Politics / Lawyer, Journalists Condemn Efcc's Actions Against Bello, Urge Adherence To Rule by onojaintegrity: 10:35am On Apr 20
By Onoja Integrity

In a heated discussion on the program "Journalists Hangout" on TVC on Friday, concerns were raised over the recent actions of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding the case involving former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello. The lead discussant, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju began by emphasizing that before taking any action, the EFCC must first address the court order restraining them from arresting, prosecuting, or detaining Bello.

The veteran journalists unanimously condemned the EFCC's actions, insisting that court orders must be obeyed. They cited similar cases involving other politicians who have enjoyed court orders restraining the EFCC from taking action against them, including Bello Matawalle, Peter Odili, and Abdul'aziz Abubakar Yari.

Addressing the situation, legal expert Liborous Oshoma criticized the EFCC's approach, describing it as melodramatic. He highlighted a lawsuit filed by Bello against the EFCC at the Kogi High Court, which resulted in the restraining order. Oshoma condemned the EFCC for not taking Bello's statement before attempting to arrest or charge him.

Oshoma, expressing his legal perspective, emphasized the unusual nature of the case, where charges are being pressed without a statement being taken. He criticized the EFCC's haste and urged Bello to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion.

Regarding the restraining order and Bello's refusal to surrender to the EFCC, Oshoma argued that the EFCC should appeal the order and obtain Bello's statement before proceeding with charges. He asserted that Bello's reliance on the court order was legally justified, as the EFCC lacks the authority to arrest him without vacating the restraining order.

In essence, the discussion highlighted the need for the EFCC to adhere to legal procedures and obtain necessary statements before pursuing charges against Bello, respecting the rule of law and due process.

Politics / Re: Judiciary: Democracy At Cross Road, Says Cso by onojaintegrity: 10:07pm On Mar 05
In a staunch defense against what he calls "frivolous allegations" by the Center for Public Orientation and Good Governance, Human Rights Lawyer Chief Paulson Oke asserts that the pseudo group poses a serious threat to democracy. He emphasizes that their lack of authority to form opinions on a matter before a competent court could sway public opinion and have dire consequences if not addressed promptly.

Chief Oke criticizes the faceless group's apparent ignorance of legal procedures, stating that their questioning of court decisions unrelated to the November 11th election in Kogi State undermines democracy and the rule of law. He calls on the public to ignore misleading statements from such groups and urges faith in the judiciary to uphold justice.

Praising the Nigerian Judiciary for its commitment to truth, Chief Oke emphasizes the importance of judges remaining firm, unbiased, and resolute in their duties despite attempts at intimidation by what he labels as "democratic saboteurs." He dismisses the Center for Public Orientation and Good Governance as a "fraud" and advises the public to avoid it like a plague, affirming the judiciary's role as the hope of the common man in Nigeria's nascent democracy.

He said, "While we call on the public to ignore any false and misleading statements from groups and persons such as these with questionable motives, we must remain resolute in keeping faith with our judiciary to do the right thing. The judges must remain firm, unbiased and resolute in the discharged of their sworn duties and not be intimidated by democratic saboteurs.

"Our nascent democracy can not be undermined by disgruntled paid elements crying wolf where there is non. Their verbiage should be ignored or at best relegated to a position of ignominy.

"The beer parlor congress known as the Center for Public Orientation and Good Governance, is a fraud and should be avoided like a plague."

Politics / Prof. Mainasara's Series Illuminates Bello's Reign In Kogi by onojaintegrity: 7:39am On Mar 04
The legacy of Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello's governance in Kogi State, spanning from January 27, 2016, to January 27, 2024, has undergone meticulous scrutiny in a comprehensive review by the National Coordinator of Democratic Values and Good Governance Advocacy Forum, Prof. Mainasara Isah Katagum. In his extensive examination, he disclosed that the "review aimed to illuminate the accomplishments and nuances of Bello's tenure through a clinical comparative analysis, deploying a pair review mechanism to advance democratic values."

