Crime / EFCC Arrests 87 Forex Dealers In Abuja, Lagos by originalmining: 11:44am On Nov 03, 2022
In continuation of its onslaught against forex dealers over the current dollar crisis in the country, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday arrested no fewer than 87 forex dealers in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Lagos and Kano.

Findings by The PUNCH revealed that the EFCC detectives stormed several forex trading hubs in Abuja, ransacking their vaults for stash of dollars and naira.

The operatives later arrested no fewer than 25 legal and illegal forex dealers in addition to the 40 arrested on Tuesday during a raid of the Zone 4 Wuse offices of the Association of Bureau de Change Operators, bringing the number of arrests in the Federal Capital Territory to 65.

During the operation, the EFCC personnel were said to have seized the phones of those that were arrested.

The anti-graft agency also nabbed about 14 forex dealers in Lagos on Wednesday while eight others were picked up at the famous Bureau de Change market located at Wapa in Kano metropolis.

The development came barely 24 hours after operatives of the anti-graft commission arrested the Kogi State House of Assembly candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Ismaila Atumeyi, with N326m and $140,500 cash.

Atumeyi, who is seeking to represent Ankpa 11 Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, was arrested on Sunday, October 30, 2022 alongside one Joshua Dominic, an alleged serial fraudster in a sting operation at Macedonia Street, Queens Estate, Karsana, Gwarinpa, Abuja.
Politics / APC Plans To Buy Pvcs, Kano NNPP Alleges [photo] by originalmining: 2:37pm On Sep 19, 2022
The New Nigeria Peoples Party in Kano State has allegedly uncovered plans by the ruling All Progressives Congress to reduce the number of people having Permanent Voter Cards in the state by luring and seizing the cards from their original owners with the purpose of disenfranchising the owners.

This is just as the party noted that, for the very first time in the history of governance in Kano State, the incumbent has turned government affairs into a family affair, as, according to the NNPP, evidently seen in government policies and appointments.

The party alleged that it is more worrisome, sad and disastrous that the “anointed APC governorship” candidate has sworn by the Holy Qur’an to continue with these uninterrupted destruction of Kano State.

The party made these allegations in a communiqué issued at the end of a sensitisation workshop organised by the party for its governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives, state house of assemblies’ candidates and party executives held on September 15 in Kano.

The communiqué said it was a pointer to the state government’s abandonment of its primary responsibilities of protecting lives and properties of the citizens by being myopic and driven by sentiments, emotions, vendetta, and self-enrichment.

According to the communiqué jointly signed by the workshop chairman, Garba Diso, and secretary, Hamisu Ali, the workshop called for quick solutions to the threat of disenfranchisement and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to, as a matter of urgency, publish and paste the names of all uncollected PVCs in order to create awareness for the rightful owners to claim them.

“Among other issues highlighted by the workshop were the destruction of the educational system following the closure and de-boarding of Unity Schools; non-payment of all examination fees by the state government to WAEC, NECO, and NBAIS; delayed and non-payment of scholarship allowances to foreign and local students; and the creation of non-educationally friendly environment within school premises through the construction of corner shops in schools like the Northwest University, Kano,’’ the communique said.

The communique noted that Kano State is now one of the leading states in terms of drug abuse and thuggery under the watch of Governor Umar Ganduje and his administration, adding that the Kiru Rehabilitation Centre, which was established by the Kwankwaso’s administration for drug abuse, has since been closed down by Ganduje’s administration.

Another disturbing issue raised by the workshop is that of land-grabbing and dubious allocations and selling of land to intentionally deface Kano State. It stated that despite the mechanisms put in place by the previous administrations to control illegal and sub-standard buildings, the government of Governor Ganduje intentionally allowed these illegal practices with government approval, which have resulted in flooding, building collapse and even death.

It, therefore, expressed utmost concern over the flooding and collapse of buildings that occurred recently at Kantin Kwari and Civic Centre markets respectively which led to loss of lives and properties, among others, just as it extended its profound condolences and sympathy to all those affected by the disaster “on behalf of the national leader/presidential candidate of the party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, the state executives, the party governorship (candidate) and his running mate, Senatorial, House of Representatives, and State Assembly candidates.’’

