It is quite amazing, but this is what you get in a peaceful country, where there is effective law and order. New statistics on Norway’s low level of gun use has revealed that Police in Norway fired their guns only twice last year, and no one was hurt. Norwegian officers drew their weapons just 42 times in 2014, the lowest number of times in the last 12 years. Only two people were killed in police shootings in the same period. The majority of Norway’s police, like forces in Britain, Ireland and Iceland, patrol unarmed and carry guns only under special circumstances. Sadly, in the US, 547 people have been killed by police during the first six months of 2015 alone, 503 of them by gunshot. US police are always armed. I barely imagine what Nigeria’s statistics would be. What do you think? https://nautv./2015/07/10/amazing-police-in-norway-fired-only-2-bullets-last-year/ |

Now that the US has demonstrated its commitment to equality before the law, by ensuring same-sex couples can now marry in all 50 states of the confederate following its historic Supreme Court’s ruling which gave marriage equality as a constitutional right throughout the country one will wonder if this trend will find its way to Nigeria. In Nigeria, Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons are still facing legal and social challenges only peculiar to their community. Here, same-sex sexual activity is not only illegal, it is a punishable offence. According to the stipulations of Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act in Nigeria, offenders are to face 14 years’ imprisonment , and the punishment isdeath by stoning in the twelve northern states that have adopted Sharia law , which applies to all Muslims and to those who have voluntarily consented to application of the Sharia courts in the region. Nigeria has been criticized severely by civil rights organizations, as well as the United Nations, for failing to uphold, and violating, the rights of LGBT people but this has not changed the cultural disposition of its people to the topic. However, the golden question is, can you ever imagine same-sex becoming a way of life that Nigerians will one day come to terms with? Some Nigerians view on the topic..

ABUJA- STRONG indications have emerged that crisis looms in the family of Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP over the emergence of governor Olusegun Mimiko as Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, PDPGF, the umbrella body of the governors. Olusegun Mimiko emerged the Chairman of PDPGF last week and vowed to engage President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, APC in very constructive manner. Governor Mimiko was elected Chairman of the Forum at the meeting, which was slated for 7pm last week Tuesday night and did not start until about 9pm, but came to a close at 12am last week Wednesday morning. The Ondo State governor replaced former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio who was the first to occupy the position following the formation of the forum. It was gathered yesterday that some PDP members were already kicking against the choice of Mimiko as the the Chairman of the Forum and as a way of protest, have also written a petition to the National Working Committee, NWC of the party to as a matter of urgency wade into the looming problem before it blows into an uncontrollable situation. Six Governors and two Deputies who represented their governors were at the meeting, when he was elected, while governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State was conspicuously absent. According to a source at Wadata Plaza, National Secretariat of PDP, the NWC would hold a crucial meeting with all the governors today to brainstorm on these issues relating to how to move the party forward as well as the chairmanship of the Forum. The aggrived governors were said to have protested that the choice of Mimiko did not follow due process bearing in mind that Mimiko only defected to the party recently. Meanwhile, worried over the inability of PDP to convene a meeting of the National Executive Committee, NEC especially after the March 28 Presidential election, Governors elected on the platform of the party will meet today in Abuja to brainstorm on when the party should hold the meeting, just as the last meeting was before the general elections. Also as of the National Assembly resumes today, the PDP governors would at the meeting deliberate on those to emerge as Minority leaders in the Senate and House of Representatives. A source told Vanguard yesterday that the newly elected Chairman of PDP governors’ Forum and governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko who will preside, would look at how to come up with names that will not cause ripples especially at this trying moments for the PDP. It would be recalled that during the March 28 Presidential election where former President Goodluck Jonathan was the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and President Muhammadu Buhari was the candidate of the then opposition political party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, the PDP lost the election and suddenly became the new opposition political party in Nigeria. Besides the