Nairaland / General / Breaking News: EFCC Arrests Innocent Chukwuma, Innoson Motors Boss by Opeedo(m): 12:50pm On Dec 19, 2017
@NaijaNews

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested Innocent Chukwuma, the founder and chairman of Innoson Motors.

A spokesperson of the company, Cornel Osigwe, said that Chukwuma was arrested at his residence in Enugu around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Osigwe said, “His arrest is in connection to the ongoing case he has with GTBank.”

Osigwe disclosed to Premium Times that his boss was accused of jumping bail and wondered how someone who was never invited by the anti-graft agency or arrested would be levelled with such accusation.

“He was never invited by the EFCC, we challenge them to come forward with any evidence showing that he jumped bail.

“This is GTBank using federal authorities to persecute an illustrious citizen who has done a lot to improve the economic development of this country,” he said.

A spokesperson for GTBank, Meksley Nwagboh, however, denied the bank’s hands in the arrest, saying if the “EFCC arrested him they will be in a best position to comment on the reason for his arrest.”

The EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said he had not been briefed about the arrest when reached for comments.

Naija News gathered that Innoson Company accused GTBank of being indebted to the auto manufacturing company up to N8.5 billion in a series of damages that originated from illegal service deductions by the bank.

Premium Times reports that an initial fraud case brought against Chukwuma was withdrawn earlier this year. But the Attorney-General Abubakar Malami resuscitated the case at the Federal High Court in Abuja as GTBank maintains its allegations that Chukwuma manipulated bank and shipping documents to obtain tax waivers from the Nigerian government.

Okorocha clarifies misconception on Ministry of Happiness
Imo State Government has said that one of its ministry’s was wrongly named the Ministry of Happiness and Couple’s

Attributing the error to be a typographic error on the part of the printers the government said the ministry is actually the Ministry of Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment.

Naija News recalls that Okorocha swore in 28 commissioners including his sister Ogechi Ololo, who was inaugurated as the Commissioner for Happiness and

Governor Rochas Okorocha Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo said it is now called Ministry of Happiness and Purpose Fulfilment.

“There was a typographic error in the first statement issued on the swearing in of the new commissioners. The word “Couple” was inadvertently written, instead of the word

“Purpose, we regret that. The real essence of life is to be happy and to fulfil one’s purpose in life; Government officials are elected to address this.

“Happiness and Purpose Fulfilment Ministry therefore, is established for the lost time to correct the policy framework to guide ministries and departments on what they must do to guarantee the citizens’ happiness and contribute better to the society.

“This is the very reason people elect their leaders: to guarantee their happiness and purpose fulfilment. A great leader therefore, is one who provides happiness to the people.

“Unfortunately, this vital element of our social lives has not been properly addressed. Governments at different levels have created several ministries and departments to achieve this, yet people are bitter, angry with hate speeches which lead to crisis, war and even terrorism.

“The choice of Mrs Ogechi Ololo, a Masters Degree Holder in computer Science, USA who has been the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor on Domestic Matters and Food Security can be described as a round peg in a round hole. Before her appointment as the supervisory commissioner, she was charged with the responsibility of liaising with the Federal Government on N-Power Project, CBN Anchor project and BOI, Empowerment Projects.”

The governor has also set up other similar Ministries which include the Ministry of Non Formal sector and Market development to tackle issues of the poor state of Imo Markets and organize the non-formal sector to enhance their productivity.

The Ministry of education was also divided into three ministries, Primary and secondary, Tertiary non-Formal Education, ICT, Science and Technology.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has decamped from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He announced his departure from the ruling party in a statement he issued on Friday morning.

Here is the statement of resignation below:

Statement of resignation of His Excellency Atiku Abubakar (Waziri Adamawa) Vice President of Nigeria, 1999-2007 from the All Progressives Congress

On the 19th of December, 2013, I received members of the All Progressives Congress at my house in Abuja. They had come to appeal to me to join their party after my party, the Peoples Democratic Party, had become factionalized as a result of the special convention of August 31, 2013.

The fractionalization of the Peoples Democratic Party on August 31, 2013 had left me in a situation where I was, with several other loyal party members, in limbo, not knowing which of the parallel executives of the party was the legitimate leadership.

