Politics / Why We Are Running Away From Our People After Elections – Katsina Speaker by Onyemadonald(m): 12:53pm On Dec 08, 2016
The Speaker of Katsina State House of Assembly,
Aliyu Sabiu Muduru, has given reasons why some
lawmakers avoid their their constituencies, saying
that the decision of the lawmakers may not be
unconnected with how people make personal
demands rather than collective needs of the
electorate.

Muduru made the disclosure at a one day
interactive forum tagged “Citizens Conservation
and National Interest” organized by National
Orientation Agency (NOA) in collaboration with a
German based foundation, Konrad Adenauer
Stiftung, held at Liyafa Palace Hotel Katsina.
He urged the stakeholders to enlighten the public
on the primary role of the elected public officials
in order to overcome one the challenges facing the
smooth growth of democracy and ensure that law
makers do not shy from the electorate.

Reviewing the score card of the house, Muduru
disclosed that the state legislators had passed no
fewer than 18 bills into law and endorsed over 130
motions in their efforts to render quality service
to the electorate in the current legislative year.
In his keynote address, second republic law maker,
Senator Abba Ali, expressed worry that most
members of the national and state assemblies shun
their constituencies after their election.

Citing greed and ingratitude of some law makers
as the actual reason many of them shun their
electorate, the chieftain of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) urged them to always remember
their social contract with their people.
“Many senators and members of the House of
Representatives are particularly found guilty of
this negative attitude. Probably due to greed and
not appreciating or realizing or conceding to the
fact that it is the huge sum of money they
collected every now and then as genuine and less
than genuine allowances and constituency projects
that cause the rush,” he said.

Earlier, the state director of NOA, Armaya’u Liti
Rimaye, noted that the programme was designed
to promote transparency and accountability in
governance as well as create awareness among
stakeholders on government business.
He was also optimistic that the forum would
promote democracy, rule of law, unity and dignity
of labour while creating a platform for public
education.

Politics / Cattle Rustlers Hits Katsina, Gov Masari Vows To ‘ruthlessly’ Deal With Them by Onyemadonald(m): 11:30am On Dec 02, 2016
Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State has
threatened to deal with anybody or group, whose
activities in the state poses danger to law-abiding
residents.

The governor spoke in Dungun Muazu village in
Sabuwa Local Council area yesterday, when he
commiserated with the people. Some armed men
alleged to be cattle rustlers had killed eight
members of the community last week.
The governor said: “There was no reason why some
criminals would hold the society to ransom when
the government has the resources, the military
might and the willpower to deal with the
situation.”

He, however, cautioned against passing a blanket
judgment on the Fulani herdsmen on account of an
attack by few bad elements. He said his
administration was determined to deal with
criminals, but promised to ensure that the innocent
ones were not wrongly punished.
The governor said it would amount to injustice to
punish all the herdsmen because no ethnic group
had the monopoly of violence. Masari appealed to
the security agencies and the traditional rulers to
be fair in their dealings with the people, adding
that justice and fairness were the necessary
ingredients for peace.

According to him, the discontent in the society is
often caused by the absence of justice and
fairness from those in the positions of authority.
The governor also canvassed support for the
Federal government’s ‘Green Alternative’ policy to
revive agriculture and livestock in the country.
He said while agricultural resources may last
forever, other natural resources like crude oil and
solid minerals were transient. He said the green
alternative policy could only succeed if farmers
and herdsmen live peacefully with one another.

