Crime / A Nigerian, John Okoro Escapes From Indian Prison by Opeedo(m): 9:09am On Jan 04, 2017
A Nigerian drug peddler, John Okoro who had served a prison term and was a few hours from being deported has made a daring escape from the Anti-Narcotics Cell’s custody, Indian newspapers have reported.

Okoro, 35, had sought permission to step out of the detention room on the first floor of the agency’s Azad Maidan office around 2 a m, saying he wanted to use the toilet, and then jumped from the balcony. He crashed through the asbestos roof and fled on foot.

The constable guarding him also leaped from the balcony in a desperate attempt to nab him, but ended up injured. He is recovering at the Nagpada police hospital.

The Anti-Narcotics Cell’s Azad Maidan office is barely 15 feet from the local police station. The office shares a wall with the police’s station detection room. The Esplanade court is in the same compound.

An alert has been issued for Okoro, who was convicted for trying to selling banned substances in 2014 and recently completed his jail term.

Before his conviction, the 35-year-old Nigerian lived in Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai. After his prison sentence ended, he was placed under the ANC’s custody on December 31 and he was due to be deported on Monday afternoon.

“Around 2 am, Okoro told the constable on guard that he wanted to visit the washroom. He was being taken there when he jumped from the balcony. He landed on the asbestos roof, which immediately gave away,” a police officer said. “He ran in the directions of Mahapalika Marg.”

Another officer said a manhunt had been launched and the Anti-Narcotics Cell had asked informers to be on the lookout. Okoro was wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans and slippers.

Fresh charges stemming from his daring escape have been registered at the Azad Maidan police again.

Politics / Politicians Are Behind Crisis In Southern Kaduna - El-rufai by Opeedo(m): 4:57am On Dec 01, 2016
Nasir el-Rufai, Kaduna state governor, has disclosed that politicians and mischief makers are masterminds of the southern Kaduna crisis

He acknoledged that he was answerable to God over the killings, he explained that his administration inherited the crisis.

El-Rufai said his government had been working very hard to tackle the problem.

He spoke in an interview with the Hausa service of the Voice of America (VOA).

“We inherited the problem and we are working day and night to solve it,” he said.

“We are worried by this sad development because as the governor, God will ask me what I have done over the killings. We are doing all we can but we realised that there are politicians and few mischief makers that are profiting from the crisis.

“They are the ones instigating people and encouraging the cycle of violence. They sow the seed of division by discriminating among people through various means. So, if people are committing crimes and breaking law and order, we should not give it ethnic or tribal interpretations.

“The criminals need to be apprehended and made to face the law period. But some are also using religion and ethnic differences to exploit these attacks.

“They want to portray this government as one that is failing in protecting people and not doing what is expected of her because of the killings and destructions, they want to gain politically.”

el-Rufai disclosed that the state and federal governments were watching and studying those fueling the crisis.

He said such people will be arrested and prosecuted whenever there is enough evidence against them.

He appealed to the people of the state to be tolerant of one another, saying “if God had wanted all of us to practice one religion He would have made us so.”

“He created us to be diverse so that we will learn to tolerate and understand one another and live in peace by treating everyone fairly,” he said.

“So I am appealing to the people of Kaduna state to stop listening to those causing divisions. We should learn to show respect and live in peace. If someone offends you, approach your community leaders and traditional rulers and report them. If they are unable to resolve it, we have the law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities to report to.

“Anyone that decides to take the law into his hand and carry out revenge will be arrested and prosecuted. We will not fold our hands and allow people to be resorting to attacking others in the name of vengeance.”

NYSC / Female Corper Dies In Bayelsa Orientation Camp by Opeedo(m): 4:28am On Dec 01, 2016
The Bayelsa State Orientation Camp at Kaiama, Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of the state has been thrown into a mourning mood following the death of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps, who reportedly died under a mysterious circumstance.

Miss Elechi Chiyerom, aged 27, was confirmed dead on Tuesday. She reportedly bled and vomited after arriving at the camp.

Elechi, a graduate of the Ignatius Azuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was confirmed dead about 9pm on Tuesday five days after arriving at the camp.

According to her colleagues the deceased had been “terribly sick” since she arrived at the camp and could not participate in some opening sessions at the camp.

Some officials of the NYSC claimed that the development was a case of “non-disclosure” of state of health by the corps member.

It was learnt that a search on her hostel section showed signs of excessive bleeding with her clothing and sanitary pads soaked in blood.

It was also learnt that the deceased corps member reportedly relapsed into ill-health and was rushed to the sick bay of the camp at about 8pm on Tuesday.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “The doctor at the NYSC camp’s clinic immediately referred her to the state-owned Diette-Koki Memorial Hospital in the Opolo area of Yenagoa, the state capital, where she was confirmed dead.”

