Abuja – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has urged the Golden Eaglets to create record for themselves and Nigeria by winning U-17 World Cup title for the fifth time. General-Secretary of NFF, Mohammed Sanusi, gave the charge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. Sanusi said that victory by the Eaglets in Sunday’s final of the tournament in Chile would also be a record for President Muhammadu Buhari. According to him, Buhari will make history by receiving the trophy as a civilian president, 30 years after he received it as a military head of state, when the Eaglets won the maiden edition of the tournament in 1985 in China. The young Nigerians on Thursday set up an all-African final with Mali after defeating Mexico 4-2 in one of the semi-final encounters. Sanusi said that the football house was optimistic that the Eaglets would do the country and the president proud. “By the grace of God, history will repeat itself. “President Buhari received the trophy from the Golden Eaglets when he was a military head of state in 1985. “Now that he is a civilian president, I hope that the team will give him the trophy again,’’ he said. The NFF scribe said that the Eaglets had everything going for them in the tournament, especially now that it would play an African opponent in the final. He allayed the fear being expressed by some Nigerians that Mali stood a better chance to win the trophy having won the 2015 Africa U-17 championship in Niger Republic, early in the year. He said, “Golden Eaglets are not afraid of opposition; the Eaglets have respect for every team but do not fear them because we know that football is about eleven players on each side. “However, you need to respect your opponent for you also to be respected but that does not mean that you will over respect them in the field of play. “I knew how good this team is after it participated in a four-nation tournament in Korea. “The team defeated Brazil and Argentina at that tournament; it was a morale booster for us and that was why the inferiority complex in some of our players disappeared. “There is no under-dog in football; if you think you can overrun an opponent easily, then, you might be in for a shocker”. Sanusi urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the team to enable it complete its assignment by winning the trophy. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/u-17-world-cup-nff-urges-eaglets-to-create-record-for-buhari/ |

Minna—National Examinations Council, NECO, has released the 2015 Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE, with candidates scoring 68.56 percent with five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics, which is an appreciable improvement over the past, especially last year’s result. A total number of 975,991 registered for the various examinations out of which 969,491 sat for the papers with 664,747 or 68.56 percent passing with five credits and above; in 2014, by comparison, 978,886 sat for the examinations with 511,931 or 52.29 percent passing with five credits and above. The new Registrar/Chief Executive of NECO, Professor Abdulrashid Garba, who announced the release at Council’s head Office, Minna Thursday, said the results were an improvement of 12 percent compared to that of last year. Centres de-recognized He remarked that though the NECO examinations were not completely devoid of malpractices in some centres and schools, where such cases were established, results of such schools or centres were either withheld or cancelled, while those apprehended will also be prosecuted to show the council’s zero tolerance for examination malpractices and add credibility to the examinations in future. Professor Garba stated that besides the cancellation, the centres and schools already established to be involved in the malpractices, had been de-recognized indefinitely, while some were suspended or totally de-recognized. Seven centres across the country have been discovered and sanctioned accordingly. He said already, some of the ad hoc staff linked to any form of malpractice or for other negligence had also been disengaged from the services of the council. On debtor states The Registrar, while answering questions on debtor states, said results of such schools were being withheld and would be released if commitments were shown by the affected schools. Garba said: “t is not only government schools that owe. I can tell you that only 13 schools, including private schools, owe us and already most of them are showing commitments to settle and we will release such results once we reach an agreement.” He attributed the considerable improvement in this year’s results to the commitment of various governments at all levels to the funding education and NECO’s curriculum, which he described as more “indigenous and homely. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/68-6-pass-neco-again-debtor-states-results-withheld/ |

LAGOS—Attempt by a middle-aged man to exchange an eight-year-old kidnapped boy with goods worth N51,000 in Surulere area of Lagos, has been foiled , following his arrest, Monday. The suspect, identified as Jonathan Cooker, reportedly kidnapped the primary school pupil (names withheld) who was returning from a summer coaching in a school located around Lawrence road. Thereafter, he reportedly took the boy to a provision store located on Cole Street and ordered for crates of soft drinks worth N51,000. Instead of paying, he was said to have told the shop owner that he would be leaving his younger brother (kidnapped boy) behind, to get money from the house. The unsuspecting shop owner obliged him and gave the crates of soft drinks to him. But the bubble burst after a passer-by who identified the little boy asked what he was doing in the shop. ABUJA — A total probe of the administration run by immediate past president, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is underway as the National Economic Council, NEC, Ad-hoc Committee on the Management of