Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested two suspected robbers, who were escaping with a vehicle stolen in Lagos State. The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday. Oyeyemi said the suspects, Raymond Chukwudi and Ekene Okoro, were arrested by men of the Federal Highway Patrol at Ajebandele, a boundary between Ogun and Ondo states, while on stop-and-search. He said the suspects were arrested on Tuesday. Oyeyemi stated, “During the operation, the operatives stopped a Toyota Fortuner SUV with number plate AGL 834 GU with three occupants. “On interrogation, the occupants, whose countenance was suspicious, were unable to give satisfactory information about the vehicle; hence the policemen put a call through to the owner, whose phone number was seen on the particulars, for further enquiries. “Sensing that the game was up, one of the occupants took to his heels, while the other two were quickly apprehended. “The owner of the vehicle was later contacted and he explained that the robbers invaded his house on Iriferiogoma Street, Lakowe Phase 2, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, where they forcefully dispossessed him of the vehicle. “The two suspects were handed over to the DPO, Ogbere, for investigation.” The PPRO added that the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for onward transfer to the Lagos State Police Command, which would prosecute them. https://punchng.com/two-nabbed-in-ogun-with-car-stolen-from-lagos/

OGUN State government has expressed worries over the prevalence of smoking among secondary school students in the state. The government said it had intensified campaigns against drug abuse and cigarette smoking by students of public and private schools in the state. The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, who disclosed these on Monday, said 3,200 young children and teenagers under 18 years, smoked their first cigarette while more than 2,100 young adults became daily smokers. Coker said this while addressing newsmen to kick-start an awareness campaign against smoking to mark the 2021 World No Tobacco Day in Abeokuta, the state capital. She said the Ministry of Health through the state Drug Control Committee had been engaging secondary school students across the state to discourage them from smoking and the use of illicit drugs. Coker said part of the efforts of the state to curb smoking and drug abuse among students was the establishment of Drug free clubs in both public and private secondary schools. The commissioner said, 16,800 Nigerians die of tobacco-related illness annually. She said cigarette smoke contained more than 7,000 harmful chemicals, “70 of which are known to cause cancer.” Coker said, “Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death in the world. It kills more people than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. The wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, has called for actions to address issues around menstrual hygiene as well as creation of more awareness to change the negative social norms around it. In the same vein, Prime Diamond Initiative for Community Health (PDICH) has said it aims to empower over 500 women through the production and distribution of sanitary products in Plateau State. Also, the Centre for Media Advocacy for Mother and Child (CAMAC) has distributed free sanitary pads to 100 girls from Abakwa Community in Kaduna North and Government Secondary, Ungwan Boro, in Chikun Local Council. The Executive Director of CAMAC, Alex Uangbaoje, described the gesture as a continuation of a campaign launched in 2020. During an event yesterday to mark the World Menstrual Hygiene Day at Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, Mrs. Abiodun said it was imperative for the girl to have proper and adequate knowledge about her monthly cycle to remain healthy and attain quality education. Theme of this year’s edition is ‘Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health’. According to her, no young girl should be deprived of education due to ignorance, which had led some girls to make poor personal decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, resulting in early pregnancies and child marriages. She condemned some communities with cultural and religious bias for menstruation, submitting that such had deprived a lot of girls of educational opportunities, impeding women and girls around the world from reaching their full potential and causing a general deterioration in health. She called on entrepreneurs and investors to produce sanitary pads, urging environmentalists to also offer reusable pads. The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, in his goodwill message, appreciated the various initiatives of Mrs. Abiodun towards the wellbeing of Ogun people, particularly women. Meanwhile, PDICH expressed concern that a large number of girls in Nigeria, particularly in rural communities, do not have access to sanitary protection, thus obstructing their access to education, economic and social activities. The Ogun State Police Command has arrested six persons for vandalising railway fittings in the Oteyi area of Ibogun in Ifo Local Government Area of the state. The suspects, Taiwo Ismaila, Egbekunle Abiodun, Abdullah Sanni, Nuru Ibrahim, Wasiu Aweda and Babatunde Sikiru were arrested following information received by the the DPO Ibogun division that vandals were removing some rods along the rail line. Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement, said the Divisional Police Officer Samuel Oladele led his men to the scene where the six suspects were apprehended. Abimbola said 27 rail iron rods, two burning torch with hose, six long cylinders, three short cylinders and one intercolder Volvo Truck with registration number SMK 61 XY were recovered from the suspects. Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, yesterday celebrated his 61st birthday with children at the state owned Stella Obasanjo Children’s Home, Abeokuta, advising them not to allow present circumstances deter them from actualising their life aspirations. Abiodun, who was accompanied by members of the State Executive Council, admonished the children not to settle for anything less in the course of pursuing their life dreams. The governor, who pledged to always make himself available for the children, urged them to improve themselves to attain greater heights in future and become good citizens of the country. He assured that each of the children at the orphanage would be presented with befitting luxury gift items from the state to mark their respective birthdays, beginning from yesterday. The governor presented the orphanage with sets of computers and food items, among others, to the children’s home, while the computer section of the orphanage was also commissioned. In his state broadcast on the scorecard of his administration in the last two years, Governor Abiodun said the administration had recorded giant strides since it came on board two years ago, despite the COVID-19 outbreak and other challenges. Scoring his administration high, the governor said even strident critics of his government concurred that it had made positive impacts in housing, infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, youth empowerment and other critical sectors. “Ours is a promise-keeping administration,” he said, adding that his government would continue to be strategic and deliberate in the allocation of resources. He said that Ogun State under his leadership would continue to prioritise projects that have direct and positive impact on the people and remain frugal in the management of the “commonwealth”. He said his government would sustain the tempo of good governance, asking residents to expect more projects in housing, health and education, among others. The governor said he was at peace with himself and delighted that he stuck with the promise he made to deliver good governance and espouse a government that would be fair, just, equitable, accountable, open, transparent, inclusive and obey the rule of law when he was sworn-in as the fifth civilian governor of Ogun State about 731 days ago. He said: “In my inaugural speech, I made a covenant with God and the good people of Ogun State that I would provide good governance, that is a government that is fair, just, equitable, accountable, open, transparent, inclusive and obeys the rule of law. “Two years down the line, I am proud to say that we are a promise-keeping administration. We have either fulfilled or are fulfilling all our electoral promises in practical terms.” He said his administration did not allow the challenges of COVID-19 and #EndSARS protest to dampen its resolve to deliver on his electoral promises to the people of Ogun State, noting that his first year in office witnessed commencement and completion of some infrastructural projects across the state. Highlighting some projects espoused by his administration in 24 months, Abiodun said no fewer than 34 roads spanning over 270km had been reconstructed, while another set of 41 roads had benefitted from rehabilitation covering over 322 km. He said: “We have worked on over 600km of rural, intra-state, and inter-state roads spread across the three senatorial districts of the state in line with our commitment to even development of the state and the completion of inherited projects that benefit the citizens. “It is important to note that some of the reconstructed roads are Federal Government roads, which we have been compelled to do because citizens do not care about the ownership of the roads, but geo-locate the pains they experience at the point of contact. “Your government is committed to bringing relief to our citizens regardless of the cause or source of the discomfort. “The reconstructed roads include our arterial roads linking us with Lagos State, such as Ray Power Road and Ikola/Navy-Osi-Ota Road in Ota which were commissioned three days ago; Ijebu -Ode to Epe Road, scheduled for commissioning in the next few days; and Atan – Lusada-Agbara Road which was flagged off last month and is due for completion in 15 months. “Of note also is the reconstruction of Abeokuta-Sagamu Interchange, the major road to the state capital. Today, Prince Dapo Abiodun, Ogun State’s fifth democratically elected helmsman, clocks three scores plus one. It is, as usual since 2019 when he mounted the saddle, a double-tiered song and dance, for this is also the day that he clocks two years in office, two solid years of phenomenal feats in a Build Our Future Together movement. Many would say that the celebrations have been richly earned, but Governor Abiodun will let no one forget that being alive and in good health has not come by the arm of the flesh. It has all been by the grace of the Almighty God in whose lustre he (Abiodun) basks, firmly believing that whatever He does, He does so well, and that the future with grace at the steering wheel is beyond assured. This is not merely fortuitous, and the fact that Prince Abiodun reckons that he might one day become a preacher of the gospel is not even under consideration right now. The point is that in the last 61 years, he has, for want of a better