It was under this cloud that members of the APC made the appeal to me to join their party, with the promise that the injustices and failure to abide by its own constitution which had dogged the then PDP, would not be replicated in the APC and with the assurance that the vision other founding fathers and I had for the PDP could be actualized through the All Progressives Congress.

It was on the basis of this invitation and the assurances made to me that I, being party-less at that time, due to the fractionalization of my party, accepted on February 2, 2014, the hand of fellowship given to me by the All Progressives Congress.

On that day, I said “it is the struggle for democracy and constitutionalism and service to my country and my people that are driving my choice and my decision” to accept the invitation to join the All Progressives Congress.

Like you, I said that because I believed that we had finally seen the beginnings of the rebirth of the new Nigeria of our dreams which would work for all of us, old and young.

However, events of the intervening years have shown that like any other human and like many other Nigerians, I was fallible.

While other parties have purged themselves of the arbitrariness and unconstitutionality that led to fractionalization, the All Progressives Congress has adopted those same practices and even gone beyond them to institute a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced.

Only last year, a governor produced by the party wrote a secret memorandum to the president which ended up being leaked. In that memo, he admitted that the All Progressives Congress had “not only failed to manage expectations of a populace that expected overnight ‘change’ but has failed to deliver even mundane matters of governance”.

Of the party itself, that same governor said “Mr. President, Sir Your relationship with the national leadership of the party, both the formal (NWC) and informal (Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso), and former Governors of ANPP, PDP (that joined us) and ACN, is perceived by most observers to be at best frosty. Many of them are aggrieved due to what they consider total absence of consultations with them on your part and those you have assigned such duties.”

Since that memorandum was written up until today, nothing has been done to reverse the treatment meted out to those of us invited to join the All Progressives Congress on the strength of a promise that has proven to be false. If anything, those behaviours have actually worsened.

But more importantly, the party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people. How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth.

A party that does not take the youth into account is a dying party. The future belongs to young people.

I admit that I and others who accepted the invitation to join the APC were eager to make positive changes for our country that we fell for a mirage. Can you blame us for wanting to put a speedy end to the sufferings of the masses of our people?

Be that as it may be, after due consultation with my God, my family, my supporters and the Nigerian people whom I meet in all walks of life, I, Atiku Abubakar, Waziri Adamawa, hereby tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress while I take time to ponder my future.

May God bless you and may God bless Nigeria.

Nairaland / General / Osun Pensioners Accuse Aregbesola Of Diverting Bailout Funds by Opeedo(m): 3:15pm On Nov 23, 2017
@NaijaNews

Pensioners claim Aregbesola diverted funds meant to pay salaries and gratuities.
The forum of Osun Pensioners in Osun State have accused the State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola of diverting the bail out funds given by the Federal Government for payment of gratuities and arrears.

The Chairman of the forum, Mr Ilesanmi Omoniyi, Osogbo on Wednesday called for quick intervention to alleviate their predicament.

The pensioners said they were yet to be paid, even though the state was given N83.9 billion by the the Federal Government to pay the accumulated gratuities and salaries.

According to them the gratuities spanned between 2008 and 2012, including 13 months pension arrears.

Omoniyi lamented that the pensioners are living in a pathetic condition, adding that over 2,000 of their members have died due to the hardship.

He said the government did not yield to their persistent pleas and remained indifferent to their condition.

However, the state government, in a statement released by Commissioner for Information, Mr Adelani Badarinwa, described the pensioners’ allegations as false.

“The 2011/2012 pensioners group are fraction of those who retired from service in 2012 to avoid being part of the Contributory Pension Scheme.

“As a government, we categorically state that government has paid workers and pensioner up to date with the modulated structure agreed opon by the government and the labour unions since 2015. Government does not owe any worker or pensioner based on the modulated payment scheme as the pensioners have alleged.

“We wish to put it on record that Aregbesola increased the amount being paid as pension by 500 per cent in 2011. The nonpayment of gratuity is not peculiar to Osun; and the government has shown its readiness to pay the gratuity as soon as the state finances improve.

“It is on record that this group of pensioners had at one time or the other in the past lied against the Government of the State of Osun; and in specific reference they had alleged that government collected a tranche of the Paris Club refund and diverted it only to have a whole month wait for the actual release of the fund”, he said.