Politics / Why I Didn't Recognise Tinubu During My Victory Speech - Akeredolu by Opeedo(m): 4:15am On Dec 01, 2016
The Ondo State governor-elect, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, on Wednesday, has explained the reason why he failed to acknoledge Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in his victory speech on Sunday.

He said having acknowledged President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the recognised national leader of the party, and the National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, it was not expedient to recognise Tinubu

Akeredolu disclosed this while responding to questions from State House correspondents’ questions after he and his deputy, Mr. Agboola Ajayi, met Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

They were led to the meeting, which was their first after their victory, by the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Campaign Council in Ondo State, Governor Simon Lalong.

The governor-elect, who said the relationship between him and Tinubu was cordial, explained that mentioning the name of the former Lagos State governor specifically would have amounted to him mentioning the names of about 37 other leaders of the party.

He said, “On the names that were mentioned in my speech when expressing gratitude and that I didn’t specifically thank Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I thanked the President and the leader of our party profusely for the leadership which he showed leading to this election.

“I also thanked our indefatigable chairman for standing by the truth and for his position on this matter that led to this election. I have no reason to do otherwise.

“Party structure, to the best of my knowledge, is very clear. You have the leadership of the party and that is represented by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

“After an election, a chief executive emerges, he becomes a leader of the party, you don’t have to personalise and be looking for leaders all over the place.

“If we have to do that, then I will have to mention 36 or 37 leaders. So, I believe the leadership as represented by the President covers all leaders and that tells me it would include Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it would include even Baba Akande, (Ogbonnaya) Onu, and so many leaders.

“But President Buhari is the leader of the party. So, that is my position there.”

Akeredolu, however, added that Tinubu remained one of the leaders of the party, noting that he (Tinubu) had since sent congratulatory message to him after he won the election.

“For me, as a person, I believe he is one of the leaders of the party and I don’t see any strained relationship between us. And you would observe that he has sent in his congratulatory message after the election, so what else do you expect?

“I mean all of us see this as a victory for the APC, not for Akeredolu, not for us an individual but for the party as a whole. I believe he is a member of the party. Mr. Femi Adesina had issued a release but you journalists just want to put words into our mouths,” he said.

Akeredolu also said despite his decision not to probe the administration of the outgoing governor, Olusegun Mimiko, he would not close his eyes if he stumbled upon established cases of wrongdoing in the course of carrying out his responsibilities as governor.

He explained that what he said on the matter was that he would not deliberately go out to probe Mimiko’s administration.

He said, “At the centre, the government of President Buhari said we must look back in order to move forward, he has been there for over a year now, has he instituted a probe?

“Looking back is not a probe and I maintain that I will not probe any administration. This is responsible leadership and I am elected to lead the people.

“The task ahead of us is enormous than for us to start instituting probes. My own is not to institute any probe against the last administration and that is what President Buhari has done.

“But if we find out that wrongs were committed, we have enough laws of the land to take care of people who have committed wrongs.

“As we start our work, as we go ahead, if there is any semblance of ‘Dasukigate’ in the state, the law will take its course. That is different from probing. We will follow what Mr. President is doing at the centre.”

The governor-elect also promised to implement his manifesto in line with the reality on the ground.

That, he said, did not mean that he would not deliver on all the five cardinal programmes he promised the people.

On Senator Yele Omogunwa who left the PDP for the APC, Akeredolu said the lawmaker had joined his campaign trail and that he only formalised his defection on the Senate floor on Wednesday.

He said it would have been wrong for the lawmaker to remain in a factionalised party like the PDP.

Lalong had earlier said that he was in the Presidential Villa to present the governor-elect and his deputy to the President.

He said he would also be visiting the national headquarters of the APC to do the same thing to party leaders.

The governor-elect again said the APC was not responsible for the confusion over the candidacy of the PDP ahead of the election.

He said, “It was not the APC that went to court neither was it the APC that gave the judgment, all we saw was friction or conflict between the PDP and the PDP.

“If that judgment was going to help the APC, so be it. But we were not parties to the case for somebody to even assume that the APC was responsible for denying somebody.

“The APC is not the court; the court is a separate arm. I am saying that as far as we are concerned, the APC was not responsible for denying anybody the right to contest that election.”

Meanwhile, Akeredolu on Wednesday pledged his loyalty to Odigie-Oyegun, whom he said he owed a debt of gratitude.

Akeredolu said this at the APC national headquarters, Abuja, where he presented his certificate of return to the leadership of the party.

Akeredolu also promised to work towards ensuring that the party repeats the same feat during the next governorship election in neighbouring Ekiti State.

