A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi, Benue State on Thursday, April 13, ordered that a 59-year-old man, Kelvin Iorfa for beating his sister to coma, IGBERETV reports.

The 59-year-old church deacon was seen in a viral video brutally beating his sister, Mrs. Nguwasen Iorfa. He used what looked like a belt to whip the young woman until she fell to the ground.

He then used a travelling bag to hit the lady until she fell and became unconscious. Even then, he kept kicking her and screaming at her as she lay on the ground.

The police charged Iorfa with assault and attempted culpable homicide.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Godwin Ato told the court that the case was reported at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi by Jenkies Shade of KM 4 Gboko Road, Makurdi on April 11.

Ato alleged that on April 10, Shade reported that Iorfa ruthlessly brutalised his older sister, Nguwasen of Clerk Quarters, Makurdi.

"He hit her with an object on her head and other sensitive parts of her body until she became unconscious,” the prosecutor said.

Following the petition, the prosecutor told the court that police detectives arrested Iorfa and he confessed to the crime.

He said the offence contravenes the provisions of Sections 266 and 230 of the Penal Code Law of Benue State 2004.

The prosecutor, who said investigation into the matter was still ongoing, prayed for an adjournment.

In his statement the suspect confessed that he had a heated argument with his younger sister, and it provoked him to beat her up that much.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Roseline Iyorshe, did not take the plea of Iorfa for want in jurisdiction.

Iyorshe ordered the police to return the case file to the Benue Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. She adjourned the case until June 8, for further mention.

A 56-year-old pastor, Emmanuel Adebayo, has been charged with murder of his tenant - a 50-year-old woman, identified as Toyin Olatunji, IGBERETV reports.

An Akure Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, April 13, ordered the remand the defendant, said to be a pastor of Christ Apostolic Church after he was arrested in his residence by the police, in connection with the woman’s death.

The prosecutor, Abdulateef Suliaman, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 4, 2023 at about 3pm at No.14 Moferere Street Owe-Akala, Akure.

Suliaman said that a quarrel ensued between the duo and out of annoyance, the defendant unlawfully killed the woman, by pushing her on the floor. According to the prosecutor, the defendant’s action led to the woman being unconscious and resulted to her death. He added that the offence contravenes Sections 316 and 310 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo, 2006.

The prosecutor, through an application urged the court to remand the defendant in the correctional custody, pending issuance of advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions(DPP).

The defence counsel prayed the court for an adjournment to enable his client file a counter affidavit to the application sought by the prosecutor.

Magistrate Tope Aladejana ordered the remand of the defendant in Olokuta Correctional Centre and adjourned the case till April 27, for ruling.

Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State docked two market women on Thursday, April 13, for allegedly defaming a colleague on social media, IGBERETV reports

The police charged Aminatu Wasiu, 36, and Opeyemi Adewole, 36, with conspiracy, conduct likely to cause breach of peace and defamation of character.

The prosecution counsel, Mr Philip Amusan, told the court that the two women committed the offence on April 10, around 4 p.m, in Ogunpa market, Ibadan.

Amusan alleged that the women deliberately injured the reputation of their fellow market woman, Ajoke Coker, by posting her picture with the caption: ‘Ajoke is a thief ‘ on social media. He alleged that they conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by posting their fellow woman’s photograph and captioning it on social media.

Amusan said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 516, 375 and 249(d) of the Criminal laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. A Akande, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N100,000 each with one surety in like sum. She adjourned the case until May 4 for hearing.

Kano State Governor-Elect, Abba Kabir Yusuf has said that his wives and children will not have any role in the governance of the state, IGBERETV reports.

Yusuf said this after receiving his certificate of return today, March 29. He stated that his family members won't have any influence on governance during his administration because they won't be taking the oath of office with him.

He said;

“My wives will not be part of the governance. My children will not be part of the governance. And I can tell you for sure that this is the same for my deputy governor.”

The Governor-Elect also called on the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir Yusuf Gawuna and other contestants in the March 18 election to join his administration for effective governance of Kano state.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly defiling a nine-month-old baby in Railway Ijora Badia area of the state, IGBERETV reports.

Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson of the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, told newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, that the case was reported to the Police on Monday at about 10:00pm by a concerned member of the public.

According to Hundeyin, the suspect allegedly went to the apartment where the baby’s mother laid her on the floor, and quickly went to buy something outside the compound.