Nairaland / General / Anti-open Grazing Law: Herdsmen Rejects Ranching by Opeedo(m): 9:19am On Nov 20, 2017
@NaijaNews

Herdsmen condemns anti-open grazing law.
Fulani herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti-Allah Kautal Hore, have insisted that they will not accept the anti-open grazing law established by the state governments, saying history revealed that ranching was not practicable in Nigeria.

The herdsmen, who made this disclosure to newsmen in Abuja through their socio-cultural association, called on the Federal Government to stop state governments from implementing the anti-open grazing law, especially in Benue and Taraba States.

National Secretary of Miyetti-Allah Kautal Hore, Saleh Alhassan, said ranching will not work in Nigeria due to her geographical location, adding that the anti-open grazing law is an agenda by “desperate” politicians to spoil their means of survival.

He said: “The whole experiment of ranching in Nigeria is a total failure, you can google it, it’s there on the Internet for everyone to see.

“ Right from the 70s,the old Gongola State had experimented ranching, the same with Kaduna State and even the old Plateau State. All the ranches collapsed because the geographical location of this country is not suitable for ranching.

“In places where there are successful ranching in the world, the volume of rain per annum in those areas is at least four to seven months, that’s why you have grasses that can naturally be sustained. At the same time, you must have the necessary breeds that will support even ranching. The current breeds we have in this country cannot be supported by ranching.

“Anywhere you keep these volume of cows we have now, for two weeks, they will eat out everything and you will have ecological disaster. We view the anti-grazing law as an agenda to destroy our means of livelihood by visionless and desperate politicians.

“Anti-grazing laws are nothing but populist agenda designed by visionless and desperate politicians to destroy our means of livelihood. This dangerous gambit must be nib in the bud by the federal government through the security agencies as it portends great danger to the cooperate existence of the country.

“These laws are oppressive and negative and are fundamentally against our culture as Fulani pastoralists, against our economic interest and against the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“ It is important to note that inter-state movement of pastoralists is similar to inter-state commerce and it is only the National Assembly that can legislate on that aspect as captured in item 62 of the exclusive legislative list. So no state governor can decide to stop movement of pastoralists because that is their own form of commerce. So, they have gone against the constitution.

“The laws do not take into cognisance our sociology, our economic interest, our production patterns, climate variations and factors that pushed pastoralists into these migrations. These migrations are not picnics, they are detected by ecological needs.

“It is a common knowledge that the primitive form of agriculture practiced in Benue and Taraba states and indeed all over the country, is not consonant with global best practices. So why singling out the pastoralists and insist that they must ranch which is the global best practice? That’s out argument.

“If the whole agricultural policy, the whole development of agriculture in Nigeria is still at this primitive stage, you cannot single out the herders who are also farmers that they must practice global best practice, it’s not possible.”

“Again, very fundamentally, the River Benue and the tributaries and also the international routes and roads that pass through Benue don’t belong to Benue State Government, they belong to the Federal Government. Benue State Government has no jurisdiction over River Benue, its tributaries, the lakes, the river basins, they are all federal government’s. So how do you now start to legislate to say ‘you are going to stop access to those natural resources?’

“Between January and and early May,is when pastoralists move to the river basins because that is the peak of dry season and most of the rivers pastoralists use to water their animals dried up and they now move towards the River Benue.

“So designing a policy that will exclude the herders completely is wrong, what they should have done is to have restricted areas for the herders and then give them access to grazing corridors and watering points during those peak periods of dry season.

“As cultivation comes up during the rainy season, these people naturally migrate northwest. So, it’s detected by climatic changes. That’s why we are saying it’s not possible, the law will not work because it’s not well thought out, he added.”

“Then for you to create a ranch, the environmental impact assessment must be done on the areas earmarked for the ranch, and it must not take a minimum of two to three seasons. That’s to say you must do studies during the wet season, do studies during the dry season and then repeat it so that you compare before you can say this place is suitable for a ranch.

“So ranch is technologically driven, it’s capital intensive and it’s not practicable for this kind of subsistence farmers we have, the livestock farmers are subsistence farmers. It’s just like saying nobody will cultivate his land if he doesn’t own a tractor, so how many people will go to farm?