phrase, confronted more than a fair share of baptisms of fire. From serious health challenges that almost took the wind out of his sails to perils on the road stoked by men of the underworld; from character assassination by trusted allies to hollow promises by friends intent on nothing but personal gain, however dishonestly obtained; from persecution by the Ogun State political establishment when he threw his hat in the ring to the purveyance of falsehood by opposition desperadoes when, eventually, he made it after a decade of trials. The Iperu-born Prince, business mogul and consummate administrator has seen it all. From 1998 when he got elected to a senatorial position under the defunct United Nigeria Congress Party and late that year when he introduced the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State but bowed to party wishes and supported Otunba Gbenga Daniel for the Oke Mosan job, to 2007 when, again, he bowed to party supremacy and conceded the Senate race, to 2011 and 2015 when he threw his structures behind Senator Ibikunle Amosun to clinch the Ogun top job, Abiodun has faced battle after battle. Success has not come on a silver platter: it has been a case of per ardua ad astra, “through difficulties to the stars,” as the Royal Air Force proclaims in pursuit of triumph. And so, praises and adorations to the Lord of all will occupy the most substantial portions of today as Abiodun exults in the joy of The Lord. Proverbs are the horse on which words ride in the land of Oduduwa, and if a word is lost, it is with proverbs that it is retrieved: character, say the Yoruba, is beauty. And on this point hangs the first aspect of the personality of Governor Abiodun that deserves ample mention. Governor Abiodun is, to say the least, a man of character; an Omoluabi, in the full Yoruba conceptualisation of the term. Entrusted with power, he has not gone haywire, as is the wont of many in this clime. He does not rail at elders in the name of political braggadocio; he does not use dirty and uncouth language even when justly aggrieved; he has not used the instrumentality of state power to constitute himself into a glorified lout. He exudes refinement, and refinement is a critical need of every society’s leadership. Abiodun is not without his own fair share of human foibles. But when leaders come on the scene in this clime, with the value of self-effacement, of discipline, of self-denial and of comportment, they deserve applause. The nation teems with brilliant rogues in Athe corridors of power but Abiodun presents a difference we must embrace if we want true progress. In choosing not to habitually pick quarrels with people or be drawn into the murky waters in which political charlatans swim every day, Abiodun is not being a coward: he is being a man of character. Character is beauty, and as the timeless poet John Keats writes in his epochal poem, Ode on a Grecian Urn: “Beauty is truth, truth beauty—that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” Many in political circles thought that immediately upon assuming office, Abiodun would root out the over 1000 workers clandestinely and improperly thrust on the state’s wage bill in the twilight of the Ibikunle Amosun administration. But their qualms proved to be of no movement: the governor chose to regularise their appointments, together with those of a slew of permanent secretaries. That was a political sermon without sophistry: politics must be without bitterness. Enthralled by his open embrace of all, high-profile politicians in the opposition have cast their lot for Abiodun. The roll call includes a two-time governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole; Alhaja Salmot Badru, a former deputy governor of the state, and Prince Gboyega Isiaka, candidate of the African Democratic Congress and a main challenger during the 2019 governorship election. The list also includes Apostle Dave Salako, a two-time member of the House of Representatives; Elder Joju Fadairo, former state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party; and Chief Pegba Otemolu, former state secretary of the PDP, among others. Unlike some, Dapo Abiodun did not come into office as a career politician. He was already established in the oil and gas and security world before he toed the path of partisan politicking. As many would no doubt recall, it was to him that the Lagos State military government turned in the early 90s when the state was under the siege of robbers, especially from the neighbouring countries. He developed a car-tracking mechanism that saved lives, and the Rapid Response Squad of the state comprising mobile policemen was placed under his control. And since being sworn-in as the fifth democratically elected governor of Ogun State on May 29, 2019, he has left no one in doubt about his administration’s interest and focus on the information superhighway, launching the Ogun TechHUB described as an innovation hub that provides ideal conditions for entrepreneurs to collaborate, flourish and accelerate the growth of their businesses, the Ogun Technopreneurship Programme which has the crucial objective of nurturing high quality ideas in various industries to become tech-start-ups and Tech-SMEs, and the Ogun Innovate Start-up meant to empower people in the state with essential skills needed to succeed in business, to create opportunities for entrepreneurs and to empower the unemployed. It is a fitting tribute to his genius that the ICT industry accounts for more than 21 per cent of Ogun State’s GDP while providing countless job opportunities for the growing