The academic don who mailed the piece to the media on Sunday, said that Kogi, nestled in North Central Nigeria and established on August 27, 1991, alongside other states, witnessed the divine orchestration of Bello's emergence as its governor, adding Bello acknowledging the bestowed responsibility, "he embraced the daunting task, emerging as the youngest governor in the country at that time. His leadership characteristically addressed substantial challenges faced by the state, including security issues, an inflated civil service, and economic strains heightened by the global recession."

The text of the review he tagged series 1 reads, "between 2015 and 2022, Kogi State encountered diverse challenges, which Bello viewed as opportunities to showcase his competence, capacity, and exceptional leadership acumen. This series marks the commencement of a comparative analysis, focusing initially on Lokoja, the state's capital, and subsequently shifting its spotlight to Kogi East, Kogi, Central, and Kogi West.

"The rejuvenation of Lokoja began with the construction of the Ganaja Junction flyover/interchange, alleviating persistent gridlock in the state capital. This vital project, connecting the Northern and Southern parts of Nigeria, contributed significantly to smoother traffic flow, even during festive periods.

"Other noteworthy achievements in Lokoja encompassed the complete reconstruction and modernization of the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, the rehabilitation of main and link roads within the Lokoja Township, the enhancement of the River Niger embankment, and the construction of an ultra-modern Revenue House—the first of its kind in North Central Nigeria. The Greater Lokoja Water Board also underwent an upgrade, securing improved water provision for the city.

"Education received a boost through the establishment of the GYB Model Science Secondary School in Adankolo, Lokoja, equipped with modern facilities rivaling tertiary institutions. The remodeling of roundabouts, the complete reconstruction of Lugard House (Government House), and the total overhaul of the Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja further reflected Bello's commitment to creating a conducive environment for working efficiency and educational excellence.

"Agricultural empowerment took center stage with the purchase and distribution of mechanized agricultural equipment, fortifying Kogi State's position as the nation's food basket. Bello's financial acumen is evident in the state's commendable domestic debt profile, maintaining one of the lowest figures in Nigeria.

"In the face of challenges plaguing other states, Kogi stood firm against unscrupulous elements and criminals under Bello's leadership. Security became a top priority, with the former governor leading from the front to curb crimes and criminality in the state.

"Recognized for his transparent and accountable governance, Alhaji Yahaya Bello earned several awards in the realms of security, good governance, and financial transparency. Kogi State, under his leadership, showcased its financial records online, fostering public accessibility and scrutiny through the Kogi State Verifiable portal.

"Noteworthy achievements also extended to the city, with the establishment of the Muhammadu Buhari Civic Center, road construction initiatives, provisions of farming tools, and the construction of the GYB Model Science Secondary School. The complete reconstruction of Lugard House further underscored the transformative impact on the state's seat of power.

"As Series II of the Comparative Analysis approaches, the focus will shift to Kogi East, promising further insights into the multifaceted impact of Bello's governance on the diverse regions of Kogi State."

Politics / Physical Diability Should Not Be Seen As The End Of Life – Barr Uju by onojaintegrity: 10:03am On Feb 21
The Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye has reminded Nigerians of the need to strive to overcome any form of physical disabilities in the quest to achieve their full potentials.

The Minister made this statement while presenting financial support to two physically challenged young men who came into the Ministry’s premises with Crutches. The Minister was driving into the premises when she noticed the young men, Musa Abdullahi and Murtala Mohammed and stepped down to engage them before entering her office.

According to her, “during the conversation, they told me that they were physically challenged but businessmen, selling beverages and other daily needs at the Federal Secretariat but need financial support to sustain their business. I was touched but personally impressed by their relentless spirit because they belong to the class of Nigerians who believe that there's still ability in disability. There is no limit towards achieving our dreams in life”

The Minister subsequently directed for the relevant Department to process and present a financial support of N100,000.00 each to the young men to re-stock their wares.

Responding on behalf of his friend, Musa Abdullahi expressed their delight at the kind gesture but added that he was surprised that the Ministry gave them a life line even when its primary mandate is to cater for the welfare and wellbeing of women and promised that the money will be put into judicious use.

Speaking further, Barr Uju stated that though the Ministry oversees the welfare and promotes the interest of women and the girl child, special cases involving the male gender are not overlooked because the welfare of all Nigerians should be paramount at all times.

