I would have preferred that fiery house of rep guy as AG, what's that his name again? The one that the liberals basically shut up with some "sins".

Pam tried. It's a complex world in there. She's too clean and "gentle" for the Federal Government environment. That place is full of sharks - within and without. Good luck to her in all her future endeavor.

Ben, Raum and Bas, I listened to Trump’s Iran war update this morning on Fox, the recorded one. I know he likes to “be himself” and go through some written scripts with little attention, but last address to the nation was not, using his own words, “not very nice”.

Whoever his handlers/advisers are, they need to work on him to make speeches to the nation better than last night’s delivery, especially on sensitive matters. This is not the press. He’s addressing the people on issues that matters most to them.

The comments from Fox watchers wasn’t good either. People were somewhat disappointed with the delivery of that speech. The administration can do better.

My two cents.

It is true for low grade positions. You can not be drilling oil in my community and fill all posts with outsiders. We community insiders will resent not reaping from our land and blow up your oil company. And that's why you do what is right and allocate some jobs to my community.

You wouldn't however just drag an unqualified person from my community and give them a job in your oil company that they are not qualified for. Smart you would go as far as India to hire technicians who know how to do what you want done if you can't find competent people in my community or in the entire Nigeria, and you'd sadly hire my community people to clean toilets and fill my ïgnorantly proposed DEI quota.

You are not stupǐd enough, I hope, to hire an unqualified DEI person from my community as a technician in your oil company in my community. And I'd like to hope you'd not think I am stupǐd enough to insist you employ an unqualified person from my community for a job they are not qualified for. If we are both that stupǐd, we shouldn't be surprised your oil company makes no money and eventually goes bankrupt. And when that happens, you definitely wouldn't be hiring unqualified or qualified DEIs from my community nor qualified people from anywhere.

And that's precisely why smart intelligent community leader me will insist you DEI by investing in the schools in my community so that people in my community can qualify to go for further education that I will insist you give scholarships for so that you can hire them as technicians after they have qualified. And smart you will agree because you see advantage (my people not blowing up your oil company for instance) in investing in my community. You'd be able to advertise your product as socially responsibly sourced if you do. And my community people will not blow up your oil company because that would be like stupidly blowing up the food on our own community dinning table. Smart me will join smart you to dissuade those whom such stupǐd thoughts cross their mind.

Now, this is the sort of post that seun's spam likes to bot, so I can only hope you get to see and read it.
The way you answer some questions, I just wonder. Have you worked in an oil company to be writing with this level of “authority” ?

Adams, I just asked after you in the other politics thread. So, this is where you are ? What are you doing supporting the Ayatoilets? What da hell. You're too smart for this type of stuff.

Did you see what happened in the last election in Nigeria?
Ask people how difficult it was to get voter cards. I read stories and heard tales of people of certain tribes having very difficult times getting voter ids.
You have first hand experience with it and still act like you don't.

Voting in the US is done at a precinct level by people who live in that precinct. So, when I walk in I meet someone who I see when I go running, who asks my address and then checks me in. In that voting place, there is an armed local cop outside and a couple armed local cops inside.
The organization it would take for someone to vote multiple times is unrealistic. And you would be insane to risk voting illegal if you aren't a legal citizen yet.

Now, I am for security so I have no issue with voter id, in fact would prefer it. The problem is, can it be done in a manner that doesn't disenfranchise people.
The Dems had a voting rights bill that allowed for voter ID. But they also had protections in place so people could get those IDs easily and at no cost. A cost to vote is a poll tax which is illegal in the US because of its racist history or being used to disenfranchise black voters.
Voting is a right guaranteed by the constitution and should be treated as such.

Also, strangely enough this new Republican bill would disenfranchise Republican voters more than Democratic voters. Democrats are more likely to have a Passport(travel) and be able to get to a location to get an ID. So Dems are actually fighting for Republican voters here as usual but being criticized by the same people they are fighting for.

And lastly, the difference between DeepSight and you is that he speaks in a probing way. It sounds like he studies what he is talking about, has info to back it up and still stays in his lane on matters he may not have enough experience in. His goal seems to lean and grow his knowledge base. You talk like your word is the end all and be all of a topic especially when it's clear you really don't have facts to back it up or a firm understanding of that topic. It's the same thing Basilico and Bemeruca do in this thread.
Like this post.
You are arguing about how voter id worked in Nigeria without talking about one of the biggest issues, how big of a mess and how hard it was to get the voter card. And what seems like a deliberate, purposeful strategy to prevent some people from voting to game the election.
...read through all you wrote. Balanced views, learnt some new stuff. You keep at it like this, perhaps, we can be friends, so long as you're not gay. grin grin

Also, what if Trump's plan also include making sure that all eligible voters have this ID? What if he's got a good plan to start this. We are in the jet age for Christ's sake. Let them just take that first step. You all sound like "it can't be done" and it's got to be perfect the first time. I don't think this is what's on Trump's mind. He just wants some order around how things are done. Your hatred of and for him is blinding you all from seeing what's good coming out of this.

