My guess was right on. On that long break from NL, you were getting in touch with you inner atheist.
Everyone has his or her inner atheist, when reason tries to overpower the primitive parts of the brain.
You have successfully conquered you fears to question your long held beliefs.
Bravo. You are brave.

I must say that I feel privileged to have witnessed the evolution of a former religious nut to a rational , introspective, enquiring human being.
Evolution from homo religilous to homo sapien sapien.

Good luck Frosbel in your search for meaning, understanding and wisdom.

It's quite sad that most african atheist are powering their atheistic views through an european perspective and perceptions. Most if not all atheist debunk the god concepts through the dogmas of foreign religion and scared text.

The mysteries of our existence is intertwine with our history.. According to, my ancestoral teachings. Man desire to know God is to understand the cosmo and make peace on one hand and on the other hand understand his fellow man and make peace." God to my ancestors was knowledge. Do I turn around and say God does not exist because european authors wrote it from a scholarly perspective.

Mind you present day influence on atheistic knowledge is to promote a supremacist ideology. You as an African atheist who do you quote to define intellect... A bunch of european intellectuals.. Where does that put you in the scheme of our collective realities..

Africans can lead too..! Stop all this follow follow..

You know, if Google it, you'd find a lot of Black intellectuals who are atheists and Black intellectual materials on atheism.

What I cannot guarantee you is if any of those are directly related to Africa. Africans are lost in the past, lost to the white christ, lost to religion.

FOLYKAZE:

Now that we know what atheism is. Do you care to tell us what you mean by God, considering the fact that the word God is a vague word that could mean different thing to different people. Nuclearboy in one of his post define God as any being or thing that is been worship. He went ahead in his post saying that worship means acknowledging one's worth. As for prayer, he said it mean petition. Therefore, going by his definition, God could be human or the the in your backyard.

Don't let us go western, orisha in Yoruba is God. We both know that the twin brother down your streets are orisha. As a conscious being, you are an orisha which equate all of us as a living and existing God.

God, in the general term. The very intelligent, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient guy in the sky - who take people to heaven with him to worship him for eternity, and burn those who dont believe in him in hell forever.

Any other definition of god you have is not referred to in the FAQ.

FOLYKAZE:
I have seen in one of your post and that of pattern where you both admit that energy is God. . . . . To science thought, you are both correct. But we know that energy exist.

I never admitted that energy is god.

I dont know who "pattern" is.

What I said to anyone concerning energy is that there must be a material that is eternal, from which everything came, to which everything return. This stuff is not intelligent and does not need intelligence to change.

I never used the word "God". God is a state of nihility to me.

FOLYKAZE:
So if God could be a tag or label or perception through which some people view natural world, would you still disbelief in God?

If god is just a label, why are we still talking about belief or disbelief? Sounds like god mean more to you!

FOLYKAZE:
In Yoruba, the entire is this goddess called orisha Ile. She is popularly called mother earth in the other part of world. She is been called different name but worship as one in different culture across the world. And this goddess is nothing but our planet earth.

Whatever...

FOLYKAZE:
So going by your definition, would you say that god does not exist?

Yep, definitely. Planet earth is no god to me, its just planet earth, ok?

FOLYKAZE:
Does human, nature and universe been referred to as God mean they don't exist because your definition says otherwise?

You can't make an argument this way. You don't just give your own definition to stuff and use it your own way, and expect people to agree with you. This is a logical fallacy.

FOLYKAZE:
If the word god is not definite, atheism either strong or weak is not worth discussing

Yea... cheesy

FOLYKAZE:
Does atheism have anything to do with spiritualism? I believe spiritualism begat science.

People also believe a lot of things. What you should know now is that belief systems do not matter.

FOLYKAZE:
The strong atheist who attest that he knows there is no God should provide evidence that there is nothing like god

Is there a pig that flies?

FOLYKAZE:
Like I told Pastoraio, there must be always a cause to a happening. That cause is what some refer to as God the creator. A universe from nothing is logical fallacy. That something that caused the bang is the God. You atheist look away from this first cause because it is called God.

Every one agrees to a cause, or series of causes. What this cause is, is what causes disagreement. No one is talking about a universe from nothing. If you understand "nothing" from physics point of view, you'd realize that there is no "nothing". There is always something getting made and destroyed.

FOLYKAZE:
Does atheism have anything to do with ghost, spirit, alien and magic?

Really?

FOLYKAZE:
There is this definition I found in Oxford dictionary, football is said to be religion.

With that, I don't see how atheism isn't religion

Is not believing that pigs can fly a religion?

OLAADEGBU:

1. The universe created itself:

Can something create itself? Can nothing create something? The answer to these is an absolute No. We all know that something cannot create itself and nothing can't create something. From Latin we have the phrase "ex nihilo, nihil fit" meaning "from nothing, nothing comes." It also violates the law of cause and effect, that says for every effect there must be a cause. The effect can't be greater than the cause and nothing cannot be greater than something. Therefore, based on the laws of science and logic, the universe couldn't have created itself. That leaves us with options 2 and 3.