Politics / Fg Unveils Portal For Women Empowerment As Pathway To End Child Marriage by onojaintegrity: 9:46pm On Feb 20
The Federal Government has unveiled an E-commerce portal which will serve as veritable platform of convergence for buyers, sellers, NGOs, farmers, entrepreneurs, manufacturers and people in other forms of business ventures that will ensure economic emancipation and sustainable empowerment of women as pathway towards ending child marriage in Nigeria.

Prior to the formal unveil of the portal by the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye during a national dialogue on ending of child marriage in Nigeria, the Minister observed that the portal which is tagged “PBAT Cares 4 Women E-Market” will provide a new lease of life for women especially those in the rural areas to properly harness their potentials and skills, have reliable means of earning a living and save money through seamless banking process.
According to her, by keying into the portal, women in registered Cooperative groups will enjoy limitless opportunities that will scale up their socio-economic status “ and also give mothers the voice to say no to early child marriage which has not only demeaned the dignity of our women and the girl child but also erodes the potentials of the female gender”

“As build up towards realizing set goals, the Women Affairs Ministry has started distributing industrial machines and farming equipment among states such as Kebbi, Oyo, Anambra, Jigawa, Kano, Imo, Ekiti and Benue for the first phase of distributions. Other states will be integrated into subsequent plans”
Speaking on behalf of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Emir of Zamfara, Alh. Attahiru Ahmad commended the organizers of the national discourse which according to him, “ will rejig our minds on the socio-cultural and economic consequences of child marriage and work out modalities towards eradication of child marriage in our country” He added that “ the Sultan has championed the same matter over the years and for us, the push to end child marriage in Nigeria cannot be negotiated”. He however, urged the Ministry of Women Affairs, UNICEF and other partners to take the advocacy across the 6 geo-political zones of the country to have the desired impact.
In the words of the Methodist Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Dr. Michael Akinwale who represented the Christian Association of Nigeria, “child marriage is big disservice to the nation’s economic growth and our socio-cultural advancement as a nation because our girls are forcefully married out at unacceptable and unrealistic ages with attendant negative effects to some homes and the larger society”. He therefore urged the organizers to work towards implementation of outcomes from the national discourse.
In the same vein, the Country Representative of UNICEF, Ms. Christian Munduate lauded the Ministry of Women Affairs for coming up with “ this landmark initiative which will redefine the socio-cultural landscape of Nigeria. Child marriage poses a significant obstacle to the holistic development of the adolescent girls, adversely impacting their education, health and socio-economic status”
She also added that “in a recent study by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the UNICEF (Economic Burden of Child Marriage in Nigeria), the total cost of failing to end child marriage is $10 billion per year and that ending child marriage could boost the GDP of Nigeria by 2.4%”. She urged the Federal and State governments to prioritize investments on health and education to address the obvious consequences of the harmful practice of child marriage in Nigeria.
Aside from goodwill messages from various stakeholders, the event featured panelists with submissions hovering on the urgent need for improved government involvement with strong legal frameworks and collective actions to end child marriage in Nigeria.
Other traditional rulers present at the event include the Emirs of Kaura Namoda in Zamfara state, Lere in Kaduna State, Agaie and Kagara in Niger States, Spouses of Governors, Ministers, UNFPA and other stakeholders.

Politics / Women Affairs Minister Places 2 Million Naira Bounty On Anambra Lawyer by onojaintegrity: 7:11am On Feb 13
The Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye has placed a reward of N2 million for any member of the public with information concerning the where about of an Onitsha-based Lawyer, Mrs Adachukwu Okafor who was alleged to have inflicted bodily harm on a minor (girl), Happiness Nwafor a child live-in maid by designing her legs and body with hot iron and a kitchen knife.

