A 38-year-old woman, Titilayo Benson who had been in custody at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos state for about ten years over alleged fight with her friend and housemate Blessing Imade, but was not arraing in court , on Thursday regained her freedom.

Penpushing reports that, the fight between the duo has it that, Imade cut Benson with a razor blade, and in retaliation she stabbed her (Imade) with a broken bottle which led to death after a month, while still receiving treatment for the injury she sustained.

The suspect was subsequently, arrested and detained for months at the State Criminal Intelligence Department (SCID) Panti, before being charged before an Ebutte-Meta Magistrate Court for causing the death of another, a matter which the magistrate court has no jurisdiction over.

Penpushing further reports that, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, set Benson free following a plea bargain between the state government and the defendant,when a representative of the Directorate of Public Prosecution told the court that she has been in custody for over 10 years without arraignment

‘A murder charge with suit number LD/92/13 was filed against Mrs Benson before Mrs Taiwo’s court. However, she was never produced before the judge, who later struck out the case in 2017 for lack of diligent prosecution. Mrs Benson was never arraigned, tried, or convicted by any court. Yet, she remained in prison for years.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has described workers in the State Civil Service as one of the “best productive hands” in the country that had shown genuine commitment towards the realisation of the ‘Building our Future Together’ agenda of his administration.

Abiodun gave this commendation yesterday during the flag-off of ‘Know Your Health Status’ programme held in commemoration of the year 2021 Public Service Day at the Arcade Ground, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.


In a statement by the Press Officer, Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Passover Adeshina, the governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, congratulated the workforce for witnessing the celebration and emphasised the need for the workers to regularly check their health status to remain fit and productive for themselves and the state.

Abiodun noted that majority of the workers were dedicated to duty, affirming that government had been able to achieve much through their commitment to the implementation of impactful policies and programmes of the state government.

“Ogun State civil servants are the best one can get anywhere and do not allow any unscrupulous individual sabotage the existing standard and integrity of the civil service. I want to advise you to do regular check-up to detect early, any ailment that may affect your work for the progress of the state,” he said.

In Nigeria, women whose husbands have died can face stigma, suspicion and families determined to take away what little they have left.

In Nigeria, stories abound of widows being forced to drink the water used to wash their husband’s corpse – in the belief that it will kill them if they are guilty of causing his death – or of being made to declare their innocence before a local deity.

The stigma, or outright rejection, a woman who has lost her husband can face often leaves her abandoned. Superstition causes other women to believe they may lose their husbands if they associate with a widow, while some men fear they, too, will die.

Such stigmatising practices have been outlawed in Nigeria since 2015 under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law and are subject to a 500,000 naira ($1,220) fine or two years in prison, but so far only 23 out of Nigeria’s 36 states have formally adopted these laws into their own statutes, and cultural practices continue regardless.

Many must abide by strict traditional practices in widowhood such as cutting their hair short, wearing only dark clothes and remaining isolated at home for a period of 41 days, while others lose their property as it is claimed by their husband’s relatives.

While Nigeria’s laws of inheritance provide for women to inherit from their husbands, many defer to local, traditional practices instead. These can be deeply patriarchal. A widow’s fate, therefore, can depend entirely on the goodwill of her late husband’s family.

Elizabeth Adebowale: ‘His mother became hostile to me’
When Samson Adebowale died from liver disease in July 2012 at the age of 39, he left behind his wife, Elizabeth, now 44, and two small children aged three and five.

He also left behind a family dispute.

In May 2012, Samson had complained of fever and stomach pain. Like many low-income Nigerians who wish to avoid expensive hospital tests and appointments, he first went to the local pharmacist who gave him some medication for the pain. But he did not get better.

Days later, the couple received a diagnosis at the hospital – liver disease. During the next two months, they frantically tried four different hospitals, but none of them could help him. They spent all their money on medical bills and their joint business, selling mobile phone top-up cards, suffered.

There is no universal healthcare system in Nigeria. The government does subsidise low-cost insurance policies, but even these are out of the reach of many poor people, particularly those who earn a daily wage rather than a monthly or annual salary.

In July, Samson asked his wife and two of his siblings to take him to a prayer mountain – a sacred space on a mountaintop where prayers and other religious practices take place – in a last bid for a miracle cure. He died there. Elizabeth was distraught, and her relationship with her husband’s family quickly turned sour.