The workshop declared total support of the NNPP’s position in the state, reiterating that the 2023 elections must be completely different from previous ones, adding that the party will do all it can within the ambit of law to ensure that the 2023 elections are free, fair and credible.

Sports / How Man United Can Defeat Arsenal – Rooney by originalmining: 12:03pm On Sep 04, 2022
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed what the game plan should be from Erik Ten Hag’s side if they are to triumph over Arsenal when both teams clash on Sunday.

Arsenal have enjoyed a perfect start to the Premier League season, scooping five wins from five, and are poised to extend their lead at the top of the table to four points with a win against Man United.

Although many have questioned their chances of longevity at the top, the game against United will test their resolve to push for a title challenge this season.

Rooney, while writing on his weekly column for The Times, said he expects a tight game like the fixture used to spring up in the past, adding that United will need to bring some push into the game.

He said that pressing aggressive and catching Arsenal on the break should be the game tactics from Ten Haag.

He wrote, “United have a lot of quality, and if you get the basics right you give yourselves the platform for the quality to come through. That’s what we saw in victories over Liverpool, Southampton and Leicester City.

“Against this Arsenal side they’ll need the intensity they showed in those wins, especially the one against Liverpool. Their best bet may be to play like my United did in those classic games – pressing aggressively, while hitting Arsenal on the break.

“If you sit in a mid block or low block and are passive against a side who move the ball as quickly and well as Mikel Arteta’s team do, it’s a recipe for trouble

“I expect a tense, hard game, a bit like the old days – though maybe not quite as much action in the tunnel.”

He applauded Arteta for the impact he has made to the Arsenal side, highlighting the energy and quality the current Arsenal side boast.

“I really admire what Arteta is doing. He now has not just quality but energy in his side and recruited brilliantly when he signed Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko.”
Politics / Nigerians Died In 2011, 2015 Over Buhari, Jonathan, Reno Warns Supporters by originalmining: 12:34pm On Aug 30, 2022
Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has warned the Nigerian populace not to hate one another while they support their preferred presidential candidates in the warm-up for the 2023 general elections.

He gave the analogy of what happened between former President Goodluck Jonathan and incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari that a lot of Nigerians killed themselves for them, but the two are alive at peace with each other today.

Omokri said these in two tweets on his verified Twitter page on Thursday, adding that Atiku Abubakar, Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi will congratulate whoever wins among them in the presidential election.

“Don’t hate each other over politicians. If Atiku wins, he will reach out to Tinubu and Obi. Same with Tinubu and Obi, if they win. Take Buhari and Jonathan. Many people died over their 2011 election. More died in 2015. Today, are they not at peace with each other?

“The worst thing you can do is hate each other because you are an Obidient and your neighbour is Atikulated, while your colleague is Battified.

“As this photo shows, those on whose behalf you are hating, don’t hate themselves on your behalf! Relate and do not hate!” Omokri said.

Recently, Tinubu, Atiku and Obi of the All Progressives Congress, APC; the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Labour Party, LP, respectively, have become popular for politicking on social media due to engagement with, and discussions among their supporters.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the embargo on campaigns by political parties for presidential candidates will be lifted on September 28, 2022.

Education / What I Mean By ‘you Can’t Defeat Biafra’ – Soyinka by originalmining: 3:56pm On Aug 28, 2022
Professor Wole Soyinka has explained that people misunderstood him when he said “you can never defeat Biafra”, noting that it was simplistic to think he was referring to the battlefield.

The Nobel laureate made the clarification in an interview on Channels TV, while responding to a question on the Civil War, agitators and history.

According to Soyinka, he “was very desperate for that (the war) not to happen. First, I thought it was a wrong war. No war is right, but this one was particularly bad.”

On his misunderstood comment on Biafra, the legendary dramatist and activist said: “The Igbo, no question at all, underwent the experience of genocide.