Business / INTRESTING! How Making ‘clay Pots’ Business thrives At Ajiwa, KATSINA by Onyemadonald(m): 7:12am On Nov 29, 2016
For the people of Ajiwa town in Batagarawa Local Government Area of Katsina State, pottery has been a source of livelihood for many years. Aside agriculture, pottery has remained the main occupation of the people. The town, which is about 15 kilometres from the state capital, is blessed with a rich soil forfarming and pot-making. Over the years, the clay soil has provided a means of livelihood for the teeming population of the town as most of them engage in pottery, especially during the dry season.A visitor to the town is always greeted with beautiful display of pots along the road, waiting for prospective buyers. The pots are usually made by men, women and the youth. There is hardly any house in the town that does not engage in such venture.People from every part the country visit the town, especially on Tuesdays , which is their market day, to either buy foodstuff or purchase pots.
The clay pots are of different types and sizes, each with its unique features and design. Their costs also differ. Some of the pots are called ‘Yar wanka, Karhi, Kulo, Kafi Talle and Asusu. In the olden days, locals use these pots for cooking and storage, but with modernisation, people use them for flowers, incense, beautification and as gift items during naming or wedding ceremonies, amongst others. The history of pottery in the town dates backto hundreds of years. Most people, especially the elders, said they inherited the art of pottery. Thus, it has been passed on from generation to generation.
An octogenarian, Malam Salisu Mohammad said, “I have been in this pottery business for the past 65 years of my life. And this is what I only know how to do best.“To tell you how it all started is immaterial; what is more important is how it has helped sustain us all these years.“People come from far and near to patronise us. There is blessing in this business and I havewitnessed it.“I raised my children through this business. I feed and live on it. Some of my children are also in it. It is a heritage from my parents and I intend to pass it on to my children.“I just completed this set of 100 incense burners for a client who ordered them for her upcoming wedding. This is just among the many orders we receive on a daily basis.’’Sani Alange, who has spent over 25 years in the pottery business, said he inherited the trade from his parents. He makes an average of 20 big pots in a day, which costs between N250 to N350, depending on the type and design. He said that pottery, as an art, requires a lot of skills and craftsmanship to attract prospective buyers.
According to him, this has become necessary because most buyers use the pots to decorate their homes. He said a pot maker would usually start the process by getting the best clay soil known as laka in local parlance, and some special breeds of grasses, which are mixed to come up with the product before heating them up in a special furnace to add value to them.“There is what we call ‘Yar Rufi, a master pot we usually run over the moulded clay to get its replica, after which it is removed and worked upon to get the perfect pot size before heading to the furnace.“
A good potter will place his finished productson at least three hours of heat in the furnace, for perfect, strong and quality work, before the painting stage,’’ he said.Hassan Adamu, one of the youths who make pots in the town, said it’s a good venture that does not require much capital, adding that the returns are appreciable. He said there was the need for government to protect local producers.“It is disheartening to see that despite all we do here, people still find it necessary to import decorated clay pots from China and other places. With support from the government we can produce better pots than what they bring outside the country,’’ he said.Hajiya Khadija Aliyu told Daily Trust on Sunday that pottery is part of her life and source of income over the years. “From this business I was able to support my family and marry off my daughters.“Most of my customers are women. They patronise me, especially when there is a wedding ceremony. Of recent, I sold my incense burners to a woman who came all the way from Abuja.“So, you can see that I love this work and will continue to do it. What is needed is for government to come in and support us to enable us do more. We can do better. Althoughwe are not fully equipped, this trade has helped us,’’ she said.
A recent visit to the town revealed that a centre built by the government to support women in the pottery business has been abandoned and in a dilapidated condition.Investigation showed that most of the equipment provided for the centre have rusted and most part of the structures vandalised. Of the three furnaces provided for the heating of the pots, only one is partially working. Grasses and reptiles have taken over most parts But during a familiarisation tour of the comatose women centre at Ajiwa, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Badiya Mashi, said government would do everything within its power to resuscitate it.

Jobs/Vacancies / N-power: FG To Disqualify Those Without Teaching Qualifications by Onyemadonald(m): 10:59am On Nov 27, 2016
The Federal Government has agreed to ban unqualified and unregistered teachers from classrooms nationwide, the Registrar/Chief Executive of Teachers Registration Council ofNigeria, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, has said.According to him, the government will not consider teachers without registration certificates and TRCN licence for its 500,000 teachers’ recruitment scheme.

He stated that already, the decision had beenjointly endorsed by President Muhammadu Buhari; the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah. Ajiboye said this on Wednesday in Abuja during the 10th Education Conference organised by the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, with the theme, “Improving Education standards and emulating the global perspective and practices.”

He said, “Presently, it has been accepted by the Federal Government; the President, and ministers of education have agreed that no one again that is not qualified and is not registered with the TRCN will stand and teachin our classrooms.“I can assure you that no one will be employedas a teacher by the Federal Government without licence and registration certificate.
We are calling on all teachers to register, if you know yourself and you refer to yourself as a professional teacher, you must be registered with the TRCN. You must carry ourcertificate and our licence. “At the last induction ceremony that was conducted last week in OAU (Obafemi AwolowoUniversity), Ile-Ife, six professors registered with the TRCN and 14 other academics were also inducted into the teaching profession.
”While calling on teachers both in public and private schools to ensure they were duly registered and licensed by the TRCN, Ajiboye said the Kaduna State Government, had directed its teachers to obtain their licences and registration certificates before they could be promoted. He said, “Teachers in private schools are also expected to be registered and licensed by theTRCN.

