Before he arrived on the scene and joined us, I stated that if only Pastors had some basic knowledge of science, perhaps some damage could be averted. Well my friend comes and somehow revives the conversation and states that evolution is false. He asks how come there are still monkeys if evolution is true.
My right eye still hurts from the facepalm. not all who studies evolution understands it. Not all why study biology know it. |

davidylan: 1. well you dont know that the earth does not expand to infinity now do you?
2. While any gas can cause rustling, i can bet there will be some dogmatic folks (like you) who would absolutely insist that in the absence of an obvious/visible external force, a rustling grass can only be due to a gas that contains oxygen. How am I dogmatic? Have I forced you to accept BB? I only said remain skeptical till there is empirical data. Does the earth expand at all? How can anyone of my educational level suggest anything like your 2 point? How can anyone of your own educational level even think of anything like that. Dont mistake me for those people in your sunday school. I think, ok? |
Christianity Etc › Re: God Created His Own Life by ooman(m): 7:41am On Feb 13, 2015 |
Anything that has life is life. Life is an inherent property of anything that lives.
If all life must come from a previous life, it makes sense to ask who gave god life. Else I can also assume no one gave other living things life. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Newsflash!! Forget Bigbang, Forget Creationism, The Universe Had No Begining. by ooman(m): 7:32am On Feb 13, 2015 |
davidylan: that's overly simplistic as to be downright laughable. Anything that gets bigger started from a point... ergo the BB is true? I might as well also tell you that anything that rustles grass contains oxygen right? No you can't. Any gas can cause rustling. Anything that expands got started and must be pretty (astronomically) recent. Else its expansion would be for infinity and to infinity, and everything would have torn appart, and we couldn't be here. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Newsflash!! Forget Bigbang, Forget Creationism, The Universe Had No Begining. by ooman(m): 7:28am On Feb 13, 2015 |
plaetton: Like I said before, this new idea does not deny that the big occurred. No. This idea speculates on pre-bigbang scenario. It does has some say on bigbang and post bibang scenario. From the article: In addition to not predicting a Big Bang singularity, the new model does not predict a "big crunch" singularity, either. In general relativity, one possible fate of the universe is that it starts to shrink until it collapses in on itself in a big crunch and becomes an infinitely dense point once again. It even removes the possibility of the big crunch, as suggested by relativity. So it doesn't just hint something on bigbang, it also removes big crunch, a post bigbang event, from the list of outcomes. If you study the artist's representation of the universe according to the new model, you'd realize it proposes a flat but open and at the same time, expanding universe. Does this make sense? |

Christianity Etc › Re: Newsflash!! Forget Bigbang, Forget Creationism, The Universe Had No Begining. by ooman(m): 7:06am On Feb 13, 2015 |
davidylan: I agree... which is why you may understand my strong opposition to the BB. There is no observational evidence outside of desperate projections to support it. As i said earlier, if there was strong evidence for it, why would people be looking for alternatives?
lol the pope endorses the BB and that makes it right? The pope also endorses the idea of heaven, you also believe that too? I didn't make reference to the pope to prove or disprove BB. I made reference to him because this new theory is a [new] slap on his face. I think inflation (expanding universe) and CMBR are enough empirical data for BB. Though I knew the BB model doesn't have all the answer, I accepted it because of CMBR, it even showed us how the universe was when it was 300,000 years old. Now we are supposed to throw those data away? People look for alternative to solve problems unsolved by general relativity. But considering that GR has stood the test of time, at least up till now, I will stick with it a little longer. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Newsflash!! Forget Bigbang, Forget Creationism, The Universe Had No Begining. by ooman(m): 6:47am On Feb 13, 2015 |
davidylan: you've unwittingly exposed the weakness of CMBR being evidence for the BB and the laughable unseriousness of plaetton's claims. First, if indeed CMBR was unquestioningly evidence of the BB, do you think anyone would be speculating about other alternatives? Its like knowing the exact value of acceleration due to gravity and then wasting time trying to prove it could also be 2. Secondly, the idea plaetton put forward came from a "reputable" atheist site (so you cant claim christians are trying to make things up). Surely they know about CMBR? why are they skeptical enough about it to propound another theory? Perhaps the model will have another purpose/cause for CMBR. I didn't say anyone was making anything up. Am only suggesting we should have observational evidence before propagating such model. Am sure the pope will have headache after hearing of this, considering he just recently endorsed BB. He is not be the first pope to do so, anyway. |

Its just a matter of directing efforts wisely. You would have to think of how to observe that awareness or subjective experience, in a scientific way. You have to wonder why your current tools don't suffice. Its not simply a matter of getting up and going to the lab to do science.
Science does not understand consciousness. It needs philosophy, as it always does in times of doubt. It is even more pertinent in this case where we can see consciousness so clearly and science can't. Exactly what does philosophy and philosophers know about consciousness that is absolute? |

You dont philosophize what you dont know.
We dont have all information about consciousness yet, philosophy is to total waste of time on this.
You can only philosophize what you know.
Philosophy at this point will only lead to conclusion before knowledge. |

DeevaB: I will recommend these two movies 1. God's not dead (2014) 2. Left behind (2014). These two movies have helped and moved me a lot. Don't give up there is a God up there even sometimes when it seems he's not there or he can't hear. JustBelieve
Radisson gives Josh twenty minutes at the end of the first three lecture sessions to argue that God exists. In the first two debates, Radisson has counter arguments for all of Josh's points. Josh's girlfriend Kara (Cassidy Gifford) tries to convince him to either drop out of class or follow Radisson's rules, fearing that standing up to Radisson will jeopardize their academic future, but she eventually breaks up with him when he refuses to disown his belief in God. Ultimately, it comes down to the third and final debate between Radisson and Josh, who again both make compelling points. Josh then halts his line of debate to pose a question to Radisson: "Why do you hate God?" After Josh repeats the question twice more, Radisson explodes in rage, confirming he hates God for his mother's death that left him alone despite his prayers. Josh then casually asks Radisson how he can hate someone that does not exist. In the end, Martin (Paul Kwo), a foreign exchange student whose father had encouraged him not to convert to Christianity so he can stay focused with the class, stands up and says "God's not dead." Almost the entire class follows Martin's lead, causing Radisson to leave the room in defeat.
This movie represents the atheist position so wrongly that it has been widely criticized. It assumes that people are atheists because something bad happened to them. Well guess what, something bad happen to everyone, so this movie is greatly flawed. This movie is nothing more than christian flattery. |

benalvino1: The atheist points out the principle of the conservation of energy: that energy can be neither created nor destroyed, but only change forms (it can equally be said that “matter can be neither created nor destroyed…”).
using the conservation of energy to argue against the beginning of the universe reveals confusion about cosmology to begin with. Scientists can extrapolate back to the beginning of the big bang–which is the moment when both space and time came into existence, along with all of the material world. So we know scientifically that there was a moment when there was no matter at all. It was created, not out of other matter, but out of nothing. Here is the key to note: it is once the universe came into existence that the laws of nature came into effect–before the universe, there was nothing.
So if we use the conservation of energy... how did the matter that causes the big bang come in to existence? How come we as human beings are so well constructed along with animals? Why when we are being formed from which ever bacteria you chose we are formed in male and female?
What kind of chance made us humans? With our eyes, legs, brain, heart, liver, or are they a wonderful construction of a supernatural being? Read some books, do some thinking and all your questions will be answered. |