educated and creative citizenry. The witness of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is apposite here: “Bridging the digital divide in the state will begin to improve education outcomes and provide opportunities for improved access to education across the state starting from primary to the tertiary level. The digital revolution that this project will bring will be a game-changer in every aspect of the socio-economic life of the state.” Excellence is inevitable in Ogun at this moment, and going forward. The event, the operatives of the security outfit had been carefully selected and trained to secure lives and property, while the state government has provided the outfit with vehicles, motorcycles, communication gadgets, technical back-ups and the political will for an effective take-off and efficient operation. In November last year, he inaugurated the Adire Digital Market at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, advocating the promotion of Nigeria’s indigenous fabrics to the world and affirming that adire fabric could be adopted as national wear for athletes during sporting engagements. The first phase of the Agro-Cargo Airport at Ilisan-Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area of the state would be ready by May next year. The cargo airport, a heteropolis (complete airport city), would have a special agro-processing zone, with factories where raw materials could be turned into final products for export, and would, in fact, be complemented with the first international testing centre where goods would be evaluated for export. Prince Dapo Abiodun comes seasoned with experience from the corporate and political worlds, a man of deep introspection, high intellect and passion to make real, verifiable change in the lives of people; a game-changer built for the toughest of times, a technocrat with a difference; a master administrator fully cognizant of the place of a stellar cast of committed individuals in driving developmental agenda, the values of teamwork, the gains of data-driven governance and, of course, the rewards of perseverance. Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun has approved the employment of two security guards for every primary and secondary school in the state due to the rising insecurity in the nation. Abiodun stated this during the 7th Quadrennial (15th) State Delegates’ Conference of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT ) held in Abeokuta. The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abayomi Arigbabu, stated that the measure was to strengthen the security of the students, teachers, and schools. A Professor of Mathematics from Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof AbdulAkeem Agboola has been accused of frustrating efforts made by the Academic staff Establishment Unit of the institution to investigate him for allegedly falsifying his age. It was gathered that the Academic staff Establishment Unit’s periodic review discovered that Agboola did not submit his birth certificate, M.sc and Ph.D certificate to the school’s registry. Findings however revealed that this prompted the unit to write Agboola in an internal memo, asking him to submit his missing credentials to its building. The internal memo dated 13th April, 2021 which was obtained by our reporter gave Agboola till 16th April, 2021 to submit the missing documents. It was however discovered that the Professor who replied the memo in another document sighted by this reporter described the memo by the school’s establishment unit as “highly embarrassing and worrisome. Agboola explained in the memo that since he joined the University in 1994, he had participated in at least two staff auditing exercises where originals and photocopies of his certificates were submitted apart from his PhD certificate which he submitted in 2002. The professor in his reply noted that all other documents were submitted in 1994 and all have since been in his personal file with his department, college and register without any complain from the registry. The academician however obliged the unit’s request by sending the requested certificates as sighted in a documents obtained by our reporter. Agboola in the memo said, ” Your memo added April 13 2021 referenced FUNAAB /R/ASP.467/1/207 on the subject is referred. “It is highly embarrassing and worrisome for me to be written that I did not submit my birth certificate to the registry. Since I joined the services in 1994, I have participated in at least two staff auditing exercises where my originals credentials were shown to the panels and photocopies submitted. Apart from my PhD certificate which was submitted in 2002, all my other credentials were submitted in 1994 and they have since been inside my personal file in the department, college and register without any complain from the registry. “I hope someone somewhere is not tempering and playing foul with my personal file in the registry. “Consequent on your request I hereby resubmitted photocopies of following documents to the registry, birth certificate, M.Sc and PhD certificate” The Establishment Unit in its response in another internal memorandum dated 26th April, 2021 and sighted by this reporter however said Agboola’s response to its former memo was “incorrect and needless”. The unit stressed that Agboola submitted a “To whom it may concern letter” as evidence for the completion of his M.sc when he was employed as an assistant lecturer in 1994. The unit also noted that Agboola never submitted a doctoral certificate and birth certificate. Agboola was asked to submit any