“His mother became very hostile to me. She said terrible things to me; that fate had decided that I would be a widow,” says Elizabeth. She did not retaliate, she says, because of the traditional expectation that women must always be respectful to their mothers-in-law. Then, Samson’s family demanded that Elizabeth sell the couple’s land on which they had started construction work to build a new home.

“His brother told me that they wanted to buy land where they could bury him in Abeokuta. So, they had to sell the land we owned together.” While Samson’s brother had no legal rights over the land, his demand came from a traditional belief in the community that a man’s land is owned by his brothers.

Samson’s brother seized some of his other property, including some bicycles, his widow says. However, she refused to sell the land because it was all that her husband had left behind. Instead, she wanted him buried there so that their children would be able to visit his grave and still have the land as an inheritance.

She moved swiftly, asking gravediggers to dig a grave on the plot. This made it difficult for his family because there is a traditional belief among Yoruba people that once a grave is dug, the person for whom it was intended has to be buried there; not doing so could spell bad luck for the family of the deceased.

They were surprised at her refusal to give in to their demands, Elizabeth says, but ultimately they backed down. She has not heard from them since.

To support her children, she worked as an attendant at a petrol station and learned how to sew clothes and school bags. She used the income to send her children to school.

“Things were very tough for us but I know that as long as I have my hands and good health, we will not suffer,” she says. “And I have tried all that I could to provide good food for my children and send them to school.”

Five years after her husband’s death, she was pressured by people – particularly congregants at her church – to remarry in order to provide a father figure for her children. She did so and had another child, but the marriage only lasted two years because, she says, her second husband mistreated her.

Elizabeth believes her status as a widow enabled him to treat her badly. She left with all three children last year and is now gradually picking up the pieces of her life all over again – something made harder by the fact she has been diagnosed with heart disease.

Still, she says, she finds ways to stay happy.

“These days, I sing. I bought a secondhand keyboard and I am learning to play. You know that thing that they say about what does not kill you making you stronger? I have realised that I have to remain strong for my children,” Elizabeth says, smiling.

Alice Ibitoye: ‘I had to stay indoors for 41 days’

As a child, Alice Ibitoye, 54, dreamed of learning to design and sew beautiful clothes for people to wear. In June 1982, when she was just 15, however, she started suffering intense pain in her left leg and developed a fever. This condition continued on and off for 11 years before she was finally diagnosed with osteomyelitis, an infection of the bone, in her leg. The condition requires surgery, which Alice has never been able to afford.

Her dreams of being a fashion designer died because she could no longer use the pedal to work her sewing machine and found walking to source materials at markets too difficult. She resorted to setting up a small business selling nylon packaging and bubble wrap instead.

In 1997, she met her husband, a Ghanaian taxi driver named Abdulmumin, who not only helped her to transport the goods for her business but also supported her financially once they were married.

But, in 2006, nine years into their marriage, Abdulmumin died in a car accident while driving his taxi, leaving her alone with two children, aged four and 16 months. As was required by his family’s beliefs, following his death, Alice cut her hair short and confined herself to her house for 41 days.

“If you refuse to do it, people may think that you are responsible for his death. They say, ‘Why should you be going out immediately after his death? Why should you be looking good when your husband’s body is not cold in the earth yet?’” Alice explains.

But as a daily wage earner, this made life extremely difficult for Alice and her children.

Alice asked her husband’s family for help but they refused unless she surrendered custody of her children to them. “I did not want to release my children to anyone else. I would rather raise them myself even if we are hungry,” she says.

Due to her health condition and a lack of support from her late husband’s family, Alice was forced to rely on donations from well-wishers in the neighbourhood. Fifteen years later, she still struggles to pay her rent and the landlord has threatened her family with eviction several times.

“I have been served a quit notice by the landlord more than five times,” she says. “Once I am able to pay half of a year, the landlord tempers justice with mercy. The last one was not funny. He almost did not want to listen to my plea again.”

Alice’s children, now aged 19 and 16, cannot continue their education beyond secondary school because there is no money to pay for it. Meanwhile, her leg has worsened. The skin is scarred and pus-filled and she walks with a limp using a walking stick. The last time she visited the hospital, she was asked to pay 350,000 naira (around $850) for the surgery she requires.

“Where will I get that kind of money?” She asks.

