Crime / Ogun Robber Poses As Passenger, Attempts To Snatch Motorcycle With Toy Gun by OmoOgunOriginal(f): 8:12am On Sep 13, 2022
The Ogun State owned security outfit, So-Safe Corps has arrested a suspected robber while attacking a commercial motorcyclist in Idiroko area of the state.

The 22-year-old suspect, Ibrahim Oluwaseun, a resident of Olorogbo Compound, Asheko/Ibatefin Area of Ipokia Local Government, Ogun State, was arrested on Friday by operatives of the So-Safe Corps.

The suspect was said to have pretended to be a passenger, as he hired the okada rider, Bamidele Mujeeb, to convey him from Aferiku Street, Idiroko to Obalana Street, along Bebe road, leading to the Republic of Benin.

The State Commander of the So-Safe, Soji Ganzallo, who disclosed this in a statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Corps, Moruf Yusuf, said the suspect, who was on a robbery mission, later instructed the bike man to go through a narrow route that leads to the same destination.

The suspect then brought out a gun, later discovered to be a toy gun, and commanded that the rider surrender himself and the bike or lose his life.

"At the scene, the So-Safe patrol team, Idiroko division, led by CSC Abdulkareem Muhammad, witnessed the funny act, pounced on the suspect and got him arrested. The suspect confessed to the crime during preliminary investigation," the suspect said.

He added that the suspect, his victim, the motorcycle and the recovered toy gun have all been handed over to the police at Idiroko divisional headquarters for further investigation and likely prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Ipokia Area Command under, ACC Yusuf Aliu and the divisions under it have been put on their toes to curb series of crime emanating from some okada riders and to put a stop to miscreants attacking law-abiding bike riders.

Politics / Police Arrest INEC Officers Over Illegal PVC Registration Unit In Church Hall by OmoOgunOriginal(f): 1:18am On Jul 30, 2022
July 29, (THEWILL) – Police on Friday, arrested three staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for conspiring with a parish priest of St Brigigs Catholic Church, Ijeshatedo, Lagos, to create an illegal permanent voter cards registration unit in the church auditorium for members.

The INEC staff including Mrs Rita, Ikechukwu Izuchukwu and Miss Agbokhna Ebigun, were arrested following a complaint by the Chairman, Residents Association, Raji Azeem, to the police about ploys by the church to disenfranchise some members of the public.

According to Azeem, residents have waited to no avail at the INEC recognised registration centre only to discover that electoral officers have been camped at Catholic Church hall attending to members of the church.

He said, “The INEC registration officers, according to INEC provision should be stationed at 9A, Imam Thanni, but this was not to be. We have been here awaiting their arrival, but when we discovered that they were not forthcoming, we were worried.

“Only for us to discover that they have been camped at the St Brigigs Catholic Church auditorium on the influence of the parish priest registering only members of the church, while we were in the queue waiting. It was a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise us.

“The House 9A Imam Thanni registration centre has remained a constant polling unit since 1983. But the priest decided to play the religious cards by inducing the electoral officers to register only his church members.

“The church members have been around since 5 am, but we were unaware of their plan until we busted them in action and handed them over to the police at the Ijeshatedo police station. The arrested INEC officers have been crying and begging for their misdeeds.

“But they were granted bail by the IPO, Inspector Shola, so that they can continue with the registration. He instructed them to return after the exercise and that they should discontinue the exercise at the church hall and move to the venue approved by INEC.”

Another resident, Omolabake Ishola, said the news that political thugs invaded the venue of the registration exercise is false.
According to her, the media platforms are deliberately distorting the truth of the matter.

She said: “There were no thugs at the registering venue contrary to what is being reported by some media houses. The fact of the matter is that the INEC officers have been compromised and they decided to register only members of the Catholic Church, while other residents were left out.

“We have been around since 8 am only to discover that INEC officers are at the church hall registering church members. This isn’t fair enough. From what we heard, the Parishioner had announced that he had made arrangements for the electoral officers to come to the church hall to register all members. But we should ask ourselves, is there a registration centre at the church hall? We have to be truthful with ourselves.”

Spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the arrest, said they were found within the church premises registering members.

He said, “The INEC officials were assigned to Imam Thanni Street by House 9A for today’s exercise. They were, however, found within the church premises. Residents raised concerns and informed the police. The DPO, Ijeshatedo, swung into action and brought the INEC officials to the station.”

” He was arrested at the roadside. He told them he has a sick mother, a wife a child at home that he was taking care of, upon that, they still killed him .

“I was told that they shot him while he tried to escape when he saw that other people arrested have also escaped, that was how he was shot in the arm”

When asked of what she wanted , Olutayo’s mother pleaded with the government to prevail on the corps to release her son’s corpse and investigate the killing of her son .

She said ” Ever since the time we have been going to check on him, they never allowed us to see him until Saturday morning when we saw his death announcement on Facebook with a gun placed on his chest , claiming they found it on him. It is a lie.

“We urge the government to help ask the Amotekun to release to us his dead body . He is not a cultist. they did not inform us that he had been killed , it was on Facebook that we saw it.”

“We want government to find out what led to the killing of my son . Please help me , they want to cheat me . They want to use power to cheat me . They killed my son and seized his corpse.”

Politics / May Day: Ogun Workers Beg Abiodun To Pay ₦68 Billion Pension Gratuities by OmoOgunOriginal(f): 7:44am On May 02, 2022
The Trade Union Congress, Ogun State Chapter has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to pay the N68bn pension gratuities owned by the state government.

Comrade Akeem Lasisi made the appeal in an address to mark the 2022 Workers Day on Sunday in Abeokuta.

Pensioners had on Thursday converged on the Union’s Secretariat in Abeokuta to organize a one-day special prayer against unknown evil forces preventing the Governor from paying them their entitlements.

Some of the demands of the pensioners were an increase in the pensioners’ monthly take home; increase in the quarterly release of gratuity from N500m to N1bn; release of deducted contributory pensions to their respective pension fund administrators, as well as the constitution of the Pensions Committee which will administer the affairs of their union.

Lasisi while addressing workers in the state at the MKO Abiola Stadium urged the state Governor to increase the quarterly release of N500m.

“Do everything possible to increase the quarterly release of N500 million to clear the backlog of gratuities for the State Pensioners. If the past government had started the remission of N500million quarterly as being done by your government, the backlog might have been either completely offset or minimally reduced by now. So, we commend your government for being humane, but we seek an upward review of the amount so remitted quarterly.”

The TUC Chairman commended Governor Abiodun for infrastructural development and provision of public bus, describing the initiatives as worker-friendly.

“He has excelled where the provision of public infrastructures, vis-à-vis road construction, the recently launched pilot scheme of public rapid bus transportation system, and sundry worker-friendly initiatives, moves and policies are concerned.

“Yes, kudos must be given to the government for releasing the promotion letters for the 2018 and 2019 promotion exercise of all Ministries, Departments and Agencies against the old practice hereby some sectors, most especially the teaching sector would be considered last or not even considered at all in the scheme of things. This indicated you are conscious of the fact that promotion exercises are statutory rights of workers

“The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria wishes to appreciate His Excellency for the upward review of the budgetary allocation to car refurbishment and motorcycle loans for senior and junior civil servants from N100,000 to N200,000 and N40,000 to N80,000 respectively. This new piece of cheering news was transmitted to all concerned MDAs in a circular dated 22nd April, 2022. In spite of the downturn in the economy, our Governor has decided to be fair and just. We say a loud thank you sir.”

“Labour is not unaware that the global economy, and in particular that of Nigeria has suffered some blows since the COVID-19 pandemic broke and the associated recession all of which have affected funds available to governments. In fact, the state government is commended for keeping faith with the state workforce even in the face of the hard bitting economic recession by not downsizing nor embarking on salary cuts as done in other states as that would have thrown many breadwinners out of jobs, and their children thereby facing untold hardships.”