removal of former President Goodluck Jonathan from office in the election by Muhammadu Buhari, the first of its kind in Nigeria since 1999, the ruling PDP also suffered defeat at both the Senate and the House of Representatives which it hitherto controlled, thereby becoming the opposition party at both the red and green chambers. Following the defeat, the PDP will now produce the Minority and deputy minority leaders for both chambers in the national assembly. According to the source the PDP Governors will also brainstorm on the problems of the party, its present opposition status, the present National Working Committee, NWC which has Prince Uche Secondus as acting National Chairman. The Governors, Vanguard gathered will also have a postmortem on the party especially the election that culminated in the resignation of the former National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu and former Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, Chief Tony Anenih and the emergence of former Acting National Chairman, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed as acting BoT chairman It would be recalled that the PDP Governors’ Forum was formed to drum support for the re - election of former President Goodluck Jonathan following the crisis that broke out in the Nigerian Governors Forum,NGF which led to the emergence of former governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers and former governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State as two factions then. Former Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, a dire hard supporter of former President Jonathan was then picked as the pioneer Chairman of the Forum and since he was not returning,a new Chairman had to emerge. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/fresh-crisis-looms-in-pdp-over-mimiko-emergence-as-pdpgf-chairman/ |
We received an email this morning from someone who according to the information he provided, claimed to be a final year student of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri Imo state. However, the phone number, email and name of the sender have been excluded to protect his identity. However, the poor punctuations, spellings and gross grammatical errors that characterized the content of the mail above especially when juxtaposed with the fact that this is coming from a final year student; someone who will soon be a certified graduate is really worrisome and makes you wonder who is to be blamed - the student or his supposed teachers/lecturers or the country? Mind you, the reason we published this is not to condemn the sender or present him in a bad light. But to let others learn from it. A letter like this will out rightly get you disqualified for any job. Unless otherwise, the use of English language is not a criterion. http://myschool.com.ng/school/news/37487/see-what-a-final-year-student-sent-to-us-as-a-job-application-letter.html |

After three weeks of consultations with international and Nigeria’s political leaders, President Muhammadu Buhari appears set to effect major changes in the administration of the country in a bid to translate the ‘change’ mantra of his party into reality. To start with, the President is said to have accepted the recommendation of the transition committee he raised a few weeks ago to slash the number of ministries from the present 42 to 19 with a view to saving cost and making them more effective and responsive to the needs of Nigerians. In the same vein, many of the ministries have been merged to ensure proper coordination of duties and ensure greater efficiency and service delivery. A source close to the Presidency told Sunday Vanguard that the number of Federal Government departments and agencies had also been trimmed in line with the policy of the administration. Effectively, it means that no fewer than 50 of the MDAs that were not backed by relevant laws might be scrapped and their staff moved into relevant departments to save cost. The Presidency source hinted,”But the point being made is that relevant MDAs that will exist under the present administration must be those backed by laws. “What that means is that the era of doing things the wrong way to please certain persons in positions of power is over.” Shedding light on some of the ministries that had been merged, the official pointed out that the Ministry of Aviation and relevant agencies had been subsumed with Inland Waterways and associated agencies. Similarly, the Ministry of Agriculture has been merged with that of Water Resources under what the Presidency source described as the consolidation of larger ministries. It was learnt that under the administration of Buhari, only 19 ministers and 17 ministers of state would operate as opposed to the previous arrangement where there were at least 42. It was further gathered that some ministries would be run by senior ministers while others would be manned by junior ministers to save cost. On the fight against corruption, the source disclosed to Sunday Vanguard that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is to be merged with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, to tackle graft in a new way that would be prompt, fearless and decisive. Buhari, who