“The suspect allegedly had sexual intercourse with the little baby and immediately ran away from the scene,” the PPRO stated.

"The mother of the baby, aged 16 years, came to the station with the baby and was issued medical form to enable her take the child to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

“However, on Tuesday at about 11:15pm, the suspect was smoked out from his hiding by detectives from Ijora Badia Division,"

The spokesman said that the complainant and suspect have made statements, adding that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.

Hundeyin said that the scene of the crime was photographed when the police visited and a stained pant with blood was recovered as an exhibit. He said that the case file and suspect will be transferred to the Gender Section of the state command.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha has been suspended by the All Progressives Congress in his ward, IGBERETV reports.

Muazu Kabiri, an official of the party in Gwadabawa Ward of Jimeta, said the SGF did not make meaningful contribution to the party during the elections.

He noted that the SGF lost his polling unit to the Peoples Democratic Party at the presidential and governorship polls.

But the Adamawa State chapter of the APC has kicked against the action, saying the ward has no right to suspend Mustapha.

An elderly man, Simon Maduekwe, has died from the shock he suffered after suspected political thugs invaded his residence on Fatomi Crescent, Off Bajulaiye Compound, Shomolu, Lagos State, IGBERETV reports.

Late Maduekwe and other residents of the area who cast their votes for their preferred candidate in the Lagos governorship election learnt that some political thugs warned voters against voting for another candidate other than their preferred candidate. Late Maduekwe left the polling unit for his house after casting his vote.

His son, Chuka, said his late father was at home when one of the political thugs, while subjecting some of the voters to different forms of intimidation and suppression, spotted a resident capturing the moments on his mobile phone. The political thug, thereafter, raised the alarm which attracted the attention of his accomplices and Chuka said they gave the resident, who firmly held onto his phone, a hot chase. In a desperate attempt to escape, the aggrieved son said the yet-to-be-identified resident ran into his father’s residence, adding that thugs chased after him.

Chuka explained that Maduekwe, who was not aware of what had transpired outside his home, upon sighting the thugs on his premises, thought they were there to attack him for voting against their preferred candidate, adding that his father slumped at the sight of the hoodlums coming towards him.

“My dad had gone to vote as early as 8am because the polling unit was in front of our compound on Fatomi Crescent, Off Bajulaiye Compound, Somolu, Lagos State. That morning, there was noise at the polling unit as suspected thugs were threatening people to vote for their party, and scaring away those not willing to do their bidding. We also heard them shouting at a particular guy making a video of them. When they sighted the guy, they started chasing him, so he ran straight into our compound, and into our apartment. My dad was standing at the door and as the guy and the thugs ran towards him, he collapsed.

Immediately, we tried to revive him but couldn’t, so, we rushed him to the Somolu General Hospital and a nurse confirmed to us that he was dead. My dad had high blood pressure and has not been doing business for over a year as we have been doing all to keep him alive but he died because of the incident during the election.”he said

Chuka, while lamenting over the incident, said his mother had been traumatized by the development.

“My family has been mourning over the incident. My mum is just trying to get hold of what happened, we never anticipated that this election will take him away from us,” he said.

An eyewitness, Samson Duru, described Maduekwe, 68, as a peaceful man who always warned youths against illicit activities during the election period, adding that the deceased was among the people cautioning the thugs against tampering with the election process in the area.

“The man was shouting at one of the thugs to leave the polling unit and allow people to vote for the candidate of their choice before he left for his house. The whole incident happened some minutes after. He is such a peaceful man who does not like trouble; I pray that his family will be able to bear their loss.”

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, has dismissed reports of widespread acts of violence and voter suppression in the state governorship election held on Saturday, March 18, IGBERETV reports.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Owohunwa confirmed the attacks on voters and electoral officers recorded at some Lagos polling units, saying, “It is true that we’ve recorded instances of violence in some areas within the state.” He however added that the incidents were “not as widespread as to affect the general dynamics of the process”.

According to him, most of the instances were “properly responded to by the police because we anticipated them”.

When asked if the command had anticipated the violence, he said, “Yes, in some instances. As security practitioners, when you plan operations of this nature, you must anticipate that some elements will want to become adversaries in the process. We anticipated and then we integrated that into our general operational plan and we activated that protocol effectively in this instance. Most of those breaches, the police were able to respond promptly.”

Owohunwa also responded to the claims accompanying some viral videos of alleged incidents of ballot box snatching.

