Kaduna—Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El- Rufa’i, has begged members of the House of Assembly to review their salaries and allowances downward in order to generate more revenue for the development of the state. “The Deputy Governor and I have signalled our intention in this regard by announcing that we are taking a pay cut of 50 per cent of our salary and allowances until the fiscal situation of the state improves,” El-Rufa’i said, yesterday, when he paid a visit to the House of Assembly. “We appeal to all political office holders to embrace this example and attitude of sacrifice,” h said, adding that after paying salaries of civil servants, government was left with only 20 per cent of its revenue. According to him, “Once done with paying salaries, allowances, overheads and pensions, the state is unable to do much by way of building infrastructure or providing services. The stark fact is that Kaduna State spends 80 per cent of its total revenues on its public servants and political office holders. “Can we as elected leaders deliver any significant service or implement progressive actions or attain desirable outcomes for the majority of our people if we devote only 20 per cent of available resources to their needs? Would we not be undermining the very rationale of democracy if, after being elected by majority vote, we uphold a system that solely serves the pleasures of a servant-minority? “How many good roads or decent hospitals can we build and maintain when we leave so little monies for the things that actually matter? The elections that have thrust the responsibility of governance on us reflect the yearning of our people for leaders that are competent, responsive and willing to offer dedicated service. “As elected officials, we must view our massive mandates as instructions by our people for unrelenting work on their behalf. The change they voted for is for substantive improvements in the delivery of public goods, a new way of doing things and the prioritisation of their needs. “As you are aware, the executive branch of this government has been taking briefings from the ministries, departments and agencies that constitute the public service of Kaduna State,” he added. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/el-rufai-begs-kaduna-lawmakers-to-cut-salaries-allowances/ |

Have you witnessed an event and wondered where you have seen exactly the same sequence of activities before? The French call it déjà vu, which translates to “already seen”. That is the phenomenon we are observing our brand new President Muhammadu Buhari, PMB, taking us through. In 1998/99 Nigeria’s ruling principalities and powers who had clamped General Olusegun Obasanjo in jail for coup decided to release him, pardon him, restore his military ranks and sponsor him to be our elected president as their compensation to the Yorubas for their kinsman, Chief Moshood Abiola, whom they had poisoned to death for winning a presidential election. Once Obasanjo came out of Yola prisons he hit the international circuit. As president, he kept travelling repeatedly to Western capitals in a wasteful chase after “debt forgiveness”. This went on for most of his first term in office, when he left the economy in the hands of his Vice President, Abubakar Atiku. The situation was so bad that by October 2000, barely 17 months after Obasanjo was sworn into power, the late social crusader, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, listed at least 45 foreign travels he had undertaken, which averaged more than one per fortnight. OBJ did not get the debt relief until he finally did the right thing by employing Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who used her connections to negotiate the $12 billion deal that exited us from 20 years of slaving for the Paris Club of money lenders. Definitely, Buhari is a far more disciplined leader than Obasanjo. He is unlikely to try to equal OBJ’s unenviable national record. But it has to be noted that PMB is starting his second coming like Obasanjo, knocking on the doors of foreign countries in his belief that his key to success lies behind those doors. Before he was sworn-in, he told us how his “foreign partners” helped in providing the technology that ensured Professor Attahiru Jega’s “free and fair” elections in 2015. He said they were moved to provide the assistance when he painted a bloody picture of uncontrollable refugee problems that would envelope Africa if the 2015 elections were rigged. A week before he took his oath as president, he had jetted out to London to “take a rest” and consult with David Cameron, the British Premier; a trip that caused a stir in the social media when Buhari’s lonely figure outside No. 10 Downing Street, waiting to be welcomed by his host, caused a stampede over the Internet. Cameron did receive him, nonetheless, and later told him to come with his “shopping list” to the next economic forum that will hold in Europe shortly. Not done yet, Buhari, now in the presidential saddle, travelled to Niger Republic where he received more than a red carpet welcome. The impoverished country’s president, Mamadou Issoufou, gave him a beautiful parting gift of a regally-decked out thoroughbred white charger, possibly a mustang. If you remember that former President Goodluck Jonathan also got given a similar gift when he visited the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Faruk Umar Faruk, just before the presidential election, it will be obvious that white horse gifts are