According to the law establishing the council we are the ones who can talk about whois a teacher in this country.“Currently, teachers in private schools are responding to TRCN’s call for them to register. Now we are in the level of persuasionwhen we move beyond this level we will go to the enforcement of the law.”The President of NAPPS, Dr. Sally Adukwu-Bolujoko, called on the Federal Government toinvest 50 per cent of the budget in education every year for the next 20 years to revamp public schools. He added, “From 2012 to date, all the budgetsin education have just been about 11 per cent, whereas you know that UNESCO’s benchmark for developing country is 26 per cent. Countries like Senegal and Ivory Coast have started to give more than 26 per cent. With our large population, and the biggest economyin Africa, we have not reached half the mark of UNESCO.

“The state of our public schools is appalling. Itis not a place where value is given. It is a placewhere the values children acquire from good homes get eroded. We are asking that as a matter of strategy, focus on education by funding it and having the political will to driveand to monitor our money till it delivers results.“We are bothered that the Nigerian child’s education is poor, under the threes, dilapidated houses, sitting on bricks and on the floor. Every child should be captured in school. No longer should a Nigerian child be at home or hawking when others are in school.”

Romance / 10 Things Men ALWAYS Pay Attention To In Women! by Onyemadonald(m): 10:39am On Nov 27, 2016
There are real legends about the male inattentiveness. But in reality many of those stories are just the myths. When a man chooses a woman he looks not only at her breasts. You will be surprised to find out that they pay attention to really lots of small elements of your image!
1. Eyes: This is perhaps the first that arrests sight of a man, especially at the first acquaintance. The form, colour, eye shape – all this works as a trigger and makes them find out what hidesbehind these eyes.

2. Teeth: The female smile has a magnetic effect on men and is a some kind of the attractive indicator. Many representatives of the strong sex confess that they want to see a smile rather than “duck lips” on the photo of a lady. So, there is the point to take care of your teeth to make them look white and even. And he will have not a single chance!

3. Hair: To tell the secret, men are mad about beautiful, long and healthy hair. It doesn’t matter whether you are a blonde or brunette. If your hairdo fits you, your hair is healthy and curls are springy and thick – he will not take eyes away from you.

4. Skin: You don’t need to be a model from the cover of the magazine to have shiny skin. And men are not looking for this. But just believe that he will notice the difference between a woman who looks after her skin and the one who doesn’t bother to do at least something with it. Luckily, the three bases of beautiful skin – cleaning, moisturising and nutrition – can really do miracles.

5. Clothes: It is pleasant for any man to have a girl by hisside who is well-dressed but who is not looking vulgar or plain. They are especially attracted by feminine dresses. As Evelina Khromtchenko once said:“Sometimes, for getting married, a woman misses a single skirt.”

6. Posture: This story is not only about the even back. Theeven posture tells about the inner self-assurance and purposefulness. And a woman who can place herself in life is highly valued by men!

7. Lips: This is one of the secrets of attractiveness ofMarilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox.But you shouldn’t obligatory have the lips of the same size to rise admiration of the opposite sex. The only thing in which men show the surprising solidarity is the absence of lipstick. Of course, it looks beautiful from theside, but no one actually wishes to kiss generously painted lips.

8. Fingers: Well-cared female hands can’t look unattractive. The same thing (but vice versa) can be said about the uncared hands. Here is the iron reason to make masks and manicure in time. Especially if you like to complement your speech with gesticulation.

9. Voice: Men adore the female voice, especially when you laugh. Of course, you don’t need to do anything with your voice. But just note that singing of very melodious songs can make it sound more beautiful.

10. Eyebrows: Nowadays, there is a real revolution of eyebrows. They keep on moving to the natural ideal, and men really love this. Because eyebrows give the additional shape to face and make it more expressive.

