Nairaland GeneralOscar Pistorius Sentenced To Five Years In Prison by Orina(op): 10:35am On Oct 21, 2014
Pistorius is expected to be taken to Kgosi Mampuru II prison, formerly Pretoria Central.
It’s believed he will stay in the holding cell below the court until around 4pm South Africatime (3pm BST) before being moved by police convoy, along with other prisoners, to the jail.
A Pistorius family spokesman said his sister, Aimee Pistorius, has sent his washbag and phone down to him in the holding cell.
In evidence last week, Zach Modise, acting national head of correctional services, said Pistorius should be housed in a hospital wing, rather than the general section of the prison. He will have a health assessment within six hoursof admission to the prison. This includes assessment of social, psychological and spiritual needs, and caters for different vulnerabilities, Modise told the court. That assessment determines where the prisoner is placed.
Speaking on Sky News,Nathi Mncubeof the National Prosecuting Authority, says the state team is “busy studying the case law” to see if it can appeal.
This is not what we were hoping to achieve by the end of this trial … But it is not entirely up to us.
We accept that at some point somebody has to make a decision and we respect the decision the judge has made.
An “appetite” to appeal is not enough, he says: they must meet legal requirements for an appeal
He says the prosecutors “find solace” in the custodial sentence handed down.
People might not be happy with the outcome but at the end of the day that’s what justice is all about. We are hearing that the Pistorius family will give a press conference at midday South African time (11am BST)
As he (pastorius) left the court,Barry Steenkamp, father of Reeva, told reporters he was “very satisfied” with the sentence. Asked if it was sufficient, he appeared to reply: “Yes.”

Nairaland GeneralMilitants Attack Nigerian Villages Despite Reported Boko Haram Cease-fire by Orina(op): 7:25am On Oct 19, 2014
Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed dozens of people in five attacks on Nigerian villages that occurred after the government announced a ceasefire to enable 200 abducted girls to be freed, security sources and witnesses said on Saturday.
However, the government cast doubt on whether the attacks really were Boko Haram or one of several criminal groups that are exploiting the chaos of the insurgency. A spokesman said talks to free the girls would continue in Chad on Monday.
The fresh attacks dashed hopes for an easing of the northeast's violence, although officials remained confident they can negotiate the release of girls whose abduction by the rebels in the remote northeastern town of Chibok in April caused international shock and outrage.
A presidency and another government source said they were aiming to do this by Tuesday.
Boko Haram, whose name translates roughly as "Western education is sinful," has massacred thousands in a struggle to carve an Islamic state out of religiously mixed Nigeria, whose southern half is mainly Christian in faith.
Nigeria's armed forces chief Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh announced the ceasefire on Friday. On Saturday, two senior government sources said it aims to secure the girls' release as early as Monday or Tuesday, although they declined to give further details. In the first attack, suspected insurgents attacked the village of Abadam on Friday night, killing at least one person and ransacking homes, while another assault on the village of Dzur on Saturday morning left at least eight people dead.
Three other attacks in Adamawa state on Saturday killed dozens of people, witnesses and a local politician said.
"I was just boarding a bus when the gunshots started," Adams Mishelia, who was in the adjacent town of Shaffa, said of the Dzur attack. "People were fleeing into the bush, so I got off the bus and headed to the bush too. I later learned they slaughtered eight people."
A security source confirmed that attack and the assault on Abadam the night before. Mohammed Bulama, a resident of the main northeastern city of Maiduguri, told Reuters he lost his uncle in the Abadam attack. Other casualties there were unclear.
On Saturday suspected insurgents also attacked three small towns in a local government area called Michika, Adamawa state.
"Dozens of people are been killed and houses are been burnt by the insurgents, so what is the meaning of the ceasefire government is talking about?" said Adamu Kamale, a state government lawmaker.
"DISCUSSIONS IN CHAD"
When asked about the violence, government spokesman Mike Omeri said by telephone that "the Boko Haram people have also said that some attacks are not undertaken by them." Boko Haram, seen as the biggest threat to Africa's top economy and oil producer, is believed to be divided into several factions that loosely cooperate with each other, and it is unclear with which faction the government has been negotiating.
"Discussions will continue in Chad next week, and on the basis of those discussions we'll have more details," on how the girls will be released, Omeri said.
The announcement of the truce came a day before a rally of supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja attended by his vice president, Namadi Sambo, although an expected announcement of Jonathan's candidacy for February 2015 elections did not materialize during the rally.
Officials at the presidency and military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Boko Haram has also not yet commented on the reported truce. The group's sole means of conveying messages is via videotaped speeches by a man claiming to be Abubakar Shekau, its leader whom the military last year said it had killed.
A history of abortive government attempts at truce deals with Boko Haram and military claims to have rescued some girls that proved false, mean Nigerians are likely to greet the newly reported breakthrough with skepticism.
The second government source said: "We are negotiating with considerable caution. Boko Haram has grown into such an amorphous entity that any splinter group could come up disowning the deal. http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/6008044
Nairaland GeneralGuyana Places Travel Ban On Nigeria Because Of Ebola by Orina(op): 11:13am On Oct 17, 2014
Guyana said on Thursday it has denied entry to citizens from four Ebola-hit West African nations for the past five weeks, in an effort to stop the disease from entering the small South American nation.
Guyana stopped issuing visas to citizens from Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria on Sept. 9, said Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkette.
In fact, the country may have little to worry about in the case of Nigeria.
The worst outbreak on record of Ebola has killed nearly 4,500 people, mostly in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Nigeria was affected – one traveller from Liberia triggered an outbreak in which eight people died, most of them health workers, before it could be contained.
But the most populous country in Africa was able to stop the spread. The World Health Organization said this week that Nigeria, along with Senegal, could be declared Ebola-free within days, once it completes a 42-day period with no new cases.
In addition to the visa denials in Guyana, health officials will screen anyone who traveled to those four African countries in the six weeks prior to their arrival in Guyana.
Guyanese health services are unable to test for Ebola, but around 1,600 health workers are being trained to detect cases, the government added.