Excess Crude Account Proceeds and Accruals into the Federation Account, headed by the Governor of Edo State, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, is to hire two international forensic audit firms to probe revenue that accrued into the Federation Account and how it was spent under former Dr Goodluck Jonathan as President. Mr. Oshiomhole told journalists at the end of the first meeting of the committee in Abuja, yesterday that the auditors would cover the period January 1, 2010 to June 1, 2015. It put paid to calls by the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, that Buhari should extend his probe to the administrations of Jonathan’s predecessors, Alh. Umaru Yar’ Adua.and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. Already, some revenue generating agencies have been invited to brief the committee which will take detailed briefings from all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs of the Federal Government that deal directly with revenue. The focus will be on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Central bank of Nigeria, the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, among others. Other members of the committee included Gov. Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe, and Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom. He said that the committee did not want its actions to be bogged down by political interpretations and that the members were not professionals. Even if they were professionals, he said that their duties as governors would not allow them the time to do a thorough work. His words, “We held our first primary session today here with some of the revenue generating agencies that are supposed to remit funds to the federation account. We had a successful session with Customs, NPA, NEITI, SEC, FIRS, and quite a number of others and next week we will also hear from CBN, Ministry of Finance, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation. For the remaining ones, we agree we are going to meet on Thursday next week, NNPC, NPDC, DPR, NIMASA and other remaining agencies. We have started the work, with the idea to hear them out, what they have been doing, with particular emphasis on revenue accruing from these organizations and whether or not these have been remitted to the Federation Account for judicious distribution. His words: “We realised that this is a task and given our mandate, even if we were professional accountants because we are sitting governors, we would not have the time to do a forensic audit which this assignment entails. “Therefore, we have agreed in line with our mandate to appoint two reputable international audit firms to carry out a thorough forensic audit, not only of NNPC, which is more of excess crude, but other monies that accrued to the Federation Accounts. We have other revenues like bonuses, royalties, taxes, VAT that flow into the Federation Account. “We are taking a holistic review of the entire process, looking at all the agencies that make contribution of funds to the federation account. We are convinced that by appointing audit firms, we will allow professionals to carry out this exercise, so that it will be free of any political colouration and also we will ensure the outcome of the investigation will. “We have learned, we have listened and asked questions. I think we all have a clear picture of what is happening in those organizations before now. Some have information to supply and we have drawn attention to those areas, they are willing to oblige. We believe in the end, we will be able to not just establish what had happened over the period but much more important, going forward with the changes the President has promised the country. “It is not going to be business as usual. He started on a clean slate and everybody knows the new rules of the game and in particular as the laws apply to the various institutions are implemented in full. So I think we started very well. We are very confident that we are going to come out with something that is going to be of immense benefits to the Nigerian people”. On the rationale for embarking on another audit report with regards to the alleged missing funds, he said “Some reports were produced by PWC but in that report the PWC expressed their frustration and pointed to the fact that they were not able to access all the information they needed and that what they were able to produce was to the extent of information that was made available to them.” He added: “Audit can only be credible as much as information that was made available to auditors. The good news now is that with President Buhari, all the books will be open, no agency has any protection. Any agency that refuses to open the books then is ready to go on confrontation with the authority. “The forensic audit will act on the whole truth and nothing but the truth so that all stakeholders will have basis to formulate good policies and that Nigeria will never find itself in this circle where huge sums of money are allegedly diverted and unaccounted for. Audit has become a way of life for all public institutions.” On the duration of the audit exercise, Oshiomhole explained that the committee had looked at it professionally. “We are focusing on a five year circle. What we have agreed is that we are going to carry out an audit for five years from 1st January 2010 to 30th June 2015. “If the audit report reveals that we need to go backward, then we can do that. But for the first instance, this is the period that we consider good. “We can’t impose a time frame on them but will engage them and by Thursday we will be able to make it public. We need to listen to them and agreed with them on how much time will be okay for them. We are all in a hurry to ensure that the right thing is done. The emphasis is not on time but doing thorough job. “By next week we will meet with the big ones and we will then be able to tell you the audit firms that we have appointed. They are firms I am sure Nigerians will have confidence in. “At the end of the audit we will hear them out and reconcile them with what the laws says and arrive at a position. Given the volume of work and complicated nature of issues, we agreed we need professionals to carry out the audit. It is only the professionals that can handle it. It is not good to compromise”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/buhari-begins-total-probe-of-jonathans-govt/ |