2. The univese has always existed:

Lets go to the 2nd law of thermodynamics that basically teaches that "the whole universe is losing usable energy for doing usable work." This means that the usable energy in this universe is wearing down. The universe as a whole is losing energy. In other words, molecules as a whole are slowing down.

Therefore, if this universe was eternal we will be in what is called a "virtual heat death." This means that there will be virtually no molecular movement. Everything would have lost its available heat energy for doing work. Therefore, the universe cannot be eternal, it must have had a beginning. The theory that the universe has always existed or is eternal has to be false based on the law of science and logic, another speculation gone with the air. This leaves us with only one possibility based on science. Which is that:

From Point 1 - How did god come into existence, considering point 2 rules out eternal existence, since there will always be loss of energy?

Note that your point 2 is wrong though - The total amount of matter and energy in the universe is constant (conserved) - Law of conservation of matter and energy. Google that tongue

You don't even need to use faith to believe that God is anywhere and everywhere. What you need is a brain that works and your 5 physical senses. When I look at a building, how do I know that there was a builder? I couldn't want a better evidence that there was a builder than to have the building in front of me. I don't even need faith to know that there was a builder. All I need are eyes that can see and a brain that can think.

The same principle applies to the existence of God. When I look at creation, how can I know that there was a Creator? Creation reveals to me that there is a Creator. I couldn't want a better evidence that there is a Creator than to have the creation in front of me. I don't need faith to believe in a Creator, all I need are eyes that can see and a brain that can think.

"For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse" (Romans 1:20).

But if I want the builder to do something for me, then I need to have faith in the builder.

"Without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6).

To develop a loving relationship with God you will need to believe that He exists and is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

circular reasoning again.

You assume a god exist, you form a relationship by faith, then you believe you will actually meet him when you die.

All these are abstracts, no reality.

See you are moving in circles again?

Your "circular reasoning" argument is absurd. What you are saying is that by trying to prove the Bible as true by quoting from the Bible is circular reasoning but you in the same breath agree you can prove that Obama lives in the White by looking into the White House. It is by looking into the White House that will provide the necessary evidence that he lives there. Apart from quoting from the Bible, we also have many fulfilled prophecies, amazing consistency and the many scientific facts to prove that the Bible is the Word of God, they provide evidence that it is supernatural in origin.

This is why knowledge is different from faith. I can know Obama is there, but I can only believe by faith that god is anywhere.

Religion / Re: Atheism FAQ - For Atheists And Theists by ooman(m): 1:31pm On Dec 22, 2014
Does it require faith to be an atheist?

No. See "What is atheism?", "Isn't atheism just another religion?", and "Do atheists claim to know that there is no god?", above. Atheism is the lack of belief in any gods. It does not require faith in anything to not believe in something else.

Note that the word faith has multiple meanings. If you have faith that the sun will rise, or faith in the progress of science, it means you have confidence in it, often based on evidence or past experience. If you have faith in a god, it means that you hold a firm belief in the absence of evidence, or even in spite of contradictory, evidence.

Is atheism the same thing as agnosticism?

No. Atheism and agnosticism are answers to two separate questions.

An atheist answers the question, "Do you believe in a god?" with "No."

An agnostic answers the question, "Is there a god?" with the only logical answer: "That is not knowable". (Someone who answers "I don't know", as in "what are you talking about?" is ignorant of gods and, technically, an atheist.)

Since gods are outside the bounds of nature, the question isn't even wrong. It's an untestable hypothesis. So agnosticism states that the answer is unknowable by anyone, as illustrated by the bumper sticker: Militant agnostic: I don't know, and you don't either.

So atheism is the absence of a particular belief (in deities) while agnosticism is the position that the existence of deities is unknowable.

As I often put it, ask me what I know and I'm an agnostic. Ask me what I believe and I'm an atheist.

Does "agnostic" mean "undecided" or "not sure"?

No. See "Is atheism the same thing as agnosticism?", above.

Is atheism satanism?

No. Satanism started as a parody religion invented by Anton LaVey to tweak Abrahamic religions. Some Christians seem to think they are actually believers in Satan. To believe in Satan one would almost have to believe in the god he antagonizes. While one could technically believe in Satan and not in any other gods, that would be cutting a fine line on the definition since Satan is just as imaginary as any other supernatural being. (Satan, in fact, matches the definition of most gods.) I sincerely doubt you'd find any atheists in that camp. This question is here only because I know some churches teach that atheism is satanism. Ironically, Christians (who believe in the devil) are closer to being satanists than atheists likely could be.

What is the atheist response to Pascal's Wager?

Pascal's Wager is a wobbly, hoary bit of sophistry which can be demolished trivially with one question: Which god? Even Homer Simpson gets it.

Suppose we’ve chosen the wrong god. Every time we go to church we’re just making him madder and madder!

It also, rather comically, not only suggests the hypocritical response of pretending to believe in a god, but posits a god who either doesn't mind or can't detect the hypocrisy.

Isn't this FAQ dogma or a claim to authority?

No. This FAQ only exists because theists insist on asking the same questions over and over and over and over and over. A lot.