travelled out of Abuja since returning from the African Union meeting in South Africa, late last week, is expected to join his wife, Aisha, at the Presidential Villa, for the first time after being sworn-in on May 29. The wife had moved into the Villa on Thursday ahead of the President to prepare the ground for his formal assumption of work at the seat of power. He has been operating from the Defence House in the last three weeks. A top source also said Buhari was expected to make some key appointments this week so as to get the machinery of his administration running. The delay in naming the critical staff of his office had forced some of his key loyalists to demand that he acts fast to deliver the change he promised Nigerians during the campaigns http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/buhari-to-merge-efcc-icpc-42-ministries-reduced-to-19/ |

The Real Madrid superstar has lent his nickname to a new discovery in the skies, believed to be the brightest object found in the early universe Real Madrid's 'galactico' era may have ended but their Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo continues to prove he is out of this world after a galaxy was named 'CR7'. The nickname is synonymous with the former Manchester United man, comprising his initials and the squad number he used at both Old Trafford and the Santiago Bernabeu. However, it now has astronomical connotations after the European Southern Observatory (ESO) named a new galaxy in the 30-year-old's honour, describing it as the brightest to be found in the early universe. "Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope have discovered by far the brightest galaxy yet found in the early Universe and found strong evidence that examples of the first generation of stars lurk within it," the group explained. "These massive, brilliant, and previously purely theoretical objects were the creators of the first heavy elements in history - the elements necessary to forge the stars around us today, the planets that orbit them, and life as we know it. "The newly found galaxy, labelled CR7, is three times brighter than the brightest distant galaxy known up to now." The CR7 epithet, in astronomical terms, stands for Cosmic Redshift 7 - a method of measuring a celestial body's place along the timescale of the universe. The discovery came after a new expansive study of the skies - aimed at discovering ancient stars known as Population III stars, which were formed very early after the Big Bang - and it is hoped CR7 will help scientists understand how early elements came into being. "Those stars were the ones that formed the first heavy atoms that ultimately allowed us to be here. It doesn’t really get any more exciting than this," said team leader David Sobral.. http://www.goal.com/en-ng/news/4099/spain/2015/06/18/12852922/ronaldo-is-out-of-this-world-astronomers-name-galaxy-cr7 |

ABUJA – DEPUTY Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Lasun Yussuf, yesterday said that there will be no amount of pressure that would make him resign his position as the Deputy Speaker. Fielding question from journalists in Abuja yesterday, on the alleged pressure on him to step down from his position by some All Progressives Congress, APC, Chieftains, following the controversy trailing the election of the presiding officers of the 8th assembly, Hon. Yussuf said his election followed due process, hence, there was no way he would ever contemplate to resign. Some of the APC Chieftains it was gathered had wanted him to step down for Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the choice of the party who had lost the Speakership seat to Hon. Dogara for the Deputy position. Describing the alleged pressure to resign as speculations, he said, “why will I resign, I went through an election.” He also explained that the speculation that the National Assembly takes a good chunk of the national budget, was unfounded, noting that out of the previous budgetary allocation of N150 billion, only N120 billion was budgeted in the 2015 appropriation. Besides, he said that from the budget, the aides of the Senators and House of Representatives members, technocrats and their staff as well as the staff of the National Assembly Commission are paid. He said, “when you talk about salary, it has to be tied to something. Let me tell you this, for the last three years with the exception of 2015, the budget of the national Assembly has been N150 billion and that is exactly 2.67 percent of the total budget of the federation. “So, I don’t know where people see this to say it is 25 percent of the budget of the National Assembly. The budget of the National Assembly is 2.6 percent of the entire budget of the country and so it is not overblown. “And people have forgotten too that there are 469 members of the National Assembly with each of the member with five aides that would be paid from the N150 billion. “We have the National Assembly technocrats and their staffers and the National Assembly commission – all of them earn their salaries and allowances from these N150 billion. “So, when people talk they always think that it is the House of Representatives members and senators that collect the N150 billion. And again don’t forget that for 2015 budget, the money has been reduced to N120 billion. “So, when you do the calculation, that is why the Dogara speakership in the last one week has repeatedly said, he is going to do a needs assessment, that he is going to engage development partners to actually sit down and see what it takes for the national Assembly to be run as an arm of government. “And you might be surprised that we have reasons for doing that because we can compare with other legislative bodies all over the world but it is not going to come from us, it is going to come from the body that would sit on the issue.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/469-nass-members-have-five-aides-each-deputy-speaker/ |