Nairaland GeneralNavarro College In Texas Apologizes After Rejecting Nigerian Applicants by Orina(op): 2:07pm On Oct 16, 2014
A Texas college apologized on Tuesday for what it's calling "incorrect information" after multiple international applicants received a rejection letter saying that "Navarro College is not accepting international students from countries with confirmed Ebola cases."
Navarro, a two-year public college in Corsicana, is about 60 miles from Dallas, where two health-care workers have been diagnosed with Ebola; the most recent case was confirmed early Wednesday morning. Thomas Eric Duncan, an Ebola-stricken Liberian man who was treated at Texas Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, died last week from the illness.
The letter recipients are from Nigeria, a country that hasn't had a new Ebola case in more than 21 days. The World Health Organization is preparedto declare the Ebola outbreak over in Africa's largest country as soon as Monday.
Nigeria managed to contain the Ebola outbreakto just 20 cases, all connected to a Liberian-American air traveler who brought the virus into the country in late July.
Idris Bello, a Nigerian-American who now lives in Texas, posted Navarro College's rejection letter to Twitter earlier this week. In an e-mail, Bello told The Post that he received a copy of the letter from Kamor Abidogun, a friend of his in Houston who works as a mechanical engineer.
"He described the contents but I found it hard to believe, so I had him scan and send me a copy," Bello said.
According to Bello, Abidogun has multiple relatives who used his Texas address to apply to the college, including his brother-in-law, who lives in Nigeria.

— Idris Ayodeji Bello (@idrisayobello) October 12, 2014
Those applicants received identical letters, signed by Navarro College's international programs director, Elizabeth Pillans, as CNBC reported.
In response to media queries, the college issued a statement about the letters.
"Our college values its diverse population of international students," the statement read. "This fall we have almost 100 students from Africa. Unfortunately, some students received incorrect information regarding their applications to the institution."
The college says that it recently "restructured" its international department, with new recruitment efforts. "Our focus for 2014-15 is on China and Indonesia...We apologize for any misinformation that may have been shared with students."
The college did not respond to multiple requests for additional information from The Post.
Bello said he was "disappointed" with the college's response to the letters, adding that the issue of stigmatization he sees at play here "is not just about Nigerians, but about the bigger picture." Referring to the current Ebola outbreak in his home state, he added: "Should universities in Boston now start rejecting student applicants from Texas?"

BusinessJonathan Flags-off First Phase Of The $1bn Azura-Edo Greenfield Power Plant by Orina(op): 6:49pm On Oct 10, 2014
President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday flagged-off the first phase of the $1 billion Azura-Edo power plant, the first fully privately financed independent power plant (IPP) in the country, located in Ihovbor/Orior Odemwende communities of Edo State.

He called on communities around the country who are hosts to several federal, state and private sector projects to play their roles as there is development in partnership.

This is even as he said the Federal Government will continue to ensure that the growth of the electricity industry becomes self-sustaining and sustainable.