LAGOS — An estimated N2.7 trillion ($13.6 billion) worth of direct investment is part of the immediate benefits accruing from President Muhammadu Buhari’s recent state visit to the United States, the Presidency claimed yesterday. The presidency also affirmed that the visit cost the Nigerian treasury less than N220 million contrary to assertions in some sections of the media. It further explained that President Buhari’s son, Yusuf, did not receive any estacode for the trip even as it contended that great savings were made by members of the delegation against previous visits. The five governors who were in the delegation, the presidency said, paid their way while permanent secretaries and other senior government officials only received their entitlements. The presidency’s explanations followed news reports in some sections of the media that the visit was wasteful, cost N2.2 billion and was not in anyway beneficial. In a statement, yesterday, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said besides the economic benefits, plans were already in motion to lift hindrances to the flow of military support for Nigeria’s war against insurgents in the North- East. Some immediate benefits According to him, “some of the more immediate benefits of the President’s trip to the US include: the proposed $2.1 billion fund from the World Bank for the re-development of the northeast battered by Boko Haram; $5 billion from US investors in Nigeria’s agriculture sector; $1.5 billion investment in the Nigerian’s health sector; and another $5 billion investment from the US in our country’s power sector. “Also, as things stand, the embargo on weapons sales to Nigeria is in the process of being removed. The trip to the US by President Buhari was definitely very successful and beneficial to Nigeria. Only those rabidly determined to find faults unnecessarily will cook up falsehood in a futile effort to rake up murk where none exists. “It is very sad that in this age of free-flowing information and in this era of change, a media organisation would make itself available as a vehicle to peddle a lie of such low and ignominious quality. “Contrary to the newspaper’s assertions, the total cost of the trip to the Nigerian taxpayer was at the most minimal, in line with the policy of this administration to cut waste and extravagance. Buhari’s son didn’t receive estacode, govs paid their way “In point of fact, the total amount expended on the trip by the office of the President amounted to nothing near 10 per cent of the speculated figure. “Owing to the free accommodation provided by the host government, all the personal staff who accompanied the President on the trip received reduced allowances. “His son, Yusuf, received neither allowances nor estacode. The five governors on the trip each paid their way. Permanent Secretaries who travelled on the delegation did so in accordance with extant rules and none of them exceeded their estacode entitlements. “Apart from the Nigerian pilot’s mischievous mathematics, it is shortsighted and misleading of the newspaper to have claimed that President Buhari’s trip to the US achieved nothing. “Nigerian-US relations had suffered severely over the past few years. That relationship has now been reset. The benefits of this symbiotic relationship will become more and more evident as the Buhari administration continues to tackle the challenges of corruption, security and the economy.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/buhari-brought-n2-7trn-investments-from-us-visit-presidency/ |

click like for FAAN ...share for patience |
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Tuesday said that it never denied Dame Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, access to the VIP’s lounge at the Port Harcourt International Airport. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FAAN’s denial is contained in a statement issued by Mr Yakubu Dati, its General Manager, Corporate Affairs. The statement said the news report of the incident which allegedly occurred on July 27 in the social media was misleading and mischievous. “We wish to state that no such thing happened as Dame Patience Jonathan, like other family members of former Presidents and other designated principal officers of Government, are officially entitled to the use of airports’ VIP and protocol lounges under the management of FAAN. “The Authority holds the former First Lady in high esteem, being the wife of our former President and, therefore, could not have done anything that would suggest disrespect for her person,” it said. According to the statement, the former first lady’s convoy was only denied access to the foot of the aircraft during boarding formalities at the airport in line with international aviation best practices. It said this was strictly for safety reasons as prescribed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The statement said: “Our security officials explained this fact in detail to the former first lady. “We wish to recall that former President Goodluck Jonathan in his recent trips from the same airport, had to walk to the aircraft from the protocol lounge, in recognition of this ICAO regulation.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/we-never-denied-patience-jonathan-access-to-vips-lounge-at-airport-faan-says/