Former governor of Ebonyi State Martin Elechi, yesterday, spent many hours in the hands of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s interrogators to clear himself of allegations that he made away with millions of state funds during his eight-year tenure. As hard as he tried to prove his innocence of the myriad of financial impropriety levelled against him, the EFCC confronted him with more accusations forcing him to spend more than he expected with the investigators, who were armed with facts and figures about his administration. Although Elechi arrived the EFCC headquarters at 10 am he was still being quizzed is currently at the headquarters of the EFCC, where he is being grilled by a team of investigators, probing allegations of financial malpractices during his tenure as governor of the state. He was questioned over the theft of millions of naira in the asphalt contract for the 13 Local Government Secretariats and Headquarters. He was confronted with the fact that although his administration deducted money from the 13 LGAs, the asphalt plants have only been executed in six of the councils. Besides, he was questioned on why the contract was given to his son, Elechi Nnanna Elechi. The former governor was also taken to task over the huge sum earmarked for the centenary celebration. Towards the celebration, a supervisory committee under the Commissioner for Local Government, Nwali, deducted the sum of N1 million from each of the 13 LG areas for the purchase and production of T-Shirts for the celebration but there was no evidence of T-shirts produced for the celebration. Elechi was also asked to explain what he knew about issues arising from deductions from stabilization fund account of the state government for the financing of Labour party. A concerned indigene of the state had in a petition told the EFCC that the governor Martin Elechi awarded contract to his family company managed by his son Nnanna. Contracts from the state and local government running into millions of naira which remain un-executed a month after the governor vacated Government House, Abakalaiki. The anti-graft agency had previously invited and interrogated the permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Works to answer questions while the trio of Igbele, Accountant General; Timothy Ogbonnaya Odaa, Commissioner for Finance, and Honourable Celestine Nwali, Commissioner for Local government and Chieftaincy Matters, had also being quizzed by operatives of the EFCC. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/elechi-ex-ebonyi-gov-claims-innocence-on-money-laundering/ |

I am not big on football, as a matter of fact the hottest match of the century could be going on and i'll be laying down, sleeping and snoring louder than my Grandma. And if the match gets too loud and interrupts my snoring, I would get up and off that T.V and try to suppress the urge to break it. Lol Anyway I am not big on football but I know this man. I know Cristiano Ronaldo because his name is everywhere just like that of his biggest rival, Messi. However I find this man to be very very interesting due to some discoveries I made and some bar arguments. That is why I have chosen him to be my second discussed person in my Stories of Deceptive looks. Looking at that picture above, one of the first thing that come to people's mind is "Irresponsible Play boy with too much money". I mean he qualifies for all these right? Let's look at his features for a while and see. That funky haircut raises eyebrows and doesn't tell well on his responsibility status. The stud on his ear further damages that area of the statistics. He is a good looking man, no doubt about that. Very good build and height, good at what he does. That means he must get all the ladies he wants. As at 2009 his net worth was about $250 million. That means he can buy all those ladies all they want and keep them running in circles. He has a son out of wedlock. hmmm.... So let's sum all this up and say that he is a rich, handsome, arrogant, talented, play boy with no sense of responsibility thanks to his sense of fashion and general character. At least this is the way a couple people analyzed him for me when he was being compared to his rival one day at a bar. That day we were out in a bar and +Cristiano Ronaldo was playing in a match that was showing on T.V. As usual there were arguments. One of the men then said "This C.Ronaldo no sabi play anything jare, na just to dey carry women". I looked for trouble by inquiring to know more about