“The memory of such traumatising experience congeals, especially towards their immediacy but it can burst out again any other time.

“When I made a statement that ‘you can never defeat Biafra’, people took a very simplistic reasoning of that. They thought I was just referring to the battlefield.

“No, I was talking about the idea; that the idea has taken hold of some of those who don’t know the full history, because the people were not themselves blameless.

“When I met Ojukwu, he spoke very frankly and when I met him in Ivory Coast, I asked him some questions like ‘why did you shoot Victor Banjo and others?’.

“He gave some very satisfactory answers. I met him again when I did a programme for BBC Channel 4 entitled ‘Journeys’, and I did recapture the journey to Biafra.

“I interviewed (former head of state during Civil War) Gowon, Ojukwu, Achuzie and all those who were involved in the war.

“These were reminders and it is a lesson of the past. If history is inculcated in schools, you won’t have people talking so glibly about the possibility of another war.

“You will have more people inclined to dialogue. There are individuals who have hands across different parts of the country.

“These are people who are history conscious; retired General Ike Nwachukwu, Dr Ezeife and so many others are history conscious. So, they don’t want to see errors take place.

“There is the necessity not just to teach history in schools, but also to make it part and parcel of our civic consciousness in numerous ways.

“I think that even the cinema has a role to play in this regard.”

Politics / What I’ll Do After Winning 2023 Presidential Election – Peter Obi by originalmining: 12:16am On Aug 27, 2022
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has reiterated that he will reduce insecurity and poverty if he emerges the winner of the 2023 presidential election to rule Nigeria.

The former Anambra governor disclosed that he expects to accomplish this by using job creation and reformative investments as mechanisms. He also said he will shift the nation’s economy from consumptive to productive mode.

Obi revealed these in a series of tweets on his verified Twitter page on Thursday following a summit his party organized with Nigerian youths.

He tweeted, “After we win the 2023 elections, we intend to use the instruments of job creation and regenerative investments to drastically reduce the high incidence of insecurity and poverty, while moving the economy from the consumptive to the productive mode.

“Undoubtedly, the greatest challenge we face beyond bad leadership, is lack of elite consensus. But, let us not forget Dante Alighieri‘s admonition, that ‘The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.’”

Obi also noted that history is germane in decision making, saying that the division of Nigeria must be prevented by making the right decision at the polls. He also said criminality surrounding oil subsidy will be terminated if he becomes president.

“History must serve as a tool in our decision making. The implosion of Nigeria has long been forecasted. Year 2023 could be a tipping point in the annals of our history. But that must not happen, even as the options before the electorate seem stark.

“Going forward, we must look for ways to move Nigeria beyond oil. We must end this criminality called ‘oil subsidy.’ Nigeria today is vastly polarized and wrecked by divisions that run deep along religious, ethnic and regional lines,” Obi added.

The former governor who has been widely criticized for lacking structures to help him win the election said, “Finally, our structure is everyone seated in this hall today! Yes, we have structure, and we are ready to move mountains to save Nigeria.”

Politics / Ahmed Zainab: FG Spends ₦18.397 Billion On Petrol Subsidy Daily by originalmining: 8:03pm On Aug 18, 2022
The House of Representatives’ Ad Hoc Committee to Investigate the Petroleum Products Subsidy Regime from 2013 to 2022, on Thursday, grilled the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, over payments of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) by the Federal Government.

Ahmed disclosed that the government spends N283 per litre of PMS or N18.397bn per day as subsidy.

She said, “For 2023, the projection is that the average daily truck out will be N64.96 million litres per day; that is about 65 million per day, using an average rate at open market rate of N448.20k and then a regulator pump price of N165 per litre. This gives us an average under-recovery, that is the difference between N165 and N448 of N283.2k.

“So, just multiply the amount of litre per day, the open market exchange rate of naira to the dollar and then, the gap between the pump price and open market price, the total amount of subsidy per day is N18.397bn.