Addressing the media today, the Minister expressed her concern over the health status of the 10 years old girl who is presently undergoing medical treatment in a hospital at Awka, Anambra State, attacked recently by her guardian living at the GRA in Onitsha.
The visibly infuriated Minister described the lady’s actions as unacceptable and unpardonable acts of "child abuse, infliction of grievous bodily harm and inhuman treatment" and reiterated the resolve of Ministry of Women Affairs under her watch to fight against all forms of abuse against the vulnerable children in the society. She also added that the lady who is presently at large after committing the heinous act, has boasted that nothing will happen since she is a Lawyer and urged members of the public with any vital information about the lady to provide such with a reward of N2 million naira.

Barr Uju added that the Ministry is presently on a review and regulation of the procedure for taking in house maids in Nigeria especially in view of Section 28, 1 (d) of the Child Rights Act which prohibits the employment of a child under 18 years old as a domestic help outside his/her own home or family environment. “The Ministry will engage the Federal Ministry of Justice on this matter to ensure that we protect vulnerable children from this manner of avoidable inhuman treatment”
“We have been investigating the matter through the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and since the suspect is claiming to be above the law, we will equally forward a formal report to the President, Nigerian Bar Association to also look into this barbaric act, investigate and take appropriate action against their member. Mr. President does not wish for any Nigerian to suffer unnecessarily and we will drive this matter to a logical conclusion”

Meanwhile, the Minister also announced that the Ministry will provide some succor for the parents of the victim to earn a living that will change their economic status and discourage them from giving out any of their children as house helps.
According to media reports, little Miss Happiness was attacked by her guardian who used the hot-iron she was using to iron her children's school uniform to stamp her face. When she jumped up crying for pains, the woman on sensing that her neighbours may be hearing her loud cry, tied her two hands up, pushed her into the toilet and locked her there.
With her repeated cries there in the toilet, her guardian came the second time to use the same hot iron and a kitchen knife in designing her legs and body. Speaking further, the little girl also stated that she was kept there for two days without any food or water. It was on the third day that her guardian on seeing her weak and dying, opened the door and bundled her into her car back and took her to her Aunt's place, at Nkpor, the little girl narrated.

The mother of the badly battered girl, allegedly with hot iron on parts of her body, said she gave the girl to her sister’s daughter, who is the Lawyer, to live with, lamenting that she had made a wrong decision.

Crime / Public Affairs Analyst Condemns EFCC Over Charges On Yahaya Bello by onojaintegrity: 11:27am On Feb 10
The legal imbroglio between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has stirred considerable controversy and debate across the nation. Prof Dahiru Sule, a respected Public Affairs Analyst renowned for his expertise in financial matters, has offered a detailed critique of the charges leveled against Bello. Through an exhaustive analysis, Prof Sule delves into the intricacies of the case, scrutinizing the EFCC's allegations and highlighting the administration's steadfast commitment to financial transparency and accountability.

In recent weeks, the Nigerian public has been captivated by the unfolding legal saga involving Yahaya Bello, the erstwhile Governor of Kogi State, and the EFCC. Against this backdrop, Prof Dahiru Sule has emerged as a prominent voice, providing valuable insights and expert commentary on the matter. With his extensive background in forensic accounting and public affairs analysis, Prof Sule offers a nuanced perspective that sheds light on the complexities of the case.

During a televised program in Abuja, Prof Sule embarked on a meticulous examination of the charges brought against Yahaya Bello by the EFCC. Armed with his keen analytical acumen, he scrutinized the allegations with a discerning eye, uncovering numerous discrepancies and inconsistencies. From factual inaccuracies in the timeline to dubious financial figures, Prof Sule dismantled the EFCC's case piece by piece, exposing the frailty of its foundation.

A central theme in Prof Sule's analysis is the remarkable depth of financial expertise within Yahaya Bello's administration. Notably, both the governor himself and several key members of his government boasted impressive credentials as chartered accountants of international repute. This cadre of financial professionals instilled a culture of rigorous oversight and prudent fiscal management, setting the stage for Kogi State's reputation as a bastion of transparency and accountability.

Of particular concern to Prof Sule were the glaring discrepancies in the timeline presented in the EFCC's charges. He underscored the factual impossibility of Yahaya Bello conspiring to commit financial malfeasance in September 2015, a time when he had yet to assume office as Governor of Kogi State. Moreover, Prof Sule dismantled the legal fallacies inherent in the EFCC's case, highlighting the absence of substantive evidence and the failure to adhere to due process.