Speaking at the groundbreaking of the Azura-Edo independent power plant in Edo State, the president said, “I want to use this opportunity to call on all the local communities around the country who are hosts to several federal, state and even private sector projects, that have been hindered by community disruptions, to recognise that in partnership there is development and so, everyone must play their roles”.

He added, “My administration is fully committed to continuously improving the framework and enabling environment based on sound policy formulation, access to long-term low interest finance, and transparent and consistent regulatory guidelines”.

The first phase of the Azura-Edo IPP is a 450 megawatts greenfield, open cycle gas turbine power station, with a total capital cost of $735 million. It represents the first phase of a 1,500 megawatts power plant facility.

It is the first fully financed private sector power plant project. It is also the first power generation project to receive the World Bank Partial Risk Guarantee and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) support.

The IPP project, a 450-megawatt of new generation capacity, which is expected to be completed by early 2017, has attracted almost a billion dollars, mainly in foreign direct investment, into the power sector, comprised of $700 million in construction of the power plant, and $300 million in associated gas supply infrastructure.

The president said he was greatly encouraged at the progress made so far towards reforming the power sector, since the launch of the road map on power sector reform back on August 26, 2010.
He said the flag-off of the project is the first signal from the global financial industry that the years of work that the Federal Government has dedicated to the reform of the power sector, in order to attract private sector developers and financing, is finally yielding results.

According to President Jonathan, the Azura project demonstrates without a doubt, that “we have laid a strong foundation on which we are building a sound and sustainable electricity industry, with great expectations for robust growth in the sector. However, success in any endeavour does not happen by accident, but is facilitated by sound decisions, conscious effort, and immense persistence”.

He further said government is committed to irreversibly repositioning the Nigerian power sector as a pivot for the attainment of the nation’s developmental targets.

“We are also maintaining our policy push for increased diversification of our energy, expanding investments in large hydro power projects through public-private partnerships, and the provision of necessary support to accelerate the exploitation of our coal resources”, he said.

PoliticsAfrica’s Richest Presidents: Why Jonathan’s Position Is Not The Biggest News by Orina(op): 9:01pm On Oct 08, 2014
The news of Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan listed as the 6thRichest African president by a US-based websitehas been so viral in Africa’s online media it has overshadowed others in the list, even those atop him.
While the makers of the list did not reveal how they calculated the wealth of the African heads of state, that of Jonathan was pinned at $100 million. But this is only a fraction of the given sum of the President atop the list, but that president is not making the headlines as the man who runs Africa’s largest economy.
Perhaps this is because Jonathan is the President of Africa’s most populated country, and arguably the continent’s most online-active citizenry, most of which are dissatisfied with the political elite whom they perceive as “very corrupt.” Then throw in the fact that President Jonathan is famed for priding in his humble upbringing when “he had no shoes”. How he amassed such wealth, if Richest Lifestyle’s figures are to be believed, becomes the huge question given that his only known career before venturing into politics was that of an academician.
These indices however should ideally not still steal the headlines away from President Jose Eduardo dos Santos of Angola who according to the list is worth $20 billion, which is over 83 percent of the total sum of Africa’s ten richest heads of state. With Angola’s GDP at $129.785 billion, Dos Santos alone equals 15 percent of that in a country where 37 percent are classified as poor by the moderate estimate of Angolan Instituto Nacional de Estatística.
The President’s daughter, Isabel dos Santos is among Africa’s billionaires with a net worth of $3.8 billion. She’s currently in the top three bracket of Africa’s richest women.
Aside the Angolan President, another news bigger than President Jonathan’s worth is the fact that apart from the Nigerian President and Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta, none of the African leaders on that list of ten have stayed in office for less than 10 years. Jonathan, 5 years in office, and Kenyatta 1 year in office, make for a combined term of 6 years which is lower than the next lowest number of years held by Mohammed VI of Morocco who ascended to the throne 15 years ago.
The man who shares the same figure with Jonathan should also be making more headline than him. King Mswati III of Swaziland does not just have $100 million, according to the list, he also has 13 wives several of whom together spent over $6 million in a single shopping spree in 2009. It also says that Swaziland’s Parliament in its 2014 budget, allocated $61 million for the King’s annual household budget, in a country where 63 percent of Swazis live on less than $1.25 per day.
But the biggest news from the release is that the wealth of the listed African Richest Presidents even when summed is still less than that of Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote. The chairman of Africa’s largest indigenous conglomerate Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote is worth $25 billion. While that may be just 3.76 percent higher than the wealth of African heads of state, the significance of it makes the gap a lot wider. The significance – In Africa where most of the political leaders are accused of embezzling their country’s wealth, Dangote’s wealth has shown that businessmen will always sit atop the rich list. Clean and Legit business always pays better.

