As it is the only naval port and air station Russia has on the Mediterranean it is of great strategic importance to Russia, especially for its Black Sea naval fleet, as well as an airbase from which to conduct air operations in the Middle East.

Since Turkey is a NATO member, should it close off the Straits of Bosphorus to the Russian Black Sea fleet, it would be essential for it to have an operating capability out on the Mediterranean.

Another thing you have to realize is that, not only is the Syrian government “supported” by terrorist groups, but “The Rebels” are also “supported” by terrorist groups.

The only group in Syria that is NOT “supported” by a terrorist group is, itself, a terrorist group.