customary for presidents and highly placed visitors in that geo-cultural clime. Let me remind you that Daura, which was founded by Tuaregs some centuries ago, is regarded as the spiritual home of the Hausa people. The Emirate extends from our own Katsina State to Zinder in Niger Republic. Therefore, for Buhari, the trip to Niger Republic was like a ride from one end of one’s hometown to another. And since Niger, Chad and Cameroun are also neck-deep in the war against the Boko Haram terrorists, I am not one of those criticising Buhari for visiting them to exact stronger commitments towards his agenda for ending the bloody nonsense. I only note, however, that the chicken has come home to roost. Buhari’s wife, Aisha, can now apologise to ex-President Jonathan whom she asked to resign last year when he visited these countries before he commenced the six-week campaign to end the nonsense. Buhari himself should equally apologise to Jonathan because even he has now seen the need to accept the US offer to “assist” to terminate the nonsense. He had, only a month ago, said it was a “shameful” when stories made the round that some South African experts or, if you like, “mercenaries”, were involved in the campaign. Talk can be very cheap, but that is politics for you. Buhari’s foreign trips have drawn criticisms from several quarters. These included prominent opposition party leaders such as Chief Olu Falae, Alhaji Balarabe Musa and several civil society groups. They called on Buhari to pay more attention to mobilising support at home, rather than starting charity from abroad. This was exactly what people were saying to Obasanjo 16 years ago, but he refused to listen and went to squander billions of Naira on foreign junkets. Buhari ought to know that with Nigerians fully behind him he can move mountains. He still has massive goodwill on his side. He should cash in on it and get the Nigerian people, irrespective of how they voted during the elections, behind him. The foreigners will queue up once they notice that. We are quite capable of solving our problems once we are united. What we did to Ebola under Jonathan was the stuff of what a determined, united Nigeria can do. But we do need our neighbours to overcome Boko Haram. If we chase them out of Nigeria into Cameroun, Chad and Niger, we have hardly achieved anything. We have simply given them a wider territory. Even if the Niger and Chad presidents do not understand English, they certainly will discuss in Hausa or Fulfulde and as Muslims, use it to tell themselves the kind of truth only kinsmen and people of the same faith can share. But he has to be very wary of the West, especially America and Britain. Let Buhari beware; they are experts at offering Greek gifts. When Britain asks you to bring your “shopping list” and America offers “assistance”, we must know what they want in return. America is not even our crude oil customers anymore. They have become even more irrelevant than ever. They may try to bog down our war on Boko Haram with their harangue of “human rights” blackmail, which Amnesty International has already started brandishing against our serving and former field commanders without concrete proof. Or, worse still, they may re-table their much-coveted demand for the repeal of our collectively-agreed decision to criminalise gay relationships and ban gay marriage in Nigeria. Former President Jonathan remained their darling until he appended his signature to the anti-gay marriage Bill passed by our patriotic National Assembly. The West wants to destroy Nigeria, a rising star in Africa with these policies. They want to use “human rights” to create confusion among us to enable Boko Haram eat into our fabric. Any time we dent the terrorists, either Steven Davis will pop up or Amnesty International will pop in to join pro-Boko Haram Northern interests to accuse our military officers of “human rights” abuses. Meanwhile, they keep mute when Boko Haram seize our towns and plant their evil flags. The solutions to our problems lie mainly with us here at home. Buhari, beware of the morally degraded West, especially the UK and the USA! If you reject their Greek gifts they will leave you in the lurch. Look further afield for true foreign friends like Russia and China. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/buhari-beware-of-the-west/ |
President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will make their assets declaration public after same would have be verified by the Code of Conduct Bureau. Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement, yesterday. There has been outcry over Buhari’s decision to not make his assets declaration public as he promised during his campaign tour. The Code of Conduct Bureau had claimed that it lacked the constitutional powers to make the assets declaration public. But in a statement in Abuja, yesterday, Garba said: “In fulfilment of one of their campaign promises, his declared assets and those of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will be released to the public upon the completion of their verification by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB). “It is hoped that this process will be completed before the expiry of the 100-day deadline within which they said they would do this”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/buhari-osinbajo-to-make-assets-declaration-public/ |