He said, “I owe you, my national chairman, a lot. You have done well, I will be loyal. I remember during my campaigns; I said that immediately we win Ondo, we will move en mass to win Ekiti.”

Responding, Odigie-Oyegun urged the governor-elect to ensure prompt payment of outstanding workers’ salaries as soon as he resumes duty.

Odigie-Oyegun said, “People who work deserve their pay and I hope that would be your first priority.”

Politics / Concede Defeat, Jonathan Tells Eyitayo Jegede - by Opeedo(m): 11:08am On Nov 28, 2016

There is a probability that Eyitayo Jegede, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ondo sate governorship election, may show the spirit of sportsmanship and extend a congratulatory hand to the winner, Rotimi Akeredolu of the APC.

reports that Rotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was declared winner of the keenly contested election after polling 244, 842 votes to beat his closest challenger, Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 150, 380 votes.

Following the announcement of the final result, congratulatory messages have been pouring in for the governor-elect, Akeredolu from every corner.

President Muhammadu Buhari, Senate President, Bukola Saraki and many governors have felicitated with him on his emergence as the next governor of the Sunshine State.
However, sources within the party hinted our reporter that former president, Goodluck Jonathan was among the first callers of the PDP candidate, Jegede when the result was announced.

According to our source, Jonathan asked him to concede defeat in the best interest of the people, having fought hard thus far.

“Dr. Goodluck (Jonathan) was among the first persons that called him (Jegede) even before the result was announced. He pointedly told him to be a ‘gentleman’ and congratulate anybody who would eventually emerge winner.

“When the result was announced, he (Jonathan) called again and reminded him (Jegede) not to forget their earlier discussion,” the source said.
According to our source, Jegede is willing to accept defeat but some top party members in the state are still considering challenging the result in court.

“Left for Jegede, he is not desperate. He is ready to let go but his party members and sponsors are considering going to court, hence his statement that he was still studying the result”,
the source added.

Earlier, the PDP candidate had in a statement said it was too early to decide his next line of action.

He said: “it is too early to decide on what to do as a person. My party the PDP, will decide what to do. We are still consulting with those that matter so as to know the next line of action.

“I know we have won the heart of the people and I should thank our people for standing by us and for their show of love and their steadfastness.

‘We are studying the situation and in the fullness of time you will know what the position of the party is.

“The events that led to the election are known to you and I. We had 48 hours to prepare for the election. I was cleared by the court on Wednesday and had only Thursday to campaign and on Saturday I had to go for election.”

A Zimbabwean pastor, Prophet Walter Magaya, is currently trending on social media after pictures of him distributing and selling ‘anointed’ cucumbers during his church service went viral.

The report is causing a stir as cucumber has recently been “literally discovered to have many uses,” apart from being an edible fruit.

The pastor created room for criticisms as the report had it that his church members, especially the ladies, heavily patronized him.

While some called him fake for selling cucumbers in the house of God, others said “only him knows why he chose cucumber of all fruits” to distribute.

Jimoh Ibrahim has said he deliberately destabilized Governor Olusegun Mimiko through legal battles.
Former factional governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Jimoh Ibrahim, has described his legal battle to emerge as the party’s governorship candidate as a ploy to stop Governor Segun Mimiko from helping Eyitayo Jegede win the Ondo gubernatorial election.

Jimoh Ibrahim was earlier declared as the PDP candidate for the Ondo state poll by the Federal High Court.

But the Court of Appeal sacked Ibrahim as the party’s candidate and ordered that Mr. Ibrahim be replaced with Eyitayo Jegede, who belongs to the Ahmed Makarfi faction of the party.

Jimoh in a new footage which emerged on Friday, November 25, said all the legal drama that characterised the PDP in Ondo state was a plot by him to frustrate Mimiko and waste the time of Jegede.

He said: “Election will be held on Saturday. No matter what they do, it’s gone.

Meanwhile, the political tension in Ondo state has escalated following a threat by a group, the Alliance for Democracy Renewal Group (ADRG) to attack officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The group in a statement signed by the its national coordinator, Tunde Aderemi on Friday, November 25, alleged that INEC had concluded plans to manipulate the electoral process in favour of the candidate of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) – Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

According to Vanguard, it called on the people of Ondo state to protect their votes even if it entailed shedding the blood of the INEC officers, a call it said is an act of “patriotism”.

The Nigeria air force has decided to shed light on an aircraft handed to it by the presidency that crashed while taxing on a tarmac in Makurdi, Benue state capital, last week.

“The NAF has since set-up a board of officers to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the incident. The seven-man board is headed by Air-Vice Marshal Emmanuel Anebi. Details of the investigation would be communicated to the public as soon as the board concludes its assignment.”

Two aircraft were handed over to the force on October 10.