Abimbola Ogundare: ‘His family was ashamed of his suicide’

At first, March 13, 2016, was a Sunday like any other for Abimbola Ogundare, now 44. She bathed her children, dressed them in their Sunday outfits and headed to church. Usually, her husband, Wale, would join them later on. But on this Sunday he never arrived.

The next time Abimbola saw him, he was dead. He had hanged himself. His church clothes were still on the bed, untouched. The couple had been married for 16 years and had six children. It was one of their sons who first found his father. He had nightmares for months after.

It was Wale’s fourth suicide attempt. “Looking back, I think that he was depressed but he never talked about it. He would be sad, wear a long look, and no matter how much I tried to ask him, he never responded,” Abimbola recalls. Her husband had been struggling to find work as a painter.

In Nigeria, suicide is taboo. It is common for people to speculate openly about whether the widow was responsible. For two years, Wale’s body remained in the mortuary: His family wanted nothing to do with his burial after they learned how he had died and Abimbola felt it would be disrespectful to bury him without their participation.

“Because of their beliefs about suicide, his family wanted him to be buried at the site of the suicide. This was not possible because it was a rented apartment. So, they left everything to me – they wanted nothing to do with it. I did everything myself. I raised the money to pay the 1,400 naira ($3.40) weekly mortuary bill, to pay for his burial ground. Till today, they do not know where he is buried,” she laments.

Abimbola’s own health began to deteriorate after her husband’s death. “I could not sleep for days,” she says. “I started using sleeping medications just to get some hours of sleep. I was also having continuous headaches.

“I would be going out on the road and thinking I could hear him calling my name. I was also having terrible dreams.”

The family had to leave the house they were renting. “The landlord believed that his death was a bad omen and he wanted nothing to do with it,” Abimbola explains. “My neighbours were calling me mad because I would be hearing him calling my name.”

Every Friday after his death, for the two years his body remained at the mortuary, Abimbola’s church pastors organised special prayers for her children so that they would not die too. This is because, in Nigerian culture, many people believe that when someone takes their own life, they will return after death to carry off members of their family. Abimbola says she visited her husband’s body at the mortuary to plead with him not to take her or their children with him.

He was only buried when the Oyo state government ordered families with relatives at the mortuary to come and take them away – something that happens every so often when mortuaries become over-full.

It has now been five years since Wale’s death, and Abimbola is still struggling financially. She says there are days when they do not eat three meals and months when she has to beg at her children’s schools because she cannot afford the fees. However, her children have helped her to move on from the sadness over time.

“It is my children that make me happy. We play together. I may not have a husband but I am happy with my children. They are my husband now,” she says, smiling.

Folasade Johnson: ‘I had to start my life over again’

For 12 months after her 58-year-old husband’s death in a road accident, Folasade Johnson, then just 26, kept her hair short, dressed only in dark clothes and did not wear any makeup or jewellery. The accident, 16 years ago, nearly claimed the lives of Folasade and her 10-month-old daughter as well, but for the kindness of a passing stranger who took them both to hospital.

“It was as if I was watching my world collapse right before my eyes,” Folasade, now 42, recalls.

Folasade and her husband, Feyisara Joseph, had started a poultry business together but, after his death, his family were of the opinion that the business was solely his. They went to all of the couple’s clients and took the money Folasade was owed.

Then, they allowed Folosade to take a few possessions from her home before removing everything else from the rented accommodation. They just wanted her gone, she says.

Folasade had to start all over again. Unable to afford rent, she moved in with her godmother.

“With a loan from my godmother, I was able to gradually find my footing again,” she says. “Without my godmother’s kindness and that loan, it would have been really tough for me to start again.” It was this that inspired her to start the Hope Soars Foundation for Widows in Ibadan, Nigeria in 2016.

“I wanted to help women find the hope to rise again, beyond their widowhood experiences. They do not have to go through all that I went through,” she says.

Through the foundation, Folasade helps widows train in new skills as well as get medical checkups, loans and food, which she hopes should make their burdens easier to bear.

Five years after the foundation started, she says it has helped about 3,000 widows, including by sourcing scholarship programmes for 10 children, while about 40 widows have used loans from the foundation.

“Everything that happens happens for a reason. I think I experienced widowhood so that I could make other women’s experiences easier,” says Folasade.

Monsurat Omobonike: ‘My husband died, then my son died too’

In May 2003, when Monsurat Omobonike was 35, her husband died after suffering a stroke. A security official at Lagos Airport, Usman Abu was 60. The couple had married when Monsurat was a teenager after the early deaths of her parents left her responsible for five younger siblings at the age of 13.

