What would have been termed a reprisal attack was averted after men of the Nigeria Police Force from the Divisional Headquarters in Ohafia LGA tried to arrest a popular hunter fundly called CROSSKAR (Kalu NNoke Obuba) who hails from Amaekpu Ohafia in Ohafia LGA of Abia State, who was initially accused of being involved in the possession of unlicensed arm. It was later gathered that the hunter was proven innocent and was freed immediately, but due to how he was manhandled yesterday night, the hunter was reportedly slumped and died this morning for series of injuries mated on him. Due to the the popularity of this hunter, the youths took to their street to protest his untimely death and went to the Divisional Police Station in Ohafia LGA, but for the quick intervention of the men of the Armed Forces from 14 Brigade in Ebem Ohafia, peace was able to be restored as the Military men pleaded that they came for peace. It was gathered that the people from Amaekpu Ohafia have earlier engaged the Army with a fight in two separate occasions, leading to the destruction of lives and properties due to series of harassment and rape from the military men, they were able to negotiate with peace. Goodnight Crosskar, Mr. Targeter.

Oyo State House of Assembly on Thursday passed a bill banning smoking in public places in the state. The “Bill to Regulate Smoking in Public Places and for Connected Purposes’’ also provides three to six months imprisonment or fine of between N15, 000 and N50, 000 for offenders. The bill was sponsored by Mr Segun Ajanaku and Mr Segun Olaleye, representing Ibadan South-West II and Ibadan North II constituencies, respectively. Supporting the passage of the bill, the Chairman of the assembly’s Committee on Health, Mr Silas Okunola, said that the bill was necessary for regulating smoking in designated places, include shopping centres, restaurants, public toilets and cinemas. Other areas covered by the proposed law are hospitals, creches, schools and public transportation vehicles within the state. Specifically, the bill stipulates fine of N15, 000 or three month imprisonment or both for first time offenders while any person guilty of repeated act would be liable to a N50, 000 fine or six months imprisonment or both. It also stipulates that any person found guilty of smoking in the presence of a child in a manner that exposes smoke to be injurious to the child, would be liable to a month imprisonment with an option of N15, 000 or both. The bill states that any person who repeatedly violates the provision of not smoking in the presence of a child will be liable to one year imprisonment with an option of not less than N100, 000 or both. It makes it compulsory for any person involved with the management of a public place to put a ‘No-Smoking’ sign in conspicuous areas. It states that refusal to place the sign or symbol by a corporate body, director, manager, company secretary or any person concerned in the management of the corporate body will be liable to N250, 000 fine upon conviction. According to the provisions of the bill, any person found guilty of not putting up a ‘No-Smoking’ sign would be liable to six months imprisonment or N100,000 or other non-custodial punishment that the court may deem fit. In another development, the lawmakers called on relevant government agencies and departments to investigate the incidence of earth tremor experienced in Saki West constituency. They made the call following a motion by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Musah Abdulwasi, brought under Matters of Urgent Public Importance. According to Abdulwasi, Saki town has been experiencing cases of tremor in its communities around Medina, Abimbola and Veterinary areas. He said that the tremor occurred in the affected area as often as three days intervals. “A tremor ordinarily precedes an earthquake. Unless urgent steps are taken, the affected communities will continue to live in a state of apprehension, anxiety and insecurity and it will affect the quality of life of the residents,” he said. A former president of Chad, Hissene Habre has been sentenced to life imprisonment – His case was heard by the Extraordinary African Chambers (CAE) court, a special tribunal set up by the African Union under a deal with Senegal – Witnesses recounted the horror of life in Chad’s prisons, describing how they were maltreated by Habre’s feared secret police – The verdict brings a long-awaited reckoning to families of the up to 40,000 people killed, kidnapped, raped or tortured under his 1982-1990 rule as president – Amnesty International said the verdict would serve as a guiding light for those living in repressive regimes around the world The former president of Chad, Hissene Habre has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Extraordinary African Chambers set up by Senegal, after he was found guilty of crimes against humanity, rape and sexual slavery. Habre, whose trial for crimes against humanity took place in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, was sentenced on Monday, May 30, BBC reports. It marks the first time that the court created by the African Union has tried a former leader for human rights abuses. He was president from 1982 to 1990, and fled to Senegal when he was overthrown. It’s been 11 years since a court in Belgium issued a warrant for him and 26 years since he fled Chad. His victims expressed satisfaction over verdict, saying it was a historic day for Chad and for Africa. “It is the first time that an African head of state has been found guilty in another African country. This will be a lesson to other dictators in Africa who are still there and impose dictatorship,” one of the victims said. On her part, his wife, Fatim Raymonde Habre described the trial as unfair, saying, “a trial that is not worthy of the rule of law. There were no defence witnesses and no investigation. And today it was so miserable when I heard the judge speaking. I did not see a solid legal argument worthy of justice.” Amnesty International has called for a trust fund for victims of convicted war criminal Hissene Habre to be set up “without delay”. Reacting to Habre’s conviction, the US secretary of state, John Kerry said it was a landmark ruling. “As a country committed to the respect for human rights and the pursuit of justice, this is also an opportunity for the United States to reflect on, and learn from, our own connection with past events in Chad,” he said. Others have also been reacting to Habre’s sentence, likening the situation to that of Nigeria where the military harass and kill innocent civilians.
