 3 days, if you do not have peptic ulcer.

Medically, sex is not forbidden in normal pregnancy,

However, if she has had a bleeding in this pregnancy, or a history of miscarriage, or if she has cervical incompetence (a condition whereby the mouth of the womb begin to widen long before labour), or a low-lying placenta (placenta praevia), she should abstan from sex.

If none of the above, then no problem with sex.

She should feel free to ask her doctor this and other questions during her antenatal clinics.

Hello!!! Pls, for a medical student, what is the maximum and minimum hours for him/her to study/read per day?

No hard and fast rules. It depends on you.

My general rule was to try to cover the lectures of the day before the end of the day, and to do a weekly review by weekends plus 'mop-up' reading, whereby I read fresh topics that I was not able to read on their lecture days.

I also paid more attention to topics I found too large or more difficult, meaning I gave special attention to them at the expense of others. The amount of time and work I gave to a course was inversly related to how easy-to-understand-or-remember that course was to me.

Eg, because I found Biochemistry quite simple, I spent far less time on it, not out of neglect but just because I did not need to spend much time on it to pass it. Same with Public Health and Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 4th MB class, and somewhat, Medicine in Final MB.

You should also know which part of the day you read and understand most. Personally, I could not read at nights; the output was too little compared to the input. Thirty minutes of reading in the Mornings could give me the same output that a 4-hour studying session would give me in the afternoons and at nights.

I discovered this close to my 2nd MB exam, more than a year into med school. From then on, I changed my reading time. I would usually "go to class" or read in the room from around 3am to around 7am, having slept from around 8pm. When I needed more time, I would skip some lectures (usually those known not to have much benefit to me) and read all morning up to 11am.

So in general, find what works for you and maximise it. That way, med school will not be too intimidating or stressful to you

Please, Help! I need serious Advice. I am a 100level student of the Benue State University College Of Health Sciences. We have been on strike for 5 months and still hoping to resume school soon.
It kind of make me wonder what kind of medical education am I going to get from a Medical school which has not even graduated a single medical student. Medics have been here for like 12 years Without graduation.
I am planning to leave for another medical school but I am still confused about it.
I don't know whether to
continue in this medical school and suffer the consequence of not graduating on time or make an alternate move to another medical school, but time is not on my side, I am 20 years old already.

If I were in your shoes, I'd write another JAMB and move on at another school. All the best

This is very true, in the sense that such pass rate is possible with the current curriculum of med school in Nigeria where the load far exceeds the time to cover them. It is not entirely the lecturer's problem, neither does it mean that 93.6% of the students are olodos. Centje, how many people passed physiology 1st test in our class then? Lol

It is a test result, usually at the begining of the 1st professional exam, so the examiner might have been very strict regarding the marking scheme. Then, many med students are yet to understand how to pass and what to read. Many are still lost in the never-ending volumes of stuff to read.

In time the scores will improve, and by the end of the 1st professional exam, pass rate should be around 50%, partly because these scores might have stimulated the students more, and partly because the students get to mature and read more purposefully.

The result is a true reflection of med school, at that stage in many schools. This is the kind of things non medical students will never understand, even our closest neighbours in allied medical departments.

Just take your meds as required. Seek education/info about your condition from reliable sources, and avoid stress.

thank u for responding back. Its vitamin b 6 (pyrodixine) and O- ovulation. Am thru wit AF n in my fertile week. So can I go for d scan (follicular tracking) want to knw if I can take d vit b 6 to aid implantation.

Yea you can go now. You will be given another appointment for the actual tracking.

Vitamin 6 is thought to help women ttc due to leuteal phase problems. It could help.

I just observed this morning that when I am pressing the pedal (accelerating), the pointer on the tachometer keeps ascending till it gets to 7 and eventually the red zone while the speedometer reading does not exceed 40-50km/hr.
and I also noticed that the gears were not selecting as it works only with a single gear.
The reverse gear. neutral. d2 are all working
ng fine and the car is actually moving around, but with stress.
I consulted my mechanic but he said its the transmission gear that has gone completely bad. I don't seem to trust him anyway cos he is a confirmed Kazeem.
pls my people, what might be wrong with my car? do I really need to change the transmission?

Run a scan for any codes. A bad throttle position sensor can cause similar symptom.