After long hours of voting, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila won the mandate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) members-elect to be the next Speaker. Gbajabiamila defeated Hon. Yakubu Dogara, who staged a walk-out with 18 members-elect. According to the National Secretary of APC, Mallam Mai Mala Buni, said out of the 209 APC members-elect, 183 signed the attendance register, while 161 others voted at the straw poll, with about 22 others either abstaining or staging a walk-out. Out of the 161 votes, Gbajabiamila garnered 154 votes, Dogara got 3 and 4 votes were invalid. Meanwhile, Tahir Monguno scored 153 votes to emerge the sole candidate of the party for the position of Deputy Speaker. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/gbajabiamila-wins-apc-primaries-as-monguno-emerges-deputy/ |
President Muham-madu Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade appears to have taken off in earnest barely a week after assuming office with a stern warning to ministers not to dabble into approving payments for contractors. The government came boldly yesterday with a clear policy directive asking only the heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs not to abdicate their core functions to ministers who are political appointees but to do their jobs in strict compliance with the policy guidelines of the administration The Head of Service of Civil Service of the Federation, Mr Danladi Kifasi, made the new position of the government known at a media briefing in Abuja. According to the Head of Service of the Federation, the government wants to keep the political class away from issues of finance so that development of our country can be sustained. He said: “If a minister travels out and payment is due, we cannot afford to wait for the ministers to come back before we pay.” Findings by Saturday Vanguard revealed that the HoSF was compelled to make the clarifications following a clash between permanent secretaries of major Federal Government ministries and former ministers in the Jonathan government over the payment of contractors. Saturday Vanguard learnt that most permanent secretaries and directors of accounts in the ministries and MDAs fell out with many of the immediate past ministers following their refusal to pay contractors favoured by them for jobs approved and awarded through the backdoor by the ministers in their last effort to make quick money out of the system. The clash between a former minister and a serving permanent secretary is said to have degenerated into a near major scandal in one of the major Federal Government ministries in Abuja which deals with land and development of infrastructure. The minister was reported to have hurriedly approved the award of many contracts for companies said to be close to him and later ordered the permanent secretary to pay the affected contractors, an order, which the civil servant bluntly turned down, thereby entering into the bad books of the former minister. To reverse the trend as the Buhari government takes off, the HoSF, warned that henceforth, no permanent secretary should allow themselves to be misdirected by any minister in the award and payment for contracts. Kifasi who cleared what he described as a misconception of political appointees to approve payment for contracts, made it clear that approval of payments for contracts are strictly the jurisdiction of accounting officers or directors of the various ministries. The Head of Service, who was apparently in support of the refusal of permanent secretaries to pay contractors approved for payment by out-gone ministers, explained that both the Procurement Act and extant government circulars clearly define the roles of the civil servants relating to contract awards and payment. Kifasi said, “The President has said that his administration will concentrate on policy issues and so we civil servants are re-directing our efforts and minds towards achieving or aligning with the president’s directive. “Payments are normally approved by the accounting officers. In a parastatal, it is either the managing director or the director-general. In the ministry it is the permanent secretary and not the minster. “In the procurement process, ministers do not approve either. It is the Ministerial Tenders Board that sits to consider and approve contracts within their approval threshold. If it is beyond the Board, it goes to the Federal Executive Council. “The only thing a minister does is that he signs the council memo for the procurement that goes to the Federal Executive Council. For the Ministerial Tenders Board which is usually chaired by the Permanent Secretary; the Permanent Secretary sends his report and the minutes of the tenders board to the minister for his concurrence and endorsement. That is their role “For instance, if ministers were asked to be approving payments, now that there are no ministers will work then stop? So it is actually a misinformation.” Beyond finance, the HoSF warned civil servants that the warning by President Buhari for them to change their attitude to work should be taken seriously as lateness to work and other acts inimical to the service would not be tolerated any longer. “Consequently, permanent secretaries, Directors, Chief executives of parastatals and agencies are to take appropriate steps to address this situation. All public servants are to note that measures as enshrined in the Public Service Rules will be enforced on erring officers,” Kifasi warned. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/buharis-anti-corruption-war-takes-off/ |