Throughout Yahaya Bello's tenure as governor, Kogi State emerged as a shining example of fiscal accountability and transparency. Prof Sule lauded the government's unwavering commitment to openness and integrity in financial management, citing a litany of awards and accolades bestowed upon the state in recognition of its exemplary performance. From fiscal transparency surveys to awards from prestigious institutions like the World Bank, Kogi State stood as a beacon of good governance under Bello's leadership.

Sule, also in his Analysis went ahead to directed Nigerians to Visit the Kogi State Government website to see clearly how the Government annually published their financials as well as the state Budget performance reports, he further made particular References to the 2015 budget Income and Expenditures of kogi State as claimed by EFCC, though Bello was not Governor at that time, the 80 Billion he wss accused of Stealing is well above the total income of Kogi State as at 2015, Incase the EFCC meant 2016 the Total income and Expenditures was also not up to the 80Billion accusations by the Commission. Prof Dahiru made public a hard copy of the 2015 and 2016 Financial summary
(See attached) for further clarifications.

He advised the Commission to always do their due diligence before going Public to avoid any further National embarrassment.

He charged the Public to always make verifications and educate themselves with basic facts and figures to avoid being misled. He advised other State Governors to always emulate YAHAYA BELLO by hiring Professional Accountants in management of the state finances. He also admonished Governors to publish their State financials on Websites and other public Platforms for public scrutiny, assessment and evaluation as demonstrated by Kogi State Government.

Politics / Csos Demand Efcc's Apology For False Allegations Against Bello by onojaintegrity: 5:36pm On Feb 07
Civil society organizations have united in condemnation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over what they term as outrageous and baseless allegations leveled against former Kogi State Governor, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello.

The uproar follows EFCC's accusation of Governor Bello for allegedly diverting 80 billion Naira while in office in September 2015, a time when Alhaji Yahaya Bello had not yet assumed the governorship. Alhaji Bello was officially sworn in as Governor of Kogi State on January 27, 2016. This discrepancy in dates has raised concerns about the credibility and motives behind the EFCC's actions.

In a press conference held in Abuja, Social Crusader Bar. Taofiq Shegun Bamisile, along with a coalition of 15 other civil society organizations, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene and restore the integrity of the EFCC. They urged the President to suspend the EFCC Boss and institute sanctions against the commission for what they perceive as a politically motivated attack on Governor Bello.

Mr. Raymond Osakwe, Director-General of the Crusade for Complete Corruption Eradication in Nigeria (CCFCE), a renowned civil society organization dedicated to fighting corruption, also condemned the EFCC's actions. He expressed disappointment at the EFCC's partisan approach and described the accusations against Governor Bello as baseless and politically motivated. Osakwe emphasized that Nigerians have lost confidence in the EFCC due to its recent actions and called for the withdrawal of charges against Governor Bello, along with a formal apology from the commission.

The collective outcry from civil society organizations underscores the need for accountability and fairness in the fight against corruption. It sends a clear message to the EFCC and government authorities that the public demands transparency and adherence to due process in all investigations and legal proceedings.

Politics / Female Genital Mutilation: It Is A Global Responsibility – Barr Uju by onojaintegrity: 5:14pm On Feb 06
The Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye has described the fight to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as a collective responsibility of the entire global community to stamp out all forms of harmful practices against the girl child.
Speaking on this year’s edition of the international day of zero tolerance for female genital mutilation with the theme: “Her Voice, Her Future: Investing in Survivor-led Movements”, the Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s strong intent to eradicate this age-long practice which according her “demeans the dignity and potentials of our women and girls”
“On this International day of Zero Tolerance for female genital mutilation, Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate and acknowledge the courage of survivors of FGM who are fighting back and demanding change by calling for an to female genital mutilation through survivor-led movements. This global push is very pertinent as it spurs girls and women to take action and control of their bodies and futures, claiming what are rightfully theirs”.
She added that the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs’ mandate is to continue to support the empowerment of women and girls and their protection from harmful practices such as female genital mutilation which not only has devastating consequences on their physical and mental health but an economic impact as well.
It will be recalled that the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, observed annually on 6th of February, provides an opportunity for all stakeholders involved in ending FGM to evaluate achievements, galvanize support and further advocate for abandonment of the harmful practice against the girl child. FGM in Nigeria is mostly carried out on girls between the ages of 0 and 15 years (91 percent before age 1), showing that girls under the age of 1 year are at the greatest risk of cutting.
Nigeria has the third highest burden of Female Genital Mutilation globally and accounts for 10% of the 200 million women and girls’ survivors of FGM globally, estimated at 19.9 million (UNICEF, 2013; UNFPA 2018). Despite critical progress being made in eliminating FGM and a significant decrease in national prevalence of the practice, among women and girls aged 15-49 year, due to population growth, impact of COVID- 19 and climate change, UNICEF latest estimates show that global progress to eliminate FGM would need to be 28 times faster than the current pace to reach the target.