“So, if you are projecting for the full year, from January to December, it will be N6.715tn. If you are projecting for half a year, it will be 50 per cent of that, 3.375tn. I said earlier in the recommendations that we sent to parliament for consideration on MTEF is half-year, that will be N3.357tn.”

The minister stated, “Fuel subsidy is the difference between the pump price which is now fixed at N165 (per litre) and the landing cost which we are projecting at an average of N448 per litre in 2023. Even now, the cost is around that.

“So, the PMS subsidy we are carrying today in the nation is around N283 per litre; that is what we are carrying. So, it is the difference between the pump price and the landing cost of petroleum products in the country.”

Business / Emirates Suspends Flights To Nigeria From September by originalmining: 10:42am On Aug 18, 2022
Emirates Airlines on Thursday announced the suspension of its flight operations in Nigeria from September 1, 2022.

It said the suspension became necessary following its inability to repatriate its funds from Nigeria.

International carriers operating in Nigeria have repeatedly complained about their inability to repatriate funds to their home countries.

They have raised this concern on many occasions with officials of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, as well as those at the finance ministry.

Blocked funds belonging to these airlines have risen to about $600m, as this is due to the inability of the Central Bank of Nigeria to make the United States dollar available for the carriers to repatriate.

In its statement on Thursday, Emirates Airlines stated that it “has tried every avenue to address our ongoing challenges in repatriating funds from Nigeria, and we have made considerable efforts to initiate dialogue with the relevant authorities for their urgent intervention to help find a viable solution.”

It added, “Regrettably there has been no progress. Therefore, Emirates has taken the difficult decision to suspend all flights to and from Nigeria, effective September 1, 2022, to limit further losses and impact on our operational costs that continue to accumulate in the market.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to our customers, however, the circumstances are beyond our control at this stage. We will be working to help impacted customers make alternative travel arrangements wherever possible.”

It, however, noted that should there be any positive developments in the coming days regarding Emirates’ blocked funds in Nigeria, the airline would, of course, re-evaluate its decision.

“We remain keen to serve Nigeria, and our operations provide much-needed connectivity for Nigerian travellers, providing access to trade and tourism opportunities to Dubai, and to our broader network of over 130 destinations,” the global carrier stated.

Politics / Obi Will Redraw Nigeria’s Political Map — Support Group by originalmining: 1:26pm On Aug 17, 2022
With his closed-door meeting with some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, would redraw the political map of the country in line with the national interest, the Peter Obi Support Network said on Tuesday.

Obi had several meetings with the PDP leaders, including Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and other key stakeholders of the party as preparations for the 2023 election thickens.

The POSN Director of Strategic Communication, Onwuasoanya Jones, in a statement, praised Obi “for building bridges of understanding beyond partisan leanings.”

He said, “The visit is part of the steps being taken by the former governor of Anambra State to redraw the political map of the country, in line with the people’s interest.

“I can confirm to you that there are key members of the PDP and the All Progressives Congress who are major supporters of the New Nigeria project as being piloted by Peter Obi. I will not give you names, but I can assure you that strategic discussions are ongoing among Nigerian patriots across party divides to rescue Nigeria from an imminent collapse, and there is already a consensus among every patriotic Nigerian that Peter Obi is the vehicle to actualise this goal.”

According to him, Nigerians should not expect any quick conclusion to the ongoing consultations, “as some of the discussions would continue until few days to the election.

Jones said, “Nigerians should rest assured that all those who truly have the interest of the country at heart and really want her to be rescued from the grip of bad governance are uniting behind the Obi candidacy, and these people come from different political parties and regions of the country.

“Obi is redrawing the Nigerian political map around patriotism, rather than partisanship. This is no time for political correctness but a time for patriotic sacrifice for the survival of our country. And it is gladdening that Peter Obi is found worthy by many Nigerians to lead this peaceful revolution for the rebirth of our nation.”

The Kwara State Police Command has said that it recovered four corpses from the scene of the clash between members of the Oodua Peoples Congress and Fulani people in Ajase-Ipo, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state on Friday.