Their marriage was happy, she says. “He was a very kind man who treated me and my children well. He always brought back goodies for his children from his job at the airport,” she remembers.

For the 41-day mourning period, she was secluded within the house with her four children, aged between eight and 16.

After her husband’s death, things became really difficult for the family. Her husband had been an only child, so had no siblings who could help her. Monsurat’s catering business went through a tough time when her unlicensed stall was removed from the university campus it was located at. She was forced to resort to menial jobs such as cleaning and doing laundry to survive.

After her own parents died, Monsurat, who is now 53, had been unable to finish school and she wanted better for her own children, particularly her daughters.

“Isn’t a girl also a human being deserving of education? Look at me now, just doing small small work, only to survive,” she says. “That was when I told myself that my own children must go to school, that they must have an education so that they will be better.”

Once, when things were particularly tough, she sold a plot of land to pay her daughter’s school fees. Her only son, Yusuf, was good at football and was able to make a successful career out of it.

After he secured a place with a local football club in Oyo State, he promised to support his mother. “I will buy you land. I will build you a house. I will buy you a car,” he told her. He bought the land and was paying his sisters’ school fees but then tragedy struck.

Yusuf, too, died in November 2020, after collapsing during training. His mother says she never found out what caused his death. He was 30 years old.

“His death made me remember his father’s death all over again,” Monsurat says. “It was as if I was stripped naked two times. He was my only hope; he left me hopeless.”

Authorities of the Oyo State Police Command, on Monday, disclosed that three men have been arrested for shooting six cows dead and injuring 13 others cows at Eruwa, in Ibarapa East Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects were apprehended, on Sunday, inside the bush at Sunbare area, along old Ibadan-Eruwa road while attempting to chase Fulani herders from the forest to graze their cattle.

According to a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), “on Sunday 20th June 2021, several gunshots were reportedly fired in a bush at Sunbare Area, along old Ibadan road Eruwa, causing fear and panic in the hearts of residence.”

The suspects were apprehended, on Sunday, inside the bush at Sunbare area, along old Ibadan-Eruwa road while attempting to chase Fulani herders from the forest to graze their cattle.

“Found in their possession were the following exhibits: three fane guns, two daggers, one cutlass, two head-lamps, charms, three I.D cards and one Access ATM card belonging to Ajibodun Opeyemi, one lighter, ten expended cartridges and two live cartridges.”

“Conduction of an on-the-spot assessment at daybreak led to the discovery that the gunshots were from an attack launched against a group of Fulani herders, which resulted in the killing of six cows and wounding of thirteen 13) others.

“Upon interrogation, fact gathered revealed that the attack was perpetrated to wade off the herders from grazing in the forests in Eruwa environs. Efforts to apprehend other accessories to the crime is at top gear.”

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ngozi Onadeko fdc, wishes to assure the general public about the Command’s unflinching commitment toward ensuring that the lot of justice is preserved as every hand involved in the perpetration of this dastardly act is brought to book.

A police sergeant attached to the Igbeba Police Station in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has been shot dead by suspected cultists.

The killing of the sergeant occurred barely four days after an Inspector of police was killed by kidnappers, who abducted four Chinese workers at a village in Odeda.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the killing of the sergeant to our correspondent on Sunday.

Oyeyemi said the deceased, whose identity was not disclosed, was targeted and attacked around 11pm on Saturday.

The police spokesman told our correspondent that the cop was not on duty when he was killed by those he identified as cultists.

He said, “It is true that a policeman was killed by suspected cultists. But the policeman was not on duty; he was off duty at the time.

“I think he was going somewhere between 10.30pm and 11pm on Saturday when he was killed. He was no longer on duty at the time of the incident.

“A suspect has been arrested. The suspect happens to be a member of the Eiye Confraternity.”

Oyeyemi added that a manhunt had been launched for other members of the gang.

A man identified as Bello Olatunji has been accused of urinating openly in a neighbour's compound and beating up a female neighbour, Adefunke Olanrewaju for complaining about it, in Ogun State.

The incident happened on May 25, 2021, at 3, Olanrewaju Avenue, Peaceland Estate, Ifesowapo, Lambe area of the state

But since the incident was reported at the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and Ajuwon Police Station, SaharaReporters learnt that traditional chiefs in the community have been using their influence to shield the suspect from facing justice, describing their clique as well connected.