Politics / It Will Be Disservice To Nigerians If I Fail To Contest Presidency - Osinbajo by OmoOgunOriginal(f): 6:25am On Apr 26, 2022
The Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has declared it would be an injustice for Nigerians if he fail to contest the 2023 Presidential election in view of his vast experience in the last seven years in office.

Penpushing reports that, Osinbajo made this known on Monday during his visit the Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu in his office in Akure, the state capital, stressing that it is a special privilege to serve.

“I think It will be a betrayal to our country, to our nation, this is a nation that many people died for, people died for this country, if I, with all that has been given to me by the grace of God, retire quietly either to Lagos or Ikenne and go and be writing my memoirs.

“It will be a great injustice to our country, that is why I throw my hat in the ring and ensure I make the best case for the position of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Osinbajo said.

“It is such a special privilege to be called to serve, it is a very special privilege to serve either as exco, house of assembly, even as NWC member. I am sure that everybody knows that I have formally declared my intention to run as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’, he stated.

“I did so on Monday, April 11th, 2022 and I did so because, first of all there is nobody that can be anything God does not decide that he would be, only God can make a person president, vice president, governor, anything whatsoever’, Osinbajo added.

“So, I believe the hand of God must be on anything we are doing, but I declared my intention based on first, the fact that I have served, again by the sheer grace of God, I have served for seven years and some months’, he said.

“President Muhammadu Buhari, just out of his open-mindedness and his own generosity ensured that I was given very serious responsibilities as vice president and I also acted as president’, Osinbajo added.

” In those capacities, I got to know so many things that most people will never come across, even people in government will never come across and I gained a lot of experience on that account’, he said.

“Many times the President, when he was away, said pointedly to me that look, I don’t want to feter your discretion in any way, as acting president, you are president, just make sure you are fair and just, don’t refer anything to me, don’t ask me any questions, just do whatever you need to do’, Osinbajo stated.

Penpushing also reports that, the vice president commended President Muhammadu Buhari’s open-mindedness in delegating to him serious tasks that had aided his experience, noting that it was God that put people in power, emphasizing that it would be a betrayal of his country for him to retire with all his exposure in government.

Politics / Tinubu, Osinbajo Raise Alarm Over Plots By Alleged Propagandists by OmoOgunOriginal(f): 5:35am On Apr 21, 2022
The media offices of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Bola Tinubu issued separate statements, yesterday, warning the public to beware of plots by unscrupulous persons against their principals.

Osinbajo and Tinubu have both declared their intention to contest the presidency in next year’s general elections. The duo’s aspirations, however, have further stirred political waters, with some of their supporters hurling accusations and counteraccusations.

Titled, ‘Tinubu is the target of blasphemous campaign’, the aspirant’s media office said: “The orchestrated set-up of a poster campaign seeking to use a literary application of the Biblical story of Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus Christ to rope Asiwaju Tinubu into a storm of blasphemy is the most desperate antics of anti-Tinubu propagandists in recent times.”

It said: “Investigations have revealed that those who created the offensive poster were the same people who created the counter-campaign alleging blasphemy. Their design is used both to provoke anger against the person and aspiration of Asiwaju Tinubu.

“This campaign has failed. This is clearly irresponsible and insensitive political propaganda that seeks to exploit religious sentiments to manipulate public perception against Asiwaju Tinubu, who is ostensibly the most formidable presidential aspirant in this race.”

ON the other hand, the Osinbajo for President Media Council said it “uncovered yet another fraudulent plan to malign the reputation of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President of Nigeria and a presidential aspirant on the platform of the APC.

“The plot has been traced to a cell of smear campaigners, led by a U.S. based Nigerian, who was formerly a Students Union President at the University of Lagos. The same individual is currently a lecturer at the University of Ohio in the USA.

“The plan is to use fake audio of faceless individuals with fictitious names to cast the Vice President, who is a Christian, as a religious fanatic, who discriminated against the staff of other faith while he was Attorney General (AG) and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State during the tenure of former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

The statement continues: “In the fake video, a woman is seen crying and making frantic allegations that she was discriminated against by the then-Attorney General, because she was not allowed to wear the Muslim head cover for women, otherwise known as ‘hijab’, to work.