Politics / Debunking Publication Alleging Women Affairs Minister Organized Lavish Birthday by onojaintegrity: 7:00pm On Feb 03
The attention of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs has been drawn to a publication by the Osun Defender with the caption; “Admist Economic Hardship, Minister Organizes Lavish Birthday For Husband”, published on Thursday,1st February, 2024 on its online page as authored by one Hafsoh Isiaq.

Much as it is not our intention to use this platform to join issues with the author, one does not need to dig deep to notice that the publication was a deliberate deviation from the usual rigor and incisiveness associated with true and objective journalism. Having gone through the content of the publication, the need to clarify the disinformation and misleading allegation against the person of the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs as portrayed by the author, has become most pertinent.

The publication is grossly marred with falsehood as some indices point to the fact that the author was either misled by his source (s) who is out to malign the personality of the Honorable Minister or did not carry out due diligence before going to press. It is even most worrisome to note the obvious shift by the management of Osun Defender from its philosophy which is anchored on integrity and journalistic balance which is the hallmark of true and fair journalism.

It is common knowledge that modern day information technology provides wider latitude for most documents to be forged, make alterations, clone signatures and other manipulations which cannot be visible to the human eye.

Without dwelling much on the attached letter of invite purportedly linked to the Honorable Minister, the author was quick to assert that “OSUN DEFENDER understands that the year ‘2023’ as written on the invite was a typographical error that should have read as ‘2024’. However, this is a strong pointer to the fact that the attached letter of invite was the handiwork of mischief makers with latent mission to whittle down the remarkable feats of the Women Affairs Ministry in the last 5 months under the watch of the present Minister, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye. Otherwise, how can one explain the 29th January, 2023 date on the purported letter when the present dispensation was yet to assume office.

More so, it is erroneous to use the word ’has allegedly organized’ for an event which yet to take place. “has allegedly organized” is in simple past tenses, meaning that the event has already taken place while “is allegedly organizing” is in present continuous tenses. It then follows that the said publication is fraught with obvious contradictions in the author’s bid to push falsehood into the public space.

We are therefore urging well-meaning Nigerians to disregard the said on-line publication by the Osun Defender which is yet another figment of falsehood and calculated attempt to distract the Honorable Minister of Women of Affairs from sustaining her Ministry’s genuine and undiluted course to protect and promote the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerian women and the girl child.

Politics / Mammoth Crowd Storm Okene Street To Welcome Yahaya Bello by onojaintegrity: 7:27pm On Jan 29
…Thank him for sterling achievements, making them proud

In what they described as a celebration of “eight years of unprecedented strides”, indigenes and residents of Okene in Kogi State, on Sunday, trooped out in their thousands to welcome the immediate past Governor of the state, Yahaya Bello, back home after two impactful tenures.

They treated the White Lion, as he is fondly called, to a heroic homecoming ceremony at the ancient town, Okene, where Bello hails from.

With loud cheers, pomp and pageantry, the jubilant residents heaped praises on the immediate past governor over his sterling performance in office, with different clans performing with their masquerades amid the thick crowd that thronged the streets.

Before former Governor Bello arrived Okene, a crowd of residents of Lokoja, the state capital, had assembled on the highway linking the former governor’s country home to bid him farewell after successfully handing over to his successor, Governor Usman Ododo.