It was learnt that the Iyaloja of the community even went to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development after the matter was reported there, to truncate the course of justice.

"We even reported to Ministry of Woman Affairs and Social Development in Abeokuta, the Iyaloja still went there again and said there is nothing we can do about the assault," Adefunke said.

Narrating the event, Adefunke said, "I was in my compound around 8 am when I saw a man, Bello Olatunji, from a welding workshop beside my house urinating in my compound, so I approached to caution him.

"He started hurling abuses at me. I rebuked him for that and was about to go back to the water I was fetching when he slapped me and started punching me. He punched me several times. Before people could intervene, my nose had started bleeding. I reported the matter at Ajuwon Police Station and was referred to the hospital for first aid treatment and he footed the N4,500 bill.


"Later, my dad called to tell me to withdraw the case because the landlords in our estate had been calling and begging him to drop the case. So, I did. My dad did that because he had not seen my pictures. I later had to send a petition letter to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta days after when he started bragging about that he intentionally beat me up because I was too proud.

"I was invited to Abeokuta last week and an invitation letter was sent to him too. He then reported himself to the Baale's palace so they could beg me. I was invited to a meeting at the Baale's palace and the chiefs begged me to withdraw the case so we could settle it internally in the area and that he would foot the medical bills. I explained to them that I couldn't and why told them why. I said he should appear in Abeokuta on the given date and time.

"But one of the chiefs, the Iyaloja, said no police could arrest him if he did not appear. She said I should take the case to court if that's what I wanted. She said they have connections in Abeokuta and that I would be the one to get tired after spending unnecessary cash on transport fare and that he wouldn't even appear. Truly he didn't go to Abeokuta; they are already trying to use their influence.

"One of the chiefs said if it's court case I want, I'll meet them there, even if up to the Supreme Court. The chiefs, the man, and his wife have been spreading false information about me that I have had an ailment since I was a kid that makes me bleed from the nose.

"They said he only slapped me but that I was trying to implicate him, which is a very big lie. I've been in the area for close to 20 years and I had never had issues with anyone. Everyone knows I've always been peaceful all these years. I really wish to get justice because I've not able to work since the incident happened, I've been staying indoors."


When called for his reaction, Olatunji said he had not honoured the invitation of the women affairs and social development ministry because he was ill.

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three suspected land grabbers,Wasiu Adenuga,Michael John and Moruf Alaba for alleged robbery at Itusokun quarter in Odogbolu , located in Odogbolu local government area of the state.

Penpushing reports that the Command Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi who confirmed said the suspects were arrested, following a report lodged at Odogbolu Divisional Headquarters by one Kemi Olukoya.

The police spokesman said the lady reported that while she was at her new site supervising construction workers, a group of boys numbering about eight invaded the site, and started shooting sporadically and chased the workers out of the site.

Penpushing further reports that, she told the police that, the hoodlums also snatched her bag containing sum of N500,000 and her mobile phone valued at N40,000 at gun point.

‘Upon the report, the DPO Odogbolu Division SP Adeniyi Awokunle mobilized his men, and moved to the scene, on getting there, the hoodlums were seen escaping through the nearby bush, they were hotly chased and one of them by name Wasiu Adenuga was subsequently apprehended’, Oyeyemi said.

Penpushing also reports that, he said further combing of the bush led to the arrest of two others namely; Michael John and Moruf Alaba, while three Bajaj motorcycle they used for their operation were also impounded.

The Command Public Relations Officer, said the victim had identified the three of them as members of the gang that attacked her and her workers,adding that the Commissioner of Police Edward Ajogun has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.

Meanwhile, Oyeyemi added that the police commissioner also directed that the remaining members of the gang be hunted for and brought to justice.

Pandemonium broke out on Saturday following the deadly clashes between rival members of two cult groups in Ijebu-Ode leaving a policeman and one other dead.

Residents of the area especially in Igbeba, Lagos garage and other areas scampered for safety as the cultists unleashed violence on one another.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that there had been killings in many parts of Ijebuland by the cultists over leadership tussle and other issues.

It was further gathered that violence erupted on Saturday when one of the members of the cult groups was killed by the rival group.

Ijebu-Ode had been enmeshed in a renewed violence after some members and leaders were arrested by policemen.