The National President, of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Issa Fagge Nasir has stated that the 16 universities and other higher institutions established by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, lack the necessary legal backing and so may be living on borrowed time. He said this while commenting on the four Colleges of Education upgraded to Universities by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). In his words, “Our quarrel with the government is that universities are not just established by executive fiats like this administration is doing. So the Federal Government is only compounding the problems already bedeviling the education sector and I wonder if the incoming administration will allow this to stand. “Strictly speaking, the Federal Government is not respecting its own laws, and I wonder how you just transmute an institution without looking at its laws. What happens to its staff, facilities and infrastructure?” He further stated that the 500M Naira released by the Goodluck led administration as take-off grant to the universities is not even enough to fund training of staff not to talk of infrastructural Upgrade. He finally called on the incoming administration to critically assess these decisions and make impartial judgment that will benefit the mass of the people and return the country’s education sector’s lost glory. http://newtelegraphonline.com/all-varsities-established-by-jonathan-are-illegal-says-ASUU/ cc: lalasticlala |

When former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan called President Muhammadu Buhari after the 2015 presidential election to concede defeat, many applauded him as a gentleman who has the interest of the country at heart. Many went as far as calling him the hero of our time. So were his many friends in the entertainment industry. But it seems singer and actress, Adokiye would remember the leader for a different reason. “ I feel really bad for the Nigerians calling President Jonathan a hero. Hero to who please?” she asked disdainfully. “ Why waste your saliva and brain on someone who has brought poverty, national blackout, danger, unemployment, terror and insecurity to our dear nation” she said. “Don’t get me wrong, he was my president before now. His wife is even from my mum’s village, Ogu Bolo in Okrika and I know her home. So, they are my people. But my dear, he disappointed me. Someone that has seen poverty before but was blessed by God to change mankind. What did he do? He forgot us and started forming ‘big man’ for Nigerians. I bet he thought the world was his. Thank God for his mercy for not allowing him to come back to complete his mission of doom” she declared. She also took on those who worked under the former president in he chat with Showtime, saying they did not work in the interest of the masses. “They were all heartless people. People that could not feel the pains of the poor who put them there to serve then. If anybody by now is still calling Jonathan a hero that person should be checked” she added. Adokiye spoke with Showtime on Monday at the height of the fuel crisis across the nation. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/stop-calling-jonathan-a-hero-says-adokiye/ |
Senator-elect, Ogun-East, Prince Buruji Kashamu, was said to have threatened to kill himself if officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) forced their way into his house, yesterday, claiming there was a court injunction against the NDLEA’s action. Some of his friends who claimed to have contacted him on phone between 7 and 9 am told Sunday Vanguard that Kashamu said he would remain indoors till Monday. But the narcotic agency explained that the operatives mandate was to put the politician, who is also the Chairman, Organisation and Mobilisation Committee of the PDP in the South- West, under house arrest pending when he would appear in court on Monday. The NDLEA spokesman, Mitchel Ofoyeju , in a six paragraph statement, yesterday, said: “A special team of NDLEA has confined Ogun State senator-elect, Buruji Kashamu, to his Lagos residence pending his appearance in court on Monday, May 25, 2015 to perfect his extradition to the United States. “The agency has commenced extradition procedures against Senator-elect Buruji Kashamu in line with the laws of country. He has been in contact with his attorneys and will appear in court on Monday. “The residence of Buruji was raided by narcotic operatives at about 5am today. Further information will be communicated to the media”. But Kashamu’s media aide, Mr Austine Oniypkor, described the siege on his principal’s house as illegal, dismissing the claim that the NDLEA had arrest warrant to that effect. In a statement, Oniyokor said: “ Yes, at about 4:30am, some men, who claimed to be from the NDLEA, surrounded the Lekki Phase 1, Lagos residence of Prince Buruji Kashamu to allegedly effect his arrest following a purported extradition request from the US. “This latest onslaught is a confirmation of the alleged plot to illegally abduct him in spite of the pending suit against this illegality. As a matter of fact, the court has ordered parties in the matter, including the NDLEA, to maintain the status quo until judgment is delivered on Wednesday, 27th May, 2015. “We have confirmed that they do not have a warrant of arrest, just as the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice has said that it did not give any order to carry out this illegality. We have confirmed that this illegality is being designed and executed by Chief Bode George whose wife