They lined up at the roadside and expressed gratitude to Bello, saying he had successfully transformed Kogi beyond their expectations in his two terms in office.

Some of the citizens who spoke after Bello’s convoy pulled over to acknowledge their greetings, said the former governor had left an indelible mark of achievements in the Confluence State.

When Bello’s convoy arrived at the entrance of Okene town, enthusiastic and proud indigenes/residents were seen waving at their kinsman in excitement.

As the convoy journeyed deeper into the heart of Okene, the town erupted in jubilation as the former governor’s kinsmen who adorned in ceremonial attire, accompanied by drums and trumpets, danced along the streets, saying Bello had elevated Okene and Kogi State to an enviable height.

The former governor visited his maternal ancestral home, where special prayers were offered in honour of the memory of his departed mother, seeking divine blessings for him as he returned home.

Also, Bello stormed the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, along with the new Governor of the state, Usman Ododo, where he was given a rousing welcome. The mammoth crowd seen at the palace was unprecedented.

The traditional ruler, HRM, Alhaji Ahmed Tijani, hailed former governor Bello’s transformative impact on Kogi state’s infrastructure and economy and congratulated Governor Ododo on his inauguration.

Meanwhile, former Governor Bello expressed his profound gratitude to the people of his hometown and Kogi State in general for the overwhelming reception accorded him.

While addressing his admirers, he urged citizens of the state to support the administration of Governor Usman Ododo for the continued development and transformation of the state.

“I am filled with joy over this overwhelming show of gratitude, happiness and love. It further attests to the impacts our government has made in the lives of Kogites. I humbly return all thanks and praises to the Almighty God. He alone is the Doer of everything we can lay claim to have done in office as a government. Without His enablement we would have been both helpless. To God be the Glory!

“Now, we can live with a clear conscience, confident that we did our best for Kogites within the time and resources available to us.

“I have successfully handed over to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. Ododo will need our support to succeed in the overall interest of the state. Once more, I want to thank you for this honour,” the former governor stated.

Politics / Child Terrorism: Federal Government Signs Pact With Un On Implementation Plan by onojaintegrity: 5:05pm On Jan 25
Further to coordinated efforts towards protecting Nigerian children from terrorism, the Federal Government has endorsed the handover protocol implementation plan with the United Nations for children encountered in the course of armed conflict in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin today in Abuja.

Prior to the endorsement, the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye recalled that the handover protocol agreement was signed on 30th September, 2022 between the Federal Government and the United Nations system in Nigeria including UNICEF with spelt out procedures for the identification and transfer of children associated with armed groups, care for the children while in the custody of Nigerian security agencies and arrangements for cross-border repatriation of children who are non-nationals.
She added that since the 2022 endorsement, significant results have been achieved with 153 children ( 60 girls and 93 boys) have been released by the Nigerian security agencies in the North East, Nigeria and handed over to the Borno State Ministry of Women Affairs.

While commending the role of inter-agency collaboration to drive this initiative, the Minister also reiterated her Ministry’s readiness for multi-sector implementation of the plan and indicated that the agreement takes cognizance of matters relating the interest of the child such as their rescue, rehabilitation and re-union with their family and society to guarantee quality and full physical and psychological recoveries of the children encountered in the course of armed conflict in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin region.

She therefore urged the UN systems in Nigeria, UNICEF and other relevant stakeholders involved in the handover protocol endorsement to work towards scaling up plans towards achieving set goals as the Women Affairs Ministry has already integrated the handover protocol into this year’s budget as part of measures to sustainably tackle challenges faced by children encountered in the course of armed conflict.

There were goodwill messages from representatives of the National Coordinator, National Counter Terrorism Centre, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defence Justice and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, the representative of the Chief of Army Staff while the UN Country Representative, Mrs. Christian Munduate presented the context overview of the handover protocol.