The police, in a statement issued late Friday, and signed by the Command’s Spokesperson, Ajayi Okasanmi, said the clash was as a result of misunderstanding between members of the OPC and the cattle dealers in Kaara market, Ajase-Ipo, Friday evening.

Scores of people from both the OPC and the Fulani cattle dealers as well as passersby were injured while some vehicles including commercial buses and cars had their windscreen shattered in the clash.

Sports / 2023 Africa Cup Of Nations Moved To 2024 by originalmining: 9:30pm On Jul 04, 2022
The next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be played in Côte d’Ivoire in 2024, and not 2023, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe, announced yesterday.

The tournament was to be hosted in June-July 2023, which is the height of the rainy season in Côte d’Ivoire.

“We cannot take the risk,” the South African said in the Moroccan capital Rabat where the women’s AFCON began on Saturday.

With the World Cup in Qatar taking place between November and December this year, the decision has been taken to postpone the finals rather than bring them forward.

It means the Nations Cup will be held in January and February for the second time in a row, after this year’s tournament in Cameroon.

In 2017, CAF announced that it would move the finals from their traditional January-February slot to June-July in a bid to avoid repeated disputes with European clubs forced to release players in the middle of the season.

“January is not the ideal time because of the European clubs, but it is the only choice we have,” Motsepe added.

Under former CAF President Issa Hayatou, who was removed from office in 2017, African football’s ruling body refused to countenance any possible change of date for the months the continent’s flagship sports event is hosted.

Yet just four months after taking charge, Hayatou’s successor – Ahmad of Madagascar – turned this policy on its head following consultation with the continent’s officials.

CAF Secretary-General, Veron Mosengo-Omba, said there are no plans to permanently move the finals back to January-February given the contrasting weather patterns across the continent at different times of the year.

The DG continued that this administration has consistently prioritised pension contributions in the annual state budget.

Obilana added: “We are happy to note that Lagos state is fully compliant with the statutory requirements of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) since its inception.

“Despite various economic and financial challenges, employee and employer contributions are remitted promptly into individual employees’ Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs) monthly.”

Speaking to newsmen, he described Lagos state as a high flyer, having received several awards for exceptional performance in the payment of retirement obligations.

He said: “LASPEC is fervently working toward the immediate payment of pension entitlements at retirement from the public service.”

The sources noted that the police promptly stepped into the situation to douse the tension by arresting the culprit and other members of the church sequel to complaints of some parents who reported the case to the police in Ondo town.

In a 40 seconds video that went viral, the children were seen in a patrol vehicle of the police who took them to the police station.

“They have kidnapped children found in the underground cell of a church in the Valentino Area of Ondo. The pastor and some members of the church have been arrested and were also in the patrol van of the police,” a voice said in the video.

Romance / Six Benefits Of Having Regular Sex With Your Spouse by originalmining: 7:55pm On Jul 01, 2022
In some climes, sex is not an open discussion; however, between partners, it ought to be an open discussion.

Do you want a glowing complexion? Do you want to boost your mood and cut your risk of cancer, heart disease and other health hazards? The answers are in between the bedsheet with your spouse.

According to Sandra Caron — sex therapist and professor of family relations and human sexuality at the University of Maine’s College of Education and Human Development in Orono — there have been lots of studies describing the health benefits of sex, most of which relate to achieving orgasm.

Here are six advantages attached to having coitus with your partner according to Everydayhealth.com.

1. Improved heart health

Just like any physical activity, healthy sex is good for your heart.

2. Relieves pain from menstrual cramps

Just looking at your partner — or even a photo of your partner — can help ease pain. So, even though you might think pain is a barrier to sex, consider this a sex benefit worth the time and effort: Take a moment to really look at your lover.

Other studies have found that women may get some relief from menstrual cramps through a good orgasm.

3. Possible reduction of prostate cancer risk

A study published in December 2016 in the journal ‘European Urology’ found that men who ejaculate more than 21 times per month were 20 per cent less likely to develop prostate cancer, compared with those who do so four to seven times per month.