Personally I dont really have a problem with insisting on IDs to vote to be honest. But the truth is just that the way America is configured, they know already that the minorities are far less likely to have IDs owing to the fact that a higher percentage of them live somewhat economically shambolic and "scattered" lives. So its a thing they understand well. And they are doing it to diminish the minority vote, nothing more.

Mind you, I still say there is nothing wrong with asking for IDs.

America is weird in many things, there are only a couple of countries in the world where a felon can contest elections.
Bro, C'mon! If Nigeria - ranked as the poorest country on Earth right now, having fallen to that decrepit spot by displacing the former numero uno - India, still require IDs to vote in our elections, how is it that the "poor" in the US cannot get IDs, wherever they might be, to go to vote?

Perhaps, Ijebos will have something to write about now. He will say I am not living in the US, how will I know?

I am trying my best to remain clear and consistent with you, but it appears you need me to kowtow to your reading of things before you can proceed. Note that I am not a Christian, and as such it really is not my business what a Christian wants to abide by or not. What is clear to me is that -

1. The same God Christians worship made barbaric commandments in the Old Testament (including orders for genocide)

2. The same Jesus worshipped by Christians repeatedly quoted the Old Testament in many things. He would ask, what does the law of Moses tell you, for example, and when asked what it takes to enter the Kingdom of heaven he summarized the law as being loving God and loving your neighbor (and this is a summary of the ten commandments - the first four dealing with God and the last six dealing with your neighbor)

In light of the foregoing, tell me, is it not reasonable to say that it is questionable to languidly and carelessly wave away the Old Testament and its laws? Is it your position that the Old Testament has been abolished? Has it been "cancelled" the way Muslims say that newer scripture cancels older scripture? You tell me, if that is what you think.

Tell me specifically, have the ten commandments been abolished?

Have all the commandments towards love, fairness, justice, honesty and humility in the Old Testament been abolished?

Are Christians not still bound by them?

Or is it only when a Christian sees a command that he does not like that he remebers that Alhaji Jesus has changed things?

Go ahead and tell me.

You are the one trying to hold me to a thing I never said. I never said "Christians are bound by the law" for example. That is your inference. I can understand why you leap to that inference but it misses my position. I dont think Christians are bound by all of the law (I gave you the example of the edict against shaving facial hair to show you that there are many petty and absurd rules therein - the books of Deuteronomy and Leviticus are a sad read full of nonsensical and petty injunctions) - BUT - no one can argue that the God that Christians worship (someone who is said to be the same yesterday, today and forever) once made such injunctions and prescriptions and no one can deny that it is worrisome that he would.

+
We fulfill promises, laws are not "fulfilled" - no one makes such a usage of language either in law or everyday life. Laws are either obeyed, disobeyed or enforced. So quit the petty attempt at the professional ad hominem.

Speaking theologically however, I would say that Christ meant that the entire thrust of the events of the Old Testament found fulfillment in his coming. Certainly not that the laws and rules therein were fulfilled by him. If anything he dismissed quite a few of the said laws and rules (On Divorce/ On Revenge/ On the Sabbath, to mention a few). Thus you are the one being absurd and failing to use or understand language properly if you speak about law being fulfilled.

The facts remain -

1. Both OT and NT endorsed slavery
2. Christians and the Church justified slavery (and the murder of alleged witches) with bible verses.

Defend that.
Just to chip in that the Church approach issues differently now - standards haven't changed though. I used the word "differently" so TV01 will not be pissed with the word "evolve". I hope I am safe to do this, TV01?

Yes and many non Nigerians have those IDs.

No, I live in Lagos. Always have, from birth and likely always will, despite the temptations to move.

As crazy as Lasgidi is, I have a true love for it.
So, then, if the leader of the free world (US) request that voters should have an ID to vote, is this out of place? Is there really something sinister that can be tied to this as many democrats are saying about this? Isn't it even a strange thing that such is happening in a country like the US in this day and age?

Even the non-Nigerians among us present an ID to vote!

We do use IDs to vote in Nigeria, don't we - never mind that the Northerners even allow their herd of cattle to vote, from what I gather (however true that may be)?

You sound (write) like a lawyer I know in Port Harcourt. Is that where you live?
