Jarus: With 182 league games with no goals and an unflattering record of assists that can still be counted with two hands, John Obi Mikel is probably one of the most divisive players in Chelsea Football Club right now. His critics point out that he is a slow, uncreative and a waste of space. His supporters, on the other hand, praise his defensive discipline and selflessness to the team.

For eight years now, John Obi Mikel is part of a select crop of players who have remained in the first team despite the ever changing number of managers that enter through the club’s revolving doors. In all of those eight years, the Nigerian featured heavily in the club’s ventures and has managed to find a place for himself in every manager’s game plan, much to the delight or derision of Chelsea supporters worldwide. Now in 2013, Mikel is once again back at full circle, under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho, the man who brought the Nigerian to the club in the first place. However, news of an impending departure of the Nigerian from the club have been dominating headlines in recent weeks.

“I have a four-year contract with Chelsea, but you know, in football you can never guess, one day you are here, the next day you might leave,” said Mikel as he told Sky Sports most recently. This quote perhaps shows the Nigerian’s uncertainty with his future under Mourinho or a lingering though of moving to pastures anew.

Havilah93: Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has asked for total concentration from his players ahead of their final African Nations Championships (CHAN) qualifier against Cote D’Ivoire in Abidjan on July 27. He noted that the match will be like war against their West African neighbours.
Nigeria won the first leg in Kaduna 4-1 and need to avoid defeat by more than three goals in order to qualify for their first participation in the competition that will hold in South Africa next year. The team commenced training on Tuesday at the artificial pitch of the Fifa Goal Project site in Abuja with 23 players as Sunshine Stars captain Godfrey Oboabona was exempted due to his exertions at club. It was reported last week that the defender suffered a slight injury when he was mobbed by fans in Owo during training.


“The win in Kaduna is history and if you have been following the media you will see that they have been making remarks that they can also beat us well. We must be ready for their antics and forget the past,” said Keshi.

Keshi has invited four new players, including one defender, one midfielder and two strikers, in line with a pledge to inject a few new faces following last Saturday’s opening leg win at the Ahmadu
Bello Stadium, Kaduna.
The new faces are Kwara United defender Ganiyu Ogungbe, Kano Pillars midfielder Rabiu Mohammed, and strikers Abdullahi Gero of Enugu Rangers and Osadinye Joseph of Warri Wolves.

Two-goal hero Sunday Mba tops the list that also includes goalkeeper and skipper Chigozie Agbim, defenders Godfrey Oboabona, Azubuike Egwuekwe and Chibuzor Okonkwo, as well as
midfielders Olufemi Oladapo and Ayo Saka, and forwards Muhammad Gambo, Ifeanyi Edeh and Dele Olorundare.

Tony Spike: Lately, there have been an upsurge in cult-related activities in different tertiary institutions, as well as, notable towns and cities. Within the last one week, there have been cult strikes at Ilorin (Kwara), Okada Town (Edo) and now, Enugu. Are we gradually sliding back to the dark era of cultism and general lawlessness?

Traders and customers at Artisan Market in Enugu on Sunday fled different directions when three men suspected to be cultists shot dead an unidentified man inside the market.

Students living close to the market told our correspondent that the victim, believed to be a student of Enugu State University of Technology, might have been killed by rival cult members.

It was learnt that seven students had been killed since Friday when the hoodlums went on a killing spree.

An undergraduate of the university was said to be among those killed in the city.

It was learnt that the deceased was trailed by his killers to Achara Layout and shot him.

An eyewitness said the boys who killed him called him on the telephone, and as soon as he picked the call, they fired shots at him.

The source said, “They came on a motorbike and parked at a distance. The deceased was drinking at joint and a call came into his phone; as soon as he stepped out to answer the call his assailants shot at him.

“I think they made the call to ensure that he was the one; as soon as he picked the call they shot him in the stomach. When he fell down, they came close and shot him twice on the head and he died instantly.”

Another man was shot dead inside his shop on Ogui Road and those who killed him fled the scene on a motorbike.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said, “We are on top of the situation. We are working to ensure that we stop these cult-related killings. We would soon speak to the press."