In her presentation, the UN Country representative expressed concerns that the children who are victims of armed conflicts also face grave human rights abuses and called for collective efforts to ensure proper reintegration and rehabilitation of about 4.9 million children in the North East among whom, 1.2 million are presently displaced internally.
Part of strategies proposed for the smooth coordination and full implementation of the Handover protocol include advocacy among key stakeholders including international communities, data collection for evidence based programing, capacity building for government entities on child protection frameworks and legislation and building capacity for scale-up of child protection service delivery.

Politics / Women Affairs Minister Unveils Blue Print Anchored On 5 Pillars by onojaintegrity: 11:48am On Oct 26, 2023
As part of measures towards aligning with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Honorable Minister of Women Affairs, Barr Uju Kennedy Ohanenye formally unveiled her Ministry’s blue print anchored on five pillars: Child Rights and protection, political empowerment, economic empowerment, digital empowerment and gender equality and social inclusion.

Making this declaration during a strategic session with Commissioners of Women Affairs drawn from the 36 states of the federation in Abuja, Barr Uju reiterated her concern towards the present plight of Nigerian women and girls adding that “ this strategic plan is intricately woven into the fabric of the eight Presidential priorities ensuring that our efforts are not only aligned with overarching vision for Nigeria but also specifically designed to address the unique challenges and aspirations of our women and children” she said.

Emphatically speaking, the Minister also added that “ I believe that the peculiar challenges we are facing as a nation can only be understood and driven better by Nigerians hence the several initiatives we have put in place to eradicate sexual and gender based violence, early child marriage, female gender mutilation, out-of-school children and abject poverty which has adversely affected our socio-economic, political and cultural growth as a nation” she also said.

She therefore charged the State Women Commissioners to embrace and vigorously pursue the initiatives and to cascade same down to the grassroots because according to her “ whatever initiatives you have as a government which do not permeate the rural areas cannot appeal to the general good and we need to change the present situation where women and children are denied the opportunity of advancing like women and children in other climes”

In her presentation, the UN Women Country Representative, Ms Beatrice Eyong stated that “ we find ourselves in a critical time of climate change, terrorism, criminality, non-inclusivity and other social vices which affects the collective strive for women to attain their full potentials and contribute to national growth. There is an urgent need for a change in the narratives” she said.
The Women Commissioners collectively commended the Minister for convening the strategic session which will go a long way to create uniformity for the Ministry’s programs and activities at the grass root level and pledged to align with the blueprint towards a better status for the Nigerian women and children.

Development partners such as UNICEF, UNFPA, Canadian High Commission and ECOWAS in addition to the National Council for Women Societies were also in attendance.

Intellectually mobile Minister!

Thank you
Politics / Dada Olusegun And The Power Of Determination by onojaintegrity: 5:23pm On Oct 13, 2023
After the 2022 FCT area council elections, where I ran for the Abuja Municipal Area Council Chairmanship and faced defeat, I was devastated. The loss lingered for weeks, shattering my expectations. I often cried in private.

During the APC Convention a few weeks later, I witnessed Dada Olusegun, a candidate for the party's Youth Leader position, break down on stage when asked to step aside for another candidate. Many on Twitter ridiculed him, but I empathized with his pain. Having experienced the agony of electoral defeat as a young politician, I reached out on Twitter to offer support, even though I faced backlash from the online mob because most where against anything or anyone that supports the All Progressive Congress.

Shortly after, Dada Olusegun posted a message encouraging young people who had lost elections to share their experiences. His post was heartening and supportive.

The anguish of a young person losing an election can shake their faith in society and their political passion. Look at some of Peter Obi's supporters in the 2023 presidential election; many have vowed never to vote again, and these are just supporters, not actual candidates.

But Olusegun didn't let his setback deter him. He persisted in serving and supporting the party that nearly dashed his service dreams. Unlike some of us who retreated from politics for a while, he remained dedicated. Today, he reaps the rewards, and I hope he serves to the best of his ability.

This should inspire young people who have sworn off voting. A setback isn't the end of the road; the journey is the destination, and challenges are part of the way.

I've had the chance to speak with many disillusioned young politicians who've lost interest in serving the people. Dada Olusegun's story is a testament to determination and resilience.

Finally, I want to highlight that the current administration has provided a platform for many young people to serve. The youth should see this as an opportunity to rise. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
