I do business with people I never met but that depends on the background power, I order Jumia and trade gift cards too, that’s with people I never met but I still maintain my position. Not so long I tried buy iPhone 7 Plus here, dude said I should make transfer and he’ll do delivery through logistic company and blah blah, I proposed he come with the phone and I’ll pay everything it’ll cost and little extra even, he said no and continued convincing me to transfer cash to him. It could be real it could be scam but it’s not worth it
U could have just gone to meet d seller na, if d place is same city with u. Dat will have solved d mata. Most seller will never go meet buyer again, cuz many buyers have abused that privilege to misinterpret it as d seller is desperate to sell, so dey will be misbehaving when seller gets to them. Normal market protocol is na buyer dey go meet seller. Na buyer dey go market go buy something he wan buy. Sometimes it's not even safe for d seller. D Android phone am using to type, I bought it as a used phone but not from computer village. Bought it from a direct seller from an advert I saw online. D seller said his location is Badore side for Island, but me I dey for Bariga, Mainland. So I respectfully pleaded with him we should meet around Law School, dat Badore side is too far for me, considering transport fare cost to lessen d amount for myself. Dat am coming from d mainland, from Sango Ota (LMAO, I tell small lie oh, to add salt and sugar and pepper to sweet d story, may he fit consider me na grin), so him sef cum reason am, he agreed. Later he called and said we should meet around 1004 instead. No problem. I went there. Only problem was he didn't keep to time as expected, I begged d taxi pipu and sat with them like 1 hour plus before d guy show up. Den seller came, I took my time to check d phone, we discuss well, phone was ok. I did transfer. And daz d only advice I can give pipu that buy used phone things, pay thru transfer not cash. D transfer transaction will serve as evidence of payment to seller and for documentation purpose. Put d name of d item u are paying for as ur transfer description. Simple tin. But used phones are risky, never rush to buy, take ur time to interview d seller. If d seller is rushing you to pay and leave, den walk away. Never rush tins. I'm speaking from experience here. If d sella wanna do fast fast and leave and doesn't want u to check it well or discuss with him, den jux tell him u guys should fix anoda time wen he will be less busy and if he dey do somehow give u negative attitude, juz walk away. There's a 95% chance u juz saved ursef from problem. If possible, if u can afford it, buy new phones to avoid any possible error. But if ur on a budget or don't wanna spend much and u choose to buy a used phone, den take ur time, so u don't buy a stolen phone etc. One time ago when I learned dis lesson was wen I bought an iPhone 5 at Maryland. D guy said we should meet there. Wen I got der, naso he jus dey rush me, dey rush say him get urgent place to go. Mumu me sef come fall, i no have d chance to check d phone well. He bring d phone come on 1% battery, before I press d done, he die. I want may we find place charge am, but d guy no carry cable come, no charging place for dat Maryland bus stop, I waka small I no see. I ask dem for Mobil station, d guys der say dem no get iPhone charger. D guy cum dey hurry say him get urgent appointment, say make I trust him, d phone is perfect etc. So I cum just carry am by blind fate, say d guy looks decent, as in na corporate butter boy look d guy show up with. So me I juz reason am say na all dis Ikeja big man pikin. So I didn't check d phone well. I cum do transfer. N35k. We bye bye awasef. Wen I cum reach. na him I cum dey check d phone, omo d ba3 was gone, d fingerprint not working. And i ask d guy oh, b4 I pay, the guy promise heaven an earth day dos tins are working. So my head cum dey spark, I wan call am para say d phone wey he sell to me say fingerprint no work, battery is dead, I no suppose to pay pass 25k for d fone. Mehnnn, I call d guy number tire, I call am sote from full bar, d phone ba3 run down finish, on top all dis normal 3310 kind of phone wey dia ba3 fit last 3 days oh grin, I call d guy tire, my hand dey pain me. D number not going again. Till today grin. D guy don jaappaaa grin. Later I cum dey reason am say what if na stolen phone he sell give me, na so I go take my hand buy problem in d name of rush rush. Since dat time, I no dey rush again. And I remember how d idiot was begging not to do transfer, dat I should withdraw and pay by cash, but I no gree. I tell am say I no get ATM. Na transfer I do. So I now understand why he wanted me to pay by cash, so there won't be any concrete evidence of payment to him. May God continue to save us wey dey buy used phones grin