“ So, it’s not that we don’t want to respect law and order but when you make an impossible laws, then you are not creating peace. You are either deliberately attempting to provoke conflict for either political reasons or you are being hoodwinked and deceived by desperate political advisers just probably because they want to get money out of you, they make you create laws that will create conflict, he lamented.”

Education / WAEC To Hold 3 Exam Diets As From 2018 by Opeedo(m): 11:14am On Nov 16, 2017

-WAEC introduces new exam diet for private candidates.

-The council explained the step became necessary in order to meet the large demand and curtail exam malpractices.

WAEC introduces new exam for private candidates.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has introduced a new private diet of its examination to curtail private candidates from registering for WASSCE meant for school candidates.

The council reveals the large number of external candidates that register for its examination, has also increased the number of cheats being caught during the conduct of its exams.

The new diet is slated to hold in January/February 2018 and will be launched in Nigeria.

This, in addition to the existing May/June WASSCE for normal school candidates and the November/December diet for private candidates, will bring to three, the number of examinations to be conducted by the WAEC every year starting from 2018.

The new development was revealed by the council’s Head, National Office (HNO), Mr Olu Adenipekun, at the unveiling of the first series of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) diet for private candidates on Wednesday in Lagos.

“After thorough deliberations on the issue, the governing board of the Council approved that its national offices should begin the conduct of one additional diet every year of the WASSCE for private candidates,’’ Adenipekun said.

“The conduct of this additional diet of the WASSCE for private candidates became necessary because the WASSCE for school candidates is written first every year.

“And the results are released before the conduct of the WASSCE for private candidates.

“Therefore, school candidates who wish to retake the examination usually have the opportunities of doing so during the private candidates’ examination.

“But with growing concerns among stakeholders over what they perceived as a denial of equal opportunities against private candidates, there has been a deluge of appeals across the West African Sub-region for Council to reduce the agony of long waiting experienced by the private candidates, who desire another shot at WASSCE.’’

Adenipekun explained that Nigeria will kick start the new diet, candidates will be examined in 19 subjects, with the remaining member countries of WAEC to follow suit at a later date.

“Centres for this examination will be located in cities and urban areas where we have a large number of the candidates.

“We will start with that for now and then gradually, we continue to spread to every nook and cranny of the country,’’ he said.

Politics / Court Orders Temporary Forfeiture Of Patience Jonathan’s N350m by Opeedo(m): 10:58am On Nov 15, 2017

Court grants temporary forfeiture of N350m allegedly owned by Patience Jonathan.
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Tuesday, granted an order for the temporary forfeiture of N350 million allegedly linked to wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience Jonathan.

The presiding judge, Justice Hadiza Rabiu-Shagari gave the directive at the court’s sitting on Tuesday.

Naija News recalls that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had alleged that the cash was transferred to a company’s account while Mrs Jonathan was serving as a Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa State between 2012 and 2013.

The commission also claimed that Patience “unlawfully enriched” herself with the money.

The court order was as a result of EFCC’s ex-parte application filed by the agency’s lawyer, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo.

In a supporting affidavit to the application, an investigating officer at EFCC, Musbahu Yahaya, said the anti-graft agency received “a cogent, direct and positive intelligence report” that a company, AM-PM Global Network Limited, was in custody of proceeds of the illicit act and retained it in an account.

He said between June 20, 2012 and November 15, 2013, the company fraudulently received N1,206,950,000 via its Diamond Bank account, and that the money was “proceeds of unlawful enrichment” derived by Mrs Dame Patience Jonathan.

“Out of the alleged proceed of unlawful enrichment of Mrs Dame Patience Jonathan, the respondent transferred the total sum of N350 million from its account in Diamond Bank to the account sought to be attached (Stanbic IBTC) in a desperate bid to dissipate the funds.

“We have traced the said N350 million to the respondent’s (AM-PM Global Network’s) account sought to be attached and the order of this court is needed to instruct the bank to attach the account to prevent the dissipation of the funds,” he said.

Justice Hadiza decided the application as prayed, and granted “an order directing Manager of the Stanbic IBTC Bank to in the interim freeze the account pending the determination of the investigation and possible prosecution of this case.”

Why is she disgracing the school for other people? We know there are certain women with facial hair but not cutting it down and appearing this rough is just insane. Even guys don't appear this rough. I won't be surprised if the school revokes her admission as soon as this goes viral. It's just wrong.