BusinessSteel Workers Commend FG For Reviving Ajaokuta Steel Company by Orina(op): 8:14pm On Oct 06, 2014
The workers in Ajaokuta Steel Company Ltd. on Monday, commended the Federal Government for its efforts at reviving the industry.
Mr Otori Salihu, the National President of Iron and Steel Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ISSSAN), gave the commendation at the annual leadership workshop of the association in Lokoja.
He said the recent delivery of consignment of billets to the company in preparation for resumption of production was a good development for the country and workers in the sector.
He called on all stakeholders in the steel industry, including workers, to support government efforts towards reviving the sector.
Salihu also called for a policy that would stimulate the use of local content in the sector as a means of creating jobs and sustaining steel development in the country.
He, nonetheless, called for effective implementation of good policy on the sector, insisting that the progress of the nation’s steel sector had been dragging due to failure in policy implementation.
He commended the workers of the company for their dedication to duty in spite of the numerous challenges confronting the company in the past.
He said the workshop was aimed at preparing the workers ahead of resumption of production soon.
The theme of the workshop was: “Strategic Synergy for the Development of National Metal and Steel Sector in Nigeria.’’

Benin, Togo ask for more power from Ghana.............. "Benin and Togo have made a joint request to the Ghana government to
supply them with more power, since their power situation is more desperate than Ghana’s.

“The situation in Benin and Togo is worse.” Ghana has reduced the contractual supply of power to Benin and Togo from 90 MW to 35 MW after the destruction of a pipeline belonging to the West Africa Gas Pipeline Project (WAGP) in August 2012.

The cut in power supply to the two countries has resulted in massive load shedding and power disruption in Togo
and Benin between eight and 12 hours or more daily.
Mr Kassa(Benin minister for energy) looked worried, apprehensive and expectant when he pleaded with the
minister to compromise and increase the power supply slightly upwards, but
Mr Buah(Ghana minister for Energy) was firm and said Ghana could only help when the situation in the
country normalised.
Mr Buah’s response created more distress for Mr Kassa and his team, who shoved diplomacy aside and displayed
open worry.

GHKWAME1: The World Health Organisation has identified
Nigeria as the country with the highest figure of
poliomyelitis cases in the world.
The World Health Organisation Country
Representative in Nigeria, Dr. David Okello,
disclosed this in Lagos on Saturday, at the
installation ceremony of the new District
Governor of Rotary International District 9110,
Dr. Kamoru Omotosho, for 2012-2013.
Okello, who noted that Nigeria was ranked
alongside two other countries, Pakistan and
Afghanistan, which are still grappling with the
problem.
According to him, “Indeed Nigeria is now the
largest contributor of global polio burden -nearly
60 per cent. Nigeria is also the only country in
the world to have all three types of polio virus —
Type 1, Type 3, and circulating vaccine-derived
Type 2 viruses."

He explained that the transmission of the
disease in Nigeria poses a real threat to the
global polio eradication effort.
Giving further statistics, he stated that of the 49
cases reported in the country currently, “two-
thirds are from four particular sanctuaries — the
northern states of Borno, Kano, Sokoto and
Zamfara.”
He, however, commended the concerted efforts
of Rotarians worldwide at eradicating the
disease as well as committing their expertise
and resources to improving the welfare of
communities.

Ghana ahead bla bla bla, Ghana housing authority funded three times better than FMBN... this is a big joke!! The Ghana govt. cannot embark on some mega projects, the type that you see in Nigeria, they would always trim it down due to the need to manage the very limited funds. The country is suffering from paucity of funds and is looking for creditors all over the world. This comment by J. Mahama, if true at all, can only be due to the pressure to convince creditors cum convince the Ghanaian people that borrowing is good business!

In fact, for several months now, Ghana has suffered from power outages, though not as bad as you see in Nigeria, but the problem is there. The electricity company of Ghana have more or less not been able to give a deadline to stop this persistent power outages nationwide. This is the same scenario that played out in Nigeria in the early 80's.. na so the wahala dey start!

The total installed electricity generating capacity of Ghana at the moment is a mere 2,800MW (capacity o, not what they are truly generating). Lagos alone will gulp this and would still need more.

I have been working for a multinational in Accra for almost 5 years, and i know facts, unlike some people...