the mata tire me o and to think the username has been on nairaland for more than 4yrs still baffles me
Daz d mistake some people make here. They believe that once a profile account here is old like 2010, 2009, 2012 etc, the person automatically is genuine. I just laugh. That's a very flawed logic. Some scammers here have been around for years and they opened several accounts that they run and operate. When one gets caught they switch to the next old account. So does that make them pure? I have an old account on Nairaland, maybe like 2010 or something can't remember but I can't use the account because I don't remember the password and I don't remember the email I used to open it. It was an old email that I don't use again and lost the info. So I have to create new account. Me I am very passionate about nation building and development etc, so I talk in politics section a lot. And many times, here when u speak ur mind, before u know it, they serve u a long ban like 30 years etc. So d account automatically is gone b dat. Even this Openbusiness account wey I dey take hustle my market here, dey have ban like 3 of d accounts permanently. Openbusiness, then 1,2,3,4,5 etc. Na cuz of ban na wey dem oversabi biased mods dey drop whenever u speak a truth dat exposes d politcal corruption and ineptitude in dis country. Dem don ban me reach account number 4 grin, now me I juz kukuma dey try avoid too much politcal talk, before dem ban me reach account 2 million grin. But I try to maintain openbusiness, so dat pipu can still know na me,.and also use d same goods and phone number in my profile. But bottom line is that an account is new doesn't mean d profile is a scammer profile. Every account was once new here. So no big deal in dat. But every malam to his kettle. If dat is a criteria that you choose to scrutinize who is real or scam, then good luck to the person when he gets scammed by an account that reads 2008 grin

You sent money to an unknown person you never met before, Jesus!!! People get mind sha
That's not a pre-condition for honesty or integrity. Aside from West Africa, I never step my foot on any abroad country before in my life. All d goods I sell, all of them are from abroad, all the sellers I buy from, none of them have I met before, all my shipping agents abroad wey dey help me coordinate the shipment and send thru consolidation, I have never met any of them before in my life, d one wey I used d most, it's just around this year April that I'm seeing his picture for the first time since 2 years wey me and am don dey deal. D clearing agent I use in Ajao estate here in Lagos, I have never met him before one on one, since over 2 years now. I only know his face by WhatsApp pix and we chat anytime I have work for him. I have only been to his office at Ajao once, d first time I gave dem job to clear and it was d secretary and accountant I met and only once. But they are all people of integrity. The clearing agent here, I no dey even use my details as consignee, na him name and info I dey use as consignee direct from abroad on d airway bill lading. Till today, one goods never miss before. So d issue is not about whether meeting before or not. The issue is about integrity, and how well d buyer does his due diligence to ensure that he is dealing with a honest person. But sometimes for certain transactions, it pays to make physical contact. Like me now, I will advise d customer to come over and do cash and carry. See what u buying and do transfer, simple. If u can't come, send your dispatch to come, see, pay and pick up for you. Simple. Everybody is safe and everyone is happy. Not d one someone will say I should do pay on delivery to lure me to somewhere he will break my neck and steal d goods. There's a time someone I knew said his friend that wanted to sell his apple MacBook laptop, d buyers that came were armed robbers. He drove to meet them. When he got there. They enter his car, he gave them laptop to check, from there, they bring out gun sad, dey cum rob am of d laptop, collect him watch and other valuables and d cash on him. They tell him if he try anything funny dey will shoot him dead. Na so Dem rob am escape. So it goes both ways. A seller too must be careful too, some so-called buyers are thieves and scammers too. Some will do fake transfer. if u don't believe me, ask any market seller and let them share their experiences of people trying to scam or swindle them. Some sellers don't do pay on delivery again cuz of bad experience of scam buyers. So a genuine buyer and seller must be sharp to avoid the evil people out there.