"Father forgive them, for they know not what they are saying for now”. This was the response from the JAMB boss Professor Dibu Ojerinde while reacting to the recent uproar over the list of eligible candidates sent to institutions. According To him, the reason behind this new admission policy is to help candidates not only get admission but get it on time. Below are excerpts of the exact words of the JAMB Boss; The big universities are overloaded. Can you imagine 8,000 students seeking for admission to study law in a university that will take only 250 candidates for law! The remaining 7750 candidates will wait endlessly and hopelessly till the end of the admission. Or imagine 7500 candidates seeking for medicine in a university. Of these 7500 candidates, 2000 scored above 250 in the UTME. The university has a carrying capacity of only 150 candidates for medicine. The remaining 7350 who scored above 200 will be wasted. Particularly, 1750 candidates who scored above 250 will be wasted while other universities either do not have enough candidates or high scoring candidates. Courses like Biological Sciences, Agric Engineering and related courses are lacking in candidacy! We are saying, let's give them a feel of chance somewhere else that has not gotten enough candidates by sending the names of these HIGH scorers to "needy" universities. The names of such surplus candidates are being distributed to first Federal institutions, then State and finally Private institutions in that order depending on: • Availability of space in other universities, • Choice of the course of the candidate, • The geographical Zone of the choice of the candidate, and • Performance of the candidate. By this approach, wastage of HIGH scores will be reduced, the fate of the candidates will be determined on time and yet the interest of their areas of study may be satisfied. addition, the concept of selection by • Merit, • Catchment Area, and • Educationally Less Developed States Will be adequately catered for. However, I am not saying that everyone will get admission or even get their original choice of course of study. But it is better than wasting the time, finances, and good scores of these candidates. We need to fill the available spaces as given to us by the regulatory bodies like NUC, NBTE, and NCCE. If, however, a candidate does not want the given opportunity, it is too "baaaad". This scenario was made clear to the institutions during the Policy meeting that took place on 14th July this year in Abuja. Before the Policy meeting, we had discussions with the representatives of the Federal, State, and Private universities where the degree of the problems of candidates were presented and solutions were proffered. These decisions were backed up by copious statistics of applications to various universities. Again “Father forgive them, for they know not what they are saying" I believe that some so- called educational consultants have some hidden agenda which are being thwarted by our proactive steps. Let them know that this is a period of CHANGE. If they do not CHANGE they will be CHANGED. http://myschool.com.ng/school/news/38479/father-forgive-them-for-they-know-not-what-they-are-saying-jamb-boss-ojerinde.html |
Tragedy occurred on Sallah day in Bauchi when a policeman on special duty knocked his head against a barrier meant to restrict heavy trucks from plying a road, and died. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the policeman, Corporal Solomon Paul, attached to Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, Bauchi Police Command, became unconscious and later died at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBU-TH) Bauchi. Confirming the incident, Bauchi State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Haruna Mohammed, described it as “tragic”. “ On the 17/7/2015 at about 09:00hrs, The Bauchi State Police Command lost one F/N 499348 PC Solomon Paul, attached to Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, Bauchi. “The incident occurred when the victim brought his head out of the roof of a moving patrol vehicle while on special duty. “As a result, he hit the overhead barrier meant to restrict heavy trucks from plying the road, and became unconscious. “He was rushed to ATBU Teaching Hospital, Bauchi , for treatment but was later certified dead by a medical doctor while on admission,” he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/policeman-in-a-moving-patrol-vehicle-knocks-head-against-highwaybarrier-dies/ |
Jamb has officially announced that the 2015 official cut-off mark is 180 for Universities and 150 for polytechnics, Colleges of Education and other certificate awarding institutions. However, from comments and feedback we have been receiving, it seems that most candidates have not clearly understood the import of this. So we deem it necessary to explain what it actually means. Many candidates for instance are of the opinion that since they have applied to study in a university and have scored up to 180 that their choice institution must consider them for admission going by the fact that the official cut- off mark for universities is 180. You should know by now that most Federal Universities accept only candidates who scored 200 and above and nothing less and even when such universities adopts the official cut-off mark of 180 some courses will demand that you still score 200 and above to be considered for admission. Similar permutation applies to polytechnics and colleges of education with official cut-off mark of 150. You may ask, "What is then the essence of the cut-off mark if institutions won't stick to it?" I will explain. The 180 official cut-off mark for universities only means that no university is permitted to accept any candidate with UTME score below 180. For polytechnics, Colleges of Education and other certificate awarding institutions that have official cut-off mark of 150, it means that non- of these institutions will accept a candidates that have anything less that 150 as UTME score. So where as institutions cannot go below their official cut-off marks, they can go above the cut-off marks. Now, I guess you understand. http://myschool.com.ng/school/news/38118/what-the-jamb-official-cut-off-mark-actually-means.html |