is the Director General of the NDLEA, all in a bid to score cheap political points. “We urge all well meaning Nigerians to prevail on NDLEA, Chief George and his wife to toe the path of the rule of law and follow due process. Nigeria is not a Banana republic! The United States (US), being the bastion of democracy, the rule of law and due process should not lend itself to this kind of illegality”. Kashamu had, of late, alleged a plot to abduct and extradict to the US to answer drug related charges, citing information leaked to his lawyer by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) close to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke. His travails began shortly after he fell apart with former President Olusegun Obasanjo over the control of the leadership of the PDP in Ogun State. Buruji had been in Obasanjo’s faction of the PDP against the then Ogun State governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, in 2008 . After the emergence of President Goodluck Jonathan via the 2011 elections, he was appointed the Chairman of Organisation and Mobilisation Committee for Jonathan’s re- election in the South-West. In his famous resignation letter from the PDP, Obasanjo said that as the Chairman of an anti- drug body in West Africa, he could not continue to be in a party where a wanted drug baron was the leader in his home state, in what many interpreted as veiled reference to Kashamu. In late 2014, the former president had launched a book, ‘My Watch’, in which he described Kashamu as a fugitive. The senator-elect went to court – the same way he had gone to court on several occasions-until he secured the control of PDP in Ogun State, obtaining an injunction restraining Obasanjo from selling the book. The order has since been vacated. Kashamu emerged as PDP senatorial candidate for Ogun East and was returned elected at the general elections. Since his victory at the poll, the high profile politician has taken pre-emptive steps to forestall any attempt to ‘abduct’ him for extradition to the US. On May 9, he sued the Inspector General of Police, IGP and nine other individuals for allegedly plotting his abduction. In the suit filed at the Federal High Court, Lagos, the NDLEA Chairman; EFCC Chairman; Director General of the DSS; the Attorney General of the Federation were joined as co-respondents. In an order made on April 17, the court directed an interim stay of all actions arising from the applicant’s claims to extradition. The court ordered as follows: “In line with the provisions of the order (iv) rule 4 (c)(iv) of the Fundamental Rights’(Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009, the Respondents herein shall in the interim stay all actions arising from the Applicant’s claims capable of intringing on his fundamental rights to personal liberty, freedom of movement and association pending the hearing and determination of the Applicant’s substantive application dated 14/4/2015. (2)That the Court’s decision on the prayers 2 to 7 endorsed on the Applicant’s exparte application is hereby adjourned to abide the outcome of the substantive motion on notice dated 14/4/2015. (3)Prayer 1 endorsed on the Applicant’s exparte application dated 14/4/2015 deserves to succeed and it is accordingly grant as prayed. That the Applicant shall serve the originating processes and all other Court’s processes meant for service in this suit on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th to 12th Respondents at Abuja, Federal Capital Territory Abuja outside the jurisdiction of this Court. (4)That the matter is hereby adjourned to the 4th May 2015 for hearing of the motion on notice 14/4/2015. Issued at Lagos, under the Seal of the Court and the Hand of the presiding Judge this 17th day of April, 2015″. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/i-am-ready-to-die-than-be-extradicted-to-the-us-kashamu/ |

ABUJA – AS the Minister of Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, engage in war of words over the alleged unaccounted $20 billion accrued to the Excess Crude Account, ECA, while the NGF was in crisis, Senator Olusola Adeyeye has said that many Nigerians will go to jail after May 29, when the new administration would have taken over power. Meantime, Senator Adeyeye has ruled out the possibility of the serving Senate President, Senator David Mark emerging as the President of the Senate in the 8th senate when the All Progressives Congress, APC, has the majority of Senators with 60 Senators against the 49 of the PDP. Speaking to Vanguard in Abuja yesterday, Senator Adeyeye, APC, Osun Central said that Nigerians are being giving different figures by those who manage the economy and that even the alleged unremitted $20 billion by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, will be accounted for after May 29. He said, “To me and to most observant Nigerians, what we have heard over the years is an endless renditions of ‘abracadabra’ when it comes to the management of the limited resources of Nigeria. It is the case of, ’the more you look, the less you see. “When you ask different people who ought to know about the magnitude of the revenue that had accrued to the federation, always, you get conflicting figures. The figures from the Minister of Finance are never the same as those of the Accountant – General of the Federation; they are never the same as those of the Central Bank of Nigeria. “They are never the same as those of the Budget management office; they are never the same as those of the