Attempts to bring the situation under control led to the death of a policeman attached to Area Command, Igbeba.

In a bid to encourage vaccination against COVID-19, free pre-rolled marijuana joints were offered to residents who have received the vaccine by the state of Washington, United states.

Officials of the Washington state Liquor and Cannabis board (LCB), said they had “received multiple requests from cannabis retail licensees to engage in promotions to support state vaccination efforts”.

The board on June 7, therefore, gave state licensed cannabis retailers permission to offer free ‘weed’ to “adult consumers who receive a vaccination at an in-store vaccination clinic”.

According to the LCB, the promotion, which it called “Joint for Jabs” was aimed at supporting the state’s vaccination efforts.

The board ran the promotion from June 7 through June 12 for adults 21 and older but said consumers could only claim the complimentary joint from the retail location on the same day they received the jab.

This offer came just a few weeks after the LCB offered free beer, wine and cocktails to those who got vaccinated.

Five people lost their lives on Wednesday as a result of a tanker explosion that occured at Ajilete axis Owode-Idiroko road in Ogun State.

It was reported that two other persons sustained injuries due to the explosion.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the tanker conveying 33,000, litres of diesel fell and spilt its content while descending a sloppy road, and immediately went up in flames.

Confirming the incident, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Commander, Idiroko Unit, Akinwunmi Olaluwoye, said the accident happened at about 8:15 am.

He said further that the five victims were burnt to death while a bus and a motorcycle were equally burnt into ashes due to the explosion.

He said “No vehicle rammed into the tanker. The tank dropped off from the back of the tanker and exploded. The number of persons involved are seven, five dead, two injured.

“The driver had taken away the head of the truck as at the time we got there. But we have allowed policemen to take charge and handle that aspect.”

The Department of State Security in Ogun on Wednesday arraigned six suspected kidnappers before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, the state capital.

The suspects were arrested last April at different points in the state and could not be brought before the Court due to the strike embarked on by the Judiciary Staff Association of Nigeria (JUSUN).

They appeared before Magistrate Dehinde Dipeolu, of Court 2, on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit a felony with kidnapping contrary to section 32 of the prohibition of forcible occupation of landed property, armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and other anti-violence and related offences Law of Ogun State, 2006.

The suspects Aaron Jeremaya; Abubakar Shehu; Mohammed Umar; Abdullahi Umar; Abubakar Mamman and Mohammed Sanni Abubakar were also charged for unlawful possession of firearms contrary to section 27 (1) (b) of the Firearms Act Cap 28 Law of Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The Prosecuting Counsel, Emmanuel Zamba, informed the court that a Motion Ex-parte dated 16th of June, 2021, was filed before alongside an 8 paragraph affidavit deposed to by ones Oluwaseyi Ajayi, praying the Court for the remand of the suspects for another 60 days pending the Directorate of Public Prosecution advice on the matter.

Magistrate Dipeolu granted the request of the Prosecuting Counsel on the ground that the application merited all the prayers contained therein.

He ordered that the suspects be remanded for the next 60 days at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Oba, for the first instance.

Dipeolu, thereafter adjourned till August 17th pending the DPP legal advice.

A 35-year-old housewife, Blessing Agoro, has been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for allegedly selling her two daughters, Semilore Agoro (four), and Deborah Agoro (two).

The suspect was arrested, following a report lodged at Redeemed Camp divisional headquarters by her husband, Oluwaseyi Agoro.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Oyeyemi said the husband reported that when he returned from travelling last week Tuesday he couldn’t find his two daughters.

The PPRO said, “The man stated further that all efforts to make his wife tell him the whereabouts of the children proved abortive, hence his report.

“Upon the report, the DPO Redeemed Camp division, CSP Alabi Akinjide, detailed his detectives to apprehend the suspect, who had already been with the camp’s code of conduct department.

“On interrogation, the suspect explained to the police that her husband left home for the past two years, and while he was away, she found it difficult to cater for the two children with her other two children she had for another man.

“She stated further that while she was contemplating on what to do, one Kolawole Imoleayo introduced her to a couple in Port Harcourt who was in need of children. She sold the two daughters to the couple at the rate of three hundred thousand naira (N300,000).

“Her confession led to the arrest of the said intermediary, Kolawole Imoleayo. They are both assisting the police in their investigation.”

The Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.

