Politics › Re: Blame Buhari Not Tinubu For Economic Hardship, Sanusi Tells Nigerians by Onuimo1(m): 10:32am On Feb 12, 2024 |
omohayek: Where exactly was Tinubu supposed to get the money from to "put in place to cushion the effects"? You already read that the reason Tinubu was forced to (partially) remove the subsidy in the first place was because the FG could no longer afford it! Did you not bother to read where Sanusi said debt servicing was already eating up nearly 100% of government revenues?
The harsh reality is that Nigeria is broke, and international interest rates have skyrocketed since Buhari went on his 8-year borrowing spree. Nobody was going to lend money to Nigeria to squander on a foolish subsidy scheme whose biggest beneficiaries were smugglers and the citizens of other ECOWAS countries. The only other source of funding left without raising taxes is simply to hope you can print more money faster than people can demand higher wages and "palliatives", and this attempt to paper the cracks through printing more money is what is causing the skyrocketing inflation we are seeing right now.
There is no magic wand that could have prevented hard times from befalling Nigerians. If Xi Jinping in China and Joe Biden in the USA can't shield their people from higher interest rates, it isn't the president of a dirt-poor Third-World country who can manage the feat. Nigerians would still be facing hard times right now even if Tinubu and all his cabinet members had Nobel Prizes in economics, and neither Obi nor Atiku could have done any better in providing "palliatives" without accelerating inflation.
If Tinubu is to be faulted, it is for his institution of half-measures that will needlessly prolong this crisis, out of a fear of public backlash. Despite all the moaning and groaning on here, Tinubu has not really abolished the petrol subsidy, he just (temporarily) reduced the amount, and with inflation accelerating, the scale of the subsidy is ballooning once again because petrol prices have not been deregulated. Tinubu has not allowed Cardoso to raise interest rates to a level that will curb inflation and draw foreign investment. Finally, Tinubu has not made any serious effort to reduce the FG's wage bill by launching an ambitious privatization programme. All of these things are vital to restore investor confidence and kickstart growth, and Tinubu knows they are necessary, but he is so paralyzed by fear of even worse public reaction that he has now settled into tinkering here and there instead of giving Nigeria the strong medicine it needs - and yet ignoramuses like you whine endlessly as if he had a magic wand that could painlessly solve all your problems overnight. There's no point trying to defend these guys in power reason is this: Tinubu never said he's going to remove subsidy partially get it clear. It was an outright removal, not until marketers began to expose the rot in the system. Nigeria is broke, but there will be billions to renovate vice president's apartment, and that of Chief of staff. Our foreign reserve is depleted our lawmakers are buying 150m each SUVs. Remember we still borrowed money from The world bank. You heard what the Zambian and Kenyan presidents did respectively,No foreign trips for govt.officials, even the president. The Zambian president is supposed to buy a brand new vehicles but he said no, it's still the old one he's using. What I'm I trying to say, they're making sacrifices starting from the top. But what we have here are people telling us to tighten our belts while they squander our Commonwealth. |

ElSudani: How would you know if Tinubu gave any advice or not? He removed subsidy because Nigeria could no longer afford it. Did you read the piece at all or you are just fixated on your regular talking points. Ogbeni shift. Nigeria could no longer afford it and what did he put in place to cushion the effects. He's giving out palliatives that governors are looting. Don't you that with the current fx, PMS should be sold above #900. Who's filling the gap. And you said subsidy is gone. |

Sanusi should take a back seat please. When will this blame game stop. Tinubu supported Buhari for good 8 years. During those years why didn't he (Tinubu) bring out ideas and solutions/suggestions for Buhari to work with as per person wey build Lagos. But he was busy waiting for the Barton to be passed to him by INEC, which they did. On his day of inauguration he removed subsidy without no plans to cushion the effects. So how many people has died because of this match. People should resist from attaching too much emotions while watching football games of their favourite teams. I didn't even want to know the outcome not until I started hearing people shouting on the street. |

This is what some people want for this country because one party animal who has turned a football fan lost an election.
Whether there is war or not because of the current hardship in the country, Biafra won't be achieved.
Hardship or not, Tinubu till 2031, Shettima from 2031 to 2039, Wike from 2039.
People from a region that are not pleased can go and hug transformer.
How are people even coping now?
There is hunger in the land but we hope things get better soon. It's when you come across comments like this that one begins to wonder where is this person's conscience. What this low life is concerned about is people from the other side should not become president, even when citizens are crying to survive the harsh economy. Shame on you. They have protested in Kano and Niger states. They're shouting EBIN KPA WA in Lagos state. What have you heard from people from the other side. Una never see anything. |