Nigerian National petroleum corporation. So, you keep hearing figures and you don’t know who to believe but I have good news, by the grace of God, on the 29th of May, a new government would be inaugurated in Nigeria. “Nigerians overwhelmingly expect that new government to diligently, look at the books not with an eye to persecute anyone but to ensure that the resources of Nigeria are properly accounted for. I am confident that it will not be long before we begin to unravel this knotty issue of the revenues of Nigeria. “The action that the new government should take on the controversial money should be exactly those which are already prescribed by the laws of the land. The constitution does not give room for retroactive legislation. “There are good laws in Nigeria; there are laws against murder, kidnapping, and embezzlement. If funds have been embezzled, I pray to God that the law will take its proper course and people would be brought to book. That, there should be no sacred cow anywhere.” Reacting to the comment by the former acting National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, that the party was not going to zone positions of National Assembly presiding officers, he said that the former APC boss may have spoken the minds of the party’s leaders. Adeyeye said, “Chief Bisi Akande is a former Acting Chairman of our great party. He is a member of the Board of Trustees and a revered elder of our party. Whatever he said is correct and I believe because Akande is not a man who speaks frivolously, I believe that he is speaking the minds of the leadership of the APC. “If our party says offices will not be zoned, so be it, it means those who are interested will throw their hats into the field. Even when there is no zoning, people are going to be sensitive to be ethnocentric dimension of Nigerian politics and the geopolitical configuration of our land. “I don’t expect for example, that somebody from the North West would vie for the position of the Senate President when someone from the zone is already the President. I pray that a day will come when there will be that level of trust in each other and we won’t have to worry about the part of the country that a political office holder comes from. “The rules of the National Assembly allows for a member of any political party to emerge into the office of the two top posts in the National Assembly. All other posts are assigned to the majority and the minority caucus. If the majority party conducts itself in such a way that a member of the minority party emerges as either the top or second positions in any of the chambers, so be it.” Also commenting on the issue of ranking in the consideration of Senate leadership, the Osun State born Professor turn politician said, “Honesty, I don’t believe in strict ranking which says if you are the oldest member, then you must be this, there must be other factors, you must look at the temperament of these persons who are ranked. “You must look at the intellectual withal of these persons, you must look at the antecedents of these persons, you must look at the ability of these persons to build consensus and to transcend primordial interest. “That said, again my prayer is that a day will come when our first question will be, who is the best person who can occupy this position. When Rick Sanctorum became the Whip of the US Senate, he was not what we call a ranking member of the Senate, he had spent two terms of three years each in the House of Representatives, he contested election to become senator and he won. “Because people knew his ideological thrust, they felt he was best suited to maintain party position and cohesiveness in their caucus, hence, they elected him, as their whip. He was a first timer. If the senate presidency is solely based on ranking, someone like Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia or Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts would have become the senate president because they are the most senior in the US senate.” Senator Adeyeye further explained that there was nothing wrong in the APC trying to be involved in who become the principal officers of the National Assembly, even though, he reasoned that it had to be done in consultations with serving party members. According to him, “Politics is not a one man game, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria currently does not allow for independent candidature. Everybody who got elected into the National Assembly was elected on the platform of a party. “That party therefore cannot said to be a miss when it shows interest on those who were running its affairs within the chambers of the National Assembly what we are hoping will happen is that our leaders who are outside would consult with us, will respect our wishes but in the end, none of them would vote, it’s the members who would vote. “Let no member blame any leader for whatever became the outcome of the election but we can’t blame them for showing interest.” On the possibility of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which will be the opposition party in the 8thassembly, emerging as the Senate President, he said, “I have also heard that Senate President, David Mark, has also shown interest and that with 49 senators in his camp, he would only need six senators from the majority camp. “David Mark is a very skillful politician. Grant that for him. Whether you like his politics or not, please concede to David Mark the fact that he is a skillful man. But having been in oppositions for 16 years, there is no way we will allow him to become senate president “He may be allowed to play a major role in the National politics. By virtue of the experience that he had garnered in the last many years, he is preeminently qualified to continue to play leading roles in the affairs of this republic. “I pray he would be a matured leading voice of the opposition but I’m confident that a member of my party will emerge as the next Senate President.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/20bn-excess-crude-account-manyll-go-to-jail-after-may-29-sen-adeyeye/ |