4. Better sleep

According to the National Sleep Foundation, orgasms release the hormone prolactin, which can help you feel sleepy and relaxed. So, don’t be too surprised if you and your partner doze off shortly after a satisfying session and wake up feeling refreshed.

This sleep connection also works in reverse. According to a study published in May 2015 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, getting enough shut-eye can improve your sexual response and may increase the chance that you’ll engage regularly in sex.

5. Happier mood and a stronger relationship

It’s no wonder you get a more positive outlook after sex.

6. Glowing, younger-looking skin

That fabled “morning after” glow? It’s not just your imagination; you really do look better after having sex. Enjoying a healthy sex life is one of the great joys in life. Knowing intimacy could be a boon for your long-term health as well as make it that much more pleasurable.

Sports / Chelsea Target Three Big Signings From Man City (photo) by originalmining: 4:55pm On Jun 28, 2022
English Premier side Chelsea are currently in talks over the signing of three players from the reigning Manchester City.

The Blues are keen on signing the City winger and attacking midfielder, Raheem Sterling, just as the club manager Thomas Tuchel lately added full-back and City stars Oleksandr Zinchenko and defender Nathan Ake to his transfer wishlist.

Chelsea earlier in the week had already made an official approach to Manchester City for the signing of £55million-rated England international Sterling, with a view to wrapping up the deal by the end of the week.

Tuchel, who has conquered Europe with the Blues, is aiming to boost the club’s frontline ahead of the start of a new season in August.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly and Thomas Tuchel have shown keen interest, while the club is currently making official moves towards signing the trio, for a stunning triple swoop from title rivals Manchester City.

While the Ukrainian international Zinchenko is closely linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, analysts have said it may be tough to persuade Pep Guardiola’s side to release the three players to their arch-rivals in the Premier League.

Business / Nigeria’s Problems Will Be Solved By Access To Loans by originalmining: 10:17am On Jun 27, 2022
How credit will solve Nigeria’s economic problems
Nigeria has a plethora of economic problems that make any reference to its status as the giant of Africa, very laughable. Agreed, it stands tall as the most populous black nation, but also as one of the poorest, with huge inequalities, high unemployment, and poor infrastructure.

While Nigeria’s economy is one of the largest in Africa, its huge population is defined by low standard of living, a 35% unemployment rate, and a 40% poverty rate. High government corruption has seen several citizens taking matters into their own hands.

If both of you are interested in it, viewing p*rn together can bring a new level of fun and intimacy to your relationship. Here’s how to bring it up — and a few best practices to keep in mind.

P*rnography is often exclusively relegated to people’s solo sex lives — that is, they only ever watch it when they’re alone. But in addition to being a very helpful masturbation aid, viewing p*rn can be a fun erotic activity to share with a partner. The question is, how should you bring up watching porn with your wife or husband?

“P*rn, like any other erotic media, can be fun and interesting for many people. What we choose to watch or consume reflects what we find erotic and arousing,”. “And imagery in our minds — whether from viewing a video, imagining the scene we are reading in a story, or our own fantasy — engages our brain as if we are in the scene, as one of the actors or as an observer.”

He spoke on Sunday at the Men of Valour conference, organised by the Revival House of International Church (RHOGIC), Abuja.

The conference has the theme: “Navigating the corridors of power, the church, and the politics”

He was echoed by the National Secretary of the Young Peoples Party( YPP), Vidiyano Bamaiyi, who described 75 percent of politicians in Nigeria as “political bandits”.

{Update: If you're interested in making extra incomes for your self, i got a solution for you here}

Obi said only a lunatic in government would steal N80 billion of the citizens money for personal use.

He said Nigeria would continue to suffer unless these “lunatics” were flushed out and replaced with competent people at the next elections.

“We can’t allow this gangsterism to continue, Nigerians should take back their country. 70 percent of those who are in politics today should not have any reason to be there. I have said it, politics in Nigeria is a case where lunatics have taken over the asylum.

“This is the only country where the worst is leading. I was a trader and gradually entered into politics. When you take far more than you need, you are sick.

On the 2023 general elections, Obi said prayers alone could not salvage the country.