“As observed by someone who was in the same ministry at the time Osinbajo served as Attorney General, no such incident ever occurred and this is just a malicious and wicked attempt to sully the sterling qualities of Osinbajo because of his presidential aspirations.

“Indeed as Attorney General, Osinbajo’s Secretary, a Muslim, Alhaji Abdul Gafar Bakare, had testified before now that the then Lagos AG ‘did not only encourage me to further my education, even at my relatively old age, he personally sponsored my BSc Accounting Programme.’ He added that the Vice President also sponsored his foreign travel then.

“It would be recalled that a similar smear campaign was unleashed against President Muhammadu Buhari, especially during the 2014-15 presidential campaigns, when it was alleged that he was virulently anti-Christian. The attempt however met with failure.

“Even though a Christian pastor, Osinbajo has always demonstrated himself to be a tolerant Nigerian who believes in inter-faith harmony and freedom of worship, as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“During his career as a university teacher, he taught Muslims and Christians alike in a convivial atmosphere. He also had excellent working and private relationships with Muslim bosses over the decades, including Judge Bola Ajibola, former Governor Tinubu and President Muhammadu Buhari. Osinbajo remains a firm believer in Nigeria’s diversity and an ardent proponent of Nigerian unity.

“For these reasons, the media council feels the need to alert the general public to the odious campaign strategy of Osinbajo’s detractors and urge everyone to ignore same when released to the public.”

PRESSING its argument further, Tinubu’s media office said: “It is widely known that Asiwaju Tinubu is married to not just a Christian but an ordained pastor, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and has developed a very deep fraternal relationship with Christendom at all levels, a fact acknowledged by many bishops, pastors and parishioners over the years.

“A known Muslim, Asiwaju in words and actions has demonstrated religious tolerance and accommodation. He believes in the cardinal principle of the Nigerian Constitution that no one should suffer discrimination on the basis of creed or opinion.

“Besides, as a former governor of Lagos, a state that is a microcosm of Nigeria in terms of religious diversity, his matured management of religion as a way of life, ensured inter-religious harmony in Nigeria’s most industrialised state.

“It is, therefore, impudent to contemplate that a statesman of Asiwaju Tinubu’s standing will condone Biblical allusions that could denigrate his person or status.

These basic facts were ignored by those desperate to set Muslims against Christians through deliberate disinformation of the general public.

“While we shall continue to appeal to the Nigerian people to ignore such campaigns of calumny, we reiterate our commitment to prioritise our political communication on the exposition of the truth and dissemination of our point of view with decency and regard to the feelings of Nigerians.

“This is an irreducible minimum for us. We urge others to join us in this patriotic mission by shunning desperation and verbal violence in the campaign for the highest office in the land.”

Crime / Robbery Suspect Arrested While On His Way To An Operation In Ogun (photo) by OmoOgunOriginal(f): 5:28am On Apr 21, 2022
An armed robbery suspect, Waheed Ijiyemi, was on Tuesday, April 19th, arrested by men of Ogun state police command while on his way to carry out a robbery operation.

The suspect was arrested while the DPO Onipanu Division, CSP Bamidele Job, was on routine patrol with his men and sighted the suspect on an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle. Immediately the suspect sighted the policemen, he abandoned the motorcycle and took to his heels. He was hotly chased and arrested.

The small bag with him was searched and a cut to size locally made pistol with ten live cartridges was recovered therein.

Confirming his arrest, the spokesperson of the state police command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspect confessed to being an armed robber and that he was on his way to carry out an operation before he was apprehended.

Meanwhile, the state commissioner of police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.

The issue in South East is very simple, give them kanu

I believe Nigerians said this about the founding fathers of Boko Haram and how it was handled

Today the country would literally give anything to north to end agitation but it has gotten beyond that

Why don't the government do same for south east that still have a demand now?

