There are still over 30 million people living as slaves worldwide. According to figures from the Walk Free Foundation, an organization against slavery released early Thursday, Nigeria has been included in the top 10 countries with millions of people in slavery.

Modern slavery was defined as human trafficking, forced labor, and practices such as debt bondage, forced marriage, and the sale or exploitation of children. There are 162 countries ranked in the index of slavery Walk Free Foundation. This shows that as many as 76 percent of the 29.8 million slaves living in 10 countries. India has 13.9 million forced workers most slaves. The other countries in the top 10 are China, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Russia, Thailand, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

One in three Nigerians experienced some sort of mental illness in 2013, according to a new report from the World Federation of Mental Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The Founder of the Mental Health Foundation, Dr Emmanuel Owoyemi, said that 64 million Nigerians out of an estimated total of 150 million had one form of mental illness or the other.

“Sixty four million Nigerians today are going through one form of mental illness or the other because everything that would cause mental illness is on the increase in Nigeria.

“Poverty is on the increase, hopelessness is on the increase, insecurity is on the increase. There is so much panic at heart, anxiety, high level depression.

“And also, there is no mental health policy in Nigeria right now; the National Assembly has been delaying in passing the Mental Health Bill.

“None of the psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria today has up to 1000 beds and we have over 160 million people.

“We have about 150 psychiatrists; we have 34 neuro-surgeons in the whole country, meaning that, one point something million Nigerians is to one psychiatrist.

“How many people can one psychiatrist attend to within the 1.2 million or 1.3 million?

“So, we are not doing enough. The human capital is not there, the facility is not there, and yet everything that could cause mental illness is on the increase in Nigeria.”

The Nigerian Universities ASUU strike entered 100 days with no end in sight. The uncompromising talk between members of ASUU and the Federal government continues.

The nationwide strike which commenced on July 1, for non-implementation of an agreement ASUU signed with the Federal Government in 2009, as well as the non-payment of their earned allowances has achieved its first 100 days. Thanks to the Federal Government's delay in approving and disbursing what was entered on paper.

It’s a common complaint among men in the dating world, and it is a phenomenon that still befuddles all of us. That is why The Star Online sought the help of Charis Wong, a marriage and family therapist, to explain why women fall for “bad men”.

“A lot of women get caught up in this cycle and they can remain in this cycle for the rest of their lives,” said Wong.

Wong says that women who fall for “bad men” often have unresolved issues that make them attracted to these individuals.

“In a normal situation, a woman would be attracted to someone who would make a potential life mate, and father to her future children,” explained Wong.

“However, there are some cases where women may have unresolved childhood issues, and have the tendency to fall for bad boys as a way to deal with these issues,” she said.

Wong says that women from dysfunctional families, whose father had affairs with other women, or women with father issues, who did not get much attention from their father, may also fall into the cycle of dating “bad men”.

A distant or emotionally detached man may be a relationship that is considered normal for the woman.

“It is an accustomed and familiar relationship, and when you’re familiar with something, it’s comfortable, and you will become unconsciously attracted to the same sort of man your mother was,” said Wong.

Wong said that low self-esteem is another reason women fall for “bad men”.

“This is when women don’t have a healthy image of themselves. They often do not think that they’re worthwhile to be with a “good guy”, so they settle for the “bad man”,” said Wong.

Wong said that many of these women put the man’s faults on themselves; blaming themselves for his bad behaviour.

“They will think that maybe he is ignoring me because I’m not good enough, so I need to be better,” explained Wong.

The Akwa Ibom State Police command has confirmed the incident and released the name of aNigerian man who kills his landlord, landlady before setting the house on fire.

The house is located at Asuquo Eyo Street in Ifa Ikot Okpon in the Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state. Daughter of the deceased, Ms Emem Akpan, narrated the incident to reporters, saying that the tenant-landlord dispute started when her father asked Ime to move out of his house.

Akpan said that the suspect refused to park out and threatened that if her father insisted on ejecting him, he would kill them and burn down the house.

"We thought what he said was just a mere threat. None of us could believe that Ime was capable of doing what he said. Two days ago, we saw him bringing worn-out tyres into the compound. We didn't know he had a plan".

"Yesterday, before we left for church in the evening, he brought 20 litres of fuel, more than what his generator could contain. I remember a neighbor asking him what he was going to do with such amount of fuel, but he told him that he was going to run the generator overnight".

"This is what we saw this morning as we returned from church, that the fuel and worn-out tyres were weapons used by the assailant to kill my parents," she said.

In one of the insane story this year coming from an African village, a woman and mother pregnant with her own son's child has asked to marry him because they are "very much in love". Betty Mbereko, a 40 year old mother is six months pregnant carrying her grandson.

The pregnant woman has been a widow for the past years and has been living with her 23 year old son Farai Mbereko in a village of Mabingo. According to the Zimbabwe Mail, Betty has asked traditional leaders to accept the marriage, because they are "very much in love".

A man found $100,000 in a bag and returned it to the owner. The generous man was rewarded him with $400. The Cordovan taxi driver found a bag with the 100 thousand dollars that had been forgotten by a passenger who took his service and kindly returned it.

The taxi driver Juan Amado, father of eight, found the bag and quickly reported it to the agency's manager. When asked, Amando said "I did it for God and for my children,"

"When I suffered a stroke eight years ago, they said I would be in a wheelchair. I asked God to let me work to feed my children and He did. Thats why I'm going to return something with all that He gave me? I didn't do it for me, or for the person who lost it, I did it for God "he said.