The Minister was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters at Yale’s 2015 Commencement Ceremony in New Haven, Connecticut Monday. She is the second Nigerian in the university’s 314-year history to receive its highest honour after Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka who received an honorary Doctor of Letters in 1980. Giving out the award, the President of the University Professor Peter Salovey described Okonjo-Iweala as “a brilliant reformer and dedicated public servant.” He said that Minister “has spearheaded efforts to stabilize and grow Nigeria’s economy, battling widespread government corruption and creating greater fiscal transparency and discipline.” Yale’s honorary doctorate degree is seen globally as a very important honour. According to the institution “those who have received honorary degree are scholars, public servants, Nobel Prize winners and heads of states. “Collectively, they represent the aspirations of this institution. Yale honorary degree recipients serve as models of excellence and service to our students, to our graduates, to our community and to the world,” the institution says. lagos—THE crisis rocking the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday deepened as the PDP Youth Leaders’ Forum removed its leader, Mr Jide Ladehinde. He was replaced with the Mainland local government youth leader, Mr Malomo Adelabi. A dissident group within the Lagos State PDP had last week removed the state chairman of the PDP, Capt Tunji Shelle (retd). The PDP youths, however, pledged their loyalty to Shelle describing his removal as “condemnable, and in the interest of the opposition”. Addressing newsmen in Lagos, Publicity Secretary of the youth group, Mr Abiodun Abari faulted the role of the party’s Youth Leader condemning the “way and manner the aggrieved persons rushed to press without exploring available options to resolve their grievances internally.” Condemning the removal of the state party chairman, Abari urged “all parties to maintain status quo in the interest of peace and the sensitivity of the period.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/lagos-pdp-removes-state-youth-leader/ |

….says only Chairman, Publicity Secretary can speak for party The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has bemoaned the lack of synergy in its pronouncements in the media saying, personal opinions of its party members are sometimes presented as official positions on national issues, particularly, during the 2015 election campaign. It has therefore directed that only statements from the National Chairman and the National Publicity Secretary or any other national officer of the party authorized by the National Working Committee should be regarded as the official position of its party. In a statement by Olisa Metuh, National Publicity Secretary, said the party’s new media accounts were also hacked, resulting in the release of unauthorised statements, hence the party has decided to decommission the social media accounts. The statement : “The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) observed that in the course of the 2015 campaigns, personal positions and opinions of our party members were generally reported in many instances by the media as official positions of the PDP. “We have also noted that some of our new media handles; our facebook and twitter accounts have been hacked resulting in series of unauthorized releases, with the latest being Sunday’s post quoting our party as accepting responsibility for failure in the last 16 years; a statement which could not have come from the PDP that has a robust record of achievements in all sectors of our national life within the period. “However, now that the campaigns are over, we wish to notify the general public especially the media that henceforth only statements, utterances and positions of the National Chairman and the National Publicity Secretary or any other national officer of the party authorized by the National Working Committee shall be regarded and reported as the official position of our great party in line with the relevant provisions of the PDP constitution. “For purposes of clarity, this directive does not in anyway affect the inalienable constitutionally guaranteed rights of our members as free citizens to hold and air opinions but such personal opinion must not in anyway be rendered or reported as the official position of the PDP. “Furthermore, to halt the embarrassing trend in our social media handles, the party has decided to decommission our official twitter and facebook accounts for now, to pave way for proper overhauling of the system. “The foregoing is pursuant to our determination to rebuild and reposition our great party, instill discipline in our fold, check unnecessary divergences and put the PDP on a strong footing to regain power in 2019.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/our-social-media-accounts-hacked-pdp/ |