You can release kanu and have him sign agreement with ICC etc that he can be apprehended wherever he is if he renegenes, from their the nation can start citing projects in south east and carrying them along at least to the extent that the other region enjoy

FG did that one time. What did he do?

He jumped bail and was incommunicado for months. Then his people spread all sort of lies that he was on a gunboat as a prisoner or was killed.

He came back and orchestrated the burning of Lagos which made Lagos declare curfew during End SARS (oh, you forgot that they burnt Ajeromi Ifelodun LGA on the morning of October 20, 2020? They started this in Lagos and South East cheered).

He called for the killing of Yorubas and even Igbos he named saboteurs.

So they should release him so he can continue organising his terrorists?

Let the Ukranian President just give them Donbass which is made up of ethnic Russians and end all of this.

He is also a war criminal.

Crimea opted to join their motherland in 2014 and the Ukrainians are still saying No. No to what exactly?

Besides I have seen videos of Ukranians brutally murdering Russians, or leaving them to die in the cold so they are equally (or more) wicked.
It dawns on me that some of Russia's murders during their retreat might be as a pain for all Ukranians did to them.

10,000 dead soldiers isn't 300 soldiers. undecided That's wicked for people that weren't targeting you (civilians).

This is pure bollocks. Wasn't the Donbass region forcefully Russianised by Katherine the Great who criminalised Ukrainian language, making Russia the only language by law and punishment, and Stalin who killed millions of ethnic Tartars? Read a history book or Google.

Russia took over a part of a country with guns and bombs and conducted a referendum with guns pointed at people and you think that is a free and fair referendum? Must be a joke.

Which part of Nigeria show we give Benin Republic or Cameroon if they ask for it with guns pointed at us? Your hometown?

Ukrainians killing Russians is kosher. Ukrainians didn't invade Russians to kill them in their homes.

Russia is behaving like killer herdsmen in Nigeria and you want them to be welcomed with smiles

As the world class Saint you are, your days are coming too. I was expecting to hear she stole or killed, or ran away with work or something. All I saw was a single story of someone bidding for work and with clearly no full receipts from his part because the reporter will always be right. Why not wait for her to come and drop hers too. If it is as bad as he says, you think the real backstabbers show themselves? A new number, email and WhatsApp can do it. She bidded for work with her chest atleast, she no hide under mask. All of you do it on Upwork. Offering free samples to white people. Lying about your locations, opening fake identity upwork accounts because you are Nigerians and they will want to have nothing to do with you. So get out. Your cognitive assonance is worth mentioning. Maybe you are a client with writers who has beefs against you. Pray your own turn don't come.

Olawale, please stop making a fool of yourself sir. I'm not a writer. I have never opened Upwork or any freelancing site in my life. I should get out? You should get yourself checked on why you are assuming things about strangers on Internet and using such to insult people

Politics / Court Jails Man For Breaking Into Abiodun’s Chief Of Staff’s Office by OmoOgunOriginal(f): 7:12am On Mar 05, 2022
An Ogun state magistrate court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta on Friday, sentenced one Oyedele Seunfunmi, a member of staff at the state governor office to four years and six months jail term for breaking into the office of the Chief of Staff, Shuaib Salisu.

PLATFORMTIMES gathered that the accused committed the offence on the 29th of October, 2021 when he was caught in a CCTV as he slipped into the office of the CoS to steal some A4 papers.

During the trial, PLATFORMTIMES learnt that the accused hid inside the toilet in the office to escape being caught at the time but failed.

PLATFORMTIMES further gathered that when on a search warrant, the Police visited the residence of the accused at Amalaso, Abeokuta, found some letterheaded papers of the former Ogun Chief of Staff in his possession.

After hours of hearing, the chief magistrate, I.O Abudu recalled that the accused, who said he was guilty of the charges against him, was not in a good health during the last trial as he stumbled during proceedings.

The chief magistrate also viewed the 6-minute footage as an evidence before passing her judgment.

Plead by the defence counsel before the magistrate to tamper justice with mercy prove abortive as the chief magistrate sentenced the man to four years and six months imprisonment.