An infamous cult leader known as "Black Jesus", who was suspected of cannibalism, has been chopped to death in a remote Papua New Guinea village, reports said.

Steven Tari, a convicted rapist, had been on the run since escaping from a prison in Madang in the Pacific nation's east during a mass break-out with 48 others in March this year.

Sylvester Kalaut, the Madang police chief, said on Friday that Tari and one of his followers were killed at a village about 20km outside Madang on Thursday as they were attacking a young woman.

"He is now dead and this could be the fate of the others who are also on the run from authorities and I am warning and strongly urging those escapees to surrender themselves to authorities," Kalaut told the PNG Post-Courier.

Tari, a failed Lutheran pastor who was widely known as Black Jesus, was found guilty in 2010 of raping girls who belonged to his Christian-based sect and sentenced to up to 10 years.

At the time, he had thousands of village followers, including a core of armed warriors to protect him, in what is commonly referred to in PNG as a "cargo cult".

As part of his "culture ministry", he preached that young girls were to be "married" to him as it was God's prophecy.

Kalaut said the woman Tari was in the process of attacking was "a flower girl tricked into joining the cult", adding that angry villagers had surrounded him and his companion and killed them.

His death follows that of a young high-school girl about a week ago, a murder alleged to have been carried out by Tari.

When he was captured in 2007, there were widespread allegations that his cult also practised cannibalism and sacrificial blood rituals, but police only charged him with rape.

PNG is a sprawling nation where black magic, sorcery and cannibalism sometimes occur.

Last year, police arrested dozens of people linked to an alleged cannibal cult accused of killing at least seven people, eating their brains raw and making soup from their joysticks.

And as your speech sort of laid out plans to rehabilitate your state during the election campaign, you still have a situation where growth remains slow, roads and schools are worse than before, and unemployment sky high. A lot of Nigerians are worried although this is nothing abnormal to what they are used to. They believed in you as a good person and that's why they voted for you. What has changed since?

Now to the matter at hand. If you look over the last seven months, I have been struggling to deliver on the promises I made. I wanted the people of Nigeria to have an idea of what's going on behind closed doors. When we first met over the U.S, we talked about ways to effect a change in Nigeria. I told you then that it will take more than fifty years if not one hundred years before Nigeria will become a better place like America. It is hard to deliver on the promises. You see in America, the governors have their own police and the state have their own police too. We need to have something like that here. Each state have to be independent with a central focus. We need to have an agenda where every state has to perform to an optimal condition. If you are not performing according to standard, the senate should vote and impeach such person including the President.


What has been happening in the past two years is not reflective of my values and goals for my state. We see roads to the Airport, Downtown, Tourist area and stadium all brand new and in good conditions. Go a mile over East/West and you will see untarred roads. We are very deceptive. As soon as the money or budget allocation comes in, everybody comes in and takes their cut including. They stuck in their piles and the money left over is thrown at the Chinese companies to rehabilitate our roads. I believe that is one of the main reasons we are not developing as a nation. Those educated are not trained and can't even get a job. We outsource our jobs to foreigners and allow them enslave our citizens. Too bad.

A Pakistani TV prime time talk show host has been giving away babies live on air. Aamir Liaquat Hussain, one of Pakistan’s most famous television personalities, gave two abandoned baby girls to couples without children last month and plans to give away an infant boy this week.
“If we didn’t find this baby, a cat or a dog would have eaten it,” Hussain said during one broadcast. His audience applauded as he handed over one of the baby girls to her new parents.

Fanny went to work with her Samsung Galaxy S3 phone in her pocket. The workday starts but at some point she felt a warmth and a strange smell from her pocket of the trousers. Before she even had the time to react, the phone catches fire and the girl reported third-degree burns on her right thigh.

No two weddings are the same. The latest trend of innovative wedding show sees Italians Gabriel and Valentina Lenzotti Ginebri put up one of the surprise or craziest wedding so far this year. The crowd of invited guests and families from both sides gathered in church waiting for the bride and groom but the soon to be wed couples were nowhere to be found. One of the members of the families heard the ambulance siren going off. It was so loud it drew the attention of the priest and other invited guest at the church. To their surprise was the bride and groom being helped out of the ambulance. The bride in a stretcher and the groom in a wheelchair.

The bride and groom were ushered into the church in an act of escort by nurses. Of course, after a start like that, the ending could not live up to the hype.

A scientist has claimed that advances in cell engineering have paved way for a full human head transplant in the future-even today.In a paper published recently, Dr Sergio Canavero, of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group in Italy, said that these advancements mean that surgeons will now theoretically be able to fuse a human spinal cord just like it happened in Mary Shelley`s classic story `Frankenstein,`
"This is no longer science fiction. This could be done today — now," he said, according to The Telegraph. "If this operation is done it will provide a few people with a substantial amount of extra life. The only reason I have not gone further is funding."

"In 1970, Robert White and his colleagues successfully transplanted the head of a rhesus monkey on the body of another one, whose head had simultaneously been removed. The monkey lived 8 days and was, by all measures, normal, having suffered no complications," Canavero writes. "However, the technology did not exist for reconnecting the spinal cord, and this line of research was no longer pursued."But, he adds, "It is my contention that the technology only now exists for such linkage."

However, Canavero believes that he will be able to do this thanks to chemicals called `membrane fusogens` or sealants, some of which are already used for making medicines.

He claimed in the paper that the greatest technical obstacle to endeavor like these is reconnecting donor`s and recipient`s spinal cords, adding that he believes that the technology now exists for such sort of linkages.