Dh is felling suicidal abt his semen analysis which have failed to improve over a year now on different medication. 9months back it was 3milion, and placed on enhanz drug for 3month .re-test 6months ago it was 4milion started using vitamine E and folic acid . 2months after it was 10milion. If dh is feeling suicidal please let his doctor know, and let him see a psychologist asap.

Depression can even worsen his sperm production.

You and the both extended families should give him all the support he needs, and avoid placing him under any more pressure.

Let him continue what seemed to have worked for him -folic acid and vitamin E- and adopt other sperm-boosting lifestyle changes.

You can schedule for follicular tracking when your menses stops, usually on day 5. But real tracking could commence as from a week after depending on your menstrual cycle.

What do you mean by "vit b"? I guess "O" means ovulation?

Do not be scared.

Pcos is treatable, and you will conceive.

Note that dh not being around adequately is also very important and could be the factor.

I am sure your doctor will place you on appropriate therapy for the pcos.

Doc. hi. Thanks for replying me. Before i could go for the evacuation i had strong contractions and the foetus was expelled naturally. When i went back to the hospital(general) i was told to do a pelvic scan and was told there wasn't need for the evacuation. Pls my main concern now is this , am i meant to be on antibiotics to prevent any infection because at the hospital i was told its not necessary. Pls i need your advise. Thank you

You are welcome. Public tertiary hospitals in Lagos such as LUTH offer standard clinical care. Private hospitals such as Reddinton, Eko and Lagoon are also reputable.

There are many others too.

More importantly, you should register for your antenatal at a hospital where you can easily consult a consultant Obstetrician.

Your dh should be tested too. If he is positive, he will be managed according to the protocol for managing hepatitis B infection.

The most important thing is the pelvic bones.

Both short and tall ladies can have a problem of inadequate pelvis that would make vaginal birth difficult or impossible.

Unless the shortness you mean is pathological (dwarfism), height alone does not determine the success of vaginal delivery.

Sperm coming out after sex is not abnormal.

Breast tenderness 2 weeks to menses could be a sign of ovulation.

Has ur dh done his semen analysis?

1. during my first pregnancy i was told i am hepatatis B positive and was not treated. A nurse told me then that i could treat it later. The problem now is that i was not able to treat it and now am pregnant again, abt three months gone. What should i do? please advise.
2. Apart from pregnacare, what are other alternative multivitamins that can be taken during pregnancy in Nigeria?
3. During my first pregnancy i did not take any TT vaccine, can i still take it now and at what week of pregnancy?

1. You should repeat the test to see if you are still positive. If positive, your baby should receive hepatitis B immunoglobulin at birth to prevent mother-to-child transmission.

2. I don't know of any brand of multivitamins safe for use in pregnancy. The most important ones are iron, calcium, folic acid and vitamin c. They are available as individual tablets.

3.You can take it now.

Commonest cause of discharge from the breast is abnormally high prolactin hormone (hyperprolactinaemia).

Apart from breast discharge, it can also cause menstrual disturbances and lack of ovulation.

You can comfirm by doing a bood test to measure your prolactin hormone. You should also have a breast exam to exclude the less likely causes of a breast discharge.

High prolactin is treatable, and curable when the cause is known.

Hello Dr. I am 7 months pregnant and i have been have foul smelly discharge and itching. i went to see ma doc yesterday and he said I should take augmentin tab and clotrimazole carbine passeri. it is ok for me to use them?

Augmentin tablet is relatively safe to use at 7 months pregnancy. No problem, so long as its use is indicated.

Clotrimazole persary is also safe for the treatment of candidiasis in pregnancy.

Thanks for your response. Just back from the hospital where a scan was carried out and the report said i had a blighted ovum. Instead of a 10week old pregnancy scan showed 6weeks and no fetal activity. I was told to come back for an evacuation this evening but presently i m in so much pain cos the bleeding has intensified. Pls is it advisable to do the evacuation or wait for the foetus to expel itself? Thank you

If there is no viable fetus and you are bleeding, you should have the evacuation.

HSG is supposed to be done right after the menstruation before ovulation. Usually day 6 of the MC is good. If you are ovulating, you should wait till your next cycle.

Bed Rest. Complete rest. Then go to hospital asap. There, you get necessary tests and ultrasound, continue bedrest under mild sedation.