Sports / Abandoned National Hero Maiyegun Finds Solace In Austrian Wife, Fumilayo by OmoOgunOriginal(f): 8:52am On Feb 23, 2022
Abandoned by his country, Nigeria’s first Olympics medalist, Maiyegun, who celebrates his 82nd birthday today (FEB 22) finds solace in Fumilayo (Ruldofine) who has been his rock of ages

Elsewhere pioneers and trailblazers are celebrated like Kings and Queens but in Nigeria, they are more often treated like poor distance cousins.

Nojeem Maiyegun, the first Nigerian to win an Olympics medal is one of the many trailblazers that Nigeria treats with contempt.

Maiyegun who won Nigeria’s first Olympic medal at Tokyo’64 games, over a decade after we joined the modern Olympics Family in Helsinki’52 Games, has been consigned into the dustbin of history by our rulers.

234sportsng.com Central Europe Special Correspondents Olubunmi Akande and Charles Ambrose met Maiyegun in Vienna, Austria January 4, 2022. As he marks his 82nd birthday today, we celebrate the living legend in our own little way, we hope our leaders will remember him and give him the deserved honour and recognition.

Introduction

When you are down and out, the only way out is God’s intervention and when God intervenes it translates into eternal joy and peace.

This is the Nojeem Maiyegun, the first Nigeria to win an Olympic medal. Divine intervention came the day he met Ruldofine an Austrian lady he later married.

When they met, many ladies would not consider Maiyegun a suitor, much less think of marrying.

Then, he was blind and doing menial jobs to eke out a living but even at his lowest level, Ruldofine not only fell in love with him but became his everything from the day they met.

Maiyegun speaks exclusively to 234sports correspondents in Vienna, Austria

Maiyegun changed her name to Funmilayo (Which literally means God gives me joy). How prophetic the name turned out to be because as he turned 82 years old today, life without Funmilayo would probably have been harsh.

Blind and suffering from dementia (a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental process caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes and impaired reasoning).

When we met Maiyegun at his government flat on a bitterly cold evening in January 2022, he was all smiles, his white teeth shining like crystal.

Dressed in Yoruba attire: ‘This your welcome smile is infectious sir” we said, “It’s more than a welcome smile my children. I have the ability to perceive young men when they are around me and I smile, their youthfulness, this makes me happy. You people, the younger ones, are the strength of the world, you are the future”

We recalled an encounter with him on the streets of Vienna about eight years ago. It was summer, he was wearing Yoruba Dashiki, when we greeted him ‘Eka san Baba’, and it was the same infectious smile accompanied with prayers.

Still agile, strong, looking fresh, neatly dressed and ever ready to talk but his challenges are his sight and memory but thank God for Funmilayo who is today Maiyegun’s sight and memory.

His memory fluctuates, for example when we asked about Muhammad Ali he quickly responded, “Yes, I know Mohammed Ali, he was great. “We have met in person and taken pictures together but we never fought each other in the ring.” But he has never heard of Anthony Joshua, the former world boxing champion.

When we asked him where he was born he could hardly remember but thank God for Funmilayo, Maiyegun’s walking encyclopedia, “He was born in Lagos but his parents hailed from Abeokuta”

Maiyegun could not also remember the name of his mother and his plan for his birthday. Again, it was Funmilayo to the rescue. She told us his mother’s name is Falilat and that his birthday today will be quiet.

Over the years, Maiyegun must have told Funmilayo the story of his life over and over again and being a lady with retentive memory she recalled all the details effortlessly.

Funmilayo knows all the streets in Lagos Island where Maiyegun used to play as a child and as an adult. She remembered events and dates without checking a diary.

In fact, calling her Maiyegun’s memory bank will not be inappropriate.

Longing not to be forgotten but long forgotten

For Funmilayo, the only thing that Maiyegun wants from Nigeria is not to be forgotten, that the country should but do something that will etch his name in stone in the hearts of the unborn generation.

But Nigeria has long forgotten him, in fact a director in the National Sports Commission (NSC) told a public gathering that he was dead.