Religion / Atheism FAQ - For Atheists And Theists by ooman(m): 1:27pm On Dec 22, 2014
What is atheism?

Atheism is the lack of belief in any god or gods. That's it. While this should be obvious, many people seem to think it implies other things. It doesn't. The only generalization you can make about all atheists is that they don't believe in any gods.

The term atheism often invites misconceptions. Unlike a typical -ism, atheism does not refer to a particular positive ideology, and there is no school of thought behind it. It is used as a blanket term to refer merely to the absence of something others may happen to have.

Do atheists claim to know that there is no god?

Only a very few, sometimes referred to as strong atheists, are willing to say "I know there is no god." Some atheists will say they disbelieve in any gods. A large number of atheists will simply say that since there is no evidence of any god ever having existed they will live their lives as if none do because that's the only rational choice. And there are atheists who simply have never considered gods one way or another. Atheism is the default, after all. See also "Is Atheism the Same Thing as Agnosticism?", below.

Does atheism have anything to do with science?

No. Atheism is the lack of a certain belief. Science is a method for finding out how nature works. Being an atheist does not make you scientific. Being a scientist does not make you an atheist.

Are atheists wrong because they have no proof that a god doesn't exist?

No. A basic tenet of critical thinking is that the burden of proof, or evidence, is on the party making the claim. See Russell's teapot. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and that which is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. All of which means it is not the atheist's job to find evidence to refute the existence of a god. When a claim is made it is the responsibility of the one making the claim to provide evidence for it.

Are atheists ignoring the complexity of the universe as proof of a god?

No. Arguments of the form, "The universe/life/mind/quantum physics is so complex that there must be a god" are not evidence, they are logical fallacies. They are examples of The Appeal to Ignorance, also known as the God of the gaps.

Does atheism have anything to do with the theory of evolution?

No. Atheism is the lack of a belief in any gods. Evolution is the scientific theory which explains speciation. Being an atheist does not mean you accept evolution. Accepting evolution does not make you an atheist. They are completely separate, unrelated topics. Many creationists insist on conflating the two.

Does atheism have anything to do with morality?

No. Morality evolved along with our sense of empathy. No external authority is required to explain morality, much less a god for which there is no evidence. Being an atheist does not make you immoral. Being a theist does not make you moral.

Isn't atheism just another religion?

No. While there are religions that are arguably atheist, such as Buddhism, atheism is the lack of a specific religious feature. As the old saw goes, if atheism is a religion then not collecting stamps is a hobby.

This is not to say that a few atheists don't make what is essentially a supernatural claim to knowledge. See "Do atheists claim to know that there is no god?", above.

Janna Seliger:
I was diagnosed with major clinical depression and generalized anxiety disorder two years ago. These are rather common ailments and common treatments are all very effective, but like many others I decided to do some research. After scouring dozens of self-help books, I've found one piece of advice from them all to be rather consistent: be spiritual. At first, I scoffed at this idea. I don't believe in a god. I'm an atheist. Spiritualism and atheism just didn't seem to fit together. I kept on reading, though, and I discovered that perhaps even an atheist like myself could benefit from getting in touch with my spiritual side.

Now, let's get things straight - being spiritual does not mean being religious. Religion can be a component, yes, but that's not all there is to it. Spirituality does have connotations of belief in a higher power, but just because you don't believe in any gods doesn't mean you can't have faith in something larger than yourself.

To get in touch with my spiritual side, I decided to experiment a little. I started with yoga. It's spiritual and it's exercise, so what could be better? Unfortunately, yoga just wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't like it. Next I tried meditation, which I did like. I found that inside myself there is a sort of "soul". Sure, I don't believe that it's anything other than synapses and neurons and neurotransmitters, but it's there. It's just more abstract than I might have thought.

And therein lies the key to becoming a spiritual atheist: realizing that there are things so abstract that they go beyond our comprehension. This complication to life and to nature is our higher power. You don't need to go worshiping trees to appreciate this, however; pick up any science textbook and you'll find numerous abstract theories, concepts, and natural occurrences that are difficult to truly wrap your mind around.

How can I express this sort of spirituality, then? There are many ways, really. Nature walks can bring us closer to the natural universe. Meditation can bring us closer to ourselves and our thoughts. Reading can bring us closer to the vast array of knowledge collected by humanity. Showing compassion towards others brings us closer to each other and strengthens our complex human bonds.

Many atheists and religious folks alike might still believe the idea of a spiritual atheist to be flat-out ridiculous, but I find myself to be living proof that one doesn't need a god to realize that there's something greater than ourselves out there. You don't need a church to bring yourself closer to it. You don't need holy scriptures, prophets, or pilgrimages. For some of us, a simple walk through the woods or a fifteen minute meditation session is all we need. Knowledge of the complexity of our universe alone could be enough.

Though the path I took was a difficult one, being mentally ill and all, but it's not one I regret. I am grateful that through the tribulations of depression and anxiety I have discovered a side of myself I would have thought to be non-existent. I am a stronger, more complete person because of it.

I'm a spiritual atheist.
