A 40-year-old house wife, Iswat Taofeek, has confessed to the police in Ogun State that she burnt a12-year-old boy with a hot knife when she could not locate a sum of N5,000 she kept at home. The woman, a resident of 36, Isoka Kugba, Abeokuta has been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for dehumanizing the boy, who lives with her. The World Bank has said Nigeria’s per capital income could fall to its lowest level in 40 years this year. The Country Director for Nigeria, Mr Shubham Chaudhuri, noted that the decline in crude oil prices had dramatically impacted government finances, the balance of payments and remittances from Nigerians living abroad. Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered that Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) be remanded in Kuje correctional centre following his failure to produce a former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Rasheed Maina, who is believed to have jumped bail. Justice Okon Abang ordered Ndume’s remand while ruling on an oral application made to the effect by lawyer to the prosecution in the ongoing money laundering trial of Maina and a firm – Common Input Property and Investment Limited. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has faulted the move by the Nigerian government to commence importation of fuel from Niger Republic. HURIWA said the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Niger Republic for importation of fuel stands condemned. Recall that the Nigerian Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Silva and his counterpart from Niger Republic, Foumakoye Gado had confirmed Nigeria’s interest to import fuel from the Soraz Refinery in Zinder in Niger Republic. The Federal Government has said the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is not exempted from enrolling on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) platform. Recall that Nigeria entered its first recession in 29 years in 2016 but exited it in the second quarter of 2017. Cumulatively, the economy has contracted by -2.48 per cent in the first nine months of 2020. NBS noted further that although the third quarter performance was an improvement of 2.48 percentage points over the –6.10 per cent growth of Q2 2020, it also indicated that two consecutive quarters of negative growth have been recorded in 2020. Furthermore, growth in Q3 2020 was slower by 5.90 percentage points when compared to the third quarter of 2019 which recorded a real growth rate of 2.28 per cent year on year.