At the Eko 2012 National Sports festival the director referred to him late Maiyegun while presenting the champions’ trophy to Team Delta, winners of the 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos , said the trophy was “named after late Nojim Maiyegun”, causing many to wonder when the boxing legend died.

In an earlier interview, Maiyegun responded swiftly, “I am not dead as some people think. I’m still living in Austria but as an old man, I take things easy. I cannot afford to travel regularly between Austria and Nigeria because of my age. Besides, I will need assistance in Nigeria because I’m blind. I’ll need a trustworthy person to accompany me all the time. It will be like starting from scratch if I return home, but I really want to come back. I hope the government can be of help in this regard,”

Early childhood and foray into boxing

Maiyegun, according to Funmilayo, was born in the Bamgbose area of Lagos Island. He started boxing at 16. He had gone to fetch water at a public tap in Bamgbose.

There was a boy who bullied other kids whenever he got to the public tap; the boy beat him thoroughly that was why he started learning boxing at Bonny Ade Boxing Gym for six months until he was able to fight the boy.

His parents were against his foray into boxing while his Uncle named Suarju wanted to learn carpentry because according to him boxing and crime go hand in hand and most boxers are jagunda.

But the moment he started winning amateur fights, his parents backed down and started supporting him.

With his parents backing, the sky became the limit for Maiyegun. His first international fight was against Ghana’s Joe Blackey in Accra in 1960, which he won. He then made the Nigeria team to the Tokyo ’64 Olympic Games where he won Nigeria’s first medal in the Olympics, a bronze medal, in boxing.

At the 1966 Commonwealth Games in Jamaica, he won another bronze medal also in boxing.

Maiyegun, nicknamed Omo Oloja by boxing buffs moved to Austria after turning pro but his dream of winning a world title was cut short by blindness.

He had to struggle to eke out a living after losing his sight. In an earlier interview, Maiyegun said, “I’m not sure what could have caused the blindness but doctors thought it could have been from punches on the head. It started partially, and at one point, I had to fight a world championship title bout with the sight problem. I lost the fight on the decision but it is on record that I am the first blind boxer to fight for a title. I could see with one eye then.”

Maiyegun also loves climbing mountains. He is the first completely blind man in Austria to climb a mountain 1,7meters high and jump with a parachute.

Awards and recognition.

Apart from the award from Pastor Chris Okotie, Household of God Church at the annual Karis Awards Ceremony, Maiyegun has not got the deserved awards for winning the nation’s first Olympic Games medal and a bronze medal two years later at the Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica.

Said Maiyegun in an earlier interview “I don’t recall getting anything special as a reward when I won the medal at the Olympics but former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida gave me an award in 1989. The award was eventually retrieved by the Sports Ministry the following year for no reason at all. I was thinking the award would belong to me forever but they took it back.”

After spending quality time with the couple we decided to leave but the words of Funmilayo kept resonating in our minds. What will cost Nigeria to give Maiyegun a national honour and name an edifice after him? Which sane society will dump a trailblazer in another part of the world forget when he should be celebrated daily and his story used to inspire the youth.

We always chorus that the labour of our heroes will not be in vain, why don’t we put it into practice? Will Nigeria wait for Maiyegun to die before we start sending a government delegation to his family and give him a ‘befitting burial’. Why not give him a ‘befitting living instead of befitting burial’. So many questions are beyond us. We only hope and pray that the power that be will read this and act on it.

What you lack is discipline.

That's the baseline issue for all these things you've written.

What do you need to be more disciplined, to right all these wrongs, amend your mistakes and leave a better life going forward?

Determination.

That's all.

If you decide and determine that you will become more disciplined or die trying, your problems will be solved

it works only on Monday, they will drop at Lagos, then take a bus to Ogun!

It actually gets to Ogun State before Lagos. So they should drop at Lafenwa, Abeokuta and just ask for where they will board a bus to Sagamu where the camp is located.

If they had taken vehicle, they will get to Sagamu before Lagos so they can enter Lagos bus