Regarding a video of voters supposedly overpowering a young man alleged to have snatched a ballot box, the police commissioner said

“That in itself is illegal; two wrongs cannot make a right.”

He added that contrary to information on social media, the young man is alive, after he was rescued by the police and other security agencies and that the suspected electoral offender was receiving medical attention.

"He’s stable; he’s not dead,” Owohunwa said

The CP noted that the police were compiling cases within the purview, saying “a lot of arrests” and “recoveries” had been made.

“In most of those cases of ballot box snatching, we recovered virtually all the ballot boxes'', he said.

Speaking on reports of disenfranchisement in Eti-Osa Local Government Area (LGA), Owohunwa stated that the area had not presented a major challenge.

“Rather, where we have issues now, I think, is around VGC [Victoria Garden City], specifically anyway, and the issue had to do more with the relocation of the polling units from the within the estate to a location outside the gate,” he said.

“That falls within the mandate of INEC, and when my attention was drawn to it, I drew the attention of the REC to the development. As we speak, he has personally gone to the location and is trying to engage the electorate, so that they can find a common ground.”

The Lagos state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked the police to arrest the governorship candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the state, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, over the statement he made on Saturday, about the elections, IGBERETV reports.

In his reaction to several incidents of violence recorded in some parts of the state, Gbadebo expressed displeasure over the election, stating that “if tonight, Lagos catches fire, it is not our fault.”

Reacting to the comment, the APC in a statement released by its publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, cautioned Rhodes-Vivour and asked the police to arrest him if Lagos boils.

The attention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to a statement made by Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate Gbadebo Chinedu Rhodes-Vivour on today’s elections.

He accuses the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the police of “provoking Lagosians” and warning that “if tonight Lagos catches fire, it is not our fault”. He says “a lot of places are still under attack by thugs and hooligans of the APC”.
This scaremongering is typical of bad losers who lack the spirit of sportsmanship.

The security agencies should note Mr Rhodes-Vivour’s threat to set Lagos on fire as his predilection for violence and warmongering is well known to Nigerians. Should there be any breakdown of law and order in any part of our state, law enforcement agencies should know who to grab - Mr Rhodes-Vivour.

We are compiling reports of how APC supporters were harassed and attacked today. Some of the reports are really scary.

Now the LP candidate is playing the victim. This old trick won’t work; discerning Lagosians know they are all lies deployed to attract sympathy. Our party has no need to be violent because we are sure of the glittering credentials of our candidate Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu who will never be associated with violence.

The National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has admitted that the conduct of the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly poll was not perfect, IGBERETV reports.

Adamu admitted this while giving his speech during a parley of APC National Working Committee with the president-elect, Bola Tinubu; vice president-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima and members-elect of the National Assembly.

Speaking at the meeting which was also attended by Senate President Ahmed Lawan; Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; Senator Godswill Akpabio, among others, the APC national chairman said;

“I very heartily congratulate all the distinguished men and women elect. I salute you all. You are the new team Nigeria. From May 29 this year, the burden of our national unity, peace, and development will rest on your shoulders as a team.

“It is fair and honourable to admit that the February 25 elections were not perfect. We did not set out to conduct perfect elections.

“World history has no instances of perfect elections. Like all other democratic nations, we set out to conduct free, fair, and credible elections. This we did.

We do not have to belong to group that has the numbers to rule or to live any where in Nigeria.Our backgrounds and ethnic origin should not be a deterrent to our political dreams and aspiration, the thought of their ethnic origin and strength has killed so many aspirants who ordinarily would have been able to take the nation to a crescendo by way of the content of their character and ability but these dreams have been sacrificed on the altar of ethnicity.
I dare to say that no ethnic group is our problem. Some of our representatives remains our problems.
Every Nigerian born in any state should have a right of citizenship of that state. Consider that even our traditions require that the corpse of the deceased are returned to their places of origin this can only happen in a country divided by ethnicity.

Citizenship should be about residence, marriage and the land of our birth. We must not continue to demonise the man from Zamfara who is born in Owerri he should have all right even the right to becoming the governor in Imo State. In the same vain the man from Nnewi born in Lagos should have same entitlement in Lagos.

The continuous reference to go your state when we question bad governance or want to vote a leaders where we live but yet we are not told to go pay our taxes to our state should be put to a stop everyone should have a voice where he lives not where he was supposed to be from. Then and only then will we see ourselves as a one Nigeria and not by federal character.

Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos state, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour said he schooled abroad for long, hence his inability to speak Yoruba fluently, IGBERETV reports.

Gbadebo said this during an interview with Arise TV on Sunday, March 12, while he responded to those who troll him for not being able to speak fluent Yoruba language.

He further said that though he understands Yoruba, he has hired a Yoruba language teacher to help him get better.

Five members of a family have died after inhaling generator fumes in Bisodun village in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, IGBERETV reports.

According to reports, the remains of the victims were discovered by residents of the community in the early hours of Thursday, March 9, 2023, after perceiving unwanted odour coming from their house.

The family members were identified as Rahman Adeshina, Fatimah Adeshina, Awaal Adeshina, Ahmed Adeshina and Raimot Adeshina.

A source said the family left the generator working all night while they went to bed, noting that they might have been suffocated to death by the deadly fumes from the generator. According to the source, the victims died on Tuesday, while their remains were discovered two days after.

“They put the generator inside to prevent it from being stolen. The family died as a result of the fumes coming out from the generator The dead bodies were discovered on Thursday inside their house at Bisodun village but they might have died since Tuesday. The dead bodies had been recovered and deposited at OOUTH, Sagamu for autopsy.” the source revealed.

A resident, Tajudeen Ogunpola, said the family which consists of a father, mother, and three children were last seen alive on Tuesday afternoon.

I saw them on Tuesday afternoon, they were easygoing people. It was the odour coming from the family that attracted us. When we got there, we met the three children lying lifeless on the bed in the room, while their parent’s remains were in the parlour. We were the ones that called the police. They took their corpses away and I believe they have called their relatives."

A resident, Tajudeen Ogunpola, said the family which consists of a father, mother, and three children were last seen alive on Tuesday afternoon.

I saw them on Tuesday afternoon, they were easygoing people. It was the odour coming from the family that attracted us. When we got there, we met the three children lying lifeless on the bed in the room, while their parent’s remains were in the parlour. We were the ones that called the police. They took their corpses away and I believe they have called their relatives."

A public health expert in Ogun state, Dr. Yusuf Lapite, attributed the death to improper positioning of the generator set, adding that the victims might have inhaled the fumes for several hours.

Dr. Lapite explained that inhaling generator fumes for several hours easily damages the lungs and victims of such may be choked to death.

He, however, advised that the generator should be placed far away from the house to avoid getting in contact with the dangerous carbon coming out of it.

“Whatever is in the air that you inhale ends up in your lungs, whatever that comes out from the generator has carbon in it. It is dangerous to be putting a generator close to your home because when you are enclosed to generator fumes, you can die from them. A generator should be put in an open space and far away from where you are staying; people should not put it close to where they live.” Dr. Lapite sai

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said the remains of the victims had been released to the family for burial. “They have been buried today, we have released their corpses to their family”, the PPRO said.

"Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta State, has started transferring state funds to civil servants so they can vote for Sheriff Oborevwori, the PDP gov candidate, on Saturday.

Very unlikely it will translate to votes, as numerous civil servants have a political axe to grind.

"This is already evident in the result of the presidential election in Delta, where Atiku, despite his running mate Okowa hailing from the state, polled only 161,600 votes -- far less than half of Peter Obi's 341,866 votes."

A pregnant woman has been gang-raped by two cattle herders in Abuja. The two herders, Nuru Tukur (21) and Yusufa Haruna (29), pleaded guilty to abducting and raping the woman after being arraigned before an area court in Gwagwalada in the FCT on Tuesday, March 7, IGBERETV reports.

The Prosecutor, Dabo Yakubu, told the court that the defendants abducted the woman who was eight months pregnant from her house in Abaji Area Council of the FCT, took her to a bush where both of them raped her.

One Abubakar Wakili of Yaba in Abaji Area Council reported the matter at Gwagwalada Area Command office on February 26.

The Judge, Malam Abdullahi Abdulkarim, deferred sentencing in order for him to see and know the condition of the victim. He however ordered that they be remanded in a correctional centre pending sentencing on March 22.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has responded to questions on who ordered the shooting of EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate on October 20, [/b]2020, IGBERETV reports.

In the year 2020, young Nigerians came out in their numbers to protest against police brutality, which took place in many parts of the country. On October 20, 2020, Nigerian youths who normally converge at the Lekki tollgate to protest, were attacked by military officers who opened fire at the protest group.