These pieces of advice not only can but must work for the benefit of your attractiveness! That’s why, remember next time: he did notice. He simply didn’t tell you anything

Politics / 2019: Arewa Needs Generational Shift by Onyemadonald(m): 3:01pm On Nov 25, 2016
The darkening clouds of uncertainty looming over the 2019 political horizon in the North have a chilling effect comparable aptly to thebleak and breezy harmattan currently enveloping the region. From the dizzying drama that heralded the epic election victoryand resurgence of Arewa’s dominance over national geo-politics spearheaded by President Muhammadu Buhari, we have descended into the doldrums of economic hardship and political despondency. Our aged political leadership elite inspire little or no hope but provoke rising resentment from a burgeoning population of the new generation northerners dismayed and desperate about their disastrous legacies plaguing the region. With the old brigade’s last chance opportunityto redeem capacity and credibility now blown into the debris of the dissipated Buhari tsunami, there is a crying need for a groundswell generational shift if Arewa’s 2019 prospects are to be sustained and salvaged. In the twilight of the era of politics of Sardauna nostalgia, the surviving old brigade and their recycled off-shoots have committed hara-kiri by collectively collapsingat the feet of their talakawa, now traumatized into rebellious rejection of “elder statesmanship”. Still reeling from the ravaging impact of dashed hopes, today’s northerner has definitely had enough of the sit-tight monopoly of leadership without development associated with the recycling retinue of so-called presidential politicians from the region. The serial presidential contestants see only vistas for personal and clannish aggrandisement as they scramble and squabble for power and privilege, exploiting the endemic poverty, ignorance andprimordial sentiments of ethnicity and religion in the region as camouflage. It is just as well that the likes of Atiku and ElRufai engage in self-incriminating exchanges as a rude reminder of their leopard-spots and a timely trigger for the much-needed generational shift in Arewa leadership class.Come to think of it, where is the one northernpolitical leader commanding reasonable respect and followership throughout the region still standing tall today with an unblemished record? Most have passed on andthe others have been overtaken by the vicissitudes of time and events. As with population science, a political leadership class that ages without allowing the natural due process of generational replacement casts a curse of diminishing relevance and progress on their successors and indeed the unborn generations. The current political predicament of Arewa depicts this tragic depletion of credible leaders at a critical time of need for sustenance and consolidationof the fortuitous national realignment that gave Arewa a new lease on life in the 2015 presidential elections. The south west could have been in a similar conundrum by now but by virtue of the relative advancement of its political culture and the foresight of its old generation of political leaders, the ladder was accessible to the upcoming politicians. That is why there is Bola Tinubu as a widely recognized and influential national leader symbolic of a generational shift from the Awolowos and theBola Iges. It was this generational shift that provided a bridge across which the south west transited into a major stakeholder and strategic partner in the dynamics of presidential politics with the epochal trans-regional political alliance engineered principally by the Tinubu Movement for the momentous outcome of the 2015 elections. It also provided a spring board for Arewa’s reclamation of the Presidency. That generational shift also gives the south west a recharged leverage in determining the tempoand outcome of the dynamics of presidential politics moving into the foreseeable future. In the light of this reality, the circumstances leading to the seemingly unavoidable collapseof the historic political alliance packaged into the APC are especially worrisome from the Arewa perspective as the main beneficiary. The undeniable cause of the mishap resides in the rush and rash manner the alliance was conceived and implemented. But having achieved the intended success in regaining the Presidency much more was expected of the Buhari Presidency to whom all was given. It was a classical political blunder to disregard the south west ladder on which it ascended in the euphoria of victory and incumbency, a blunder that could very well put paid even to the presumed entitlement toa second term in 2019. The bottom line is that Arewa cannot succeed on its own terms and just has to engage and secure the confidence and support of the south in general but especially the south west.Clearly, the body politic of the south west/Arewa 2015 alliance owes more to the pre-existing formal and informal mutual political rapport and partnership across partylines exhibited excellently by the immediate past National Assembly’s. The “accord concordiale” built around Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal gave new positive impetus to the essence of the principle of legislative independence and oversight. From the initial subterranean strategizing for in-house leadership selection to the bold and focussed promotion of national interest over partisan allegiances, our democracy gained tremendous potency and credibility in the face of marauding manoeuvres of an over-bearing executive arm.A revisit and revitalization of the coalition of new breed northern and south western patriotic legislators that constituted a “shadow alliance” by strategizing across partisan and geo-political cleavages to upholdthe national interest is now Arewa’s best bet for a realistic reconciliatory rescue of the Arewa entitlement to second term in 2019. Wemust now put our best “digital” foot forward in regaining the confidence and support of the rest of Nigeria currently flabbergasted and overwhelmed by the “analogue” calamities ravaging the nation. Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal should step out and stand up for generational power shift in the North and revitalization of Arewa’s future prospects for national political leadership. Period!