what they meant. I explained how I wasn't a big fan of football but that even I knew he was very good. They then started talking and explaining how the fact that he was good looking was their reason for saying he was a playboy and his talent and 'send-less' attitude on the field helped them conclude he was arrogant. I almost believed what they were saying but the I remembered something that I had observed something on his birthday either last year or about last two years when it was posted on a blog. It was a little party he threw for himself and a few of his friends. In the party they had champagne on the table, they were dressed in suits and gowns (very modest gowns) and they simply sat and ate. I thought to myself and said, if this guy was so much of an irresponsible playboy. With the kind of money he rakes in every month, he could have hired a yacht, sailed off with a boat full of women in bikinis and had a crazy orgy right? I mean even if he was married he could easily cover it up or beg his wife, better yet his irresponsible side could come more alive and decide to not apologize and instead go marry again right? Or not marry at all and be free. I thought about his reason for having a quiet dinner and compared it to what those guys that were talking ill about him were saying. I was going to argue with them but then I looked down on there table and noticed that each was on his 5th bottle of his own beer brand, so I simply nodded sarcastically in agreement. Recently while surfing the net recently, I somehow stumbled upon a fact about him that got me wondering. The fact said that +Cristiano Ronaldo has no tattoos on his body. Do not get me wrong, I do not care if you have a tattoo or not, it doesn't mean nothing to me. It's what's in your heart that matters for all I care. Anyway I came across this fact and I said to myself "A guy with that kind of haircut? Why doesn't he have a tattoo?...Is he scared of needles? or is this fact wrong?" Little did I know that it was because of needles actually that he didn't have tattoos but for a different reason from what I thought. I went on to surf the web more and gain more knowledge on that fact and I came across one of his interviews. I first of all confirmed that yes, he had no tattoos. Then as I read through the interview, he was asked why he didn't have any tattoos and he revealed that he donates blood to the hospital regularly for the sick and getting any tattoos would render him incapable of doing that for a long period of time. You see this "Irresponsible Play boy" according to what a couple of people referred to him as, was able to put his personal interests aside and instead think of those that need him. It isn't compulsory for him to donate and even if he decides, he could get the tattoos and it will just be a couple of months before he gets back to doing the donation but he made a decision to leave that aside and concentrate on helping out the sick by giving a part of him. So with this do you still think that a haircut or a stud should be used to judge what a person has in their heart? Looks can be really deceptive so get to know a person first before concluding. If you don't have the opportunity to know the person then do not conclude at all. I don't know about you but +Cristiano Ronaldo has a huge heart to me. I don't know if he is arrogant on the field or in his personal life but I choose to judge by the good he is doing. He earned maximum respect from me ever since I read his interview. cc: lalasticlala

IBADAN—More indications emerged yesterday at the Federal High Court, Ibadan, where some bankers from the Central Bank of Nigeria and commercial banks are standing trial over alleged fraud running into billions of naira as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, told the court that the stolen money was more than the N8 billion being reported in the media. The anti-corruption commission represented by its counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) and other counsel gave this hint while proving the enormity of the offences committed and reason why the court should not grant the bail applications the accused tendered to the court. He said, “There are other boxes they poured acid on. That alone contained N3.9 billion. The money stolen is even more than N8 billion that the media is writing.” According to him, the commission, during one of its investigations, discovered that there were over 8,000 boxes that were yet to be opened by the CBN in its strong rooms and on opening 107 of the boxes for the First Bank that should contain N1.7 billion, only N256,000 was found in them. He further told the court how the accused were alleged to have made confessional statements that they actually committed the offence. At the sitting presided over by Justice Adeyinka Faaji, all the counsels to the accused submitted that the offence was a bailable and that the court reserved the discretion whether or not to grant the accused bail. The counsels who include Mr. Nathaniel Oke, Michael Lana, Olalekan Ojo and others fought spiritedly to convince the court why their clients should be granted bail. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/value-of-cbn-currency-fraud-more-than-n8bn-efcc/ |