contrary evidence to the claim by the unit. The Unit noted that after a quick review of the submitted credentials, it discovered a lot of inconsistency in the names on the birth certificate to his doctoral certificate, calling for an explanation from Agboola. The Unit said it also observed that the name on the birth certificate is not in tandem with 60th birthday celebration the Professor had in public place. The Professor was however asked to forward explanation for the inconsistency on the name on the credentials submitted to the Establishment Unit’s building not later than April 29, 2021. The Memo partly read “that the university registry in it’s periodic review, requests for any documents found missing in individual files of staff. “So, the allegation that your files is being tempered with is not only incorrect,but needless. “That you submitted a “To whom it may concern letter as evidence for completion of your M.Sc when employed as assistant lecturer in 1994 not a proper certificate. “There was never a form of submission of any doctoral certificate if you have any contrary evidence kindly submit it “There was no evidence of birth certificate submitted “In any way a quick review of the credentials submitted have shown various inconsistent in the names on them right from your birth certificate, though your doctoral degree certificate. “Consequently, there is immediate need for you to explain these inconsistency as it cannot be safely said that various names on different certificate belong to the same person “It also observed that the date on the birth certificate is not in tandem with the 60th birthday celebration you had recently had in public space “You are expected to forward the explanation for the inconsistencies in the name on your credentials to the academic staff establishment unit not later than Thursday April 29,2021”. Findings by this reporter revealed that the institution has set up an Investigative panel to look into the alleged age falsification by the professor. Further findings however revealed that Prof. Agboola has been frustrating the effort of the panel. It was gathered that the professor was against some of the people in the panel and has allegedly refused to face the panel since it was set up. One of the panel members who pleaded anonymity said, “We suppose to sit last week on Prof. Agboola matter, but he has refused to show up. “He is frustrating the panel so that we can change some people and put his own people there.” When contacted on the allegations leveled against him, Prof Agboola insisted that he was not involved in any age falsification case. Operatives of Ogun State Police Command have arrested four members of an armed robbery gang, who hijacked a trailer load of Golden Penny Flour, along Shagamu-Ijebu Ode expressway on the 16th of April 2021. The suspects, according to a statement issued by the command image maker, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, included Eze Anthony Sopruchuckwu, Eze Chijoke Edeh, Olalekan Ayodele Muritala, and Samuel Johnson were all arrested following a report lodged at Ikenne divisional headquarters. Oyeyemi added that, it was reported at Ikenne Police station that a trailer, with registration number ANG 57 LG, loaded with 600 bags of Golden Penny flour and driven by one Ahmed Tiamiyu was hijacked along the expressway, while the driver and his motor boy were taken into the bush, where their hands were tied to their backs and their mouths sellotaped, before taken away the truck and the flours”. Upon the report, the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, directed that the case be transferred to Special Enquiry Bureau at state headquarters Eleweran for discreet investigation. Oyeyemi added that DSP Ade Akiti led squad swung into action and embarked on technical and intelligence-based investigation that paid off, when one of the suspects was traced to Ikorodu in Lagos State and promptly arrested. “His arrest led to the arrest of three others, while 175 bags of Golden Penny flour were recovered from the warehouse of the gang leader, Eze Anthony”. No fewer than 1,382 aged and 380 persons living with disabilities in Ogun State have been selected from the State Social Register of poor and vulnerable to receive Federal Government’s COVID-19 cash transfer, to cushion the effect of the pandemic. The State Coordinator, Ogun State Operations Coordinating Units (Ogun SOCU), Mr. ‘Tunde Adebiyi, who disclosed this in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said the initiative was a National Social Safety Nets programme, aimed at improving the beneficiary’s livelihood with a stipend of N5,000 for the period of six months. Adebiyi, in a statement signed by his Press Officer, Mrs. Aderonke Dada, stated that the beneficiaries were drawn from five Local Government Areas (LGAs), namely Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu North and Ijebu-East, noting that enumerators, who are engaged in data gathering would do appropriate verification to ensure that the fund get to the right beneficiaries. “The COVID-19 cash transfer to poor and vulnerable will commence in Ogun State as soon as all necessary processes of enrollment of beneficiaries are completed. The beneficiaries have been selected from the State Social Register and they are from five Local Government Areas in the State”, he said. Mr. Adebiyi who added that another social intervention programme tagged ‘Rapid Response Register (RRR), the sensitisation on which would commence soon in the State, said recipients would be drawn from 33 wards across 14 LGAs in the State.