Let us pray the black race gets its acts right asap... Nigeria, Ghana and the others. Amen.
true, most people who haven't been in ghana before will believe their talk talk president, ghana has a capacity of 2856MW planning to make it 5000MW by 2017 when nigeria already produce 4000MW. They have been struggling to produce their own gas for years, even if the gas come on stream they still need to buy Nigerian gas they don't even have money to build power plants the $3bn chinese loan didn't work out just common $3bn o, cholera already killed 3000 in ghana (not ebola o cus some of you will think i am talking about ebola) Nigerians that haven't been to ghana before will always think that place is heaven lol when the only city there is accra (just like the size of benin city) their president talks too much he should help his dead country before helping others, Lagos alone needs about 15,000MW and ghana does not produce half of that right now

BusinessNigeria Records ‘significant Improvement’ In Ease Of Doing Business by Orina(op): 11:54am On Sep 30, 2014
The just released World Bank report of ‘Doing Business in Nigeria 2014’ has noted that Nigeria has recorded significant improvements in its ‘Doing Business’ index since the last benchmarking exercise was conducted four years. The World Bank report recorded for the first time that reforms that make it easier to start a business have been undertaken in the country.
According to the Doing Business study, progress is measured in four regulatory areas, such as; Starting a Business, Dealing with Construction Permits, Registering Property and Enforcing contracts. From 2010 till date, the study said Nigeria recorded 34 improvements in its ‘Ease of Doing Business’ index, of which 13 focused on starting a business, eight on dealing with construction permits, 10 on registering property, and three on enforcing contracts.
The report also measured the progress made by the states in Nigeria, noting that 22 of the country’s 36 states have improved in at least one of the four regulatory areas. Cross River and Rivers states in the Niger-Delta, Niger State in the North-Central, and Ogun and Ekiti states in the South-West recorded the most progress, the study noted. World Bank Country Director, Nigeria, Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly said the five states stood out for introducing several high-impact reforms that narrowed the gap to best practices the most.
Marie-Nelly, who spoke during the public presentation of the report in Abuja on Monday, noted that the improvement in the Ease of Doing Business in most of the states of the federation was a positive landmark for the federal government’s Doing Business and Investment Climate Reforms Programme, which it is currently implementing in partnership with the World Bank and DFID.
She added: “Nigeria’s business climate has improve significantly since 2010 when the last benchmarking exercise was conducted. This is a positive achievement we all should be proud. This shows that change is possible in Nigeria, especially now that the country positioned itself as the largest economy in Africa and the leading destination for foreign direct investment globally.”

BusinessLagos Bridges Energy Gap With Additional 8.8MW by Orina(op): 2:21pm On Sep 26, 2014
An indication of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to its inhabitants has been clearly demonstrated in recent moves to boost power supply within the state; the latest announcement in this regard is the commissioning of the 8.8 megawatt Mainland Independent Power Plant as part of the Energy Conservation Month 2014.
“The power needs of Lagos, Nigeria’s industrial and commercial nerve center and one of the world’s fastest growing mega cities is huge. To this end, the Lagos State Government has launched several initiatives to meet the power needs of its people across domestic, industrial and commercial spheres,” noted Mrs Damilola Ogunbiyi, General Manager of the Lagos State Electricity Board, in a statement.
The Power Plant is expected to be launched and formally switched on by Governor Babatunde Fashola on Friday, 31st October, 2014. Once operationally, the plant will provide uninterrupted power supply to specific public institutions including the Ikeja High Court Complex, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja Water Works and the Old Secreteriat Complex.
According to her, the month of October has been set aside by the state government and themed a month for Energy Conservation, and this has been the case since 2013. “It is essentially a Behavioural Change Campaign dubbed as ‘Conserve Energy, Save Money’ (CESM) and is aimed at promoting the practice of efficient use of available electric power,” she said.
Other moves made by the present administration to boost power supply within the state include the implementation of a strategic energy development plan which has necessitated the creation of a Ministry of Education & Mineral Resources as well as the Lagos State Electricity Board.

With all that 70% of you guys live on a $ a day. The average nigerian lack security, health care, education, adequate food and water. So what's the point of growing economy if the average citizen keeps getting poor.
ghanaians are suffering they can't buy food cus prices are too high your budget deficit is 50% of GDP, Ghanaians don't lack good health care but more than 3000 people already died of cholera this year (small cholera o just pray ebola doesn't come there) and you say Nigeria health care is bad when we successfully contained ebola? you said 70% of Nigerians are poor (which is not true) the other 30% that lives in luxury is about 51m people (population of south africa and two times the population of ghana) and for your info only 33% of Nigerians are poor source: http://m.news24.com/nigeria/Business/News/Poverty-level-drops-by-21-percent-in-two-years-20140723
