How many of us still remember the Michael power Guinness adverts of those days, when Michael power would drink a bottle of Guinness and would start to perform stunts that are humanly impossible? Do you remember how He makes us feel that we too can do things that other people can admire And how at the end of a long heroic day Michael Power treats his weary but picturesque body to a well-earned power-shower. The camera lingers as he soaps up his perfect peace, but then disaster strikes - the water runs out. Our hero, along with millions of fellow Africans, has fallen victim to a corrupt politician who is diverting funds away from fresh water projects in order to buy weapons. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/FtlSxM8Yaro?feature=player_detailpage" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> In a nutshell that is the plot of Critical Assignment - clean water and dirty politics. Predictably, our hero dodges bullets, flies helicopters and gets the girl. Naturally, he outwits the bad guys and restores the clean water supply to a grateful nation. Rather unique As an action movie Critical Assignment is not terribly original. But as an African action movie it is rather unique. Stunts and special effects demand big budgets which are not normally available to African film makers. In fact, both the film and the character of Michael Power were created by the beer company Guinness. For several years 'Michael Power' has starred in a highly sophisticated pan-African ad campaign. These days he is much more than a handsome face smiling down from a billboard. For the crowd at the premiere in Douala, Michael Power is a hero. As one fan said: "He makes us feel that we too can do things that other people can admire". The next step was for Guinness to cash in on his phenomenal success and fund a movie specifically for its highly lucrative African market. Entertainment not realism Critical Assignment was partly filmed in Nigeria and Cameroon - respectively Guinness's fourth and fifth biggest markets in the world. On one level it is no more than a feature length advert for beer. On another level it is one of the first big budget action movies to be filmed entirely in Africa, with African actors, using African crews. The British producer, Bob Mahoney, says it was a challenge to film in six different countries but it was his brief to "make it African". "We made a conscious effort at points in the script to get back out there and show Africa". The result, at times, is like a promotional film for the African tourist board - a montage of bustling city streets, colourful market scenes, wildlife and culture. Our hero even finds time to go on safari. The producers say their aim was entertainment and not realism. So their Africa has wonderful architecture but no roadside rubbish dumps, lively streets but no beggars, plush New York-style apartments but no shanty towns. But the Cameroonian audience did not share my reservations. At the first glimpse of one of Douala's major landmarks there was a huge cheer of delight. A brief scene in the Marche des Fleurs prompted an animated discussion about which friends and relatives could be spotted in the background. For them it was enough to enjoy the simple pleasure of seeing their own country and their own hero up there on the silver screen.

READ ORIGINAL STORY HERE: http://www.whispernaija.com/2013/05/tuface-idibia-mrs-anenih-escape-death.html But for providence, Nigeria would have lost many illustrious sons and daughters, including pop star, Tuface, the wife of the maverick politician, Tony Anenih, and some Senators. Below is the story of their near death experience in an averted air disaster... A very big disaster was averted last Sunday, May 19th, when a South African Airways Airbus A340-600, registration ZS-SNG performing flight SA-60 from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Lagos (Nigeria) conveying over 300 people developed an electrical fault in Mid-air. It's a surprise the incident didn't get to the media since Sunday. According to a source, I heard about it on Wednesday when a colleague of mine was narrating the entire story to me and another guy in his car. According to him, he was on the flight that faithful day. It was a night flight and he was listening to music from his Ipod when he perceived a foul burning odor, he thought the white man sitting next to him had farted but he knew it was something serious when he noticed people panicking. He pulled his headphones and asked the white guy sitting next to him why people where panicking, all the white man was saying was "This plane is going to crash! This plane s going to crash!" All of a sudden the lighting system in the aircraft went off…everyone was mad with fear.. some started praying others brought out their blackberries and started pinging, some started calling loved ones and telling them their last wishes. The captain then announced that the plane had developed an electrical fault and they were going to have an emergency landing. The pilot then turned the plane around and headed back to South Africa. My colleague then revealed that it was then he saw 2face Idibia walk past him... After 45 minutes, the captain announced that they were going to ‘dump the fuel’ i.e remove all the Jet Fuel on the plane, this is a precautionary step taken by pilots whenever a plane is going to crash or whenever there is a risk of fire. As they were about to land….another problem came up…the captain announced that the tires of the plane could not come out..by then everyone on the plane had given up. Miraculously, the tires came out later and the plane successfully landed and the passengers were evacuated. My colleague then said that himself and other passengers were taken to the arrival lounge, that was when he met Tony Anenih’s wife, Josephine. Investigation later revealed that it was a kettle that sparked in the kitchen that affected the whole electrical system of the plane. A lot of Nigerians, including senators, constituted the bulk of passengers. READ ORIGINAL STORY HERE: http://www.whispernaija.com/2013/05/tuface-idibia-mrs-anenih-escape-death.html
