Former Governor Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has charged the immediate past Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, and the 2015 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Umar Nasko, with an alleged N3bn fraud.
The charges were filed before a Federal High Court in Minna, Niger State.
Nasko also served as Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Environment under Aliyu’s administration between 2007 and 2015.
According to the EFCC, Aliyu, who is popularly known as the chief servant, allegedly diverted N520m from the Niger State Government Security Account domiciled in Zenith Bank account between January and March 2011.
Within the same period, the former governor also allegedly diverted a separate N1.7bn from the same account.

The commission said in 2015 Aliyu and Nasko allegedly diverted about N1.09bn, which was 16 per cent shares of Niger State in the North South Power Company Limited.
The alleged crimes are believed to be in contravention of sections 97 and 312 of the Penal Code.
One of the charges read in part, “That you, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, being the governor (also known as chief servant) of Niger State from 2007 to 2015; Umar Mohammed Nasko, being the former Commissioner for Environment/Chief of Staff to Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, sometime between April 7, 2015 and December 7, 2015 in Minna within the jurisdiction of this honourable court while being entrusted with dominion over money belonging to Niger State. Government dishonestly converted to your own use the sum of N1,090, 000,000, which formed part of the proceeds of the sale of 16 per cent shares of the sale of Niger State in the North South Power Company Limited and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 312 of the Penal Code.”

Nigerian stocks rose by more than two percent on Monday after the central bank introduced a new policy to allow foreign investors to engage in foreign exchange trading at rates the buyers and sellers set.
The market all share index rose in early trade by 2.37 percent, lifted by Dangote Cement, which accounts for a third of the market capitalisation.
A central bank circular seen by Reuters also said all people or businesses, local or foreign, who need dollars to repay loans, pay dividends, repatriate capital or settle trade-related obligations will be eligible for the new trading system.

The British government has initiated a program in which Nigerians can secure visas to the UK the same they they applied for it or wait for 5 days before getting it- at a fee however.
The British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Paul Arkwright, said the embassy has also reduced the maximum turnaround time for all classes of visa application to 15 days.
He spoke during the weekend in Lagos state.
“In 2016, around 140,000 Nigerians applied for visas to the UK. Of those that applied for student visas, 90% were successful. For those that applied for other visas, around 70% were successful. There are as many as 250,000 Nigerian nationals or dual Nigerian-British nationals living in the UK at the moment. Some claim the total Nigerian Diaspora in the UK is well over a million. We want Nigerians to come to the UK. They come to do business, to study, to see family and to invest in our economy.
“We have introduced a same day visa service – at a cost – for visas in Nigeria. We have also introduced a service that can mean you get a visa within 5 days, at a lower cost than the same day process. Our turnaround time for all other visas is 15 days. The key thing, however, is that all visitors to the UK – whether they are from Nigeria or anywhere else – must respect the law and the length of time their visa says they can stay in the UK,” Arkwright said.
He also predicted that Nigeria’s role in the world would change significantly as, in few years, Lagos would become a major global economic centre while Nigeria would emerge one of the three biggest countries in the world.
“By 2050, Nigeria will be the third biggest country in the world as it will overtake the USA to join China and India as the three biggest countries. Secondly, Lagos – Africa’s fifth largest economy in 2016 – will become more important in the coming years as the African example of how to break down barriers to doing business and bring in foreign investment,” he said.

At least four people were feared dead on Monday following a clash between scrap dealers and security men guarding oil pipelines in Isheri Osun/ Ijegun area of Lagos.
Residents of the area said that the armed security agents raided the scrap dealers for engaging in allegedly “ nefarious activities’’.
In the free-for-all fight, four persons were shot dead while several others sustained serious injuries.
“They came and started shooting, killing four of our men. I am just coming from Isolo mortuary where I deposited the corpse of my brother and some other bodies.
“About 17 people are lying critically wounded in two hospitals in the area, while others are in the police custody,” a victim, who identified himself as Sanni, said.
The angry mob also set ablaze two Hilux patrol vans at the scene.
The injured were taken to Eniola Hospital, Isheri-Oshun while the dead bodies were deposited at Mainland General Hospital, Yaba morgue.
The traditional ruler of Ijegun, Oba Nureni Akinremi, said that policemen from Area ‘M’ Command were invited to quell the clash which disrupted commercial activities in the area for several hours.
“I did not allow the clash to escalate so I called a combined police team from Isheri Osun, Ikotun and Area `M’, Idimu to restore normalcy,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Olarinde Famous-Cole, said that the police were only invited to the scene to maintain law and order.
About five police patrol vans with armed personnel were moving around the area while those arrested were detained at Isheri Police Station.

The Presidency said on Monday that the nation's elite were attacking President Muhammadu Buhari in the media because they were frustrated by the ongoing anti-graft war.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement, said the Presidency would not allow them to frustrate the fight against corruption.
He was reacting to the accusation by former Military Governor of Kaduna State Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar that Buhari's government was not being fair in the anti-graft war.

Shehu assured that the anti-corruption war had come to stay as long as Buhari is in power, saying the government would neither be deterred by false accusations nor be quenched by disgruntled elements.

Shehu said: "A number of Nigerian elites have over the years benefitted from various forms of corruption, including monthly payouts from the office of previous National Security Advisers. Let me clarify that this is not in reference to Colonel Umar in particular.

"The Buhari administration has offended so many of our greedy elite by putting a stop to this, plugging many of the holes through which our country's resources, belonging to each and every one of us, were looted by a few. Naturally, these elites are frustrated. But we shall not allow them to frustrate the war against corruption."
He added: "By now, President Buhari's administration is quite familiar with the barrage of verbal attacks that have accompanied the administration's determined war against corruption. A number of Nigeria's elite, uncomfortable with the disruption of business as usual, have fought viciously, usually via the media.

"However, this comment, coming from, Colonel Umar, is highly disappointing. Because he is not in a position to label accusations. He should, instead, allow other to do this."