Oyeyemi added that Ajogun directed that the children must be rescued and brought back to their parents as soon as possible.

Ogun State Government’s effort at ensuring food sufficiency, industrialisation and economic development through agriculture, has continued to yield results as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), recognised the state as a focal point for the cultivation of cocoa in Nigeria.

Governor of CBN, Dr. Godwin Emefiele, disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting for cocoa development initiative, organised by Ogun State Government in partnership with the apex bank at Ogun TechHub, Kobape road, Abeokuta.

Emefiele, represented by the Head, Financial Development, at the Abeokuta branch of the bank, Dr. (Mrs.) Yemisi Olukoya, said Ogun State Government had met CBN’s conditions of land evaluation and already taking steps towards inter-cropping of plantain with cocoa, as well as land allocation to farmers, applauding the state government for facilitating the inclusion of the cocoa development programme in its agricultural policy.

He challenged the stakeholders to make cocoa farming more attractive for youths in the state and ensure a good irrigation system to avoid loss of farm produce during dry season, urging that private investors and partners should be linked to the programme to make it more lucrative.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Adeola Odedina, noted that the state government’s proactive approach to the cocoa development programme was borne out of its realisation of the huge contributions of cocoa to the economy of the country, as well as the immense value-chain opportunities abound.

“Government tested lands and took steps to facilitate plantain co-cropping with cocoa at no cost to the farmers, and is ready to allocate lands to them for cultivation, in a bid to ensure job creation, especially for youths. With this initiative, the private sector will be linked to CBN to enhance value addition, rejuvenation of old farms and establishment of new cocoa farms”, Odedina said.

Speaking in an interview, the Chairman of the Cocoa Farmers’ Association (CAFAN), Apostle Solomon Williams, appreciated the government for the laudable initiative, while the Onidogo of Idogo, Oba Adewale Olubiyi, prayed for the success of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s vision of turning around the state’s economy.

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has urged Nigerians to immortalise the late acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, pushing asides all negative and divisive forces and policies.

He stated this in his message to the people of the State delivered during the celebration of the 2021 Democracy Day, held at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto Abeokuta, on Saturday, that the time has come in the history of the country when everyone must join forces to build bridges and demolish fences.

The governor said all quest for self-determination and other sectarian agitations must be shelved for one indivisible country.

“We must not forget that, as individuals, we can also change the course of history, like MKO did, even at this point in time. We must all note that each and every one of us, our actions and inactions, will either propel the country forward or fuel the already tense situation. Our country should rise and fulfil its full potentials in the comity of nations.

“The best way to immortalize and celebrate MKO Abiola and June 12, particularly, at this time of our national life, is to build bridges and demolish fences.

“We should think Nigerian and not sectarian. We should not limit that mandate and success to 1993. We must ensure that the hope is kept alive. We cannot afford to bring down our country or show despair in our future. Truly, Nigeria shall rise again.

Fresh facts have emerged on the circumstances surrounding the alleged disappearance of some residents of Abaren community in Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State by unknown gunmen two weeks ago.

Reports of invasion of the community and abduction of some of the residents went viral on social media, with calls to Police authorities to beam their searchlight to Abaren, owing to the state of insecurity.

However, when the Ogun State Community leader and Baale in Council, Chief Olukayode Akoni was contacted, he described as untrue report of the invasion of the community and subsequent abduction of some persons.

Rather, he clarified that operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics, SWAT team from Abuja were in the community to effect the arrest of some persons, following a petition to that effect.

Describing the report on the abduction of some persons as handiwork of some mischief makers, he explained that “ Our findings showed that the policemen from SWAT made the necessary entry with the local police and even visited traditional rulers in the area before and after the arrest.

”There was a petition against one Ola and others and the police came to arrest them, as a result of an attack on Abaren on April 22, 2021 by over fifty armed men, who were aided by a senior policeman in the area . That attack was the second by the group in six months.

“The SWAT team mediated because of the judiciary workers’ strike. By the time they ( policemen ) arrived in Abaren , there was already an announcement on the radio and social media by the suspects that they had been kidnapped .

“ They were taken to Abuja, interrogated and released after an undertaking was signed that there would not be any problem in Abaren .”

“ For the avoidance of doubt, we would like the Inspector General of Police, or the Commissioner Police, Ogun State to investigate not just the false reports of kidnapping but also investigate any case of violence in the village”, he stated.
